2013 TSHQ CFB Preseason Top 25: #8 South Carolina Gamecocks

As another off season of College Football material kicks off, this year marks the third year I’ll throw my hat in the ring and look at a number of topics and categories. In the process I’ll look to do everything from predicting next year’s 25 best teams, identify the games of the year, narrow down the Heisman field, identify those replacing 2012′s stars and ultimately make predictions for each league, culminating in a national championship pick. They’ll be many things I’ll be ridiculed for. There will be a number of things that will surprise some people. Ultimately you’ll come away from the next 6 months of material as ready for the college football season as I can possibly make you. While I’ll be sure to miss on things I would like to remind the skeptics I did correctly predict the same number of bowl teams preseason as Phil Steele a year ago as well as top him in BCS Bowl participants predicted before the year. Nonetheless I’m not putting out any magazines soon so keep buying his ...

Gamecocks Football: 10 Observations From Spring Ball

The South Carolina Gamecocks football squad has gone through 10 practices so far this Spring Football session and here are some 10 quick observations:

	1. What would spring football be without Coach Spurrier poor-mouthing the play of the offensive line? It is a fact that success in the SEC begins with this unit but we have full confidence they will begin to mesh before fall ball.

	2. We talked a lot last year about Clowney and Taylor, well expect to hear a lot about Chaz Sutton and Clowney. These two could be the best defensive line combo in all of college football. Expect to hear their names called a lot in 2013.

	3. Oh, Clowney is still a man amongst boys. UNC, beware.

	4. Running back Mike Davis has erased all doubts about the running game in 2013. The entire unit is deep and should be poised for good things come fall.

	5. There is a quarterback battle between Shaw and Thompson. Will be interesting to see who wins out. Early money on Thompson.

	6. Speaking of QB...

South Carolina: first look

Prior to the Big Ten Championship game on Saturday night, all signs pointed towards Michigan facing probable Heisman trophy winner Johnny Manziel and Texas A&M in the Capital One Bowl. But the stunning 70-31 beatdown that Nebraska took at the hands of Wisconsin changed that. Instead, it’s the Cornhuskers who are heading to Orlando and Michigan gets a more favorable matchup against South Carolina in the Outback Bowl.

Steve Spurrier’s squad went 10-2 overall and 6-2 in the SEC, finishing third in the SEC East behind Georgia and Florida. The only two losses were in back to back weeks to Florida and LSU, coming on the heels of a 35-7 win over Georgia – the Bulldogs’ only loss prior to the SEC Championship game. The loss to LSU was close (23-21) when the Gamecocks had climbed to No. 3 in the national rankings. The following week, however, SC was throttled by Florida 44-11.
Gamecocks DE Clowney out against Wofford

South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney will not play against Wofford because of a sprained foot that's bothered him most of the season.

Clowney was not dressed in his uniform before pregame practice. He has not practiced this week, but defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward has said Clowney hasn't practiced much the past few weeks yet still played.

The 12th-ranked Gamecocks are facing a Football Championship Subdivision opponent and have rival Clemson coming up next week.

Clowney is a 6-foot-6, 256-pound sophomore who's third in the Southeastern Conference with 8 1/2 sacks. Chaz Sutton is starting in Clowney's place.

No. 6 Gamecocks aim to stay hot vs. Kentucky

A sixth-ranked South Carolina team that's rolling would seem to have all kinds of advantages Saturday night against reeling Kentucky.

The Gamecocks (4-0, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) have outscored their last three opponents 128-26 and have won seven of eight dating back to last season. They appear poised to again the Wildcats, especially after routing Kentucky 54-3 last fall at home.

None of that fazes Kentucky (1-3, 0-1).

The Wildcats believe the return of sophomore quarterback Maxwell Smith from a separated shoulder provides the offense they need to end a two-game losing streak and avenge that blowout.

Kentucky has done it before. The Wildcats upset the Gamecocks 31-28 in Lexington two years ago. But South Carolina hasn't forgotten that either and is not looking past Kentucky.

''We emphasize with the young guys that it is an SEC road game,'' Gamecocks senior fullback Qua Gilchrist said. ''It's not about Kentucky, it's the SEC on the road. So every opponent is go

No. 6 Gamecocks on big-time rush

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- It's rabbit season at No. 6 South Carolina.

The Gamecocks (4-0, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) this season have used their "rabbit defense" of all defensive ends across the line to cause havoc for opponents. It's not every play, but with ultra-quick ends like Jadeveon Clowney and Devin Taylor, it doesn't have to be.

South Carolina defensive line coach Brad Lawing calls it the rabbit package because he feels defensive ends are faster and more athletic than defensive tackles.

But these rabbits aren't fuzzy or cuddly. They're aggressive.

South Carolina is second in the SEC with 15 sacks. Clowney leads the team with 4 1-2 sacks. The Gamecocks head to Kentucky (1-3, 0-1) seeking their school-record tying ninth straight victory.

"Those tackles hate it when I decide those athletes are going in," Lawing said.

Still, no one can argue with the results.

The Gamecocks, who ranked fifth in the SEC at stopping third down conversions with 35 percent, have l

Pinkel takes blame for Missouri's latest SEC loss

Missouri coach Gary Pinkel knew there wasn't anywhere else to place the blame for this Southeastern Conference loss.

''Our focus wasn't good enough and that's coaching so that was my fault,'' said a distressed Pinkel after the Tigers' 31-10 loss to No. 7 South Carolina on Saturday.

Missouri had hung tough two weeks back in its first SEC game with No. 5 Georgia. The Tigers even led 20-16 late in the third quarter before the Bulldogs pounced on three turnovers to take control in a 41-20 victory. But that game took place in Missouri and Pinkel's club found the going - and the Gamecocks' defense - much tougher in the first SEC road game.

Little went right for the Tigers (2-2, 0-2 SEC) on either side of the ball.

The fast-paced offense managed only seven first downs through three quarters and ended with a season-low 255 yards. The defense allowed South Carolina's Connor Shaw to complete his final 20 passes and finish 20-of-21. Shaw threw for two touchdowns and Marcus

Shaw on target in No. 7 South Carolina's win

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Connor Shaw completed 20 straight passes and threw for two touchdowns, Marcus Lattimore ran for two scores and No. 7 South Carolina manhandled Missouri 31-10 in the Tigers first Southeastern Conference road game Saturday.

Shaw missed his first pass to Lattimore on the game's first series, then hit his final 20 and finished with 252 yards passing as the Gamecocks (2-0 SEC) improved to 4-0 for just the ninth time in 119 seasons of football.

Missouri (2-2, 0-2) struggled against a Gamecocks defense that has given up three touchdowns all year. The Tigers had a season-low 254 yards.

Lattimore rushed for 85 yards. His touchdowns gave him South Carolina's career mark with 33 rushing scores, a record Lattimore shared with Heisman Trophy winner George Rogers and Harold Green.

Shaw came into the game having played just two quarters the past two contests because of a shoulder injury sustained in the season-opening win over Vanderbilt. But Spurrier raised plenty of eyebrows early this w
