Marshall Offers Wide Receiver

Marshall University’s football program is known for quite a few things. Of course there is the Movie, “We Are Marshall,” and there is the winning (most wins in the 1990’s,” and then there are the players. Sure, the Herd produced Ahmad Bradshaw, Chad Pennington, and Byron Leftwich, but one of the primary positions Marshall has produced, wide receiver.

Tepid on Kane

It’s not that I hate that DeAndre Kane is transferring to Pitt. Afterall, he is intending to be a graduate transfer so it is a one-year deal. Meaning he isn’t tying up the scholarship beyond 2013-14. That is assuming he passes the two courses he has to take, but why worry about academics with Kane. I mean he only needed an extra year of prep school and still wasn’t able to be academically eligible at Marshall (!?) as a freshman. How could anyone be worried?
Well, there are chemistry/personality issues.
It’s just a hunch, but I reckon Kane didn’t receive a letter of recommendation from Herrion after last month’s falling out.
Just in case you felt the statement from Tom Herrion on Kane leaving was nebulous.
Marshall coach Tom Herrion cut loose DeAndre Kane because he was tired of his act.
Now, just because he and Herrion clashed is not enough to say he’s a big risk. Herrion, himself, can be quite prickly. Especially when the team struggles. And Marshall was a big disappointment last year.

DeAndre Kane to transfer to Pitt

Pitt's basketball team for next season is finally starting to take shape. A few days ago, the team landed JUCO center, Joseph Uchebo. Next up? Marshall transfer DeAndre Kane.
Kane's short and sweet statement to CBS Sports on the move:

"It's a perfect situation for me," Kane told CBSSports.com.

He recently visited USC, but has instead decided on the Panthers.
The ironic thing is that Kane leaves Marshall, a program run by former Pitt assistant Tom Herrion. It's believed that the two didn't see eye to eye and Kane is on his way out. Now, Jamie Dixon will hope to keep him in line and you can bet that Dixon knows all about his previous situation - whatever it may be.
Typically transfers have to sit out a year, but as Kane is expected to graduate this summer, he should be eligible immediately - and that's the key thing considering Pitt's situation for next year. He only has one year of eligibility left, but Kane is a potential game-changer. He averaged 15 points and nearly e

Dixon Taking Big Chance on Kane

Remember DeAndre Kane? A one-time teammate of DeJuan Blair and D.J. Kennedy at Schenley? Jamie Dixon always liked Kane. He recruited him despite his academic struggles. Originally Kane was supposed to be part of (someone’s) 2009 class. But he needed prep school so it became 2010 when he actually was a freshman at Marshall.
He’s a graduate transfer. He has one more year of eligibility left, and it came down to USC and Pitt. The 6-4 guard has decided that his years of knowing Dixon and coming home was the pick.
The Marshall transfer, who hails from Pittsburgh, told CBSSports.com that he will commit to Jamie Dixon and the Panthers this weekend on a visit. Kane returned from a trip to USC this past weekend, and also considered Saint Mary’s, but said the chance to play at home and in the ACC was too much to pass up.
“It’s a perfect situation for me,” Kane told CBSSports.com.
Kane averaged 15.1 points and seven assists last season for the Thundering Herd…

SOTT Interview: Antavious Wilson, Marshall University

At 6’1″ 198 lbs., wide receiver Antavious Wilson broke out his senior season at Marshall with 69 receptions for 741 yards and 9 touchdowns, becoming a 2012 All-Conference USA Honorable Mention. After a stellar season his first year on the field with the Thundering Herd, Wilson suffered injuries and struggled through his sophomore and junior seasons. Coming back his senior year, he showed he is equally willing to block and catch and is excited for an opportunity to land on an NFL team.

First of all how has your preparation for the draft been going and who is training you?

My training is going great! I’ve been training with former NFL WR Chris Chambers down in Miami. I have learned a lot from Chris. I’m very blessed to have had this time. Also a member at my agency, Sam Leaf, has really taken the time to get to know me and truly put me in the best position to succeed.

What does Marshall mean to you as a person and what did the university do for you?

