Toronto Blue Jays Purchase Contract of Pitcher Justin Germano

The Toronto Blue Jays purchased the contract of right handed pitcher Justin Germano from Triple-A Las Vegas Saturday. He has been horrible in the minor leagues this year and has a career 5.27 ERA in the majors in over 322 innings pitched. Considering that he is now 30-years-old, he is most likely just a mop-up man to take the pressure off of their overworked bullpen arms.

Reds are a team in need of an offensive surge

As the Cincinnati Reds inch closer to wrapping up the NL Central, they realize their offense must get going before the playoffs begin.
A matchup with the Chicago Cubs' Justin Germano could help their bats warm up.
In Tuesday night's opener at Wrigley Field, the Reds look to beat the Cubs for the seventh time in eight games and send Germano to a sixth straight loss.
With an 11-game lead over second-place St. Louis and a magic number down to five, Cincinnati (88-59) could clinch the division before leaving Chicago on Thursday.
"Nobody wants anybody to clinch on your turf, that's for sure," manager Dale Sveum said. "It's inevitable that they'll clinch, you just don't want them to do it on your place."
Despite being a virtual lock to make the playoffs, the Reds haven't looked too impressive lately. They've split their last 12 games, plating two runs or fewer six times.
Against Miami on Sunday, they matched a season best with 17 hits, but went 4 for 21 with runne

Lucroy looks to lead Brewers bats at Wrigley

Chicago Cubs starter Justin Germano believes he pitched better than the box score would indicate after he gave up seven runs to the Milwaukee Brewers in his last outing.

He will get another chance to prove he can fare well against the Brewers when these NL Central rivals open a four-game set Monday night at Wrigley Field.

Milwaukee (59-67) swept three games at home from Chicago (49-77) last week to improve to 10-3 in the season series including five straight wins.

The Brewers opened last week's set Aug. 20 with a 9-5 victory. Germano (2-3, 5.40 ERA) lasted 4-23 innings for the Cubs and was charged with seven runs -- six in an eight-run fifth by Milwaukee that chased the right-hander.

The journeyman had not given up that many runs since allowing a career-high 10 at Houston on April 21, 2008, but thought his performance against the Brewers wasn't that bad.

"People might think I'm crazy, but I feel like I pitched a lot better than the line shows," Germano said. "I got ground balls

Theo and the Sox continue to do business with each other

The Red Sox have traded AAA pitcher Justin Germano to the Cubs for large bags of cash appropriately marked with big dollar signs. Well, maybe not large bags, but it is probably more than I will make over the next 30 years.

On Thursday, Red Sox president/CEO Larry Lucchino made a radio appearance on the Dennis & Callahan show and said general manager Ben Cherington is "empowered" to make trades before the July 31 non-waiver Trade Deadline.
"I think he has the capacity to do it. When he took the job and in fact since then, we have talked frequently about boldness," Lucchino said. "You've got to know when to be bold and when to be somewhat conservative and methodical. This is a club that has been built on bold moves over the years, going back to the Nomar Garciaparra trade, as one example. There should be no doubt in anyone's mind that Ben Cherington and the entire baseball operations are all pointed to working hard to July 31."

OMG! OMG! OMG! This is the most exciting thing ever!!!

Cubs acquire relieve Justin Germano from Boston for cash; Jairo Asencio designated for assignment. Coleman scratched from Iowa start.
— Paul Sullivan (@PWSullivan) July 19, 2012

OK, maybe it's not so exciting.
But Coleman is probably heading to St. Louis, which probably means something is actually going to happen with Dempster soon. Probably.
Or not. We're taking a wait and see approach.

UPDATE
The Cubs are now saying that Coleman is only being sent to St. Louis in case Germano can't get there in time for the game. This smells like ******** to me since A) they wouldn't have to DFA Asencsio until they are ready to activiate Germano and 2) When did a journey from Boston to St. Louis become such an ordeal that he might not make it by tomorrow's game? Maybe Germano is Amish and he can only travel by horse and buggy? There just doesn't seem to be any real reason to have Coleman standing by as a contingen...

Justin Germano Designated for Assignment by Red Sox, Could Be Possible Trade Chip

The arrival of Jacoby Ellsbury signaled the end for Justin Germano. Before Friday's game against the Rays, the Red Sox announced that Germano had been designated for assignment. The move was made to clear up a roster spot on Boston's 40-man roster. In his lone game for the Red Sox, Germano dazzled out of the bullpen, tossing 5 2/3 scoreless innings against the Yankees. With seven strikeouts in the outing, he became the first Red Sox reliever to fan at least seven batters since Casey Fossum achieved the feat on July 24, 2002. But Germano's recent exploits should garner trade...

BOSTON -- The doubleheader forced manager Bobby Valentine to gather depth. With a four-game series against the Yankees crammed into three days -- and the reputation for length between the rivals -- the Red Sox skipper needed an extra arm to bolster the bullpen. In Game One of the doubleheader, Justin Germano alleviated concerns. Stepping in for Franklin Morales in the fourth inning, Germano made his Red Sox debut and tossed 5 2/3 scoreless innings. "Yeah I was just trying to eat as many innings as I can," Germano said. "I'm glad I was able to finish it and save...

Justin Germano Fueled By Rough Bumps Over the Years, Shares Japanese Ideologies With Bobby Valentine

The journey has taken Justin Germano to different places. From Japan to Columbus to Cleveland to South Korea to Pawtucket, the right-handed pitcher has traveled the world, hoping to revive his major league career to where it was in 2007 as a member of the Padres. Now, Germano has earned a shot in Boston. Since Germano had a July 1 opt-out clause in his minor league contract, the Red Sox could have risked losing him if they hadn't elevated him to the majors. It's a notable stride for Germano, who was toiling away in Japan three years ago –– for...

The Red Sox have agreed to minor league contracts with right-handers Aaron Cook and Justin Germano, potential candidates for the fifth spot in their rotation.

Boston announced the moves via Twitter and said both would receive invitation to the major league spring training camp.

Cook was 3-10 with a 6.03 ERA in 17 starts and one relief appearance last season with Colorado. He has spent all 10 of his major-league seasons with the Rockies, going 72-68 with a 4.53 ERA.

Germano is 8-20 with a 5.02 ERA in six major league seasons with San Diego, Cincinnati and Cleveland. In 2011, he was 0-1 with a 5.68 ERA with the Indians before being sold to South Korea's Samsung Lions on Aug. 5.

Red Sox Add More Depth With Justin Germano

New Boston Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington continues to add low cost pitching depth just a day after adding Aaron Cook to mix.
Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com is reporting that the Red Sox have signed right hander Justin Germano to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training.. Heyman stated that Germano turned down more money in Korea where he finished the 2011 season.
Germano actually started the 2011 season with the Cleveland Indians where he was 0-1 with a 5.68 in nine appearances. He was with Triple-A Columbus but then he headed to Korea to play for the Samsung Lions when the Indians sold his contract to them.
Germano threw a perfect game for the Columbus Clippers while he was there on July 26, 2011 against the Syracuse Chiefs.
In parts of six seasons in the big leagues with the San Diego Padres, Cincinnati Reds and Indians, Germano is 8-20 with a 5.02 ERA in 79 appearances (36 starts). He spent the 2009 season in Japan with the Fukuoka Hawks where he wa...
