New KSU baseball team writing own chapter

NILES, Ohio - Just when most of us in Ohio had forgot it existed, the sun started coming out recently, at least for a few hours at a time.
Vitamin Overdue. It's helped the Kent State baseball team shake one hell of a hangover.
At least in college baseball terms, it may have been the king of hangovers. Last June, Kent State's season of dreams didn't end until just five teams were left in the College World Series. The Golden Flashes went from the No. 3 seed in sub-regional play to defeating highly-ranked Oregon in the Super Regionals to Omaha, college baseball's Promised Land.
This year's team was promised nothing. It took a while for that to sink in.
"We certainly talked about turning the page," Kent State coach Scott Stricklin said. "We have a lot of guys back, but there was a point I needed to talk to these guys about making their own history. We played very good teams early in the year and it took us a while to get comfortable, but we did feel that we should re-address the

Jets draft Kent State OL Winters in third round

The New York Jets have selected versatile Kent State offensive lineman Brian Winters in the third round of the NFL draft.

Winters, who is 6-foot-4 and 310 pounds, started at left tackle for the Golden Flashes but is expected to play at guard in the NFL. It was a position of need for the Jets, who allowed Brandon Moore and Matt Slauson, the team's starters the last few years, to become free agents. Moore is still unsigned, but Slauson signed with Chicago.

The Jets signed veteran Willie Colon in the offseason and still have Vladimir Ducasse, their second-round pick in 2010, but Winters might be able to start immediately. He started a school-record 50 games for Kent State and is regarded as a punishing blocker.

Stony Brook, Kent St. struggling to find CWS form

Stony Brook and Kent State each finished the 2012 college baseball season among the elite teams in a sport long dominated by programs in the South and West.

Those two northern teams are far from the top of the game so far in 2013.

In fact, Stony Brook is close to the bottom after having its lineup gutted by a player exodus to professional baseball.

Seawolves coach Matt Senk knew it would be a long shot for his team to duplicate the magic that carried it to the College World Series for the first time. But he never imagined this: The Seawolves opened with nine straight losses and are 9-18 heading into this weekend's America East series at Albany.

''If last year was in many respects the perfect storm of talent and experience to get us to the College World Series, this has been kind of the reverse perfect storm,'' Senk said Thursday from his office on Long Island, N.Y.

Things aren't quite as dire 500 miles to the west at Kent State, but the Golden Flashes also have been less than dazz

Exclusive Interview: Kent State WR Eric Adeyemi

Wide receiver Eric Adeyemi is a Kentucky transfer that maximized his vast potential at Kent State. After serving mostly as a kick returner as a junior for the Golden Flashes- and logging 406 return yards- Adeyemi became more of a weapon on offense as a senior. He had 18 catches for 242 yards and 3 scores in a varied offense mostly focused on RB Dri Archer. After a strong Pro Day performance, Adeyemi opened the eyes of scouts and no doubt forced them back to the film. It was my pleasure to interview Eric for NFL Draft Zone.
Shaun DePasquale: Thank you for taking the time to speak with me today Eric. Can you tell me where you’re training for the NFL Draft?
Eric Adeyemi: I’m training on campus at Kent State with my strength and conditioning coach.
SD: What do you feel are your strengths and things you may need to work on?
EA: My strengths are my speed, quickness, and getting off the line of scrimmage. Making big plays. As far as thing I need to work on, I would say everything. A great ...

Storm postpones Fairfield-Kent State game

A winter storm has postponed Fairfield's game against Kent State in the first round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament until Wednesday.

The game was scheduled for Tuesday at Kent State's M.A.C. center on campus, but bad weather in the East forced a delay in Fairfield's travel plans. The team had been expected to arrive in Ohio on Monday night, but won't be arriving until Tuesday afternoon.

The game will be played on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The Golden Flashes (20-13) were beaten in the semifinals of the Mid-American Conference tournament by eventual champion Akron.

