EMU coach to skydive for bathrooms

The Eastern Michigan Eagles need new bathrooms, and coach Ron English is ready to jump out of a plane to get them.

English has pledged to skydive if EMU can raise at least $60,000 through its golf outing June 8 and other donations. Those who donate $5,000 will get to spend a day with English and staff members and skydive with him.

That money will go toward retiling the bathrooms in the team's locker room and updating the fixtures and stalls.

Yes, it's a long way from Michigan, where English used to be defensive coordinator, to Eastern Michigan, no matter what the map says.

''Obviously at Michigan you're not hurting for money when you're getting 100,000 in the stands on Saturdays,'' said English, who worked about 10 miles up the road in Ann Arbor from 2003-2007.

''In the Mid-American Conference, because of our following, the size of our stadiums and TV contracts, you have to be creative in terms of finding ways to raise money to help fund your programs.''

Eastern Michigan basketball player suspended for assault charge

Eastern Michigan basketball player Glenn Bryant has been suspended indefinitely by the school after his 19-year-old girlfriend said he choked her during an argument at an off-campus apartment.

Glenn Bryant was arraigned Wednesday in Ypsilanti District Court on assault by strangulation and aggravated domestic violence charges.

The 22-year-old from Detroit was arrested Monday.

Interim Athletic Director Melody Reifel Werner says in a statement that Bryant's suspension under the school's student-athlete discipline policy will continue "until the charges are dropped, dismissed or otherwise resolved."

Bryant was a transfer from Arkansas and averaged around 10 points after sitting out the 2011-2012 season.

PN Interview: Catching Prospect Matt Hitt

Matt Hitt
On March 8, the Phillies signed Matt Hitt, a 23-year old catcher who led Eastern Michigan University in home runs in 2012. Hitt went undrafted but played professionally with the Arizona Centennials last summer. Hitt comes to the Phillies organization with a reputation for plus defense and the ability to hit for power.
Signed on March 8, Hitt will likely play along side catchers Cameron Rupp, Justin Dalles, and Gabriel Lino in the Phils Minor League ranks, helping to develop some of the fantastic young pitchers. Matt took some time out of his schedule to answer some questions for Phillies Nation.
Q1: Baseball America reported your signing with Spring Training already underway. What was it like to get a call from the Phillies with camp just about starting and did you know that they were interested at all before they called? Had you made any plans or were you working anywhere else before they or any other team called?
MH: What can I say, but that it was the best day of my li...

Exclusive Interview: Eastern Michigan DE Andy Mulumba

Andy Mulumba of Eastern Michigan is an intriguing MAC product. A 6’4 260+ pound physical marvel that displays a knack for getting around the tackle, Mulumba notched 73 tackles and 7 tackles for loss. Although the Eagles struggled through a tough season, the Quebec, Canada-native Mulumba still had a fine year and is one of the more athletic defensive ends you can bring into a camp. It was my pleasure to interview Andy for NFL Draft Zone.
Shaun DePasquale: Thank you for taking the time to speak with me today Andy. Can you tell me where you’re training for the NFL Draft?
Andy Mulumba: I am training with Jim Kielbaso at Total performance in Wixom, Michigan
SD: What do you feel are your strengths and things you may need to work on?
AM: I am a very versatile player, and my strengths are mostly in playing the run and understanding defensive coverages. The one thing I need to work on is consistently put pressure on the quarterback by coming around the edge.

Jalen Ross scored 13 points to lead Eastern Michigan to a 58-52 victory over Central Michigan Tuesday night.

Jamell Harris had 11 points and six rebounds and Glenn Bryant had 10 points and five blocked shots for the Eagles (8-9, 1-2 Mid-American), who ended a four-game losing streak.

Eastern Michigan shot 58 percent in the first half in building a 30-19 lead. The Eagles maintained a double-digit lead most of the second half, mostly at the free-throw line where they were 17 of 30 after the break.
Legal proceedings keep Still off basketball court

Eastern Michigan has benched junior forward James Still until an assault case against him is resolved in court.

The school said Friday that Still is not being allowed to play.

Still was a freshman at Providence in April 2010 when he and teammate Johnnie Lacy were charged with assault following an attack on another student. Both were suspended.

