The MAC Preview: Preseason All-Conference teams

(Photo Courtesy: USA Today Sports Images)

In every way, shape and form, #MACtion (as both a noun and a verb) is alive and well. Just looking over rosters this spring, it’s simply incredible how much talent returns to this conference in 2013. In specific these offenses (not surprisingly) are stacked; the MAC returns seven wideouts who had at least 800 yards last year, and a staggering seven running backs who rushed for 1,000 yards last season.

Yes, you read that correctly: There are seven RETURNING running backs who rushed for over 1,000 yards last year.

That number is incredible for two reasons:

	1. There were only 61 backs who rushed for over 1,000 yards last year in ALL of college football.

	2. That number 61 includes many who have since taken their talents to the NFL.

Again, it’s safe to say that #MACtion is alive. It is also definitely well.

That also makes the task of putting together a preseason All-Conference team in this league quite challenging. In some ...

Bucs' Means finding motivation from being overlooked

TAMPA, Fla. Over the past week, Steven Means has felt elation from a phone call he dreamed about since age 5, flew from his native western New York to Florida as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers fifth-round pick (147th overall) and joked that hell do anything including snap the ball to become an asset to coach Greg Schiano and general manager Mark Dominik. All this came after a common reaction to his selection: Who is this guy?Its a fair question, one that Dominik addressed last Saturday, unsolicited, when he said, He might be a little bit off your radar, but he wasnt off of ours. Means, a 6-foot-4, 250-pound Buffalo product whom the Bucs envision as a developing pass rusher at defensive end, could become a diamond-in-the-rough pick if their vision develops according to plan. Means, who had 185 tackles and 18.5 sacks in college, was never invited to the NFL Combine. If anything, Khalil Mack, a junior and an All-Mid-American Conference linebacker, overshadowed him on the Bulls defense.

Blue Team Victorious at Buffalo Spring Game

Buffalo, NY - The spring game for college football teams are supposed to be played in warmer weather. Hence the “spring” name in front.
Many players probably thought it was the winter game after the conditions they faced Saturday afternoon. With snow flurries and temperatures in the mid 30′s, the Bulls still showed signs of progress as the Blue team took down the White team Saturday afternoon 17-3.
“I think we have more guys providing leadership both on and off the field. I really like where we are with our senior class,” said head coach Jeff Quinn. “There is a lot more continuity and consistency. Everyone knows their role. They are being very responsible with how they go about their business. There is one thing in common all great teams and all great players have and that is that they are never satisfied. We are not satisfied at this point. We need to be out there ready to play.”
The game was played differently than in years past as this game pitted two teams, blue versus white, ...

Quinn Stresses Leadership at Scrimmage (Video)

Jeff Quinn was given a contract extension this off-season (photo Buffalo.com)
Buffalo, NY - There is still over four months until the college football season begins but UB held their first spring scrimmage Saturday at UB Stadium.
The scrimmage started at 10:15 am and lasted about two hours. During the action, talents of players such as Branden Oliver and Joe Licata were on display.
“I really like our leadership and certainly today we got a chance to really put them in as many game-like situations, live special-teams, offense, defense, tackling for the first time,” said head coach Jeff Quinn. ”I really liked where we were in terms of our efficiency.”
The Bulls finished with a 4-8 record last season but won three of their final four games to grab some momentum into this year. Licata was inserted into the starting quarterback role mid-season, replacing Alex Zordich and showed signs of light in a UB offense that looks to be vital to the team’s success.

Buffalo hires Bobby Hurley as men's basketball coach

It looks like New Jersey's own, Bobby Hurley, is headed to upstate New York to take over the men's basketball program at Buffalo. A press conference late Tuesday announced Hurley's first head coaching job would be at the university, after three seasons as an assistant at Wagner, then Rhode Island for his brother Dan, according to ESPN.

Hurley will replace Reggie Witherspoon, who was 198-228 during 14 years at the school. The Bulls finished 14-20 overall, 7-9 in the Mid-American Conference.

This might be a good hire for the middle-of-the-pack Bulls. Hurley, the son of legendary St. Anthony's (Jersey City) High School coach Bob, Sr., brings a solid background as a player at Duke — something his two national titles will attest to. Even though his glory days were two decades ago, Hurley's Coach K pedigree and the former All-American's name recognition should be enough to lure top prospects to the Buffalo campus.

The Bulls have had a decent amount of success recently, bu

Will Regan easily had the best game of his college career, scoring 36 points as he helped the University at Buffalo win their second consecutive MAC Tournament contest Wednesday night in a 76-61 victory over Ball State to advance to Thursday night’s quarterfinals against Kent State.
The sophomore forward went 11-17 from the field and was perfect from the charity stripe as he helped turn a 6-point halftime deficit into a 15-point win for the Bulls.
Buffalo initially struggled out of the gate, trailing Ball State 36-30 at the half as 2nd Team All-MAC performer Jauwan Scaife had his Cardinals off to a strong start, scoring 17-points in the first half.
One area the Bulls struggled with early on was rebounding.
“I thought Ball State came out and attacked us really hard in the first half on the glass. We had to really talk about that at halftime and be more determined to do a better job in that area,” head c...

