2013 TSHQ CFB Preseason Top 25: #16 Northwestern Wildcats

As another off season of College Football material kicks off, this year marks the third year I’ll throw my hat in the ring and look at a number of topics and categories. In the process I’ll look to do everything from predicting next year’s 25 best teams, identify the games of the year, narrow down the Heisman field, identify those replacing 2012′s stars and ultimately make predictions for each league, culminating in a national championship pick. They’ll be many things I’ll be ridiculed for. There will be a number of things that will surprise some people. Ultimately you’ll come away from the next 6 months of material as ready for the college football season as I can possibly make you. While I’ll be sure to miss on things I would like to remind the skeptics I did correctly predict the same number of bowl teams preseason as Phil Steele a year ago as well as top him in BCS Bowl participants predicted before the year. Nonetheless I’m not putting out any magazines soon so keep buying his for the t

Nebraska 29, Northwestern 28

Taylor Martinez threw for 342 yards and three touchdowns and Nebraska rallied to beat Northwestern 29-28 on Saturday.

The Cornhuskers (5-2, 2-1 Big Ten) rallied from 12 down in the fourth, taking a one-point lead when Martinez hit Ben Cotton with a 7-yard pass with just over 2 minutes left, and hung on when a 53-yard field goal attempt by Northwestern's Jeff Budzien barely missed wide right with 1:10 remaining. That kept Nebraska in the thick of the Legends division race after being blown out at Ohio State two weeks earlier.

The Cornhuskers can thank Martinez for that. He led them to two touchdowns in the fourth quarter and completed 27 of 39 passes in the game, helping Nebraska rack up 543 yards of total offense.

Quincy Enunwa added 110 yards receiving, while Kenny Bell caught six passes for 77 yards and a touchdown. Ameer Abdullah ran for 101 yards on a day when Rex Burkhead left with an unspecified injury after a short run early on.

Venric Mark led Northwestern (6-2, 2-2) with 118 yards rushing, in

Northwestern: Chicago’s 5-0 B1G team

Entering this college football Saturday 4-0, Northwestern was just outside the national rankings. If that seemed perplexing, consider the unimpressive record of NU’s four vanquished opponents.
After today however, with a 44-29 victory over the Indiana Hoosiers bringing NU to 5-0, the Wildcats should be well within the national rankings, and deservedly so. Not that IU is anything special, but 5-0 is still 5-0.

Northwestern scored the first 20 points of the game before IU got on the board, and when the Indiana offense woke up in the second half (thanks to the insertion of Nate Sudfeld at quarterback) things got a lot more interesting. Indiana even made it a one possession game in the 4th quarter.
But NU had such a balanced attack on offense: accruing 310 yards passing and 394 yards rushing (704 overall on 93 plays) that the Hoosier defense was over matched all day.
Quarterback 1a/wide receiver Kain Colter scored 4 touchdowns and had nearly 100 yards rushing, and over 100 yards recei...

Northwestern 38, South Dakota 7

Venric Mark ran for 117 yards and three touchdowns to lead Northwestern to an easy 38-7 victory over South Dakota on Saturday afternoon.

This one figured to be a breather for the Wildcats (4-0), and that's exactly what it was. They barely broke a sweat against a FCS opponent after tight victories over Syracuse, Vanderbilt and Boston College, building a 28-0 halftime lead with Mark going off for 97 yards and doing all his scoring.

The only real scare for Northwestern came when Kain Colter took a hard hit from South Dakota's Chris Frierson at the end of a 10-yard run rather than slide. He spent most of the first quarter on the sideline with a wrist injury but finished with 46 yards passing and 38 rushing.

Running back Mike Trumpy, meanwhile, sat out the first half and ran for just 10 yards, after going for 106 and a touchdown the previous week from Boston College. But with Mark leading the way, Northwestern had its way in this one.

Trevor Siemian added 72 yards passing. Quentin Williams came up big

Northwestern had great production from its two-quarterback system, but the offense's primary success stemmed from the ground attack; namely junior tailback Mike Trumpy.
Northwestern 22, Boston College 13

Mike Trumpy ran for 106 yards with a late touchdown, and Northwestern beat Boston College 22-13 on Saturday.

