Baseball: Ga. Tech trips No. 1 UNC in 11 innings

ATLANTA Here are three things we learned from Georgia Tech's thrilling 9-8 victory (11 innings) over top-ranked North Carolina on Sunday.

1. Yellow Jackets head coach Danny Hall is a gamblin' man

With the score knotted at 8 in the 11th inning, and runners on first and second with zero outs, Georgia Tech's Zane Evans came to the plate with two scenarios at play both positive:

a) Attempt a bunt against new reliever Reilly Holvis, with the intent of advancing his teammates Kyle Wren (second base) and Brandon Thomas (first base) 90 feet on the base paths.

Or ...

b) Swing away at the plate, with the hopes of clinching Georgia Tech's series victory over the nation's No. 1 team.

"I didn't want to bunt there," recalls Hall, the Jackets skipper and third-base coach during the final stanza, explaining that a sacrifice bunt would probably lead to the Tar Heels intentionally walking Daniel Palka Georgia Tech's most complete hitter thus leaving the potential for a force p

A couple years ago Brandon Reed transferred into Georgia Tech, but never lived up to the expectations for the Yellow Jackets. After Reed completes summer school, he'll graduate, transfer to Arkansas State, and be eligible to play next season at his 3rd school of his collegiate career.
Brian Gregory called Reed "an integral part of this team over the last two years". Reed is the second Yellow Jacket to transfer since the season ended, joining Julian Royal.

Georgia Tech's Reed will transfer

Georgia Tech coach Brian Gregory says junior guard Brandon Reed plans to transfer to another school to complete his eligibility.

Gregory said Friday Reed will transfer after he graduates at the end of the summer term.

Reed, a strong 3-point shooter, started Georgia Tech's first 15 games and averaged 5.2 points for the season. He lost playing time when freshman Chris Bolden, another strong shooter, moved into Gregory's starting lineup.

Gregory says Reed, from Powder Springs, Ga., has been ''an integral part of this team over the last two years'' after transferring to Georgia Tech from Arkansas State.

Reed started 43 games in two seasons and averaged 6.4 points.

Ex-Ga Tech F Royal will transfer to George Mason

Former Georgia Tech forward Julian Royal is transferring to George Mason.

George Mason announced Friday that the 6-foot-8 Royal will sit out the upcoming season and then have two years of eligibility.

Royal said in March he was leaving Georgia Tech after averaging only 6.6 minutes and 1.7 points in 24 games as a sophomore. His playing time was limited due in part to the emergence of freshman Robert Carter Jr.

Royal averaged 4.4 points per game as a freshman during the 2011-12 season.

Georgia Tech is also losing junior guard Brandon Reed, who announced Friday that he plans to transfer to another school to complete his eligibility.

Castro takes a cue from Kuchar

It was a year ago that Georgia Tech alum Matt Kuchar won his first Players Championship.

Now another former Yellow Jacket is trying to do the same.

Roberto Castro entered Thursday having played the Players Stadium course at TPC Sawgrass just twice before, once in a pro-am for the Web.com Tour's Winn-Dixie Jacksonville Open and the other in a practice round Wednesday with Kuchar and Geoff Ogilvy.

But despite little experience on one of the Tour's toughest tests, Castro fired a 9-under 63 to tie the course record shared by Greg Norman (Round 1, 1994 Players) and Fred Couples (Round 3, 1992 Players), and grab hold of the early lead.

"I think every hole is hard out here," Castro said. "So you kind of just have to step up and hit a shot on every hole."

Castro recorded seven birdies and an eagle Thursday. He started his day on the back nine and was 2 under entering the par-5 16th. He striped a 4-iron into the green at No. 16 to set up the first of three straight birdies.

Baseball: Ga. Tech makes history with win over Ohio St.

COLUMBUS, Ohio Never underestimate the power of a feel-good homecoming.

On Tuesday night, the Georgia Tech baseball team launched its most crucial week of the season by rolling over Ohio State, 9-2.

As a bonus, the Yellow Jackets also extended a personal present to head coach and Ohio native Danny Hall, who collected his first victory inside the Buckeye State since leading Kent State to the NCAA regionals in 1993.

"This was a special game for me, just because I grew up here. Parents, my sister, I went to Miami of Ohio, a lot of friends here," said Hall, a onetime draft pick of the Oakland Athletics (1973) and Kent State's head coach from 1988-93. "Probably more than anything, it's a chance to coach in front of people who have meant a lot to me over the years."

The win had program significance, as well, marking Georgia Tech's first-ever trip to Ohio territory an illustrious history that dates back to 1900 and includes 26 NCAA tourney berths since 1985 alone.

ATLANTA Here are three things we learned from Georgia's 17-0 thumping of Georgia Tech on Tuesday, as the in-state clash attracted a spirited crowd of 18,240 to Turner Field:

1. Georgia may be the best 17-25 team in the country

How else to explain the Bulldogs' 17-run, 23-hit barrage against the Yellow Jackets, outside of random happenstance?

