Offseason Intelligence: TCU Horned Frogs

Texas Christian should make some noise in the Big 12 this year with the return of seven starters on offense and 10 on defense. Head coach Gary Patterson has become one of the best coaches in the country, and TCU’s second year in the Big 12 should be better than finishing seventh in the conference (4-5 record) and 7-6 overall.

The Horned Frogs lost their last two games a year ago by a combined eight points. Oklahoma’s defense broke up a last-ditch pass in the end zone to escape with a 24-17 victory. Michigan State kicked a field goal to beat TCU with a minute left in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl.

	Offense

Casey Pachall (6-5, 226, Sr.) and Trevone Boykin (6-2, 215, Soph.) will battle for the quarterback job. Pachall was kicked off the team after just four games last year after being busted for DWI and smoking pot last fall. He went through rehabilitation and was allowed back into the team. During those four games, Pachall completed 66 percent of his passes for an average o...

TCU Football: Horned Frogs suspend DE Devonte Fields

It looks like last year’s Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year will have a difficult time vying for a repeat of the award this fall.

TCU has suspended defensive end Devonte Fields for the first two games of the season for violation of university and team policy, reports David Ubben of ESPN.

Fields will miss the season opener against LSU at Cowboys Stadium and the Horned Frogs' home opener against Southeastern Louisiana.

This isn’t good news for a team that returns 15 starters to the field. TCU is expected to have a bounce back year from its 7-6 campaign in 2012 with much of its young talent coming back.

Fields is supposed to be a huge contributor to these high expectations, as he was a quarterback’s nightmare with 18.5 tackles for loss and 10 sacks as a true freshman last season.

His impact off the edge will be missed big-time against an LSU offense that is sure to be much improved with offensive coordinator Cam Cameron on the sidelines.

TCU suspends DE Fields for 1st 2 games of season

TCU defensive end Devonte Fields has been suspended for the first two games of the 2013 season due to an unspecified violation of ''university and team policy.''

Coach Gary Patterson announced the suspension of the Big 12 defensive player of the year in a one-sentence statement Wednesday. Patterson didn't immediately return a message left on his cellphone. School officials had no further comments or details about the statement.

As a freshman last season, Fields had 18 1/2 tackles for losses and 10 quarterback sacks. Along with being voted the league's top defender, he was the Big 12 defensive newcomer of the year.

The Horned Frogs open Aug. 31 against LSU at Cowboys Stadium. They play Southeastern Louisiana at home the following week.

TCU suspends Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year for LSU opener

Photo: USA Today Sports

When TCU kicks off the 2013 season on the big stage in Cowboys Stadium against SEC West power LSU, they will do so without one of their top players. Sophomore defensive end Devonte Fields has been suspended for what the team is calling a violation of university and team policy.

Fields is actually being suspended for the first two games of TCU's 2013 season. Last year's Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and defensive rookie of the year led the Big 12 with 17.5 tackles for a loss and he was second in the conference in sacks with nine QB takedowns behind the line of scrimmage.

This is clearly a significant loss for the Horned Frogs to start the season against an LSU team that tends to play a physical style in the trenches. The loss of one of the top defensive players in the Big 12 figures to be tough to replace for a big game to start the season. The Horned Frogs should easily get by in game number two of the season without Fields, as TCU hosts ...

TCU star DE Fields suspended for first two games

TCU star defensive end Devonte Fields has been suspended for the first two games of the upcoming season.

Head coach Gary Patterson said in a statement that Fields was suspended for violating team and university policy.

The suspension means the Frogs will be without their best defensive player for their Aug. 31 game against LSU at Cowboys Stadium.

The 6-4, 240-pound Fields started all 13 games for TCU and was tabbed the Big 12 defensive freshman of the year by coaches and the Big 12 defensive player of the year by the media.

Fields, who also made several freshman All-America teams, had 53 tackles and 10 sacks. He led the Big 12 in tackles for loss per game and was third in sacks.

Gophers add series with TCU, drop FCS opponent in 2015

Amen, finally the Gophers are getting with the program here in the Big Ten as it was announced earlier today that the football team will be adding a home-and-home series with the TCU Horned Frogs. Fans can probably thank Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany and a long standing relationship between Jerry Kill and Gary Patterson for getting this one done. It didn't hurt that Kill stood up in Gary Patterson's wedding back in the day either.

