News from Kent State basketball was not good Tuesday evening as word began to spread that 6-3 senior Chris Singletary's injured ankle from Sunday's scrimmage will likely sideline him at least until the start of the regular season, Nov. 13. Now, he might not be alone.

The former Michigan transfer is coming off a solid 2008 campaign, that involved missing a few games due to injury. In only 8 starts last year, Mixon registered 73 tackles, 5 tackles for loss and 2 sacks. Mixon proved to be one of the Flash's defensive playmakers last year as only a sophomore playing most of the year on a broken foot. Now in his junior season, Mixon once again continued his playmaking ways in the first game of the year, registering 12 tackles, 1 of them for a loss. Mixon looks to lead the Kent State defense to a big day against BCs inexperienced QBs.
FS Brian Lainhart
Even more so than Mixon, BCs young quarterbacks should beware of where Lainhart is at all times on the field. Lainhart led the MAC last year in interceptions with 6, along with tallying 106 tackles. To start out this year, Lainhart recorded and interception in his first game and returned it for 16 yards. Don't be surprised to see the junior free safety take advantage of the Eagles' inexperience at quarterback this Saturday.
RB Eugene Jarvis
By far the most indispensable player on Kent State's roster is senior tailback Eugene Jarvis. Jarvis did have a somewhat of a down year in 2008, missing 3 games due to injury and only recording 801 yards on 4.9 yards per carry, and 9 touchdowns. This was a dramatic decrease in production from 2007, when Jarvis rushed for 1,669 yards on the year (and running at an impressive 6 yards per carry). Jarvis is looking to return back to form in 2009, and started off well in week 1, rushing for 146 yards. Look for Jarvis to receive a big workload on Saturday.

Sunday was the 38th anniversary of the Kent State shootings, when National Guardsmen opened fire on Vietnam War protesters, killing four students. And Nick Saban was on campus that day, as the current Alabama coach was a defensive end for the Golden Flashes' football team. It seems strange that someone who experienced such a tragic event would later compare a loss to Louisiana-Monroe with 9/11 and World War II.
