UK Women Beat Navy In Tourney Opener

Score: No. 2 Kentucky 61, No. 15 Navy 41
Star(s): UK: DeNesha Stallworth 18 Pts, 11 Reb, 2 Ast, 3 Stl, 2 Blk. Navy: Jade Geif 9 Pts, 6 Reb, 2 Ast, 1 Blk.
Story: The Kentucky women’s basketball team won its opening NCAA Tournament game against the Navy Midshipmen.
The Wildcats came out slow after not playing an actual game in two weeks. Jennifer O’Neill, who normally sets the pace for Kentucky, was missing in action throughout the first half. UK trailed by one at halftime against a tough Navy team.
After a halftime pep talk from Coach Insell, O’Neill came out firing. She scored seven straight points in the first two minutes of the second half. Everything else would fall into place for the Cats, who took away the victory without backup center Samantha Drake.
Drake, who is a huge factor in UK’s five for five substitutions, was suspended indefinitely by Coach Mitchell. According to Mitchell, Drake has not been upholding the Kentucky basketball standard.
Kentucky will take on the win...

Draft Zone Spotlight: Keegan Wetzel, OLB, Navy

Draft Zone Spotlight: Keegan Wetzel, OLB, Navy
This 6’3 speed rusher, has great hands and great moves. Wetzel was a force for the Navy defense this year, and continues to improve year in and year out. Ever since Caleb Campbell really started paving the way for these military standouts more and more are making the attempt to go pro. Keegan Wetzel is no different; this kid can easily play at the next level. I believe he can set the edge as well as anyone in the 2013 NFL Draft. Keep an eye on this Naval Academy standout.
How many teams were recruiting you coming out of high school and how did you make your decision?
Had offers from all Ivy Leagues and Service Academy teams as well as local 1AA schools in Illinois; based my decision on the opportunity to play D-1A as opposed to D-1AA as well as the educational and leadership opportunities of a Service Academy.
Has it always been your dream to be an NFL football player?
Yes
Who was your favorite team and player growing up?

Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl Primer: Arizona St vs Navy

Who: Arizona State Sun Devils (7-5) vs Navy Midshipmen (8-4)

	Where: San Fran

When: Saturday, December 29th, 4 PM EST

	TV: ESPN 2

	Line: Arizona State by 14

Navy comes into this game having beaten three bowl teams (ECU, CMU and Air Force) and Arizona State comes in having beaten just one (Arizona). The Sun Devils went just 1-4 this year against teams that would end up in bowls.

The key match-up in this game is the Arizona State run defense (which came in 10th in the Pac-12) against the Navy offense (6th in the Nation in rushing). There is no comparable team on the Sun Devils schedule but the Arizona State rushing defense did give it up early and often in many games this season. One positive you can take is that the Sun Devils actually won two games in which they allowed more than 230 yards rushing (Arizona and Illinois).

The point spread in this one might be a little rich but I do think that the Sun Devils just have a bit too much talent for Navy to handl...

Tilman Dunbar produced a double-double with 13 points and 10 assists and Kendall Knorr had 15 points as Navy beat Bryant 69-59 Monday night in a nonconference contest.

Knorr was 7 of 8 from the foul line for the Midshipmen (6-6), with all of his attempts coming in the final 40 seconds to ensure victory.

The Bulldogs (5-4) were led by Joe O'Shea's 15 points and Vlad Kondratyev's 11 points and nine rebounds.

Dyami Starks, who entered as Bryant's leading scorer with 18.3 points per game, was limited to eight points and shot 1 of 9 from 3-point range. He hit six 3-pointers in the team's game against Binghamton Saturday and entered averaging a Northeast Conference-best 3.25 treys per game.

The teams were tied 53-all with under 6 minutes left when Dunbar hit a layup to spark a 9-2 run before Knorr iced the game with his free throws.

Navy player celebrates Army-Navy win with proposal

The emotions of the annual Army Navy Game may be unrivaled in the sport of college football when you take a hard look at it. Each year, as with most rivalries, a season can be defined by the outcome of just one game. For Army and Navy, that is the Army Navy Game. The thrill of victory has an exact opposite in the agony of defeat. Words cannot do justice to the emotions of Army quarterback Trent Steelman, who was focused from before the season ever started on bucking Army's ten-game losing streak to Navy. This was supposed to be the year for the Black Knights, and on Saturday it seemed as though fortune would be with Army in a hard-fought contest between the two service academies. But a botched hand-off to senior running back Larry Dixon resulted in a lost fumble as Army was poised to take a late lead on what would be the defining drive of Steelman's career. Instead it was Navy, once again, celebrating a victory after the final game of college football's regular season,...

Navy remains committed to an unsettled Big East

Navy is still on board for Big East football in 2015.

The Midshipmen remain committed to joining the unsettled conference for football only, starting in 2015. Navy has been playing football since 1879 without conference affiliation until it made the decision last year to join a Big East - a league that has undergone a massive facelift in 15 months.