Granted, Georgia had only scored more than 13 runs once prior to Tuesday crushing UAB 14-2 on March 1 and Georgia Tech tapped No. 4 starter Jonathan King for just his fifth start of the year. But from the get-go, the Bulldogs were the superior club, pounding the Jackets with line-drive singles and aggressive baserunning.

The result: A rivalry game that was largely academic by the third inning, after Georgia rolled for five runs and a 7-0 overall lead.

The one-night disparity between the teams mushroomed from there, with seven Bulldogs accounting for multiple hits highlighted by Curt Powell (four hits) and Hunter Cole (four hits) combining for four RBI a

North Carolina softball does a human trampoline home run celebration (Video)

North Carolina’s softball team is taking home run celebrations to the next level.
After freshman shortstop Kristen Brown homered off Georgia Tech’s Hope Rush to lead off the bottom of the first inning of their game on Monday, she dove into a pile of her teammates who vaulted her into the air in some sort of human catapult/trampoline move. It was unlike any other celebration I had ever seen.
The celebration seems to be the norm for North Carolina. A few batters later, Constance Orr homered to make it 3-0, and she also jumped into the mosh pit. The only difference is Orr went in backwards, and was raised up by her teammates like she was sitting in a chair at a Bar Mitzvah party.
It’s all fun and games until someone dives through their teammates’ arms and lands flat on their face

ACC notes: 'Canes high on Duke

Georgia Tech football has gained a reputation for doing things a bit out of the box since Paul Johnson took over in 2008.

The Yellow Jackets proudly run the triple option offense in a manner like no other school, and Johnson is rather unique in his own right. This week, however, the program will again stray from the norm.

On Thursday, the Tech coaching staff and players will host more than 100 Georgia Tech International students for a clinic about the general rules of American-style football. The students will not only get a crash course on the game's rules, but will also run through the tunnel and onto Grant Field. They will finish the day mingling with the players at a barbecue.

"The goal of the clinic is to help the international students understand the game of football a little better," Johnson said. "American football is not as popular in other countries, so we are trying to make their experiences as a Georgia Tech student even better with the hopes of encouraging them to come out

Baseball: Ga. Tech upends No. 5 Virginia, 2-1

ATLANTA If Georgia Tech should rally for an ACC Coastal Division title, conference tournament championship, or even a sustained run in the NCAA tournament in the coming weeks, some might look to The Throw as the turning point for such wonder.

The same throw that, in hindsight, missed its intended mark.

In the seventh inning of a crucial series opener against No. 5 Virginia on Friday, and with the Yellow Jackets holding a tenuous 2-1 lead, Georgia Tech outfielder Kyle Wren the same Wren who's batting at nearly a .400 clip pulled off his personal play of the year, nailing the potential tying run at home plate, thanks to a no-bounce, letter-perfect toss from left field.

Upon receiving the bouncing single off the bat of Virginia hitter Nick Howard, Wren had little time to spare to preserve Tech's lead and Buck Farmer's pitching gem (complete game, one run allowed, 10 strikeouts). But the throw was so accurate, so impressive that no one wearing an orange jersey (UVa) could find fault with the ca

Mario Edwards losing weight, gaining attention

TALLAHASSEE Mario Edwards first season at Tallahassee started with disappointment and ended with excitement.
The disappointment? Edwards arrived at Florida State at 315 pounds a good number for a gap-eating defensive tackle, but way too much for an agile, pass-rushing defensive end.
The excitement? Making his first start in the ACC championship game and another in the Orange Bowl, helping the Seminoles win both games.
Edwards was considered by many analysts to be the nations No. 1 recruit in the class of 2012 or at least the top defensive player. But that was February. It didnt guarantee him very much in August, especially behind a group of veteran pass rushers like Brandon Jenkins, Bjoern Werner and Tank Carradine.
Anybody that comes in No. 1 is going to want to play, but then to be told that you need to sit back, learn the system, get your weight down, it hurt at the time but it was nobodys fault but myself, Edwards said.
Told that he would redshirt in August, just weeks before the season began, Edwards u

Baseball: Ga. Tech, Wake split twinbill in the rain

ATLANTA Georgia Tech's play during a home doubleheader against Wake Forest eerily mirrored the various weather patterns that hovered over Russ Chandler Stadium on Saturday.

Playing under blue skies during the opener, the Yellow Jackets were sharp and sometimes brilliant in their 8-1 victory. But in the nightcap, as the dark clouds formed and a steady rain fell, Georgia Tech was out of sync and, at times, downright ugly in its 8-6 defeat.

"We kind of stunk the joint up, to be honest," said Jackets coach Danny Hall after the twinbill split. "We were sloppy all over."

The sting of the nightcap loss and Cole Pitts' poor outing (three runs allowed in 2.1 innings) were momentary downers for Hall; but all in all, he was pleased with the Jackets' series victory over Wake.

Plus, he could derive some pleasure that Georgia Tech for all its foibles in the second game (season-high three errors) had the potential game-winning run at the plate (pinch-hitter Daniel Spingola, who struck
