Boston College to Play USC in Emerald Bowl

Press Release from the people of the Emerald Bowl:

We're delighted to announce that the USC Trojans will take on Boston College in the 8th Annual Emerald Bowl. This is a great day for our game, as this high-profile matchup should sell out AT&T Park and draw a big television audience.
USC is one of the true marquee names in college football. Over the years, the Trojans have produced 11 national championship teams and seven Heisman Trophy winners. Prior to this season, they had recorded seven straight years with BCS bowl appearances, Pac-10 titles, 11-win seasons and rankings in top four (in the AP poll). When we started this Bowl eight years ago, I doubt any of us would've even contemplated having USC in the game.
Boston College brings a team that was picked last in the Atlantic Division of the ACC in pre-season polls, yet posted an 8-4 record under first-year coach Frank Spaziani. The Eagles overcame the loss of the returning ACC defensive player of the year, Mark Herzlich, and starting quarterback Dominique Davis. BC is also one of the premier academic institutions in the nation and boasts the highest graduation rates of all NCAA athletic programs.
We're very proud that we've been able to put together another excellent matchup that will generate more national exposure and local support for our game and our corporate partners.

The 8-0 University of Miami men’s basketball team heads north to open its Atlantic Coast Conference slate at Boston College on Sun., Dec. 6, at 3 p.m. The game will be broadcast as part of FSN’s ACC Sunday Night Hoops, with Fox Sports Florida carrying the game live in South Florida.

What Happens On An ACC Coaches' Day Off?

With back-to-back off days after the end of the ACC/Big 10 Challenge, SCACCHoops.com used our exclusive access to find out what each of the ACC coaches are doing with their time off. Let's take a fun, AND ENTIRELY FICTIONAL, trip around the ACC...

Al Skinner of Boston College was seen relaxing knowing his team is overachieving early without Rakim Sanders in the lineup. Skinner knows when Sanders returns so does the pressure, so secretly he's been telling Sanders to skip his treatment.

Down in Clemson, things aren't so rosy for Oliver Purnell. Purnell was seen sleeping in his office, obviously having a nightmare. All that was heard was "No, no...get...ball...to...all-american, no more...threes." Purnell then woke up in a cold sweat, checked the Illinois box score, and started sucking his thumb and rocking back and forth.

In Durham, Mike Krzyzewski found himself jealous of Al Skinner. With the return of Mason Plumlee, there aren't anymore injured players to place all hope upon. Instead, Krzyzewski was seen browsing the web performing one common search on Google.

Down in Tallahassee, Leonard Hamilton's team has seen highs and lows this season. His team jumped out to a nice early start only to flop versus Florida and Ohio State. Hamilton used his off day recruiting a player that could dribble the ball all the way up the floor without turning it over. Hamilton went to New York City, a hotbed of point guards, and after purchasing a ticket, found himself watching a guy in Madison Square Garden. After the player's game, the player was seen telling Hamilton "Coach, I've told you, I used all of my eligibility and I play for the Knicks now, I can't come back!"

Maryland coach, Gary Williams, was simply seen sweating. He even does that on his off-days.

Miami coach, Frank Haith, spent the day baking. You might ask, what was he baking? I'll give you a hint. Miami is the lone undefeated team in the ACC and boast the 315th strongest schedule out of around 350 teams.

In North Carolina, Roy Williams was seen telling assistant coaches that with his right arm in a sling, all he has to do is snap and say "aww shucks" to give off the wholesome country boy image. Its important to do that to hide verbal sparring with recruits.

In Raleigh, Sidney Lowe was seen telling reporters that despite having the slowest tempo in the ACC (63 possessions per game) that "We really are a running team. In those 60 possessions, we get up-and-down the floor."

Virginia's Tony Bennett spent his off-day watching game tape of Duke-Wisconsin. Seems pretty normal right? What you may not realize is that Bennett wasn't watching Wisconsin backscreens or Duke's offensive scheme. Instead, he was watching the Wisconsin fans trying to remember what a passionate, patient fanbase was like.

Virginia Tech's Seth Greenberg was seen hugging Malcolm Delaney and saying "I'm never going to let go." To which Delaney replied, "Coach, I've checked, I can't enter the draft until after the season."

Dino Gaudio spent his day off watching YouTube. OK, I know that makes no sense, but that auto-tune stuff makes me laugh.

The ACC gets started again tomorrow with a strong non-conference schedule, until then I'm enjoying an off-day.

