MAC Preview: Toledo relying on "Coach Tuke" to stabilize the defense

#MACtion is synonymous with shootouts in the college football world, and few teams in the country’s wildest conference have lived up to the offensive hype as consistently over the years as the Toledo Rockets.

Stopping opponents, on the other hand, tends to present more of a challenge for the MACsters, Toledo included.

At the end of the 2011 season, newly made 32-year-old head coach Matt Campbell looked within the Rockets’ own conference for a defensive architect who was accustomed to combating all those prolific attacks. The name he came up with was Tom Matukewicz, linebackers coach at Northern Illinois and longtime disciple of former Huskies coach Jerry Kill.

The first season of “Coach Tuke” running Toledo’s defense produced a mixed bag of results. The Rockets gave solid efforts in performances like a 29-23 win over Cincinnati. Then there were those horrendous nights such as the Oct. 13 nailbiter against lowly Eastern Michigan. Toledo won, 52-47, but the D surrendered 624 ya...

Photo Courtesy: USA Today Sports/Andrew Weber

It's MAC Week here at CBR and personally I'm pretty geeked about it. After all, there's a reason why #MACtion has become all the rage amongst the college football geeks out there and why the casual fan is starting to catch on. It's because they know what I know - on any given Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday and the occasional Saturday as well we are likely to see just about anything go down.

It's what makes the higher-up's at the MAC conference offices and the coaches willing to play along geniuses. They've got a great platform all to their own and now, for the most part they've got four or five teams that can compete on a pretty high level. NIU played three quarters of great football in the conference's first ever BCS birth before bowing to the physically superior FSU squad in the Orange Bowl and the profile of the conference hasn't been higher than it is in 2013.

Cleveland.com Toledo defensive end Ben Pike may not have been an All-American, but his name was on the radar of NFL scouts. That’s what makes this story even more amazing. Cleveland.com is reporting that the Rockets star is walking away from football to take care of his Leukemia-stricken fiancée, Ashlee Barrett. When Barrett found out that her Leukemia had returned, the decision for Pike to quit football was an easy one. The 22-year-old had one more year of eligibility left, and most likely could have looked forward to a career in the NFL. Instead, he will graduate in May, and return to St. Louis.
Toledo Rockets gear up for shootout

It's been more than a decade since the Toledo Rockets have been in the Associated Press Top 25.
They'd like to stay a while.
But less than 60 hours after climbing to No. 23, the Rockets will be tested on Tuesday night when they host Ball State in a game full of risk and reward for both teams.
"For us and our staff and our kids, the thing that has gotten us to this point is our ability to focus on getting better each day," first-year Rockets coach Matt Campbell said. "That's the thing that makes November really special. We know how important that is. It's a great honor (to be ranked) but it's something you'd like to end the season with."
By almost any measure, the Rockets and Cardinals have a lot in common -- particularly in terms of being well stocked with dangerous offensive players and leaky defenses.
The Rockets (8-1, 5-0 Mid-American Conference) are out to extend an eight-game winning streak and put themselves in position to play in the MAC title game. The Cardi

It's been more than a decade since the Toledo Rockets have been in the Associated Press Top 25.

They'd like to stay there a while.

The nation's No. 23 team will be tested right away on Tuesday night when it hosts Ball State in a game that is full of risk and reward for both teams.

The Rockets (8-1, 5-0 Mid-American Conference) are out to extend an eight-game winning streak and put themselves in position to play in the MAC title game. The Cardinals (6-3, 3-2) can enhance their bowl prospects by pulling off the upset.

Souped-up offenses that combine to average 68 points and 919 yards a game - and beaten-down defenses that surrender 60 points and 931 yards - will be in the spotlight.

Sportsmanship prevailed following UC-UT game

The end of last Saturday's Cincinnati-Toledo game brought an outpouring of emotion -- and an outpouring of Toledo students from the student section to the field to celebrate the Rockets' 29-23 victory.
By the time Toledo wide receiver and kick returner extraordinaire Bernard Reedy made it out of the pile of people and towards the Toledo locker room, he really couldn't hear much. And, at first, he had no idea who had grabbed his shoulder pad to get his attention.
It was Cincinnati head coach Butch Jones, who wanted offer Reedy a word of congratulations and good luck going forward.
For one night anyway, sportsmanship lived.
"I didn't know who it was at first," Reedy said. "There was too much going on. I was too amped. I was out of breath and just trying to get back to the locker room.
"We just talked for a few seconds. He just told me to keep up the good work and to keep leading, that we had a good team with a chance to win a bunch more games this season."