One of eight Pahokee High School, Fla., seniors to sign a Division One football scholarship in 2008, Antavious Wilson had one of the great rookie campaigns at Marshall. After redshirting his first year on campus, Wilson busted onto the scene in 2009, catching 60 passes for 724 yards and 3 touchdowns. Wilson tore his ACL mid-way through the 2010 season and it affected him throughout 2011 as he only caught 29 passes for 462 yards. Fully recovered for his senior year, Wilson finished second on the Herd with 69 catches, 741 receiving yards, and nine touchdowns.

Aaron Dobson hails from Dunbar, West Virginia, a rare NFL prospect from the Mountain State. Coming out of South Charleston High School, Dobson was only rated a two star prospect by Rivals.com. In fact, Marshall was his only Division One scholarship offer.
It did not take the Thundering Herd coaching staff long to realize they had a steal on their hands. After a freshman year that included 15 catches for 362 yards Dobson doubled his production as a sophomore, hauling in 44 passes for 689 yards and five touchdowns.
Former Louisville Commit Ryan Taylor Signs With Marshall

Former Louisville commit Ryan Taylor has signed a letter of intent with the Marshall Thundering Herd. Taylor was committed to Louisville for nearly two years, however academic issues led to Louisville and Taylor mutually parting ways. He was originally a member of the 2011, but reclassified to 2012 and attended prep school at Hargrave Military Academy this past season. Taylor averaged 22 points and 14 rebounds per game in his one season at Hargrave.
Scout.com ranks Taylor as the 27th best small forward prospect in the 2012 class. He also had scholarship offers from Arkansas, Seton Hall, Dayton, Cincinnati, and Boston College. Taylor reportedly still has some academic issues to work through before he will be eligible. Don’t be surprised if he takes a prop year next season in order to get his grades in order. Another former Louisville commit, Justin Coleman, did the same thing when he signed with Marshall.

Marshall football player Warren kicked off team

Marshall football coach Doc Holliday has dismissed defensive back Phillip Warren and plans to discipline three other players following their weekend arrests outside a Huntington bar.

Holliday said Tuesday that Warren has been kicked off the team for an unspecified violation of team rules and policies.

A criminal complaint accuses Warren of striking a police officer who was assisting patrons out of a bar early Sunday.

Warren is charged with battery on police, disorderly conduct and obstructing an officer.

Three other players were arrested. Holliday says linebacker Stefone Grace, running back Martin Ward and defensive back Corie Wilson will be ''disciplined internally.''

A Cabell County Magistrate Court clerk said she had no information Tuesday on court dates for the players.

Warren started one game last season and compiled 26 tackles.

Marshall Baseball Player finds a way to Steal Spotlight from Guy who took a Bottle Rocket to his Ass

Prepare yourself for one of the most biggest scene stealing drama queen stories in college sports history. The Thundering Herd of Marshall should banish this guy from campus. From UPI:
A West Virginia college student is suing a fraternity for negligence, claiming he fell off a deck because a bottle rocket went off in another student’s rectum.

Louis Helmburg III of Marshall University is suing the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity and fraternity member Travis Hughes, claiming he suffered injuries at a party in 2011 after the allegedly drunken Hughes attempted to fire a bottle rocket from his anus, Courthouse News Service reported Thursday. “Instead of launching, the bottle rocket blew up in the defendant’s rectum, and this startled the plaintiff and caused him to jump back,” and fall off the deck, the lawsuit contends.

Remember Justin Coleman?

Marshall head coach Tom Herrion has dismissed former Louisville commit Justin Coleman from the team. A press release issued by Marshall’s athletic department cited “Conduct detrimental to the program and not upholding its standards and expectations.”
Coleman was initially the prized recruit for Louisville’s 2010 class. Because he was a partial qualifier he was not eligible to play in the Big East, which led to him enrolling at Marshall in his hometown of Huntington, WV. Coleman had to sit out during the 2010-2011 season because of academic issues. This was his first season with the Thundering Herd. Coleman was considered to be one of the better athletes in Conference USA. He averaged 5.5 points and 2.5 rebounds in 17 games.
Earlier in the season he was suspended for sending text messages on his cell phone during halftime of a game. Sounds like Louisville may have dodged a bullet with this one.

