Akron CB arrested in robbery case

Seth Cunningham, a senior cornerback at the University of Akron, was arrested this week and charged with stealing a bong at gunpoint.

Cops say Cunningham entered a 24-hour tobacco pipe shop in Brunswick, Ohio, and swiped a $447 bong while waving a 9mm pistol. Officers spotted his truck and found Cunningham inside along with the pistol and bong, and he confessed, according to the police report in the Medina-Gazette.

Cunningham was released on a $30,000 bond and suspended by the team. The 21-year-old had nine tackles in nine games last year.

Akron CB Seth Cunningham accused of stealing bong in armed robbery

Akron senior cornerback Seth Cunningham was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly robbing a tobacco pipe store at gunpoint, The Medina-Gazette reports. According to The Gazette, Brunswick police say Cunningham entered a 24-hour tobacco pipe store and waved a 9mm handgun in the air. He allegedly went to a display case and stole a water pipe (aka bong) valued at $447 and fled the store. Police later spotted Cunningham in his truck sitting in the driveway of a home. They found Cunningham with the pipe and pistol. Fox 8 in Cleveland says he admitted to the robbery. Cunningham was taken to the Medina County Jail. He posted a $30,000 bond on Wednesday and was released. Fox 8 says Cunningham has been suspended indefinitely pending the outcome of the case. So, I gotta ask, how do you think this whole thing went down? I’m guessing this guy was blazing late at night with the bros at the crib and talking about that awesome bong they always see at the store. He probably decided, “screw it, what’s...

The MAC Preview: Ranking the Strength of Schedules

The Mid-American Conference has captured the hearts of the college football Twitterati over the last few years with their willingness to play, seemingly, on any day of the week that ends in the letter “Y.”

For those who cannot get enough college football, a Tuesday night game between Toledo and Northern Illinois in November is like manna from heaven. It’s been a smart move for the conference, elevating the MAC’s visibility during the end of the season.

Having some wild shootouts on the field during those spotlight games hasn’t hurt either.

With the recent decision by the Big Ten to stop scheduling FCS schools, the MAC is viewed as one of the likely beneficiaries of that change in philosophy. This means that the MAC will probably play more games against the Big Ten schools, although they do play their fair share against their “big brothers” already.

But those FCS teams will still need opponents and paydays. The MAC is ready to fill that gap as well. This year, 12 of the 13 MA...

Akron powerless to stop VCU

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - Diving into the history of terrible endings to otherwise outstanding seasons would simply be dancing around the obvious.

Akron showed up to the NCAA tournament Thursday night and got flattened. The No. 12 seed Zips had a terrible matchup against No. 5 VCU and played terribly. Playing without suspended point guard Alex Abreu was a recipe for disaster for Akron against VCU's full-court pressure defense, and the final score of 88-42 certainly qualifies as disaster.

The Zips had more problems than just the matchups, the strategy and the kind of fast-paced start to the game on which VCU thrives. VCU kept getting easy shots and kept making them, and the whole thing snowballed into the Zips' 26-win season coming to a screeching halt and the aforementioned wrong kind of history.

For a little more than hour, it stood as the largest margin of defeat in an NCAA tournament game for a team that wasn't a No. 15 or 16 seed. Syracuse's 81-34 rout of Montana in San Jose that started a

Akron survives to MAC championship

Akron's dreams of a memorable March were in danger of ending in the worst way possible.

Zeke Marshall rescued them.

Dominating at both ends, the Zips' 7-foot-center scored 18 points with 10 rebounds and seven blocks as Akron, rocked last week by the suspension of point guard Alex Abreu, kept its NCAA tournament hopes alive by beating rival Kent State 62-59 on Friday night in the Mid-American Conference semifinals.

Playing just their second game without Abreu, who was arrested last week on drug trafficking charges, the Zips (25-6) overcame atrocious foul shooting (13 of 29) to make the MAC final for the seventh straight year.

Marshall and the Zips wouldn't be denied.

''I've never seen anything like what our guys did,'' said Akron coach Keith Dambrot. ''We were emotionally ruptured last week. I've never seen anything like what Zeke Marshall did. That was the most unbelievable performance. I've never seen anything like that in my life.''