Toledo’s quarterback (who doesn’t play baseball) was drafted by the Padres

Terrance Owens, the quarterback of the Toledo Rockets, got a surprise the other day. It turns out he was drafted in the last round of the MLB draft. The weird thing is that he doesn’t play baseball.
He was the 1,215 overall pick in the 40th round of the MLB draft. Owens isn’t planning on pursuing a Major League Baseball career and is returning to Toledo to continue being a quarterback. Owens played some little league baseball but by no means is he considered a two league sport athlete. Apparently the Padres wanted to make Terrance Owens a left handed pitcher.
Like Graham Watson pointed out, no wonder the Padres are in last place.

Rockets bounce back, ready for MAC Tourney

After the Rockets saw their window of opportunity slammed shut before they could possibly grab a piece of the Mid-American Conference West Division championship, a little bit of the life came out of the team.

Toledo went into the final week of the season still in the mix for the title, but after Eastern Michigan slipped by Western Michigan in the final seconds on Feb. 29, that eliminated the Rockets while Toledo's game at Northern Illinois was still in progress. Toledo then floundered against the Huskies, falling 65-61.

If the Rockets were looking to send a message that they deserved a better ending to this season of revival, they found a way to do it in the following game.

The Rockets hosted the MAC's West Division outright champion, Eastern Michigan, on the final day of the regular season, and administered a 76-51 beating to the Eagles. Only MAC overall champion Akron handed Eastern Michigan a worse setback in the conference season.

Toldeo walk-on making his presence felt

If the Rockets are going to make the dramatic turnaround they are hoping for, they are going to need a little magic. If Toledo has any chance of recovering from back-to-back 4-28 seasons and becoming a MAC contender, some amazing things have to happen.

Sophomore center Richard Wonnell might be one of the unexpected pieces in such an unlikely puzzle.

The 6-foot-9 walk-on plays only about seven minutes per game, but he does not appear to be intimidated at all by the moment or the matchups when the Rockets call on him. Timely contributions from players such as Wonnell will be vital in any Toledo surge in the coming weeks.

In a recent two-point home loss to one of the Mid-American Conference's favorites, Ball State, Wonnell had a huge role in keeping things close. He was matched up with 6-9 forward Jarrod Jones, arguably the best player in the MAC.

With the Rockets lacking size in their starting lineup, Wonnell was called on to provide some physical resistance against Jones' attempts to rule the insid

Toledo wide receiver Eric Page entering NFL draft

Toledo wide receiver Eric Page is leaving school a year early to go into the NFL draft.

Page's decision, announced Thursday, is a bit of surprise. He says he's been told that he likely won't be selected until the third round at the earliest.

Page is passing up a chance to break the NCAA's record for receptions in a career. He would have needed just 44 catches next year to pass the mark held by Oklahoma's Ryan Broyles.

Page does hold several records at Toledo where he was also a dangerous kick returner. He ran three kickoffs back for touchdowns in his sophomore year.

This season, he caught a school-record 125 passes.

Rockets quietly soar into 2012

The improvement to date has been substantial, with the Rockets going through the 2011 portion of the schedule at 7-6, and seemingly primed to enter the Mid-American Conference season on a mission to win back some respect.Toledo went 4-28 last year and was dead last in the league at 1-15, so the room for growth was obvious. The rest of the MAC will soon learn that this is a much, much improved team. But the Rockets will have to learn how to deal with the limitations on that improvement.Despite the influx of new talent, the dramatic overhaul of the roster, and the on-going re-sculpting of the culture surrounding the program, the ceiling is still there. The Rockets will need to temper their enthusiasm with a coating of reality. With no seniors, two juniors in their first year in the program, and 10 freshmen and sophomores, Toledo will still experience considerable frustration and pain as it moves through the MAC. Head coach Tod Kowalczyk has seen his team struggle with doubt and confidence issues in the pre-confe