The Kent State Golden Flashes appeared in their first bowl game in 41 years in the GoDaddy.com Bowl. Unfortunately for them, it did not go the way they planned and they lost to the Arkansas State Red Wolves 17-13.It’s not surprising that they unveiled something special for this bowl game, but these helmets were utterly bizarre. Luckily, there is an awesome back story from SBNation that explains why the helmets looked like this.“When he came in, he found a gold helmet and said that would be the helmet that we wore in the bowl game,” Kent State athletic director Joel Nielsen said on Thursday. “So just last week, we had all our helmets painted, so you’ll see gold helmets for the Golden Flashes coming out on Jan. 6.“He said it the first week that he was on campus. He wanted his team to see that target every time they walked in the office. And that target was that gold helmet. It’s in a glass trophy case that has been in their office ever since he took the job. And so now, the young me...

Archer facing big decision after KSU bowl

Kent State's dream season ends Sunday night in the GoDaddy Bowl.
Dri Archer has a little more than a week to make a decision on whether it's his last game as a college player.
After spending 2011 on the sidelines, the dynamic but diminutive Archer earned first-team All-American honors as a kick returner despite the fact that no opponent has actually kicked to him since early to mid-October. He's been very good as a running back, slot guy and even a decoy, too, scoring 22 touchdowns for the season, at least one in 11 of Kent State's 13 games.
The NFL's underclass deadline for the 2013 draft is January 15, and Archer is going to be tempted by the chance to declare and get paid to play football from here on out.
When NFL teams brought in their scouts for December player evaluation meetings, Archer was discussed. By rule, teams are supposed to scout seniors only during the season. But anybody who turned on the Flashes' tape noticed Archer, and it's no secret that he'd be a prospect

Paul Haynes named coach at Kent State

Paul Haynes has been formally announced as Kent State's new coach.

Haynes, introduced Tuesday by athletic director Joel Nielsen, replaces Darrell Hazell, who led the Golden Flashes to an 11-2 season. Haynes last was the defensive coordinator at Arkansas.

Hazell became Purdue's coach Dec. 5 after guiding No. 25 Kent State to its first bowl berth in 40 years. He will coach Kent State against Arkansas State in the GoDaddy.com Bowl Jan. 5.

Haynes, 49, who played at Kent State (1987-91), met with the team before the press conference. He was on Jim Tressel's staff for seven years at Ohio State and was also an assistant at Michigan State, Louisville, Northern Iowa, Ferris State and Bowling Green.

Reports: Hazell leaving Kent State for Purdue

Darrell Hazell is expected to leave Kent State to coach Purdue, according to reports.

Hazell, who in his second year led the Golden Flashes to an 11-2 record and their first bowl since 1972, had not told Kent State officials he was leaving as of late Tuesday night. However, a person close to Kent State's program said Hazell has scheduled a Wednesday morning meeting with his staff and players.

Purdue officials flew to Ohio and met with Hazell on Monday, said the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because nothing has been made official.

ESPN.com and CBSSportsline.com, citing unidentified sources, reported Hazell has accepted the Purdue job.

An assistant at Ohio State under Jim Tressel before taking over at Kent State, Hazell was the Mid-American Conference's coach of the year this season.

The Golden Flashes will play Arkansas State in the GoDaddy.com Bowl on Jan. 6.

NCAA Report: Kent State coach Darrell Hazell to become Purdue’s new head coach

Former Buckeye assistant Darrell Hazell led Kent State to it’s first ever MAC championship game, and an 11-1 regular season record. For his efforts he was recognized as the 2012 MAC coach of the year.
Apparently that wasn’t all he earned.
According to multiple reports, including CBS Sports’ Bruce Feldman- Hazell is heading to West Lafayette, Indiana to take over a struggling Purdue program which recently fired Danny Hope.
Hazell took a program consistently in the basement and made contenders out of them in just two seasons. The former Jim Tressel assistant should do well in his return to the Big Ten.

