Evaluating Ricky Tarrant to Alabama

Ricky Tarrant was a lightly recruited guard out of the Birmingham suburb of Pleasant Grove. He signed with Tulane, and then surprised everyone by having a 1st Team All Conference season. Near the end of that year, Tulane lost their star in Kendall Timmons, and Tarrant had to take over the team down the stretch. He played well, but looked tired. By year's end he had played over 82% of the minutes for the Green Wave. For a freshman, that's a ton. Coach Conroy promised to keep him better rested this season. The result? He played over 88% of the minutes (3rd most in the conference) and once again wore down at the end. In the last 7 games of the season he made just 8-31 2s and turned the ball over more than 3 times a game. Wearing down wasn't the only repeat from his freshman performance. In fact, he was largely the exact same player (not necessarily a bad thing when you're an All Conference performer). His assist rate, free throw rate, 2-pt% and 3-pt% all went slig...

Tulane Green Wave getting new football helmets

Tulane Green Wave quarterback Jordy Joseph sent out a tweet, along with this photo saying that this was their “new swag for next year.”
Check the swag for next year. #newtulane #stateoftulane #wamp instagram.com/p/X5HMNHp6Ml/
— Jordy Joseph (@j_wayne3) April 9, 2013

If it turns out that these are their new helmets, Tulane did a fantastic job. They all look outstanding and someone in the athletic department needs to be commended for their work. The robin’s egg blue helmet with Tulane logo is by far the best helmet, and I can’t wait to see what their jerseys look like with the new helmets. It seems that they broke out these helmets just in time for when they leave for the American Athletic Conference formerly known as the Big East.

Tulane may be getting some new uniforms…or at least some new helmets.
Six Tulane men's basketball players transferring

Six Tulane basketball players are transferring and men's coach Ed Conroy says he is disappointed that 2011-12 Conference USA freshman of the year Ricky Tarrant is part of the mass exodus.

He said Friday that Tarrant's departure is unexpected but the other transfers are not surprising.

Tulane is coming off its first 20-win season and postseason tournament since 2000. It will have no returning players who averaged even 5.0 points this past season.

Conroy says junior Josh Davis could turn professional or play somewhere else as a grad student. The first-team All-Conference selection led the league in rebounding and will graduate in May. The coach says Tarrant wants to play closer to his home in Birmingham, Ala., and the others leaving are reserves looking for more playing time.

QB Nick Montana, LS Michael Lizanich, and DT Chris Davenport have already joined the team for the semester after transferring or graduating high school early. The class so far is as follows:

Montana's son to play QB for Tulane

Tulane says it has received a national letter of intent from junior college quarterback Nick Montana, the son of Hall-of-Fame NFL quarterback Joe Montana.

The younger Montana threw for 2,652 yards and 22 touchdowns this past season at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif.

Tulane says the 6-foot-3, 215-pound Montana, who has two years of eligibility remaining, is enrolling this spring, meaning he'll be able to participate in spring practice and compete for the starting job next fall.

Green Wave coach Curtis Johnson says bringing Montana in was among his top goals for what will be his second recruiting class.

Nick Montana says Johnson's system is a good fit for him. He says Tulane's academic standards are also important to him as he pursues a business degree.

The Scarlet T: Josh Davis, Tulane

In September I said my piece on the transfer issue in college basketball. In light of today’s news that the NCAA is revisiting the nuts and bolts of transfer regulations, every blog and sports page on the internet is going to have something to say about it. And Run the Floor is no different. Only I said everything that I needed to say in September, so just read that.

Instead, I’ll be using this news to start a new feature at Run the Floor. It’s called ‘the Scarlet T’ and what it is is a check-in with a transfer. Where’d they come from? Where did they go? What happened?

Today it’s Tulane junior Josh Davis.

Davis was a Raleigh kid, and he committed to play for Sidney Lowe and the hometown Wolfpack. As a freshman he played just over 10 minutes a game, and stood out for his hustle and motor rather than his stats. But he came in as part of a talented six man class which made minutes difficult to come by. Then, after CJ Leslie signed during Davis’ freshman year, he saw the wri...

Tulane Moves To The Big East

The Big East became a little more festive by announcing that the Tulane Green Wave will be joining the conference as an all-sports member starting in the 2013-14 season. The move came as an attempt to bolster the quickly thinning ranks of the Big East with Rutgers departing for the greener pastures of the Big Ten and Louisville, Cincinnati, and UConn all vying for spots in the ACC (more on that later).

Currently, new Big East commissioner Mike Aresco is in the midst of trying to negotiate a new tv deal and with the loss of the New York City market (potentially what Rutgers brings in) Aresco was trying to fill the void left by that market. Enter New Orleans... potentially.

