Julian Tavarez gets designated for assignment

I never thought I'd see this day come. Julian Tavarez has never been a great pitcher in Boston but he ate innings and was a good guy to keep around the clubhouse. Now I'm not saying I wanted him on the team but it looked like Theo Epstein sure did.

Tavarez has been designated for assignment today to make room on the active roster for Sean Casey. Most people, myself included, thought Craig Hansen would be sent back down to Pawtucket; however, after the trade talks to send Tavarez to Colorado died this weekend, they changed their philosophy and just cut him instead.

Justin Masterson called up to start this afternoon for the Red Sox

Pitcher Justin Masterson was called up from the Portland Sea Dogs today to make a spot-start against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Craig Hansen was sent back down to make room for him.
With Beckett and Daisuke both missing starts due to the flu and post-flu symptoms (Josh's stiff neck), the Red Sox were forced to bring up Masterson A LOT earlier than they had hoped we would see him.
The team didn't want to have Wakefield pitch a day earlier than he was scheduled for two reasons. The first being that Wake is getting up there in years so forcing him to get out of his rhythm and pitch a day earlier than he is supposed to, can't possibly be a good thing. The second is that Wakefield usually dominates the Devil Rays and he's the penciled in starter against them tomorrow. Why mess with a good thing?!
Masterson has a nasty 0.95 ERA in 4 starts (19 innings) for Double-A Portland thus far. I'm personally shocked that he is getting called up this early but I'd be even more shocked if he stayed around after tonight's game.

The Clemens Quandary; Rangers Pursuing Nomar?

Did Roger Clemens lie about his lack of involvement in baseball's performance-enhancing drugs scandal? And are the Texas Rangers pursuing another right-handed bat, such as Mike Piazza or Nomar Garciaparra?

2008 Boston Red Sox

Freaking out Red Sox Nation? I am starting to get their. So to have a change of pace, lets look at what the team will look like next year. Who is under contract? For how much? Who is leaving? and Who might replace them? In times like these i like to get my mind off the current team and think to the future. To be honest, the future look very bright for the Red Sox.

Will Helton Be Traded to the Red Sox?

According to the Denver Post, the Red Sox and Rockies are talking about a swap including Todd Helton. An exact trade isn't mentioned, but among the players that may be involved are Mike Lowell, Manny Delcarmen and Craig Hansen. If Lowell is moved, Kevin Youkilis would shift to third. Helton would likely hit second.

Breaking down the Red Sox Bullpen (Adding Joel Piniero, yippee)

If you are a Sox fan, already were in love with Mike TImlin, and couldnt wait to get your hands on JC Romero and Joel Piniero, then you can consider yourself a happy man (and probably a lonely one also). If not, you are probably still scratching your head and wondering how many games will slide away in late innings without Papelbon closing out games. This is a great article breaking down the current situation of the Red Sox bullpen.

Meet the Red Sox 2007 Closer

Devern Hansack? Huh? Peter Gammons stated on the Dan Patrick Radio Show that if the Red Sox were to enter spring training today, that Devern Hansack a 28 year old Nicaraguan would be the teams closer. You remember Devern, he started two games in september when the Red Sox were long out of it, and no hit the Orioles through 5 in the last game of the season, no you weren't watching the Red Sox on October 1st?

With that being said let's do a bit more focus on the Closer Situation in Boston.

Papelbon Likely Done For Season

Barring a miracle playoff run by the Boston Red Sox, rookie closer Jonathan Papelbon won't pitch again until the 2007 season. Neither Papelbon nor the Boston organization wants the pitcher to rush back into action and with Boston losing ground on the AL East lead and the Wild Card by the day, it appears the stud rookie will be shut down for the year. This injury will also lead to discussions on whether Papelbon will join the starting rotation next year. Last year the Red Sox drafted Craig Hansen out of St. John's to be their closer of the future and he is seeing major league action this year as a setup man. Those of you looking for saves for the stretch run of your fantasy baseball leagues can safely look to Mike Timlin for the remaining three weeks of the season.

Red Sox Want Andruw Jones

The buzz around Boston is about Andruw Jones. The Red Sox are feeling aggresive in responding to the Abreu deal, and are actively seeking their perfect match: Andruw Jones. They apparently offered Coco Crisp and Craig Hanson for Jones, but Atlanta wanted Jon Lester as well. Jones would fit the Red Sox defense-first approach to the game, and would allow the Sox to finally replace Johnny Damon with one of the best centerfielders in the game.