Explosive Rockets could get bowl attention

Explosive Rockets should attract bowl attentionThe guys in the funny-colored sport coats that usually spend most of the game walking around in the press box, smiling and politicking, have to be giddy over the prospect of landing the Rockets for their bowl game.Toledo (8-4) made its case with a dominant 45-28 win over Ball State in its final game of the season. The Rockets shared the Mid-American Conference West Division title with Northern Illinois, but the Huskies will play in the MAC title game based on their win over Toledo. The Rockets have to look awfully attractive to the bowl committees, given their propensity for scoring explosions. Toledo's win over Ball State marked a fifth straight game with the Rockets scoring 40 or more points. One of the most likely scenarios places the Rockets in the Little Caesar's Pizza Bowl in Detroit against Northwestern from the Big Ten. Playing so close to home would certainly mean a much bigger Toledo following would attend the game."We'll go anywhere," Toledo coach Tim Beckman said. "We need bowls, because it enables our young players to continue to improve and it gives our seniors the opportunity to play one more game."Toledo also has the big-time star that bowls covet in All-American wide receiver and return man Eric Page. The junior had 16 pass receptions for 145 yards in the final game of the season against Ball State. He also is a threat to take punts and kickoffs the distance, and as the holder on extra points and field goals, the former high school quarterback adds an element of intrigue each time the Rockets line up to kick. The MAC has three automatic bowl tie-ins, and since the two division champions get one each, there is a lot of competition for that third bid. Depending on how the other conferences finish their seasons, the MAC could pick up one or two more bids, which would make the Rockets a lock to play in a bowl. It's hard to imagine any team in the MAC looking more appealing than Toledo, with its explosive offense and star power.NOTES, QUOTES--Toledo has registered back-to-back 7-1 Mid-American Conference seasons for the first time in school history. The last time the Rockets lost fewer than two conference games over a two-year span was back in 1970 and 1971 when the Rockets went 10-0-0 and were 5-0-0 in the conference each year.--With its 45-28 win over Ball State to close the season, Toledo established a school record with a fifth straight game scoring 40 or more points.--Junior WR Eric Page finished the Ball State game with a career-high 16 receptions for 145 yards. Page's 16 receptions are the second-most in a game in school history, trailing only Nick Moore's 20 receptions against Michigan.KEEP AN EYE ON: RB Adonis Thomas -- The senior carried the ball 25 times for a game-high 141 yards in the win over Ball State, scoring a touchdown and surpassing the 100-yard mark for a fourth straight game. Since returning from a broken arm that kept him sidelined for a month mid-season, Thomas has been trending upward and bringing his team along for the ride.LOOKING GOOD: The Rockets have perfected the art of blasting out of the gate and jumping on the opposition. In the season-ending win over Ball State, Toledo opened the game with a 15-play, 80-yard drive that was concluded with a four-yard scoring run from senior RB Adonis Thomas. The Rockets have scored on their opening possession in six games this season, five times scoring touchdowns.STILL NEEDS WORK: The Rockets are dealing with the disappointment of knowing they had their biggest game of the season at home and failed to take advantage of that opportunity. If they had defeated Northern Illinois, the Rockets would be playing in the MAC title game this week. They had their destiny in their hands, and then let it slip away. The next, big step for this program is to take the division title and advance to the conference championship game.QUOTE TO NOTE: "It's a great feeling to know that we broke those records, but I'm more glad that we got the win than anything, and we can have a better record than last year. We finished 8-5 last year. We're 8-4 right now and going to a bowl game, so that's the best feeling." -- Toledo All-American WRKR Eric Page after setting single-season school record with his 104th reception and catching a career-high 16 passes in a 45-28 win over Ball State. Page finished with 112 receptions on the season.STRATEGY AND PERSONNELPLAYER NOTES:--WR Eric Page set a Toledo record early in the Ball State game with his 104th reception of the season. He finished the game with a career-best 16 receptions for 145 yards.--QB Terrance Owens, starting for the second straight game while Austin Dantin remained sidelined with a concussion, connected on a career-high 27-of-32 passes, good for 267 yards and four touchdowns.--WR Bernard Reedy had a 30-yard touchdown reception in the win over Ball State, his sixth touchdown catch of the season.--PK Ryan Casano has hit on 10-of-13 field-goal attempts this season.ROSTER REPORT--QB Austin Dantin missed a second straight game with concussion-like symptoms. Dantin started Toledo's first 10 games of the season. He was replaced by QB Terrance Owens.--TE Danny Noble broke his fibula in his right leg in the earlier MAC win over Eastern Michigan and was lost for the remainder of the season. There is a chance Noble could be available for any post-season play.--DE T.J. Fatinikun injured his arm in the game against Eastern Michigan and was lost for the season.--S Mark Singer injured his shoulder late in camp and missed all of the 2011 season. The senior expects to get a medical redshirt and return in 2012.