Akron guard Alex Abreu arrested on felony drug charge

The Akron Zips are one of those mid-major teams that everyone believes can make a lot of noise in a couple of weeks when the NCAA Tournament begins, but it appears as if they are going to be doing it without their star guard, Alex Abreu, as he is was arrested on Thursday for multiple felony charges. According to the Akron Beacon-Journal, the All-MAC junior was arrested by undercover police when he accepted a large shipment of marijuana: Police said Abreu and another Akron man were being held in the Summit County Jail on marijuana-trafficking charges. One count is a third-degree felony; the other is a felony drug-abuse charge, court records show. The timing of the arrest couldn’t be worse for the Zips, as they currently stand 24-5 atop of the MAC standings heading into their regular season game. The team has already released a statement athat Abreu has been suspended indefinitely. This could damage their chances of reaching the tournament at this point.
On Thursday, the Akron Zips basketball team received some shocking and sad news that their basketball star Alex Abreu has been suspended indefinitely after being arrested on drug-trafficking charges.According to a report, Abreu, 21, and Austin L. Durgala, 18, were caught and arrested for trafficking marijuana and possession of marijuana. The two were charged after detectives seized over five pounds of marijuana at Durgala's residents.
Akron G pleads not guilty to charges

Akron's special season has hit a stunning snag.

Zips starting point guard Alex Abreu pleaded not guilty to trafficking and possession of marijuana on Friday, hours before his teammates played rival Kent State in their regular-season finale - on senior night - without the junior floor general and inspirational leader. Abreu has been suspended indefinitely, pending the outcome of the police investigation.

Abreu appeared via closed-circuit TV from jail in Akron Municipal Court. On Thursday, the 21-year-old and Austin L. Durgala, 18, were arrested by police for allegedly accepting a package containing 5 pounds of marijuana. According to police, narcotic-unit detectives arrested Abreu and Durgala at the latter's residence.

Abreu's bond was set at $5,000. He is due back in court March 22, when the Zips hope to be playing in the NCAA tournament.

But without Abreu, Akron's run to make the NCAA field for the third time since 2009 will be much more challenging.

Although the Zips (24-5, 14-1) recent

Akron suspends Abreu following arrest

Akron point guard Alex Abreu was suspended Thursday after he was arrested and charged with possession and trafficking of marijuana.

A team spokesman said the indefinite suspension is pending the outcome of a police investigation. In an emailed statement, the spokesman said the university is gathering information and questions about the investigation should be directed to the Akron Police Department.

With Abreu directing the offense, the Zips (24-5, 14-1) put together a 19-game winning streak on its way to its second consecutive Mid-American Conference title. The 5-foot-10 junior is averaging 10.3 points and six assists per game, second in the league behind Ohio's D.J. Cooper.

Abreu had one of his best performances in one of Akron's biggest games of the season, finishing with 21 points and nine assists in an 86-72 victory over Ohio on Feb. 2. The Zips host Kent State on Friday night in their final regular-season game.

The 21-year-old Abreu was being held at the Summit County Jail. Each of the two c

Akron Guard Alex Abreu Arrested on Drug Trafficking Charges

I guess Abreu was more interested in being the next Rick Ross (the drug dealer not the rapper), than the March Madness. He will be spending the rest of March trying to figure out how to stay out of jail.
Deadspin has the details.
The Akron Zips will be without the services of starting point guard Alex Abreu after the All-MAC junior found himself in jail today facing multiple felony charges.
The Akron Beacon-Journal reports Abreu was arrested today after accepting a “large” shipment of marijuana from undercover officers who detected the package using drug dogs.
A search of the Akron Municipal Court records shows Abreu was charged today with two third-degree felonies of drug trafficking and drug abuse. In Ohio, third-degree marijuana trafficking is charged when the amount in question is between one and five kilograms. The third-degree felony charge of aggravated possession includes “a presumption for a prison term.”
Abreu has been suspended for the 24-5 Akron Zips.

University of Akron point guard Alex Abreu has been suspended indefinitely after his arrest on marijuana trafficking charges Thursday afternoon.

Narcotics officers made the arrest late Thursday afternoon after intercepting a delivery intended for Abreu.

The Akron Beacon Journal reported that Abreu remains in Summit County Jail. A University of Akron statement said Abreu's suspension is pending the outcome of charges and that the university is gathering more information.