Marshall player suspended for using cell phone : Marriage proposal goes wrong at UCLA Basketball game (Video)

The Marshall Thundering Herd are having one of their best seasons in a long time. Right now they are 10-4 and on a verge of a NCAA tournament berth. Now one of their freshman Justin Coleman will be suspended for a while for using a cell phone during a game.
In Marshall’s last game against Belmont Coleman played in the lst half but he was a little bit late to get to the bench when the 2nd half was about to start. Why? Because he was using a cell phone.
This is what Pierce Greenberg of The Mid-Majority witnessed and had to say about the indecent.
As the second half commenced, Coleman started it behind the bench. Not on the bench, behind the bench and the coaches, far away from the nearest action. Then, I saw something I don’t think I’ve ever seen at any level of sport. Coleman slyly slipped a cell phone out of the sleeve of his warm-ups and proceeded to look at it for most of the second half.
This really doesn’t surprise me considered the world we live in now a days, but come on can’t...

Justin ColemanBy Paul Seaver (TheArenaPulse) The news broke on Tuesday that Marshall head coach Tom Herrion had made the decision to suspend freshman guard Justin Coleman. The reason behind the decision: Coleman was reportedly seen texting on the Marshall bench during the team's loss to Belmont last Thursday. The act was noted as a violation of team rules, as Coleman has been suspended indefinitely. The 6-foot-5 freshman was a former Louisville commit, but after failing to qualify for the Cardinals, Coleman enrolled at Marshall, headlining Herrion's incoming class.Through the team's first 12 games, Coleman is averaging 6.2 points and 2.9 rebounds per game. The guard did not appear in Saturday's loss to Akron. With the program considered on-the-rise, Marshall now turns its focus to league play, beginning the conference schedule with UTEP on Wednesday night.Marshall enters the contest having dropped back-to-back games for the second time this season.
Slow Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl ends up 'special'

ST. PETERSBURG For more than three-and-a-halfquarters Tuesday night, the 2011 Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl between Marshall andFlorida International University was anything but special.

But after a markedly dull defensive battle and a dearth of memorable moments ina 10-10 standoff, the Thundering Herd's special teams made the difference asthey have done so often this season.

A blocked punt by Zach Dunston midway through the fourth quarter Marshallsseventh blocked kick this season paved the way to a 39-yard field goal byTyler Warner with 5:16 left to put the Thundering Herd up for good.

And the win was sealed by the truly special combination of freshman quarterbackRakeem Cato and junior wide receiver Aaron Dobson. Their second touchdownconnection of the night a fourth-down, 35-yarder with 30 seconds on the clock sealed a 20-10 triumph amid chants of "We are Marshall!!" fromjubilant green-clad fans inside Tropicana Field.

It gave the Thundering Herd their first bowl win under second-year coach Doc Hollidayand their second one overall in the past three seasons. And it was particularlysweet for a team that started off the season with three losses in its firstfour games and four in its initial six, a team which finished the season 7-6.

In the end, Holliday wasn't at all surprised the game turned on a blocked punt. His team has now won all seven games in which it has come up with a block.

"It's been a strength of ours all season long," he said. "Weweren't getting anything done offensively and we had to create something."

Holliday heaped praise on his freshman quarterback, noting that Cato was a"true freshman" who only joined the Herd in August and didn't takeover the starting job until midway through the season. And Dobson, voted theBowl's Most Valuable Player for his touchdown catches of 31 and 35 yards, wasequally effusive.

"It's crazy," he said of Cato's rapid maturation. "From Game 1to now, it's been a big difference. He's grown a lot. He's got a lot ofexperience under his belt and he's going to be a great player."

For FIU, it was a disappointing end to a landmark eight-win season, the mostwins in the school's history. The Panthers were making their second straightbowl appearance, coming off a 34-32 victory over Toledo last year in the LittleCaesars Pizza Bowl, but couldn't hold off Marshall after building a 10-3 leadin the first half courtesy of a 2-yard end-around touchdown run by seniorAll-American wide receiver T.Y. Hilton and 46-yard field goal by Jack Griffin.

But Hilton, who broke an array of FIU and Sun Belt Conference records in hisspectacular career as an all-purpose star, fumbled after making a catch as thePanthers tried to come back from their 13-10 deficit. Marshall recovered theball at FIU's 40 and put the game away.

"We worked all year long on ball security, and I was running and justtrying to make a play for my team," said Hilton, voted the Panthers MVPafter catching eight passes for 88 yards to go with his rushing TD. "We'vedone that all year long we needed a play and I made the play. But it justwasn't my night."

