Duke sends football recruit 115 letters and photos of him getting drafted

115 PERSONAL LETTERS FROM DUKE. JUST TODAY. WOW twitter.com/horribleharry9…
— Harrison Phillips (@horribleharry99) May 18, 2013

This year it seems that college football teams have been stepping up their recruiting tactics and overloading recruits with more letters than ever before. Normally it’s been your typical schools sending the massive amounts of letters to recruits, but now it appears that the Duke Blue Devils have joined in the game. The Blue Devils sent a football recruit, Harrison Phillips, 115 recruiting letters in one day and in the letters they enclosed some pictures as well. The photos are Phillips face photoshopped onto a draft photo (apparently they think Phillips will go to the Chargers), as well as including some photos of a Bentley and a Helicopter. I guess Duke was thinking if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.
look at this. Apparently I made it to the nfl twitter.com/horribleharry9…

Report: Coach K to return to Team USA

Mike Krzyzewski had decided to remain coach of the U.S. men’s Olympic basketball team. Krzyzewski will try to lead the Americans to a third straight gold medal, a person with knowledge of the decision said Wednesday. Originally expected to step down, Krzyzewski will hold a news conference Thursday at Duke to confirm his return, the person told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because no official announcement has been made. The Hall of Fame coach has led the Americans since 2005, winning gold at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, and the 2010 world basketball championship. His return was first reported by Sports Illustrated. “I think it’s great,” two-time gold medalist LeBron James said Wednesday night before the Miami Heat faced Indiana. “What he means to USA Basketball is beyond just what we do on the court. It’s what we stand for as Americans and being proud of the red, white and blue every time we step off the bus or practice or talk to the media or whatever th...

Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski To Coach USA Olympic Basketball Team

After leading the Americans to the gold medal in 2012, Duke University head basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski has decided that he will coach the U.S. Olympic team again.
Krzyzewski was expected to step down, but recently changed his mind and will instead travel to Rio de Janeiro in 2016 for a shot at the Americans’ third consecutive gold medal. According to ESPN, USA basketball will hold a press conference tomorrow at 10:40 at Duke to announce the rest of the U.S. Olympic coaching staff.
There’s already been some speculation on who will coach alongside him. According to ESPN, Syracuse head basketball coach Jim Boeheim will once again be one of Coach K’s assistants.

Last week we reported that Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski, was thinking about backing out of his mini-retirement from coaching the USA Basketball Team.
Well, according to Pete Thamel of Sports Illustrated, Krzyzewski is expected to announce his return soon.
Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski will be returning as the head coach of USA Basketball for the 2016 Olympics, according to a source with direct knowledge of the situation. A formal announcement is expected in the next 48 hours.
Coach K has led the Team USA for close to a decade, has a 62-1 record over that time and is coming off winning gold medals in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2012 London Olympics. He will coach the team in next year’s FIBA World Championship and the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.

Mason Plumlee: Duke big man steps up

via Fear the Sword

Duke University is one of the best basketball programs in the country, They have the coach of Team USA firmly at the helm. Lately, they have been criticized for their weak recruitment classes (relative to past outputs) but they have overturned that notion with Kyrie Irving. They still produce solid, NBA ready prospects that may be short on pizzazz but big on team contributions. Mason Plumlee, their main big man this season, is one such example.

per Fear the Sword:

Today, we present Mason Plumlee from Duke. Recently, mock drafts have seen Plumlee fall to around where the Cavs’ second selection lies, 19th overall. Having been in college for four seasons now, he is something of a known commodity. However, he took some major steps toward becoming an adequate NBA player this past season.

Plumlee is a solid 6’11.5″ in shoes, giving him the height to play either power forward or center. Throughout his early years at Duke, he was utilized at both positions, how...

The return of Andre Dawkins to Duke

There is a great article on GoDuke.com on the return of Andre Dawkins. Dawkins talks about his time away from the team last year in which he picked up a new sport, didn't participate in any basketball activities for the fall semester, and found his faith once again.
Here's a snippet, but go read the full article for an appreciation on the new player that Duke will have on their roster next season.

Andre Dawkins doesn’t remember the last time he played a basketball game with a clear head.
He knows it wasn’t his junior year at Duke, and he figures it was sometime prior to Dec. 5, 2009. That’s the date — now tattooed on the inside of his left wrist — that his older sister Lacey lost her life in a car accident while heading to Durham to see him in action as a freshman.

But after spending the past year away from the sport he has played for as long as he can remember, Dawkins says he is eager to return to the court with newfound clarity and purpose for one final season with the Blue De

Coach K could return to US team

Mike Krzyzewski is no longer ruling out a return as coach of the U.S. Olympic men's basketball team.

Though the Duke coach had repeatedly said he wouldn't be back after last summer, USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo says they spoke about a week ago and there has been ''movement'' toward a return.