Jeff Budzien tied a school record with five field goals and the Wildcats (3-0) made it three wins over three BCS teams to start the season even though they didn't reach the end zone until the closing minutes.

They downed a punt at the 1 to pin Boston College (1-2) against the goal line and took over on the Eagles' 44 with 2:35 left in the game after they went three-and-out.

After going three quarters against Vanderbilt the previous week without a TD, Northwestern finally broke through in this one when Trumpy broke up the middle for a 27-yard scoring run that made it 22-13 with 1:37 remaining.

Before that, Budzien's leg provided all the scoring. Northwestern wasted several big chances, particularly in the early going, and had to settle for field goals instead of touchdowns. But with their kicker on target, the Wildcats led most of the way to come out with the win hours after the school a

By the Numbers: Analyzing Northwestern’s Win Over Syracuse

Each Sunday, we’ll analyze Northwestern’s game “by the numbers,” picking out the five most important statistics from the game. Here’s the week one installment.
by Kevin Trahan (@k_trahan) Inside Northwestern.com

4: Combined rushing yards for Treyvon Green and Mike Trumpy
This spring, Northwestern figured it had finally found a solid running game outside of its quarterback, thanks to Treyvon Green and Mike Trumpy. Trumpy was returning from an ACL tear the following season and Green looked much improved after an up-and-down freshman year. However, it was Venric Mark who took over starting duties in fall camp, and Mark had 82 yards in his debut.
Mark is a versatile player who gives NU excellent speed on the edge, but he can’t move the pile and will struggle to run up the middle with this year’s offensive line. Fitzgerald clearly wants to find a power running game, but that can’t happen unless Green or Trumpy steps up. Green had 8 yards, while Trumpy had minus-four. That’s amazing c...

Northwestern’s leading passer, rusher and receiver are all the same person: 2012 quarterback Kain Colter. A more accomplished runner than passer, Colter is dangerous with the ball in his hands and replaced departed Dan Persa four times last season. Colter will operate behind an offensive line that returns experience and standout tackle Pat Ward. The fact that Colter and the line are trusted opens up an interesting dimension for Northwestern. Tailback Mike Trumpy isn’t special, but he’ll run hard and find holes because of Colter’s misdirection and threat. Additionally Northwestern will replace Jeremy Ebert with a rare 5-star talent in former USC receiver Kyle Prater. While things didn’t work out at USC for Prater, he was the former no.

2012 Big 10 Previews: Northwestern, Over/Under Props

Its time to dust off the JCB Prop Creating Machine, come up with some fancy numbers and use them to preview the upcoming Big 10 season. We’ve done these in the past, but here’s a reminder on the routine. We take a look at each team through the prism of faux prop bets that also pinpoint main keys to that team’s season. To stress again, these are not real prop bets, unless noted otherwise. We are making these up on our own, but we feel pretty confident that the final tally of overs and unders with these will tell major portions of each team’s tale this season. We’ll be looking at one Big 10 team each week, with these posts for the most part hitting the blog on Monday or Tuesday.
We’re starting with the Northwestern Wildcats. Northwestern has now appeared in a school record four bowl games in a row. Can they make it five in a row? Here are the props and stats to track.

Northwestern Wildcats: 2011 Exit Survey

Northwestern came into this year riding a three season bowl streak but had seen their record decline for the past two seasons. On paper, this looked like a chance for the Wildcats to break through in the Big Ten. In the first year of divisional play, Northwestern got a favorable schedule that did not include traditional Big Ten powers Ohio State or Wisconsin. Northwestern would also get three of their toughest games (Michigan, Michigan State and Penn State) at home. Unfortunately for Northwestern, they lost every one of those home games and also lost to Iowa, Illinois and Army as they dropped five straight games after starting 2-0. Northwestern also lost their bowl game so they finished 6-7 on the year which would mean that Northwestern's record had now declined for three straight seasons. We caught up with the Northwestern blog Lake The Posts to get their take on the 2011 season and get a quick look into 2012.