Kent State, Arkansas State in GoDaddy.com Bowl

Kent State will meet Arkansas State in the GoDaddy.com Bowl in the first bowl appearance in 40 years for the Golden Flashes.

The game is played on Jan. 6, the eve of the BCS national championship game.

It's the second straight appearance in Mobile for Arkansas State, which lost 38-20 to Northern Illinois last season.

Kent State has won a program-record 11 games. The Golden Flashes are 0-2 all time in bowl games, including trips to the Refrigerator Bowl in 1954 and the Tangerine Bowl in 1972.

The Golden Flashes lost to Orange Bowl-bound Northern Illinois in double-overtime in the Mid-American Conference championship game.

The Red Wolves won the Sun Belt Conference title and are 9-3 under first-year head coach Gus Malzahn.

Kent State's Darrell Hazell named MAC's top coach

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Kent State's Darrell Hazell has been named the Mid-American Conference's coach of the year after directing the Golden Flashes' stunning turnaround.
In his second season, Hazell has Kent State ranked in the AP poll for the first time since 1973 and headed to its first bowl game since 1972. The No. 18 Golden Flashes have won 10 straight games going into Friday's MAC title game against No. 19 Northern Illinois.
Kent State's 11 wins are the most in the program's 90-year history. The Golden Flashes went 8-0 in conference play and went on the road to beat then-No. 15 Rutgers.
Hazell spent seven years as an assistant at Ohio State before he was hired at Kent State. He'll likely be pursued by several of the major programs with coaching vacancies.

Kent State Could Really Shake Things Up In The BCS

The Kent State Golden Flashes are 11-1 and currently ranked 17th in the BCS rankings. If the Flashes can somehow get into the top 16 of rankings, they could really shake some things up with the BCS bowl bids. Kent State earning a BCS bowl bid would likely impact whoever wins the Big East championship.
The Big East champion almost always ends up in the Orange Bowl and is guaranteed a BCS berth for the final two years of the system. However, the Sugar Bowl — with the second-to-last pick — would likely take this year’s Big East champion leaving the Orange Bowl to take Kent State.
Obviously Louisville will need to win against Rutgers on Thursday in order to be a part of the BCS bowls, but in my opinion I’d much rather play in the Sugar Bowl than the Orange Bowl. The competition would likely be much tougher, but it’ll give the Cards an opportunity to really prove themselves on a national level. Beating a team like Florida would be a tall task for Louisville, but with the Cards in the Big...

Kent State RB Dri Archer had a ridiculous touchdown run (Video)

We don’t usually post videos of touchdown runs here on LBS, much less ones that happened a few days ago, so you know it has to be really, really special to merit our attention. And that’s how I would describe the 74-yard touchdown run by Kent State running back Dri Archer on Saturday.
Archer, a junior running back from Florida, took an inside handoff from the shotgun formation and ran toward the left sideline during the fourth quarter of his team’s game against Bowling Green. He ran into a pileup that included three Bowling Green defenders, and somehow managed to avoid being tackled. He cut all the way across the field, avoided another tackle, and then cut back up the field and darted into the end zone to complete the long run.
Archer finished with 241 yards and two touchdowns on just 17 carries. This is his first year starting, and he has capitalized by putting up ridiculous stats.
Archer has rushed for 1,284 yards and 14 touchdowns, and he has 28 catches for 400 yards and four m...

Kent State’s Dri Archer Houses a 99-Yard Kickoff Return

Kent State took on Ball State today, in a Mid-American Conference match up and it was Kent State’s Dri Archer who made the highlight reel in the second quarter.
Archer is fast. Really fast. He took this kickoff return 99 yards in about ten seconds. Granted, it looked like Moses parting the Red Sea out there, but he was gone after he passed the first line of defense. Nobody on Ball State had a chance to catch him.
