Light day on the schedule for prospects as three veteran pitchers take the mound, but down for West Virginia, 21-year-old lefty Joely Rodriguez has been pitching well of late. He has an ERA of 1.00 in May, with a 2/16 BB/K ratio in 18 innings. Despite the one-sided loss yesterday, Indianapolis still has the best record in the International League. For a look at the possible starters over the next few weeks, please check out our Probable Pitchers Chart.
The East Carolina Pirates Kept The Allergies Coming In Their Spring Game

In the spirit of 7-year old brain cancer patient Jack Hoffman’s inspirational run for a touchdown at the end of Nebraska’s spring game and got his own football card comes Noah Roberts, an 8-year old East Carolina University fan with cancer who cannot stop splitting defenders in spring football. Before you think ECU is copying Nebraska’s kind-hearted gesture (which you shouldn’t be, because seriously), Noah’s no newcomer to the inspirational football game. He’s been a part of the team for a couple years now. His battle inspires players and coaches. Today, they got a chance to lift him up.“He came out about two years ago and wasn’t doing too well and it was good to see him out here now still and you know it was a cool experience for him and us,” said Junior Linebacker Jeremy Grove. Head coach Ruffin McNeill said when he thinks of Noah he forgets “any hurt, or complaint, or pain that I may have. You can see how the kids reacted to Noah so that tells you what Noah means to us.” (via WTCI ...

East Carolina honors ailing child

If imitation is the greatest form of flattery, what Nebraska did to honor an ailing young boy at its spring game sparked a similar tribute from East Carolina University on Saturday.

The Cornhuskers honored Jack Hoffman by letting him run for a touchdown a week ago.

The good vibe provided a spark for the Pirates, who replicated the act as a kind gesture for 8-year-old Noah Roberts, who is battling cancer.

"He came out about two years ago and wasn't doing too well and it was good to see him out here now still and you know it was a cool experience for him and us," junior linebacker Jeremy Grove told WCTI.com .

Roberts will return to the hospital Monday, and the team is hoping the act provided a boost.

"You kinda get chills in moments like that," quarterback Shane Carden said. "It's just it's really nice to just be able to be a part of that with Noah and be able to do that for him with the whole team around him. It was a special moment."

Eight-year-old scores touchdown in the East Carolina spring football game

Jack Hoffman has some great company as Noah Roberts becomes the second person under 10 to score a TD in a spring football game this year. The 8 year old did it on the final play of the East Carolina Pirates Purple-Gold game.
Noah is amazing. Diagnosed with neurofibromatosis in 2010, he’s had two tumors removed from his brain and one from his spinal cord. So taking a handoff and running 40 yards with 300 pound men chasing him was nothing.
The kid has some speed!

Cancer-stricken announcer calls magical finish

It's the humanity that makes us watch.

Scores are important, stats are interesting and highlights are fun, especially the high-flying dunks and free-for-all rebounding that made Monday night's finale between Louisville and Michigan so special.

But in the end, it's the people and their stories that draw us in and keep us riveted to games that have no bearing on history, no effect on world events, and no greater meaning other than what we bestow upon them.

The final game of the NCAA tournament captivated millions, not because of the X's and O's or the three-point shooting, but because of Rick Pitinos quest to win championships at two different schools and surpass John Woodens win record; and because of how the Louisville players rallied after Kevin Ware went down with now-infamous compound tibia fracture.

That was why people watched. The great basketball was just a bonus.

But there was another great college championship game in recent days, and another story that made it just as compel

Akeem Richmond hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift East Carolina over Weber State 77-74 Tuesday night and claim the CollegeInsider.com tournament championship, capping the best season in school history.

The Pirates trailed 71-65 with 2:50 remaining but closed on a 12-3 run.

Weber State (30-7) had a chance to pad its late lead but had trouble at the line, making 9-of-19 free throws overall.

Miguel Paul led East Carolina with 23 points and Maurice Kemp added 20 for the Pirates (23-12), who tied a school record for wins in a season set by the 1953-54 squad.

Scott Bamfort led Weber State with 19 points, and Frank Otis and Davion Berry had 16 apiece.

The loss was Weber State's first at home since Dec. 15, a 10-point setback to Brigham Young. The Wildcats entered Tuesday's game on a 14-game home winning streak.

East Carolina’s Shamarr Bowden Ejected for Punching Opponent in the Face

A nasty altercation took place Saturday night when East Carolina’s Shamarr Bowden punched Konner Tucker of UTEP in the face during the second half of their game.
In the video, you can see Bowden take down Tucker under the basket while his teammates try to score. For no apparent reason, Bowden starts to swing on an unsuspecting Tucker. The close up angle shows a much better view of the two punches that connect with Tucker’s face. Bowden was then ejected from the game.

Bowden, a senior guard, has a history of violence and this type of behavior. He was arrested last April for ”criminal possession of a loaded weapon and prohibited use of a firearm” after he allegedly fired several shots in the air at a party.
After the game, Bowden took to Twitter to apologize for his actions direct to Tucker.

Corvonn Gaines drained a 3-pointer with 3 seconds remaining in overtime as East Carolina topped Conference USA-foe Central Florida 88-85 Saturday night.

