Tuel Keeps Cougars' Hopes Alive At Stanford

IT WAS FAR from a perfect effort. But on Saturday, Jeff Tuel was the mechanic that kept the Cougars humming along – and close to a win against No. 19 Stanford. Granted, if there were a school record for being sacked the most times in one game, Tuel would be right up there after Saturday's 24-17 loss. But he also kept the Cougars’ hopes alive for the first time in weeks.

Tuel cements role as WSU's starting QB

Quarterback Jeff Tuel is listed alone as the starter as Washington State prepares for its home opener against Eastern Washington on Saturday.

Last week, Tuel and sophomore Connor Halliday were both listed as possible starters on the depth chart.

Tuel completed 30 of 45 passes against BYU for 229 yards and was intercepted twice as Washington State failed to score a touchdown in a 30-6 loss last Thursday. Tuel also looked a bit slow in releasing the ball and didn't scramble much when his receivers were covered.

Tuel says the Cougars need to execute faster, and he plans to scramble more.

BYU vs. Washington State: Five Game Observations

Just as Blue Cougar Football will preview each game this season with five things to watch for, we will review each game with our five game observations. In these observations, we will review the questions we posed in our five things to watch for article and evaluate our predictions. Question No. 1: Will Jeff Tuel control the game for WAZZU, or will his once promising career continue to decline?During Tuel’s first drive, it looked as if he was back to form, and maybe even better than two years ago before his injuries. He went 8-9 on the first drive, completing passes to seven different receivers. Brigham Young had no answer for Tuel and the way he was orchestrating the offense. Then on 3rd and 11, Tuel scrambled to his right while being chased out of pocket and threw on the run. His pass was tipped by Daniel Sorensen and intercepted by Uona Kaveinga. Later in the game, as Tuel tried to lead a comeback, he made another big mistake while trying to hit star wide receiver Marquess Wils...

3 old Cougs reflect on their QB controversies

THE TERM “quarterback controversy” is as much a part of football Xs and Os. There haven't been a lot of them at Washington State over the decades, and the way Jeff Tuel played in spring ball there wouldn't appear to be one brewing, but the ones that did flare up over the years can still generate fiery debates among the crimson faithful. But what about the guys actually involved on the field?

SPRING BALL DAY 2: Tuel shines

PULLMAN -- Washington State quarterback Jeff Tuel is learning a new offense in addition to coming off an injury-riddled season. And he threw a few picks on Day One. But neither that, nor anything else, seems to phase Tuel, and he made a whole heckuva lot completions on Saturday during the Cougs' second practice of the spring session.

Second half dooms WSU vs. No. 7 Stanford

Washington State quarterback Jeff Tuel had barely played a down this season after fracturing his collarbone on his first series against Idaho State.

But Tuel started against No. 7 Stanford on Saturday, and Washington State had it worst offensive outing of the season in a 44-14 loss to the Cardinal (6-0, 4-0 Pac-12).

''The only way you get better is by playing at this point,'' Cougars coach Paul Wulff said. ''We knew there were going to be some issues.''

That was an accurate assessment, though Wulff said the decision to start Tuel was right even though backup Marshall Lobbestael has played well this season.

Tuel completed 17 of 30 passes, but for just 145 yards with no touchdowns. Stanford's defense held Washington State (3-3, 1-2) to just 257 total yards.

Wulff said his receivers dropped too many passes and his defense had to spend too much time on the field. That gave Heisman Trophy candidate Andrew Luck too much time to shake off a rusty first half and blow the game

After two Coug Its, it’s Tuel Time

If it wasn’t clear before, it certainly became so Saturday: Jeff Tuel is the quarterback of the Washington State Cougars and needs to get back in there ASAP.
When he broke his collarbone in the first game, it seemed to be a death knell for the Cougars. And while it hasn’t been exactly that, the Cougars have now lost two games they should not have – and probably would not have if Tuel had been playing QB instead of Marshall Lobbestael.
For the second time in three winnable road games, Lobbestael failed to finish the deal.
Lobbestael’s interception on the potential winning drive was his only glaring error at UCLA, but it was a huge one and a dumb one. And it capped a day on which Lobbestael failed to finish. Too many field goals and no big plays in the 28-25 loss to UCLA.
This was an even match of two below-average Pac-12 teams, and the Cougars dominated everywhere but on the scoreboard. It’s a game Tuel would have won.
Just like Tuel probably would not have turned the ball over three times in the fou