Javon McCrea scored six of his 21 points in overtime as Buffalo defeated Central Michigan 75-72 Monday night in the opening round of the Mid-American Conference tournament.

McCrea went 8-of-10 shooting to go with eight rebounds, four blocks and three steals. Will Regan added 15 points, Tony Watson 14 and Raphell Thomas-Edwards came off the bench to score 10 for the eighth-seeded Bulls, who snapped a two-game losing streak.

The game saw 18 lead changes in regulation before Kyle Randall's 3-pointer drew it to 67-all with 21 seconds left - the 11th tie of the night.

Randall, who led ninth-seeded Central Michigan with 31 points, missed two straight layups and had a third blocked as part of a 0-for-5 overtime-opening shooting performance. McCrea, meanwhile, followed a jumper with a dunk to give Buffalo the lead for good.

Central Michigan made just 1 of 9 shots in overtime.

Draft Zone Spotlight: Steven Means, University of Buffalo
Steven Means stands at 6’3 3/8 and weighs in at 255 pounds. He is one of the Bulls best pass rushers and is a solid player. Being from Upstate New York, I was impressed with the Bulls defense this year, with both Mean and Khalil Mack who were amazing off the edge. This edge rusher possesses freak athletic abilities and I enjoyed watching #40. He earned All-Mac honors this year as well. I remember watching Steven at Grover Cleveland High School and since the Bulls are my favorite college football team it was an honor doing this interview with Steven. I hope you enjoy it football fans.
How many teams were recruiting you coming out of high school and how did you make your decision?
There were about 12 different schools that recruited me. I made my decision based on the persistence that Buffalo showed and the close proximity from home.
Who was your favorite NFL team growing up, and did you have a player you rooted for?

Javon McCrea recorded a double-double, Buffalo shot nearly 56 percent from the field and survived turning the ball over 17 times in a 72-52 victory for the Bulls on Wednesday night over Milwaukee.

McCrea led Buffalo (3-7) with a game-high 31 points on 15-of-19 shooting and pulled 11 rebounds. The Bulls were 33 of 59 from the field, shooting at a 55.9 percent clip and the defense held Milwaukee to just 34.5 percent shooting.

Auraum Nuiriankh chipped in with his own double-double for Buffalo, scoring 13 points and grabbing 15 rebounds.

The Bulls built a strong lead out of the gates after Jarryn Skeete hit a 3-pointer to make it 9-0 and it wasn't until the 14:46 mark in the first half when Milwaukee finally scored its first bucket of the night on a jumper by Parris Gulley.

Jordan Aaron scored 23 points in the loss for Milwaukee (2-6).

Buffalo completes Hail Mary before halftime

While spending my Wednesday night watching MAC football (that is right I spend my Wednesdays watching Mid-American Conference football), I happened to catch an amazing Hail Mary pass by the Buffalo Bulls right before half. Rarely do Hail Mary plays work, so when they do it is something every one should watch. Even if it is the Buffalo against Kent State, a Hail Mary is still an amazing play to watch. With just enough time to throw up one last pass Buffalo’s quarterback Alex Zordich connected with wide receiver Alex Neutz for a touchdown. While it is not nearly as impressive as the Michigan State vs Wisconsin Hail Mary from last year, it is still a great play. Prior to the Hail Mary, Buffalo had shut down Kent State in the red zone and sacked them for a loss before they missed a field goal. After moving down the field, Buffalo had one last chance. One last chance, that worked to perfection.

University at Buffalo star LB Mack suspended

University at Buffalo star linebacker Khalil Mack has been suspended indefinitely for violating an unspecified team policy.

Mack's suspension began Saturday, when he missed a team scrimmage.

The junior is coming off a season in which he led the Bulls with 5 1/2 sacks, 20 1/2 tackles for a loss and five forced fumbles to earn first-team Mid-American Conference honors.

Last month, Mack was one of 84 players picked for the Bronco Nagurski Trophy watch list. The honor is given to the nation's top defensive player.

UB Bulls quarterback Joe Licata hopes to hear his named called by Jeff Quinn on September 1st when the Bulls take on Georgia.
The start of the regular season is only 20 days away for the UB Bulls and the team has yet to decide who their starting quarterback will be.
After 5 days of practice, both Alex Zordich and Joe Licata have gone all out hoping that they will eventually get the call from Coach Quinn.
With the Bulls first team scrimmage only one day away, I went to Bulls practice to see where both quarterback’s minds were at.
