NBA Draft Blog Interview with Colton Iverson

Players transferring schools at the college level often get a bad rap. The cases for switching schools are plenty, but most important among them is to find the situation that is the right fit for the player. Having the right environment, coach, and program can do wonders for a player’s game, and in some cases, can change their college career completely around. Colton Iverson is one of those cases. After three years playing inconsistent minutes for Minnesota, Iverson decided to transfer to Colorado State, and the results were great. Iverson helped lead the Rams to a second place finish in the Mountain West conference, and a berth in the NCAA Tournament, where the Rams were eliminated in the Round of 32 by eventual champion Louisville. Iverson now has his sights set on fulfilling his dream of the NBA.

For Iverson, he saw the effects the move had on his game while he had to sit out for a year. “During my redshirt year, I spent a lot of time wo...

AP Source: Furman hires Medved as basketball coach

Furman has hired Colorado State assistant Niko Medved as its new men's basketball coach.

A person familiar with the hire told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the school has not made an official announcement about its basketball coach. The person said Medved's hiring will be announced on Friday.

Medved spent the past six years at Colorado State. He was previously at Furman for seven seasons under Larry Davis. When Davis resigned in April 2006, Medved was the Paladins' interim coach for almost three weeks until Jeff Jackson was hired.

Jackson resigned last month after having just one winning season in seven years.

Medved was director of player development and recruiting coordinator under coach Larry Eustachy this season. The Rams went 26-8 and made the NCAA tournament.

Well, that same fan was in attendance for today's game against Louisville and he is clearly not pleased with Louisville's 13-point halftime lead:

Now THIS is what the NCAA Tournament is all about. One Colorado State fan was so pumped for his team’s second round game against Missouri yesterday that he actually wore a full ram suit to the arena.
Since the Rams won, we assume he’ll be back on Saturday for another go-around. Hopefully in between, he’ll get that thing washed.

CSU's Eustachy taking fourth school to NCAAs

Colorado State first-year coach Larry Eustachy is taking his fourth school to the NCAA tournament.

The Rams earned an at-large bid Sunday. They're the eighth seed in the Midwest and will face No. 9 seed Missouri at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Ky., on Thursday.

Eustachy took over from Tim Miles in April and led a senior-laden team to a 25-8 record.

Along the way, the Rams jumped into the rankings for the first time in 59 years and were runners-up to No. 15 New Mexico in the ultra-tough Mountain West Conference, which sent five teams to the NCAA tournament.

Eustachy also guided Southern Miss, Iowa State and Utah State to the NCAA tournament before coming to Fort Collins when Miles left for Nebraska.

Pity the poor Colorado State basketball fan who saw the March 9, 1954 Associated Press basketball Top 20 poll and figured “Swell! This should be a regular spot for us!”
The Rams are ranked for the first time since then, cracking the now-Top 25 with the No. 24 spot this week. It might be wise to celebrate now — Colorado State has a pair of tough Mountain West games against San Diego State and Air Force upcoming, and as their last foray into the poll indicates, these things don’t happen all the time in Fort Collins.
CSU was also in the next-to-last spot in its most recent poll appearance, checking in at No. 19. There were plenty of now-unlikely schools in that poll that showed just how significant urban and Catholic schools were to college basketball in that era: No. 3 Duquesne, No. 7 George Washington, No. 9 Holy Cross, No. 11 Seattle and No. 12 La Salle are names you would not expect to see ranked so highly today.

The top team in that poll is the one checking in behind Colorado Sta...

CSU adds women's soccer, drops water polo

Athletic director Jack Graham said Thursday that Colorado State will add women's soccer and compete in the Mountain West Conference beginning next fall.

Graham also said the school was eliminating women's water polo as an intercollegiate sport at the end of the season. The Rams began the water polo program in 2005 and play in the Western Water Polo Association.

With the addition of Colorado State, every member of the Mountain West now has a women's varsity soccer program. Said CSU President Tony Frank: ''This is a great step for women's sports at Colorado State.''

A search for a soccer coach is under way. The team will practice at an on-campus facility and play home games at a nearby soccer complex while a more permanent solution is figured out.

Eustachy, Colorado State making their mark

No visitor has walked out of Moby Arena a winner since Colorado State coach Larry Eustachy led Southern Miss to a victory at the Rams' ear-splitting, high-altitude auditorium back in November 2011.

The Rams went on to make an NCAA tournament run, after which coach Tim Miles left for Nebraska.

In stepped Eustachy, a seasoned coach who's taken three schools to the NCAA tournament and is in line for a fourth with the Rams on such a roll.

Colorado State's 66-61 win over UNLV on Saturday extended its school-record winning streak to 24 straight wins at home.

Now comes the hard part for these Rollin' Rams (15-3, 2-1 Mountain West) - taking that show on the road.

They visit No. 15 New Mexico (16-2, 3-0) on Wednesday night.

Lakers sign Ronnie Aguilar to training camp roster

With training camp opening in only five days, the Lakers are still looking to add bodies.

They signed Ronnie Aguilar, a 7-1, 250-pound center who starred at both Colorado State and Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Aguilar played in six games with the Bakersfield Jam of the NBA Development League during the 2011-12 season, averaging 2.2 points and 4.2 rebounds in 11.5 minutes.

As with any training camp invitee, Aguilar would probably be considered a longshot to make the Lakers' final roster.