Panthers head coach Mario Cristobal, whose team had blocked two kicks of itsown in the previous three games, tipped his hat to Marshall's kick-blockingefforts.

"When it's a real tight game, special teams become a crucial part of thegame," he said. "They blocked the punt and I was proud of ourdefense. They made a great stand and held them to three points."

The pivotal play was accompanied by ample confusion. FIU was lined up from its22 to make its ninth punt of the game when Dunston raced through for the block.Omar Brown made the recovery but was flagged for an illegal forward pass as hefought his way toward the end zone. The penalty, coupled with a personal foul, placedthe ball at FIU's 23 instead.

The Panther defense clamped down, even forcing a fumble on first down that wasrecovered by Marshall. The Herd wound up facing a fourth and 9, but Warnerconverted his second field goal of the night for the go-ahead and decisivescore.

"It just came down to execution," said Cristobal of the blocked punt."The guys played hard but we just didn't execute. They overloaded one sidebut we didn't make the play."

There wasnt an abundance of noteworthy plays in the early going before thespirited crowd of 20,072 in the fourth Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl.

Marshall broke though first, taking a 3-0 lead on its second possession of thegame. Cato led the offense down field from its 35, with the big play a 25-yardcompletion to sophomore wide receiver Jermaine Kelson. The drive stalled atFIU's 20, where Warner converted a 37-yard field goal with 6:37 left in thefirst quarter.

The Thundering Herd defense followed by forcing a three-and-out before AndreBooker returned the punt 39 yards to FIU's 44. But on the next play, Cato'spass over the middle was picked off by cornerback Richard Leonard, who raced 34yards to Marshall's 47.

That play seemed to energize the Panthers and their fans. Sophomore runningback Kendrick Rhodes kicked the offense into gear with consecutive runs of 13and eight yards, and five plays later, FIU faced a third and 6 at the Marshall16. Following a timeout, Cato found his favorite target, Hilton, for a 14-yardcompletion over the middle to the 2. And on the next play, Hilton took the handofffrom Cato on an end-around from the left and sprinted in for the touchdown.Following Griffin's PAT, the Panthers had a 7-3 lead with 1:31 left in thequarter.

FIU later added to its advantage after forcing a punt and taking over at its 35with 8:59 to play in the second quarter. This time, senior tailback DarrietPerry got things rolling with back-to-back runs of 19 and 5 yards to theMarshall 41. Quarterback Wesley Carroll then hit three straight short passesbefore the drive fizzled at the 29 on a fourth and 5. But Griffin salvaged itby booming a 46-yard field goal to extend the lead to 10-3 with 5:41 left inthe half.

The teams then traded uneventful possessions before Marshall began its lastdrive of the half from its 45. Only 1:38 remained on the clock when Cato wentto work, connecting on three short passes for a first down at the FIU 42. On secondand 10, he found Travon Van in the flat, and the freshman running back dartedaway from two defenders and cut inside for a 16-yard gain to the 26.

A false start penalty pushed the Herd back to its 31. But following a time out,Cato lofted a perfectly timed pass down the left sideline to Dobson, who foughtoff tight coverage to hold on for a touchdown with 23 seconds left beforeintermission to tie the game.

Neither team could get any offense going in the third quarter, or much of thefourth, for that matter. The game devolved into a punt-fest, with 15 combined. But the one that changed everything was the block by a team that thrives onthem.

And quarterback Cato added the finishes touches to a phenomenal season.

"My motto is pressure busts pipes and I didn't want to bust anypipes," he said. "Me being a freshman, I'm human. I'm going to makemistakes. But I just wanted to go out and have fun, and win a game for theseniors."

With a performance that wound up special indeed.

Marshall memorial service set for 1970 plane crash

Marshall University is holding its annual memorial service honoring the 75 victims of the 1970 plane crash.

Monday's service in West Virginia is at the Marshall Memorial Student Center plaza.

The Marshall football team's plane crashed just short of Huntington's Tri-State Airport returning from a game at East Carolina on Nov. 14, 1970. It was the worst disaster in U.S. sports history.

Rick Meckstroth, a freshman member of Marshall's 1970 football team, will be the keynote speaker Monday.

As a freshman, Rick Meckstroth was ineligible to play for Marshall that season. He became a three-year starter for what became known as the Young Thundering Herd.

The Cincinnati native says he lived on the same floor and practiced with the varsity players every day that season.
