UTEP Miners Basketball: Can They Be a Force in the Future?

Believe it or not, UTEP is setting themselves up for Conference-USA dominance. Former USC head coach Tim Floyd has the Miners in the right path for the future. In the next couple of years, Conference-USA will be depleted of a lot of its talent.
Memphis, East Carolina, UCF, Houston, and SMU will all be departing, leaving UTEP as a viable conference favorite. So far this season, they are 11-8 (4-2) which is a relative improvement from their 15-17 (7-9) record last year.
Coach Floyd has put together one of the best mid-major recruiting classes for 2013. The Miners will bring in five-star recruit Isaac Hamilton who is the fourth-best shooting guard in the nation, according to Rivals.com.
Bolstering the 2013 class, Floyd has also gotten Vince Hunter, a four-star recruit, to commit as well. UTEP was previously an afterthought to high-schoolers of this caliber. However, El Paso is suddenly a logical destination for recruits to play.
UTEP could experience the same type of success that Memphis had during John Calip

Shamarr Bowden of ECU Punched Konner Tucker of UTEP Twice in the Face (Video)

Check out Shamarr Bowden of ECU punching Konner Tucker of UTEP in the face twice in their game on Saturday. The two players went to the ground after a layup attempt when Marshall Guilmette of UTEP put back a huge dunk. While Marshall was hanging on the rim Bowden dropped two huge punches to Tucker's face. Not really sure what caused the fight, but it wasn't pretty. Bowden is no stranger to trouble, he was arrested last April on gun charges, and is sure to face some action from the NCAA for this fight. Check out the video below.

Oh, and did I forget to mention that McKenzie Moore of UTEP got some pay back for his teammate when he hit a game winning buzzer beater? Well, he did. UTEP won the game 68-67.

This wasn't the only fight over the weekend. Check out this huge fan brawl at the pro bowl.

Shamarr Bowden Of ECU Punches Konner Tucker Of UTEP (Video)

This has been a violent weekend in sports. Trent Williams got knocked over the head at a night club in Honolulu. Yesterday fans got so bored at the Pro Bowl that they started brawling in the stands.
Now comes video courtesy of The Big Lead where a college kid absolutely loses his mind. Shamarr Bowden is a 6’4 guard for the Pirates who has provided some offensive spark for them this season.
This weekend Bowden provided some punch of his own, in a bad way, when he two pieced Konner Tucker of UTEP after the two got tangled up.
Bowden is throwing punches while his teammate Marshall Guilmette hangs from the rim after throwing down a monster dunk.
Bowden reportedly has a bit of mean streak after being arrested last April on gun charges. Bowden was arrested after firing rounds from a .45 caliber into the air during an argument.

BUZZER BEATER: UTEP's McKenzie Moore Hits A Half Court Bomb For The Win

UTEP’s McKenzie Moore might have kept the Miners
NCAA Tournament hopes alive. Moore hit a
shot from mid-court at the buzzer on the road to shoot down East Carolina in a
battle between Conference USA bubble teams.
Here’s the highlights with the big shot at the end.

"Anytime you make one like that at the end, you
feel like you've got a horseshoe up your tail.” UTEP head coach Tim Floyd said.
“It was a great win and it's a spirited
locker room, obviously. Our young team needed something like that.”
"The last time I made a shot like that was
probably in seventh grade.” Moore said. “I was playing for Martinez Junior High
and I made a half court shot at the buzzer at halftime against Dallas Ranch
Middle School."

‘It was a heck of a
basketball game and heartbreaking loss for us," East Carolina Head Coach
Jeff Lebo said. "You kind of feel like you have it and then getting it
taken away from you like that is ...

UTEP 34, Southern Miss. 33

Autrey Golden returned a fourth-quarter kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown and the Texas-El Paso defense held when it counted most to propel the Miners past Southern Mississippi 34-33 Saturday night.

After Golden's big return gave UTEP (3-8, 2-5 Conference USA) the 34-27 lead, the Golden Eagles (0-11, 0-7) responded with an 86-yard drive that cut the lead to one with 2:48 left. Southern Miss coach Ellis Johnson opted for a two-point conversion attempt, but Arsenio Favor's pass was intercepted by Demarcus Kizzie in the end zone.

UTEP quarterback Blaire Sullivan finished with 155 yards on 9-of-15 passing and rushed for 98 yards and a score. Nathan Jeffery added 76 yards on the ground, including touchdown runs of one and three yards in the second quarter.

Favor, the fourth Golden Eagles' quarterback to start in 2012, completed 16 of 22 attempts for a season-high 374 yards and two touchdowns.

Flashback: BYU Abuses A Hapless UTEP Team

On this date, 31 years ago, the Brigham Young Cougars went to the edge of the Mountain Time Zone to play a team dressed in blue and orange. The UTEP Miners were no match for BYU. For the fourth consecutive season, BYU held UTEP to single digit points. The Cougars also topped the 60 point mark against UTEP for the fourth time in the LaVell Edwards era.BYU didn’t waste anytime scoring in the 20th meeting between the two schools. Things were so out of hand, starting quarterback Jim McMahon left the game during the second quarter. He made a brief appearance again in the third quarter. After that he was done and two other quarterbacks split the rest of the snaps. Vai Sikahema had a good first half, as well. He ended the game with 87 yards on just 8 carries. The game was 48-0 at halftime. BYU led 58-0 in the fourth quarter before UTEP scored their only points of the game. The game ended 65-8 in BYU’s favor. It was the most points BYU would score in a single game that season. BYU had won...

Flashback: BYU Continues Dominance of UTEP

Exactly 20 years ago, today, the Brigham Young Cougars opened the season taking on the UTEP Miners in El Paso, Texas. Not only was it the first game of the 1992 season, it was BYU’s first game without three-year starter and Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer. Replacing the NCAA record holder for career passing yards and touchdown passes was sophomore John Walsh. UTEP was the prefect foe for making such a transition. The Cougars had beaten the Miners in 14 of their last 15 meetings. In the first quarter, Walsh showed he had picked up a thing or two watching Detmer the year before, like who to throw the ball to close to the end zone. The Torrance, California native connected twice with wide receiver Eric Drage, Detmer’s favorite target in 1991, for touchdowns before the game was 15 minutes old. Drage led BYU with 6 receptions for 99 yards. He was well on his way to another 1,000 yard receiving season. Besides the two touchdown grabs, Drage also had a 42-yard catch. Walsh’s longest pass of...