BC Beats Michigan, 62-58

Boston College defeated Michigan on the road tonight in the ACC-Big10 challenge. This marks a nice road win for the Eagles who are still without Rakim Sanders.

BC out-played and out-coached Michigan throughout the game, easily dismantling Michigan's 1-3-1 zone in the first half. BC was led by Corey Raji who scored 24 points (17 in the fist half) and grabbed 9 rebounds. Joe Trapani added a double-double (12 boards, 11 points.) BC was up by double digits with under 3 minutes remaining but a series of missed free throws and Michigan three-pointers made the game much closer than it should have been.

BC held Michigan to 32 percent shooting (26.5 from three) in what was a great defensive effort by the team. They held a significant rebounding edge (41-27) and blocked 6 shots.

BC opens up ACC play at home against Miami this Sunday. Tickets are still available.

Tonight marks the annual Big 10/ACC Challenge game for Boston College. They will travel to face Michigan tonight at 730 on ESPN2.

Michigan enters this game 3-2 with back-to-back losses against Marquette and Alabama. Head coach John Beilein is well known for his 1-3-1 zone defense which can be stifling to an offense trying to run the high post. Penetrating the lane will be key and look for Reggie Jackson to accumulate plenty of assists by driving and dishing. The Eagles come into this game hurting; Rakim Sanders is still out and Roche (back) and Trapani (flu) may not be at full strength. Look for Josh Southern to contribute in his homecoming to Michigan. He will be the biggest guy on the floor most of the time and could exploit the interior defense of the Wolverines.

Michigan is led by guard Manny Haris who is averaging 22.2 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 6 assists a game. The talented junior is a legitimate NBA prospect and will be a very difficult match up for BC. I think we will likely see a mixture of Jackson and Raji guarding Harris. Senior Forward DeShawn Sims is another player to look for. At 6'8 he is the only serious post threat for the Wolverines. Southern typically struggles against these smaller, quicker big men.

This game will come right down to the end. BC has more weapons, but is Trapani is not at full strength they may struggle.

Four BC Players Earn All-ACC honors

Tackle Anthony Castonzo and linebacker Luke Kuechly were each recognized as first team all-ACC players today. Running back Montel Harris and center Matt Tennant both earned second team honors.

I would have liked to see Marcellus Bowman recognized for his stupendous play but I think most fans are still very pleased to see four of our starters recognized. The best part is that three of the four will most likely be starting again for the Eagles next season.

Rakim Sanders Injured | Out 2-4 weeks

In yesterday's loss to Saint Joseph's Boston College star Rakim Sanders injured his ankle and was forced to sit out the remainder of the game. According to a tweet from Andy Katz he is expected to be out for a few weeks.

"Bad news from BC staff: Rakim Sanders ankle injury could keep him out for weeks. He was done early in to loss to St. Joe's in VI."

The good news is that BC has only one conference game, against lowly Miami, in the next coming weeks. Unfortunately the Eagles could use Sanders for key non conference match-ups with Providence and Michigan.

Sanders had already been suspended for Boston College's first two games for violation of team rules. Look for Tyler Roche to continue to get big minutes if Sanders misses any action.

BC Cruises To 89-58 Victory Over Dartmouth

Tyler Roche took advantage of his increased minutes in a big way Friday night with a career high 30-point explosion leading the way for an 89-58 defeat of Dartmouth in Boston College’s season opener.

Roche was highly efficient shooting 10-12 from the floor including four three pointers. He also played strong defense at the power forward spot tallying five blocks. Roche benefited from the suspensions of Courtney Dunn and Corey Raji and the early foul trouble that limited Joe Trapani to just three minutes in the first half. Roche, along with Reggie Jackson, played a total of 38 minutes in the contest.

Jackson added 16 points, six rebounds, and four assists in an impressive all-around showing. In the post-game Jackson acknowledges the increased role he will be taking on this season saying, “sometimes I feel that I take it upon myself -- that if we're in a slump, it's my responsibility to get a bucket."

As expected it was a sloppy game for both teams. Boston College committed 19 turnovers and Biko Paris had as many turnovers (six) as he did points.

Skinner said of his team’s performance, “there were times I was very pleased.” He also added that the “inconsistency on defense was a problem,” much of the blame he put simply on laziness by his players which allowed Dartmouth to beat BC for some easy backdoor moves.

BC fans got to see plenty of Dallas Elmore as he played 25 minutes in this contest. His athleticism, particularly on the defensive end, was impressive and he had 10 points to go along with six rebounds and three blocks, one of which was a highlight reel type rejection that he smacked hard against the backboard on a fast break lay-up attempt.
