Draft Zone Spotlight: Chris Hubbard, OG, UAB

Draft Zone Spotlight: Chris Hubbard, OG, UAB
Chris Hubbard finished the year for the University of Alabama-Birmingham as one of the top rated offensive linemen ever to play for the Blazers. Hubbard was named an All American for the Blazers this year, but this kid is amazing. A former C-USA All-Freshman Team selection, Hubbard has had an impact since his true freshman campaign and has played in 28 total games for UAB prior to this season. Hubbard, the anchor of the Blazers’ offensive line, picked up his first postseason all-conference honor after being named as a 2012 preseason all-league lineman last summer. He was an honorable mention choice last season. This is the fourth consecutive year that UAB has had a first-team offensive lineman selection.
How many teams were recruiting you coming out of high school and how did you make your decision?
There were about 15-20 teams recruiting me out of high school. I made my final decision based on closeness to my family.
Who was your favor...

Darrin Reaves rushed for a season-high 223 yards and two touchdowns and Alabama-Birmingham erased a 16-point halftime deficit to defeat Southern Mississippi 27-19 Saturday night.

The Golden Eagles (0-9, 0-6 Conference USA) led 16-0 at the half, but the Blazers (2-7, 1-4) scored three second-half touchdowns and hit two long field goals to seal the comeback.

Reaves rushed for 169 of his 223 yards in the second half and scored on plays of 14 and 8 yards.

Reaves' first touchdown put the Blazers on the board just after the half. His second put the game out of reach with 2:41 left.

UAB quarterback Austin Brown recovered from a shaky first half to complete 17 of his 29 pass attempts for 228 yards, including a third-quarter, 18-yard touchdown pass to Sam Accursio.

UAB feels OK even after No. 8 SCarolina wins 49-6

UAB coach Garrick McGee said he learned some things from the Blazers' 49-6 loss to No. 8 South Carolina on Saturday night.

And most of them were good lessons.

McGee was proud that UAB (0-2) was still in the game in the second half. He also was glad his team kept all-Southeastern Conference running back Marcus Lattimore mostly in check.

''I think we are getting in position to go after the Conference USA championship,'' said McGee, who is in his first year coaching. ''Even though the win column doesn't show it, we are a better football team than we were two weeks ago.''

The Blazers ran 79 plays to just 58 plays for South Carolina (3-0) and held the ball for more than 36 minutes.

UAB outgained the Gamecocks 178-130 in the first half, but D.J. Swearinger's 65-yard fumble return for a touchdown after the ball slipped out of quarterback Jonathan Perry's hands and a 19-yard punt from deep in UAB territory late in the second quarter put the Blazers in a 21-6 hole a

Giants Select UAB OT Matt McCants (Rd.6, No. 201)

With the 201st overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Giants select Matt McCants, OT (UAB). Terrific pass blocking left tackle with a solid game. Works to bend his knees, stays square and has the ability to adjust to defenders. Blocks with leverage, keeps the opponent in front of him and a terrific pass protector who makes good use of angles. Gets his hands into defenders and fights to keep opponents away. Patient, moves well on his feet and displays the ability to pull across the line of scrimmage and get out front then block on the second level. Source: Sports Illustrated Attached Thumbnails

UAB seeking coach who can win games, fans

The UAB Blazers are searching for a football coach who can win games and win over the community.

Athletic director Brian Mackin said Monday building enough support for an on-campus stadium will be critical to the long-term success of the program.

Mackin will lead a national search to replace Neil Callaway, who was fired Sunday after posting losing records in each of his five seasons.

The lack of fan and financial support led trustees for the University of Alabama system to shoot down a proposal for a stadium allowing UAB to move its home games from aging Legion Field.

Mackin says the Blazers ''need someone to come in here and sell this program and recruit and win.''

They were last in Conference USA in attendance this season and finished 3-9.
