Yanks beat Army 10-5 in final preseason tuneup

Brennan Boesch and Melky Mesa hit home runs and the New York Yankees closed their preseason with a 10-5 victory over Army on Saturday in the revival of an old tradition.

The Yankees improved to 22-0 against the Black Knights in a series that dates to 1927, when Babe Ruth led Murderers Row to West Point.

Before the game, the team took a tour of the campus, making stops at the Hall of Fame, Cadet Chapel, Michie Stadium, and Trophy Point before eating lunch in the mess hall.

General manager Brian Cashman said the roster was complete for Monday's home opener against the Boston Red Sox. He said he still had to make room for Lyle Overbay, and that had to be done by 3 p.m. EDT Sunday.

It was difficult to figure out who was more impressed - the Yankees or the Black Knights - on a picture-perfect day. An overflow crowd of over 6,000 attended.

The teams hadn't played since 1976.

Video: Joba Chamberlain signs autographs for Army cadets

Your browser does not support iframes.Army played host to the storied Yankees Saturday afternoon in what was essentially a final tuneup for New York before they open their regular season on Monday. All in all, it was a patriotic affair in West Point. The game combined America's national pastime and its bravest men and women, with arguably the greatest sports franchise in history. As you can see from the video above, Yankees right-hander Joba Chamberlain felt compelled to join some of the Cadets in the crowd in between the second and third innings, and even took time to sign some autographs and snap some candid photos.Well done, sir. On a side note, how awesome is that mustache Chamberlain is sporting these days?As for the game itself, the Bronx Bombers went on to double up the Black Knights, 10-5.New York plays host to bitter rival Boston at Yankee Stadium Monday afternoon for Opening Day. First pitch is slated for 1:05 p.m.Via MLB Cut 4

Navy player celebrates Army-Navy win with proposal

The emotions of the annual Army Navy Game may be unrivaled in the sport of college football when you take a hard look at it. Each year, as with most rivalries, a season can be defined by the outcome of just one game. For Army and Navy, that is the Army Navy Game. The thrill of victory has an exact opposite in the agony of defeat. Words cannot do justice to the emotions of Army quarterback Trent Steelman, who was focused from before the season ever started on bucking Army's ten-game losing streak to Navy. This was supposed to be the year for the Black Knights, and on Saturday it seemed as though fortune would be with Army in a hard-fought contest between the two service academies. But a botched hand-off to senior running back Larry Dixon resulted in a lost fumble as Army was poised to take a late lead on what would be the defining drive of Steelman's career. Instead it was Navy, once again, celebrating a victory after the final game of college football's regular season,...

Nike Unveils Army-Navy Bowl Uniforms

The newest bowl game uniforms were revealed by Nike today for the upcoming Army Navy Bowl. The Uni’s pay tribute to when the “Black Knights were unstoppable on all fields of battle: 1944, the year the Army troops won a key strategic victory in WWII’s Battle of the Bulge. The football team at home was on its way to a perfect season and the first of three consecutive national championships. In tribute to Army’s historic victory on the battlefield, a historical re-interpreted West Point battle atlas map of the region where the offensive took place can be seen throughout multiple elements of the uniform, from the jersey to base layer to gloves, all the way down to the inside the cleats.” The Navy garb “pays tribute to the traditional dress white uniform – a powerful symbol of professionalism, achievement and authority throughout the organization’s history. The uniform’s clean, white look with black details and gold trim, as well as a new number / letter font”

Army and Navy will wear specialty uniforms for Saturday's game

Whenever the debate about college football’s best rivalry comes up, fans are always quick to point out matchups like Ohio State-Michigan, Auburn-Alabama, South Carolina-Clemson and games like that.

However, in terms of sheer honor, tradition and history, nothing beats Army-Navy.

Of course for all that honor and tradition, there are certain things that have changed through the years, including the uniforms that both teams will wear when they take the field Saturday. Like so many other college football programs across the country, Army and Navy will have specially designed uniforms by Nike for their matchup at Lincoln Financial Field.

What may be even cooler though is the symbolism behind the uniforms.

Unlike the hideous, futuristic garb that some schools (cough...Maryland...cough) have worn in years past, the uniforms that Army and Navy will wear on Saturday have been designed to honor past service academy teams from the 1940’s and ‘50’s, at a time when both scho...

Army QB Steelman poised, pumped to play Navy

Army quarterback Trent Steelman was destined to be a star. His dad knew it nearly two decades ago.

A week after Trent started playing flag football, his coach took Bob Steelman aside at practice and made a heartfelt plea.

''He said, `I'm not going to say anything negative about your son, but you need to put him up with the older kids in tackle football because he's going to kill somebody out here,''' Bob Steelman recalled. ''So they threw him out of touch and put him in tackle as a 6-year-old.''

And so began a love affair with a game that means the world at West Point. Now a senior and facing the final game of his tenure - beating Navy on Saturday, something the Black Knights haven't done in a decade.

The two academies meet on Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

''It'd be the perfect ending,'' Steelman said, ''to a season where we've seen so many ups and downs.''

Army’s Nike Uniforms for Saturday’s Navy Game Look Incredible

This Saturday, Army and Navy will take the field for their 113th annual Army-Navy game and it looks like Army will have the better uniforms. Pictures of the uniforms were released today and a press release detailed the inspiration behind the new kits.
For the second straight season, Army will be wearing uniforms specially designed by Nike Football when it takes the field against arch-rival Navy on Saturday. This year’s uniform design pays tribute to the year 1944, which included the first of the Black Knights’ three straight national championships and the United States’ World War II victory at the Battle of the Bulge.
The Black Knights will sport black jerseys with black pants, gold shoes and gold helmets. A historical, re-interpreted West Point map of the battle is incorporated into several elements of the uniform, including the jersey numbers, gloves, helmet stripe and inside of the cleats. In addition, the helmet features a small black spade on the side in honor of the 101st Airb...

Vanderbilt apologizes to Army for postgame incident

Vanderbilt University apologized to the United States Military Academy for "oversight of your important protocol" after Saturday night's 44-21 victory over the Black Knights. After the game Vanderbilt officials blasted James Brown's "I feel good" over the loud speakers as the Cadets attempted to sing their alma mater.

This statement was posted on the athletic department websites of Vanderbilt and Army:

Oct. 25, 2011

To all of the men and women who attend and work at the United States Military Academy, their families, all graduates of USMA and their fans:

We at Vanderbilt University would like to publicly offer our sincere apology for the events that occurred at the conclusion of our recent football game. While our football team performed our alma mater with our fans and band, the Black Knights, their band and cheerleaders, as well as their fans, stood at attention and honored us as would a worthy foe. However, after we were finished and the Black Knights began to perform their
