Video: Ohio Softball Outfielder Saves Homerun, Tumbles Over The Fence, Ends The Game

Alyssa Wolfe, a junior outfielder for Ohio University, saved the day yesterday for the Bobcats against Miami (OH) with an amazing catch in crunch time. With Ohio leading 4-3 (in what became in the final at-bat of the game), Miami’s Jenna Modic, with a runner on first base, crushed a pitch to left center.
But Wolfe caught up to it, making the catch just before crashing into the fence. Luckily for her, the “wall” gave way, and she was able to avoid a nasty injury.
Naturally, her teammates were pumped. The catch also kept the Bobcats alive in the MAC tournament – pretty cool.

Your College Softball Catch of the Day--Through the Wall

((ht: deadspin.com))

Nicely done young lady.

Alyssa Wolfe, outfielder for Ohio University made a catch Thursday in her teams conference semi-final tournament that is, well, being shown on a lot of blogs and TV this morning.

The reason: It was pretty impressive.

Wolfe runs tracks, runs down and then runs through the outfield fence to make a running catch ending Ohio's game with Miami of Ohio, sending the Bobcats to the MAC Tourney finals.

Scheduling Change For Louisville Football

Brett McMurphy of ESPN.com is reporting that there has been a date and time for Louisville football’s season opener against Ohio has changed.
The game was initially set to take place on Saturday, August 31st, but has been moved to Sunday September 1st at 3:30. The game will be televised by ESPN.
I’m personally not a big fan of college football games on Sundays, but I suppose there are benefits to playing on ESPN.
Expect the four letter network to get the Teddy Heisman campaign started on September 1st.
In all honesty, the Ohio Bobcats may be one of the better teams on Louisville’s schedule this year. They went 9-4 last year, including a win over Louisiana Monroe in the Independence Bowl.

Fresh FizzCast: Drew Allen Says He Landed at SU Because of Ohio Connections

So how did it come to be that a San Antonio quarterback who had fallen in love with Oklahoma, ended up quickly deciding on transferring to Syracuse? Credit Northeast Ohio. The Cleveland-Youngstown corridor is the stop over for Drew Allen on his way from Norman to the Hill. The signal caller spoke to The Fizz and described how SU developed into his preferred destination while he analyzed his options.

Listen to the FizzCast with Drew Allen here:

“Syracuse came along because, I felt like, we needed a couple more options. I sent some emails out to some schools that lost their quarterback to the draft or didn’t have a set quarterback and Syracuse was one of them. I heard back from Syracuse within fifteen minutes of the email. They didn’t know about me. They didn’t know that I was available or looking around, so I was glad I was able to get that email out there.
I took that Syracuse visit within two weeks of them contacting me. I absolutely just fell in love with the place, the coaches...

Ohio's Offutt ready for final shot

Three stops, five years, countless friends, plenty of wisdom gained.

As almost any Ohio State player would hope to do, he played a big part in beating Michigan in the NCAA tournament, too. He just did it three years after leaving Ohio State.

Now, this is it for Walter Offutt. Finally. One more bus ride with his Ohio University teammates to Cleveland for the Mid-American Conference tournament, one more shot at the NCAA tournament and another flight, another chapter, another page in the scrapbook.

It's been, in Offutt's own words, "a journey." A winding one. A fulfilling one.

Offutt has pegged coaching as his preferred career path, so this isn't the last March he'll deal with fleeting moments, fast-closing windows and small margins for error. But is his last as a player, and the last for the most successful senior class in Ohio University history.

D.J. Cooper and Company have pushed Ohio to two NCAA Tournaments in his first three years, and Offutt played more than a bit part a

Robbery postpones EMU basketball game

Eastern Michigan's men's basketball game scheduled for Wednesday night in Athens, Ohio, was postponed following an armed robbery near the Ohio University campus.

Police were searching for the man who robbed a woman at gunpoint, stealing 5, at an apartment complex Wednesday morning, according to the Athens Messenger newspaper.