Nevermind the fact that Tulane hasn't been very good at all in football recently (last bowl game was in 2002), or basketball (last went to the NCAA tournament in 1994-95) and their most recent postseason appearance of any of the big three sports was in baseball in 2008. The key to this move was addin...

Tulane to join Big East in 2014

Tulane is joining the Big East as a full member in 2014.
"I would go as far to say as this is a historic day for Tulane University ... the Big East is coming to the Big Easy," school President Scott Cowen said.
East Carolina will also join the rebuilding Big East for football only in 2014, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity Tuesday because neither the conference nor the school was prepared to make an official announcement. East Carolina, located in Greenville, N.C., has a news conference scheduled for 5 p.m.
Tulane and East Carolina currently play in Conference USA. They will become the fifth and sixth C-USA schools to join the rebuilding Big East in the last two years.
Rutgers announced last week that it would leave the Big East for the Big Ten. Rutgers would like to join the Big Ten by 2014, along with Maryland, but the Scarlet Knights have left their departure date from the Big East ambiguous.

Report: Tulane Will Join The Big East In All Sports

ESPN’s Joe Schad is reporting that Tulane will leave Conference USA and join the Big East in all sports. I haven’t been able to find out exactly when Tulane will be a full member of the league, but I assume it will be next season.
Tulane may give the Big East a TV market in New Orleans, but the Green Wave certainly won’t make the league any stronger in football. Tulane hasn’t had a winning record in a decade and finished 2-10 this season.
Tulane has been a member of Conference USA since 1995. Tulane is the fifth C-USA school to be uprooted from the Big East. Memphis, Central Florida, SMU, and Houston are set to join the league in 2013.
The Big East is now officially Conference USA 2.0

Tulane's new football home will be Yulman Stadium

Tulane says its new campus football facility will be known as Yulman Stadium.

Richard Yulman is the owner of the mattress manufacturing company Serta International and a member of the Tulane board. He and his wife, Janet, donated $15 million toward construction of the $55 million stadium. The 25,000-seat facility is scheduled to open in 2014.

The stadium will also carry the name of New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson and his wife, Gayle, who donated $7.5 million. The playing surface will be known as Benson Field.

The Green Wave currently plays downtown at the mammoth Superdome, which is far too large for a Conference USA program that has struggled for wins and fan support. The school hopes that moving to an intimate stadium on campus will improve its fortunes.

The mayor's office in Kenner, La., said in a news release that Gibson passed away at his home on Tuesday.

Gibson, who also coached at Kansas State and Louisville, had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as ''Lou Gehrig's disease,'' and was fighting it for the past year.

''Our sympathies go out to the entire Gibson family as we mourn the loss of one of our great coaches and ambassador,'' said Tulane athletic director Rick Dickson. ''I have known Coach Gibson since his recruitment of me for Kansas State in the 1970s and have always had the highest regards for him, both as a coach and as a friend. I will miss our many chats.''

Gibson coached at Tulane from 1980-82, compiling a 17-17 record. He took the Green Wave to the Hall of Fame Bowl in his first season, but Tulane lost 34-15 to Arkansas.

Gibson also coached the Arena Football League's New Orleans Night

Report: Tulane hires Johnson as coach

A person familiar with the decision says Tulane's next head coach will be Saints wide receiver coach Curtis Johnson.

The person, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the hiring has not been announced, says Johnson could be introduced as early as Monday, and the Saints declined comment.

Johnson was on the sideline with the Saints on Sunday night for their game against the Detroit Lions.

Tulane is hoping Johnson, a New Orleans native who has been with the Saints since 2006, can turn around a program that has not been to a bowl since 2002.

The Green Wave has gone 31-76 since then, never winning more than five games in a season.

In October, coach Bob Toledo resigned with a 15-40 record in four-and-a-half seasons.

Tulane 65, No. 20 LSU 62

Danielle Blagg's three-point play with 1.6 seconds left lifted Tulane to a 65-62 overtime victory over No. 20 LSU on Saturday night.

LSU rallied from a 10-point deficit with 11:08 left to send the game into overtime. The Lady Tigers had a chance to win the game in regulation, but Jeanne Kenney only made one of two free throws with 1.4 seconds left to tie the game at 58.

Trailing by two in overtime, LSU's Krystal Forthan hit a jumper to tie the score at 62 with 26 seconds left. That set up Blagg's game-winning play.

LSU was playing its first game since its' 51-40 victory against No. 14 Georgetown last Wednesday. The loss on Saturday snapped LSU's streak of 11 consecutive road wins against Louisiana teams since a 76-72 loss at Tulane on Dec. 31, 2000.

LSU leads the all-time series against the Green Wave with a 28-5 record.