''Right now, nothing's changed in terms of our attitude or ambition in terms of joining in `15,'' Athletic Director Chet Gladchuk said Wednesday. ''We're just going to see how it all unfolds.''

Gladchuk was in Philadelphia to promote the 113th Army-Navy game on Dec. 8 at Lincoln Financial Field. The U.S. Naval Academy agreed last year to give up more than 130 years of football independence to join a conference that is in the middle of a massive overhaul. Louisville on Wednesday became the fourth school in 15 months and seventh in the past decade to leave the Big East for the ACC. The Big East also lost Rutgers last week. T

Noah Copeland ran for 110 yards and two touchdowns, leading Navy to a 21-10 victory over Texas State on Saturday.

Copeland scored on runs of 15 and 16 yards as the Midshipmen (7-4) won for the sixth time in seven games.

Shaun Rutherford threw a touchdown pass to Isaiah Battle for the Bobcats (3-7), who dropped their fourth consecutive game.

A week after yielding 487 offensive yards in a 41-31 loss at Troy, the Mids' defense surrendered 405 yards but did not allow a touchdown until the fourth quarter.

It was Navy's final game before its Dec. 8 battle against Army in Philadelphia, where the winner will claim the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy for football supremacy among U.S. service academies.

Gee Gee Greene also ran for a TD for Navy, which amassed 407 yards on the ground.

Rutherford completed 25 of 40 passes for 290 yards, but was victimized by a handful of drops.

Freshman QB leads Navy win

Keenan Reynolds threw three touchdown passes to lead Navy to its second straight victory, 31-13, over Central Michigan Friday night.

Reynolds, a freshman who filled in for injured starter Trey Miller and rallied Navy to an overtime victory last week at Air Force, was six of 11 for 139 yards and also ran for 59 yards for the Midshipmen (3-3).

Making his first career start, Reynolds became the first Navy quarterback to throw three touchdown passes since Chris McCoy against Colgate in 1997.

Navy kept the ball on the ground for most of its first two drives, with Reynolds ending each with scoring passes. He found a wide-open Brandon Turner for a 23-yard strike, and hit Gee Gee Greene with a 19-yarder on an almost identical play later in the first quarter. Reynolds teamed with Greene again on a 41-yard scoring pass in the third quarter.

The Midshipmen outgained the Chippewas (2-4) 238-70 on the ground. Noah Copeland ran for 70 yards on 15 carries, and Prentice Christian finished with 64 yards on 13 tries.

Central Michigan cut it to 17-10 in the final minute of the first half on Ryan Radcliff's 29-yard touchdown pass to Titus Davis. The Chippewas closed the gap with a field goal early in the second half, but never threatened the rest of the night. Christian answered with his touchdown and, after the Chippewas were forced to punt from their own end zone, Greene effectively ended the game with his second touchdown catch.

Radcliff was 11 of 19 for 139 yards and a touchdown before being pulled early in the fourth quarter. Davis caught two passes for 48 yards, including his 13th touchdown catch in 18 career games.

The loss was the third straight for the Chippewas. They are 0-3 against Navy.

VMI can't build on fine start in 41-3 loss to Navy

It all started so well for Virginia Military Institute.

The ending, however, was all too familiar.

VMI forced a turnover on Navy's opening series, then moved deftly the other way for a field goal and a 3-0 lead. Those were the highlights for the Keydets, who never scored again in a 41-3 loss Saturday.

VMI fell to 0-9 against the Midshipmen in a lopsided rivalry that began in 1898.

''We played hard, but we just didn't take advantage of the opportunities given us,'' VMI coach Sparky Woods said. ''As the game went on, their offense did what we wanted to stop them from doing. They turned two- to three-yard gains into eight-to-10-yard gains. Plus, we were just not good at sustaining a drive on our offensive end.''

VMI (1-3) has been outscored 88-9 over the last two weeks in losses to Richmond and Navy.

Keydets quarterback Eric Korndenbrock hurt his back while being tackled in the first quarter and did not return until VMI's second series after halftime.

Navy QB Kriss Proctor leads team to victory without completing a pass

Navy QB Kriss Proctor led the Midshipmen to a 24-17 victory over SMU today despite zero passing yards. In fact, Proctor only threw the ball twice, both being incomplete (he did have one complete pass, but it was to the other team). “I love it,” Proctor joked. “I didn’t complete a pass. I threw a pick. I guess that counts as a completion.” Where Proctor failed in the aerial attack, he more than made up in the ground game. The senior quarterback was the top team rusher amassing 107 yards in 17 attempts. The team combined for 335 total rushing yards in what was a must win game for Navy. Navy fans shouldn’t be too shocked as it was only a few years ago (2008) that Navy beat SMU without completing a pass. This dramatic win puts Navy (4-6) in a position to become bowl eligible. If Navy can close the season with a win against San Jose State and Army, Navy can punch their ticket to the Military Bowl.