"I do understand the importance of gun control and how serious incidents like these are," Eastern Michigan coach Rob Murphy told the Detroit Free Press. "I truly respect the decision of Ohio Universitys president and the importance of apprehending the suspect. The school shut down every building on campus. If you do that, you should take away basketball, as well.

"With everything that has gone on throughout the country recently with guns and gun control issues and shootings, I think they made the right move. That is a very, very serious issue. The game will be made up at some point. The school wanted to make sure the campus is safe and secure. (Our team) un

Ohio postpones E Michigan game after campus closes

Ohio says Wednesday night's home game against Eastern Michigan is postponed because the campus shut down as a precaution amid a search for an armed robbery suspect.

The Bobcats (15-5, 6-0 Mid-American Conference) say the game against Eastern Michigan (10-10, 3-3 MAC) has been rescheduled for 7 p.m. on Feb. 20 in Athens.

Ohio University officials had called in extra police officers and notified students Wednesday morning following an armed robbery at an apartment complex near campus. The school says the suspect allegedly had a handgun and fled on foot in the direction of the university.

The university was expected to reopen Thursday.

Robbery forces closure of Ohio U. campus

Ohio Universitys men's basketball game on Wednesday night vs. Eastern Michigan was canceled after an armed robbery near campus forced a campus closure.

The school shut down operations for the day while the robbery suspect remains at large.
At 12:25 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Ohio University posted the following statement on its website: In light of the fact that the armed fugitive that was spotted in the Athens campus vicinity has not been apprehended, the President (Dr. Roderick J. McDavis) has decided as a precautionary measure to close the Athens campus. All classes are cancelled, all students will be asked to return to their residences, and all non-essential employees should return home. Unless notified otherwise, classes and normal work activities will resume Thursday at their normal times.
Ohio (15-5 overall, 6-0 in MAC) faces first-placed Akron (15-4, 6-0) in a nationally-televised showdown on Saturday.

Bobcats creeping toward top 25 ranking

Pardon Ohio University coach Frank Solich for his desire to run what he proudly hopes will continue to be a "boring" program.

As the wins and national attention keep coming for the Bobcats, Solich's first instinct is make sure boring translates to focused and consistent performances.

He's not going to tell his players to avoid glancing at the major national polls as Ohio creeps toward what would be the program's first top 25 ranking, but Solich wants to make sure they understand that any out of the ordinary attention they're receiving can disappear as quickly as it comes.

"I like being boring," Solich said. "I like just winning football games. There's a lot of stuff on the periphery and I'm aware of all that, but I'm not concerned by it. I'm a bottom line guy. That's just kind of how I operate.

"Does a top 25 ranking mean anything to me today? No. But is it something we'd like our program to be able to accomplish? No question. We're not going into this next game or any game with any thought of being a top 25 team. We have a ways to go. We don't see ourselves as having proven an awful lot yet. We still have a lot to prove, and we know that every time you step on the field in our conference, you have to be on top of your game or you'll get beat."

The 4-0 Bobcats haven't cracked the national rankings yet, but they're getting close. Considering the next three games are against UMass, Buffalo and Akron -- those three have two total wins thus far -- the Bobcats figure to keep climbing.

The Bobcats received 40 vote points in this week's Associated Press poll, putting them 29th. Ohio got 13 points in the USA Today Coaches Poll, putting them 37th. The respected college football blog Pre-Snap Read has Ohio at 20th -- the Bobcats started the season 26th in that poll -- and College Football News, which ranks all 124 Div. I-FBS teams weekly, has Ohio at 45th in its newest list.

"I accept the attention. I think it's better than the alternative," Solich said. "Someone even mentioning Ohio University as a top 25 team nationally is great for our program. It's great for our players to get mentioned. It's great for the university and the community and everyone who's excited about our program. I'm glad we're getting some attention. You can't recruit without attention. I'm glad it's happening but it doesn't change the bottom line. The bottom line is our guys have a chance to have a successful season and they have to make it work."

Solich welcomes all that's come with his program's recent run of success. He's 54-40 as Ohio's coach, 31-14 since 2009. The Bobcats have won the MAC East title twice in the last three seasons and were the unanimous pick of preseason poll voters to win it again.