East Carolina (10-5, 1-1) trailed by as many as 17 points in the second half but crawled back and forced a 74-74 tie. Maurice Kemp hit two free throws to put the Pirates up 76-74, but Keith Clanton hit a jumper with 17 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.

East Carolina's Robert Sampson scored first in overtime with a dunk, then the teams exchanged the lead four times.

Clanton's layup tied it 85-85 with 14 seconds left, but then Gaines drained his game-winning 3-pointer. It was Gaines' only shot attempt.

Kemp, Ty Armstrong, Shamarr Bowden and Miguel Paul tied for the Pirates' team lead with 16 points each.

Keith Clanton paced UCF (11-5, 1-1) with 36 points, and Tristan Spurlock had 23 with 11 rebounds.

ULL player drops the ball before crossing the goal line but gets touchdown anyway

With the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns up 21 to 7 over the East Carolina Pirates in the New Orleans Bowl, a ULL running back took the ball all the way to the house. He did make one mistake. He didn’t protect the football after before crossing the goal line and had an ECU defender strip him of the ball in the end zone. Of course, there wasn’t enough evidence to overturn the ball so ULL got the score but if it was called the other way, there is no way they would have reversed it.

Jay (0-1 overall, 0-1 ATS): I'm a big fan of the job Mark Hudspeth has done at Lafayette, and I'm honestly surprised that it looks like he's going to make it through another spin of the coaching carousel without getting a bigger gig. After some struggles in the wake of losing QB Blaine Gautier in September, Hudspeth managed to hold the team together and had them playing their best ball at the end of the season behind the arm (and legs) of Terrence Broadway, even coming shockingly close to defeating the Florida Gators in the Swamp. Regardless of the injury to UF QB Jeff Driskel, ULL should never be that tough of an out for a Top 5 team. On the other hand, East Carolina is 8-4 mainly because they're a decent team that played an exceptionally weak schedule in the worst division of perhaps the...

ECU looks to slow Navy's ground game

Navy couldn't stop scoring in its last trip to East Carolina because the Pirates couldn't stop the Midshipmen from running.

So naturally, the priority is clear for coach Ruffin McNeill's team: slow their productive ground game.

The Pirates will become bowl eligible for the sixth time since 2006 on Saturday if they defeat a Navy team that administered quite a beating the last time it came to Greenville. The Midshipmen's 76-35 win in 2010 marked the most points allowed by the Pirates at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.

The key for East Carolina (5-3) - as it always is for each of Navy's opponents - is containing a triple-option offense that routinely produces some of the top rushing totals in the nation.

The Midshipmen, whose 521 yards rushing in that blowout were the most allowed at home by an East Carolina defense, rank 13th in the Bowl Subdivision this season with an average of 236 yards. The Pirates have been stout against the run, allowing an average of 123 yards on the ground.

3 ECU WRs suspended for opener for rules violation

Three East Carolina receivers have been suspended for the Pirates' opening game because they violated undisclosed team policy.

Coach Ruffin McNeill said Wednesday that senior Dayon Arrington, sophomore Danny Webster and redshirt freshman Antonio Cannon will miss the Appalachian State game.

McNeill says the team has rules in place and ''we expect those to be followed, unconditionally.''

None of the receivers were listed on the depth chart released earlier this week.

Arrington has 13 catches for 124 yards in 23 career games. Webster had 43 catches for 418 yards with six starts in 2011, but missed the spring with an injured right knee.

4 players in mix for starting QB job at ECU

To call it a quarterback controversy at East Carolina would be quite an understatement.

The Pirates have four - yes, four - players competing for the starting job, and coach Ruffin McNeill said Saturday that ''I think they're all, right now, in the mix.''

When East Carolina opens in four weeks against Appalachian State, the starting QB could be junior Rio Johnson. Or sophomore Shane Carden. Or redshirt freshman Cody Keith. Or fifth-year senior and former walk-on Brad Wornick.

McNeill says there's no need to hurry and pick one because all four have been around long enough to become familiar with coordinator Lincoln Riley's offense. Instead, the priority is on ''making the right decision and what's best for the football team.''

The Pirates are replacing two-year starter Dominique Davis.

Miguel Paul scored a career-high 25 points as East Carolina pulled away in the second half from North Carolina Central 84-76 Thursday night.

The back-and-forth first half was tied eight times, with East Carolina leading 39-35 at the break.

After the Eagles (7-7) opened the second half with Nick Chasten's 3-pointer to cut the deficit to one, the Pirates went on a decisive 15-3 run.

East Carolina 38, UCF 31

Dominique Davis threw four touchdown passes, including a pair to Reese Wiggins, but it took a 56-yard touchdown run by Torrance Hunt with 2:10 left in the game for East Carolina to beat Central Florida 38-31 on Saturday.

East Carolina (5-6, 4-3 Conference USA) broke a two-game losing streak and kept its bowl hopes alive. The Pirates finish their season at Marshall next Saturday. UCF (4-7, 2-5) lost for the third straight time and was knocked out of bowl contention.

Davis finished 19 of 31 for 203 yards but was intercepted once. His four touchdown passes matched his season high set in East Carolina's season-opening loss to South Carolina. One of his scoring passes to Wiggins was for 84 yards, the fourth longest in East Carolina history.

Davis also added a career-high 62 rushing yards on 12 carries.