Eastern Michigan says Still pleaded guilty Tuesday and sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 8, 2013.

Eastern Michigan says it was aware of the criminal matter when the school admitted Still this fall. The school says it received ''numerous positive recommendations'' and that Still, of Detroit, had earned an associate's degree from Henry Ford Community College in Dearborn.

If you were watching the Thursday night matchup between Ohio University and Eastern Michigan University you must’ve been really bored or went to one of those schools. For the rest of America, you missed this amazing decleating hit by Ohio’s Tyler Futrell…I think. (OU’s official roster has 2 players with the #81). Are you ready for it? and BOOM! goes the dynamite.
MSU Vs. Eastern Michigan Recap

On Saturday, Michigan State defeated Eastern Michigan 23-7 in a game in which Andrew Maxwell, Le’Veon Bell and the MSU offense couldn’t string together at touchdown drive until the 4th quarter.
So, why did the Spartans beat the Eastern Michigan Eagles?
Le’Veon Bell powered through for 36 carries, 253 yards and 1 TD. Eastern Michigan has an awful rush defense, but everyone knew that the Eagles were preparing for Le’Veon Bell all week long. It didn’t even matter. From his first rush, a 4-yard gain, to his last rush, a 40-yard gain, Le’Veon Bell tore it up the entire game. Whenever the Spartans were in a tough position, they gave the ball to Bell and all of the problems disappeared.
Hey look, Bell had a great run?
Dion Sims was a savior. The Spartans (once again) had issues passing the ball, and Sims was Maxwell’s best friend (forever? Probably not), racking up 6 receptions for 112 yards and a TD. He was great to watch.
The Michigan State defense was once again on point, as the only to...

Eastern Michigan thumbs nose at NCAA?

A friend of mine pinged me on twitter with this story and I was busy this weekend with other things and I wonder if this is push back by Eastern Michigan University against the NCAA. You have to wonder if EMU is basically saying we don’t care what kind of repercussions will come from the NCAA for violating their policy on nicknames and logos that the NCAA deems hostile and abusive and their ban on Native American imagery at NCAA championship events.

The Ypsilanti school will still be the Eagles - the nickname and mascot it adopted in 1991 when ditched the Hurons nickname. But EMU added its Hurons and Normalites logos to the uniforms band members will be sporting for Saturday's game against Illinois State, in the hopes that doing so will foster greater unity among its current and former students, including some who never got over the 1991 change.

Eastern Michigan gets new snazzy Adidas football uniforms for 2012

Eastern Michigan’s football program has a new tagline: Eastern Michigan University, the Oregon of the midwest. Somehow some way, someone at Adidas thought it would be a nifty idea to spruce up Ypsilanti, Michigan this fall. The results: the EMU Eagles will have the opportunity to sport 12 different uniforms for the upcoming 2012 season.A habitual Mid-American Conference doormat, potential recruits actually have a reason to consider committing to a program that has won five football games (or more) once since 1995 – last year when they finished 6-6. Since ’95, EMU has had one winless season (2009), one one-win season, two two-win seasons and 11 seasons in which they won three or four games. However, fourth-year coach Ron English may have the program on an upswing. His three seasons have seen the team improve from 0-12 to 2-10 to 6-6. These new unis might bring better players which might bring a bigger improvement curve.I love the new matte helmets. It’s definitely becoming a c...

Eastern Michigan getting in on he new uniform MACtion

Eastern Michigan Eagles introducing a gray and white helmet
Via Twitter.
It is not abnormal for a recruit or incoming player to break news of a new football uniform for a program. Schools are always showing off upcoming uniforms to recruits because kids are so easily swayed in to a decision based on uniforms. Hey, if it works for Oregon, why can’t it work for Eastern Michigan (OK, scratch that).
That is exactly how we all came to know about Eastern Michigan’s new helmet and look. Incoming freshman linebacker Hunter Matt tweeted a photo (he thinks they are “dirty as [EXPLETIVE DELETED]“)on a January visit to the campus, and more recently Eastern Michigan released official information about the uniform on their athletics website.
The 2012 Eastern Michigan Football team will feature new state of the art football Techfit uniforms. These uniforms are seamless and 30 percent lighter than the normal stretch mesh jerseys. Adidas outfits the Eagles with top of the lin...