"I don't know when we took over this program that there were a lot of expectations," Solich said.

Last year's win over Utah State in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl was Ohio's first bowl win since 1968. That it capped a five-year run of 36-27 which is the best five-year record in program history says a lot about how far the program has come.

The next step, internally, is to win the MAC title game. If the Bobcats keep winning as they chase that, the rankings will come. The chances of crashing the BCS party, even at 13-0, are very slim. That's a long way away, but the top 25 is not.

Seeing Ohio University in those rankings? Even Solich couldn't spin that as boring.

"A top 25 ranking can be a measuring stick," Solich said. "Whether it is for us yet or not, I'm not sure. But it can be. From where we've started to where we are now, there's a lot that's been accomplished. I feel really good about the job our staff has done, what our players have done and the backing we have from our president and our athletic director and the community. There's a lot that goes into a program being successful. We're fortunate to have a lot of the right pieces you need to move a program forward.

"We're more concerned about how we're preparing to play and how we're playing than long-range goals. They're out there, and they're good things. But you'd better be zeroed in on what's happening today."

Video: Ohio University Marching Band Does “Gangnam Style”

The combination of two very hip things makes one ultra-hip video. The Ohio University football team is 4-0 so far on this young college football season, and seems destined to potentially finish 12-0, barring some shocking upset in MAC play. Meanwhile, Psy’s “Gangnam Style” video is all over the web, and was actually in WWW last weekend.
So what makes the most sense? For the always rowdy OU band to do their own rendition of the ever-growing dance craze. #MACtion just went to a whole new level.

Christian back in familiar spot at Ohio U

ATHENS, Ohio - In a few ways, Jim Christian has been here before.

In six years at Kent State -- all 20-plus win seasons -- he coached his share of games against Ohio University. His first year at Kent, 2003, came as a new coach taking over a team coming off a dream season as the Flashes had advanced all the way to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.

Tuesday, Christian was officially named head coach at Ohio University. For his personal encore, he takes over a Mid-American Conference team coming off an appearance in the Sweet 16.

For the last four years, Christian has been the head coach at Texas Christian University. Up until the last six days, he thought he'd be back at TCU for the Horned Frogs' first season in the Big 12 and a chance to build on his first winning season of the four he'd been at TCU.

But when Ohio University athletic director Jim Schaus reached out last week -- first through a mutual friend, leading to a meeting at the Final Four in New Orleans -- Christian was immediate

Illinois will announce John Groce as men's basketball coach at a press conference expected Thursday afternoon.Groce, who led Ohio University to 29 wins and took the Bobcats to the Sweet 16, where they lost in overtime to North Carolina, would earn an annual salary of at least 1.35 million and bring most of his coaching staff with him from the Mid-American Conference champion. Groce was also a Matta assistant at Butler and Xavier.Bruce Weber was fired March 9 after nine seasons.Illinois made a play for Virginia Commonwealth coach Shaka Smart and then attempted to hire Brad Stevens away from Butler.
Illinois contacts Ohio's Groce about job

The search for a new basketball coach continued Monday at the University of Illinois, with Ohio's John Groce the latest candidate to be contacted.

According to CBS Sports, the 40-year-old Groce is interested in the position, which has been vacant for weeks after Illinois fired Bruce Weber.

After VCU's Shaka Smart declined an offer from Illinois a week ago, Butler's Brad Stevens took his name out of the running over the weekend.

"I am happy and extremely grateful to be the head coach at Butler University," Stevens said in a statement Sunday. "I am already looking forward to next season and the start of our postseason workouts in April."

The 35-year-old Stevens has turned down big offers from major programs on a yearly basis, having led tiny Butler to the national championship game in 2010 and 2011.

Groce's Ohio Bobcats were champions of the MAC this season, losing Friday in the Sweet 16 to North Carolina in overtime.

Groce is familiar with the Big Ten, serving as a top assistant to Ohio State's Thad Matta from 2004-08. He was previously an assistant to Matta at Xavier and Butler.