Akron has won 19 of its last 20 games and clinched its second straight Mid-American Conference championship earlier this week. A junior from Puerto Rico, Abreu is a three-year starter and is averaging career-bests of 10.3 points and 6 assists per game this season.

Zips flex muscle, extend streak

AKRON, Ohio - Different opponent, different stage, same result for Akron.

With a little splash, too.

The Zips extended the nation's longest win streak to 18 games Friday night, turning a BracketBusters showcase game into the kind of interior-oriented game in which they thrive and pulling away to beat North Dakota State, 68-53.

Akron likes to play fast and cares little about playing pretty, and that formula led to North Dakota State never really having a chance to find a consistent flow. Akron's athletic front line simply took over Friday night, with 7-footer Zeke Marshall leading the way in the scoring column and 6-foot-7 bully Demetrius Treadwell providing a complement.

Treadwell had 11 points and 14 rebounds. Marshall scored 14 points and had 8 rebounds, and Nick Harney had 13 points and 5 rebounds. The Zips scored 34 points in the paint, had 15 second-chance points and owned a 43-36 advantage in rebounds.

If you're going to end this Akron streak, muscle up.

AKRON, Ohio - It's a unique promotional giveaway, one designed to get people talking and get them out to Saturday night's University of Akron basketball game vs. Buffalo.
If it gets a few people -- or even a few thousand -- angry, then that's part of the deal. And the very essence of the word promotion.
LeBron James Bobblehead Night at Akron is a potential lightning rod not just because James himself is, but because the three-time NBA MVP never actually attended or played for Akron. He grew up in the city, played dozens of high school games at Akron's James A. Rhodes Arena and through his longtime relationship with Zips coach Keith Dambrot remains both a public and private supporter of the program.
If so many people in Northeast Ohio didn't see James as the enemy, the fit would be natural.
After seven seasons and two of those MVP awards with the Cleveland Cavaliers, James chose live national television to announce he was leaving for the Miami Heat via free agency in 2010. The breakup was

UCF Knights ran over the Akron Zips 56-14

The UCF Knights (1-0), led by their running game, played spoiler to the debut of new Akron head coach Terry Bowden by forcing 4 turnovers and finished 56-14 over the Akron Zips(0-1) on Thursday night.
UCF took the opening drive 73 yards and Sophomore QB Blake Bortles (13/16, 168, 3, 1) found newly converted TE Chris Martin (starting LT last year) on a 5 yard TD. Senior RB Latavius Murray (14 carries, 108 yds, 1TD) had 68 of the 73 yards on the ground, including a 43 yarder. Murray did not play after the 2nd quarter due to a sore shoulder.
RB Storm Johnson’s, transfer from Miami, debut started off shaky — or should I say slippery — as he slipped on 2 of his first 3 carries. The sophomore finished with 12 carries for 34 yards and 2 TD for the Knights.

Akron Zips football poster: Try not to vomit

As an Ohio-based blog, we felt a certain obligation to post the Akron Zips 2012 football poster.Apparently when you hire a new coach, especially one with the Bowden name, you have no choice but to plaster his face on all of your promotional materials. However, as a marketing executive I have always made it a point to include people with a certain look to help sell a program and concept. I'm sorry to say, Terry Bowden does not have that look. A colleague of mine over at Crystal Ball Run had the funniest comment about the poster. Allen Kenney from BlatantHomerism.com said, "I believe he's pointing at the booster's daughter he'd like to screw."Well played.

Dead Body Found in Akron Zips Stadium, But They Played Anyway

Nothing like starting off your morning getting ready for the big game by hearing a body was found in the stadium.
Here are the details.
A dead body was found inside InfoCision Stadium, the home field of the University of Akron Zips, according to reports on Saturday morning.
According to WKYC’s report, police found a suicide note at the man’s home and began searching for him Friday night when they found his car outside of the stadium. The man was found dead inside the stadium, reportedly in the stands, sometime Saturday morning.
According to Mocking the Draft, Police haven’t spoken to the media because they are trying to contact the family of the person involved in the death at Infocision Stadium.
Sad story especially for the family of the dead man. They didn’t release where he was found in the stadium, but someone right now is probably sitting in that seat and has no clue what happened just a few hours ago.
Spooky.