Krzyzewski told Sports Illustrated in a story Saturday that ''there's a chance'' he would lead the United States in 2016 for an attempt at a third gold medal.

Krzyzewski took over as U.S. coach in 2005. The Americans won a bronze medal in the 2006 world basketball championship and haven't lost a game since.

Even as Krzyzewski kept saying he was finished, Colangelo hoped he would reconsider. Colangelo wants a coach in place before the team holds a minicamp in July and believes there will be a decision soon.

The Americans' next tournament is the 2014 World Cup of Basketball in Spain.

Duke's Coach K May Return to USA Basketball After All

Mike Krzyzewski said he was done. He'd had enough of taking time away from Duke to get a bunch of over-paid superstars to forgo their egos for the greater glory of the nation (you know, that place where millions of people live that make their careers and salaries possible). No more; after guiding them to the gold in last summer's Olympic games in London he was done coaching Team USA.

But hey--there's nothing like a little time to help change someone's mind, right?

We could have done this at Duke too...

Word is now that Mike Krzyzewski might not be stepping down from Team USA, but may actually return to coach the team for the 2014 World Championship and '16 Olympic games. This isn't just one of those crazy internet rumors either. Coach K himself has confirmed that he is indeed in talks to return.

This is good not to mention a dramatic reversal from his position last summer after

Kansas vs Duke for Tarik Black: highly recruited transfer

via Zagsblog

Kansas and Duke had eked out similar paths this season. Both had significant losses: Duke lost its top three scorers, Kansas lost its starting five. Both had superstar recruits: Jabari Parker for Duke and Andrew Wiggins for Kansas. Parker and Wiggins will undoubtedly be the focal point of their franchise, and both are wingmen. Kansas and Duke have good point guards, so the best complementary piece they need is a strong inside player. They cross paths again for Memphis transfer Tarik Black.
per Zagsblog

Memphis transfer Tarik Black is visiting Duke today and will visit Kansas on Tuesday, sources confirmed to SNY.tv.
Last week he visited Oregon and then went to Georgetown.
The 6-foot-9 Black met recently with Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, as well as Ohio State coach Thad Matta and San Diego State’s Steve Fisher.

Duke

What is it with Duke University surgeons…are they getting paid by the player?
Josh Hairston becomes the fourth Blue Devil to go under the knife since the end of the 2012-13 season. He joins Ryan Kelly, Seth Curry and Marshall Plumlee.
Hairston had surgery to repair ligament damage in his right thumb. He hurt the finger back in February during practice. He’s expected to miss six-eight weeks, which shouldn’t be a big deal for the soon-to-be senior.

Boone ready to continue Duke quarterback success

David Cutcliffes history with Peyton and Eli Manning has been well-documented. His status of quarterback guru was well-earned even before he got to Duke, but perhaps even more so since his arrival in 2008. Every Blue Devil quarterback he has coached has made it to the NFL. Thaddeus Lewis was picked up as an undrafted free agent and started a game for the Cleveland Browns last year, while Sean Renfree went in the seventh round of this years draft (to Atlanta).
So, uh, no pressure, Anthony Boone.
Not that the redshirt junior minds pressure. This is the same guy who had to come in for Renfree last year in the fourth quarter of a tie game at Wake Forest. He had seen spot duty before that, but nothing else. Oh, and it was Dukes first ACC game of the year. And Duke hadnt beaten Wake Forest since 2000.
It was raining, and he was having a hard time getting a grip on the ball. Wake Forest had all the momentum, having just come back to tie the game (Duke had led 20-10). He went on to complete 8-of-11 passes for 54 yard

Duke announces signing of recruit Jabari Parker

DURHAM, N.C.-- Top recruit Jabari Parker has signed his letter of intent to play at Duke.

The school announced Parker's signing Thursday -- more than four months after he picked the Blue Devils over Michigan State, Florida, Stanford and BYU during a nationally televised ceremony in Chicago.

Because that decision came in December after the conclusion of the fall signing period, Parker had to wait until the spring signing period began April 17 to make it official.

The 6-foot-8 forward is one of the most highly touted recruits in years, earning a top-five ranking from the four major recruiting services.

He's the first two-time Illinois Mr. Basketball winner and led Simeon Career Academy to four straight state championships.

Coach Mike Krzyzewski says his staff is "confident he will have a great career."

Jon Scheyer returns to Duke as special assistant

DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke is bringing back former basketball player Jon Scheyer as a special assistant.

Coach Mike Krzyzewski announced Scheyer's hiring Monday.

Scheyer was a captain on the Blue Devils' last national championship team in 2010.

His hiring fills a hole that opened after longtime Duke assistant Chris Collins left to take over at Northwestern. Nate James was promoted from special assistant to replace Collins on the staff, and Scheyer was brought in to replace James.

Krzyzewski calls Scheyer "one of the greatest young men to ever wear the Duke uniform."

This marks Scheyer's first coaching position. He played in the NBADL and overseas after concluding his Duke career.