ESPN.com is reporting that the games will take place in 2014 and 2015 with the Gophers visiting the new look Armon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth, TX first followed by the return trip to TCF Bank Stadium the next season.

Congrats, welcome to the world of the new look schedule there Minnesota. With this addition the Gophers took care of an opening in their 2014 schedule, one that includes such powerhouse programs as Eastern Illinois, Middle Tennessee, and San Jose State, and got to drop FCS opponent South Dakota for 2015.

MINNEAPOLIS The Gophers football team announced Tuesday that it will play a home-and-home series with Texas Christian University beginning in 2014.
The first of the two games will take place in Fort Worth, Texas, on Sept. 13, 2014. Minnesota will then host the Horned Frogs on Sept. 3, 2015 at TCF Bank Stadium. The home game for the Gophers replaces a previously scheduled game against South Dakota State.

Patterson not ready to name TCU's starting QB

The decision on who will be the starting quarterback for TCU when they play LSU Aug. 31 at Cowboys Stadium isn't coming anytime soon.

"It's going to be sometime in two-a-days," TCU head coach Gary Patterson said Tuesday.

Patterson will be choosing between senior Casey Pachall and sophomore Trevone Boykin. Pachall, the starter in 2011, missed most of last season after getting arrested and then entering a rehab facility. Boykin stepped in and started the final nine games for TCU, which went 7-6 in its first year of Big 12 play.

Pachall is now back in school and both quarterbacks participated in spring practice.

"Casey had to knock some rust off but obviously has command of the offense," Patterson said. "He was a little rough around the edges. He always had a Josh Boyce as his go-to guy and he's not there. Establishing who he's throwing to, what he's doing, getting him more familiar with the young receivers on the team."

Patterson has been pleased with how f

TCU's Maponga heading to NFL

The TCU Horned Frogs, who led the Big 12 in total defense, suffered a big loss Monday when defensive end Stansly Maponga elected to skip his senior season and head to the NFL Draft according to a source.

The 6-2, 265-pound Maponga missed two games for TCU because of an injury but was still selected to the All Big 12 First team by the coaches and the second team by the Associated Press.

Maponga had 22 tackles and 2 sacks for the Frogs.

Maponga started 12 games as a freshman and was an all-Mountain West Conference first teamer as a sophomore.

Despite the loss of Maponga, the Frogs appear to be loaded defensively. TCU will return nine of its 11 starters defensively and the Maponga and departing senior Kenny Cain are the only players on the two-deep defensively who arent slated to return this fall.

Last week TCU receiver Josh Boyce, who has already graduated, made the decision to forgo his senior season for a shot at the NFL.

QB Pachall finishes rehab, returns to TCU football

Former TCU quarterback Casey Pachall has completed substance abuse rehabilitation and returned to the team.

Coach Gary Patterson says Pachall took part in team meetings Sunday, a day before school resumed.

Pachall, a junior, threw for 948 yards with 10 touchdowns and one interception in TCU's first four games last season. He was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving and on Oct. 9 the school said Pachall was leaving TCU for treatment. A year ago, Pachall admitted to police that he smoked marijuana and failed a team-administered drug test.

Patterson said the door would be open for Pachall to return following rehab.

The Horned Frogs finished 7-6. Michigan State beat TCU 17-16 in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl.

TCU receiver Boyce headed for NFL Draft

The TCU Horned Frogs will be loaded with returning starters when they begin their second season of Big 12 play this fall.

One of those won't be receiver Josh Boyce.

Boyce, who is among the program's all-time leaders in receptions, receiving yards and touchdown receptions, has decided to declare for the NFL Draft and give up his final year of eligibility.

Boyce graduated from school in December.

"Josh Boyce, with his TCU degree in hand, will head to the NFL and forego his senior season of eligibility at TCU," the school said in a statement.

Along with the degree, Boyce is taking the school's all-time mark for receiving touchdowns with 22.

Boyce led the Frogs in receptions this season with 66, receiving yards (891) and touchdown catches (seven). He was also TCU's leading receiver as a sophomore while earning first team All-Mountain West Conference honors.
