Singleton to Pac-12

The Utah Utes have done a tremendous job recruiting in the state of Texas over the last several years, signing eight Lone Star prospects in 2010, three each in 2011 and 2012, before amping things back up and securing seven in the '13 class. It was Wednesday morning that Crosby (Tx) wideout Raelon Singleton got the '14 ball rolling...

First Round NFL Draft Grades: Carolina Panthers

PICK: Star Lotulelei, DT, UtahANALYSIS: I still don't get why the Jets passed on him, but Carolina must be thrilled. I knew it had to be Star when the pick was in within a few minutes. He's the best DT in the draft, yet he somehow fell all the way to Carolina at 14. The defensive tackle position has been a huge need in Carolina for years, and they've finally gotten a potentially elite DT. I really love this pick for Carolina.GRADE: A+

Panthers Select Utah DT Star Lotulelei (Rd.1, No.14)

With the 14th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Panthers select Utah DT Star Lotulelei. Blessed with the rare combination of top notch athleticism, good size and excellent natural strength, Lotulelei has the talent to be an impact play-maker in the NFL. Consistently quick off the ball, Star is able to get into gaps and can jolt and drive OL backwards to disrupt plays behind the LOS. He flashes the ability to anchor against OL run blocks, can toss blocker off him and has a quick burst to the ball carrier to finish the play. While he struggles to get free from double team run blocks, he is able to consistently anchor to clog up the middle on inside runs. On outside runs he gets started towards the ball quickly and has shocking speed for his size to chase play down in pursuit.

Utah Basketball Adds Three, Sends Three Packing

Basketball signing day tends to come and go with much less fanfare than that joyful day in February when the football team announces its signing class.
That could be the result of Utah’s struggles on the court as opposed to the years of success on the football field.
It could also be that there are essentially two signing periods for college basketball which splits the player haul.
So, on Wednesday, three players, Ahmad Fields, Kenneth Ogbe and Princeton Onwas, joined fellow commits Marko Kovacevic, Brandon Miller, Parker Van **** and Delon Wright in the 2013 recruiting class. Seven players signed to replace just four outgoing seniors. Brandon Miller plans to leave immediately on an LDS mission which could have allowed a current player to remain on the roster. Instead, Coach Krystkowiak decided to let three players go and open up the avenue for a late signee.
The University announced this week that Aaron Dotson, Glen Dean and Justin Seymour would transfer out of the program.

Utah's Star declines NYC draft-day invite

Utah's Star Lotulelei has declined an invitation to attend the NFL draft in New York.

Lotulelei issued a statement Wednesday through his agent saying he prefers to be in Utah surrounded by family and friends when his name is called. The defensive tackle was projected by some to be the top overall pick until a medical exam during the NFL combine raised questions about his heart function.

The state of Utah will still be represented at the draft. Former Brigham Young defensive end Ezekiel ''Ziggy'' Ansah plans to be in New York.

Ansah's draft stock has been rising quickly. The Ghana-born Ansah earned Most Outstanding Player honors for the South team at the Senior Bowl and is projected as a top five pick on many draft boards.

Drake hires Giacoletti as coach

Ray Giacoletti was fired by Utah just two seasons after reaching the regional semifinals of the NCAA tournament. The firing devastated Giacoletti, though he would up at mid-major power Gonzaga.

Six years later, Giacoletti has earned another shot at a head coaching job with Drake, a mid-major desperate to enjoy success at anywhere near the level of the Zags.

Drake announced Thursday it had hired the 50-year-old Giacoletti as its new basketball coach. He replaces Mark Phelps, who was fired two weeks ago after five seasons.

''This is a really big day for Drake athletics. We have a very bold vision. We want to be an institution that sustains competitive excellence in all of its programs,'' Drake athletic director Sandy Hatfield Clubb said. ''We searched the entire nation to find somebody with the experience, the passion and the desire to share in this vision.''

Giacoletti is perhaps best known for a three-year tenure at Utah that started great and ended badly. The Utes won 29 g

Utah Utes: The season is over

Well, the season ended last night for the Runnin’ Utes. Unfortunately, it was over at the beginning of the game. The Utes seemed to have run out of gas, losing the rebound battle and turning the ball over. The game last night was over in the first half, over at half time, and over when Utah forgot how to get a defensive rebound after cutting the Oregon lead to 8 points.
However, once again the Utes have given many fans reason to hope. They have seem glimmers of the potential for these young guys. Players like Olsen, Taylor, Tucker, and Loveridge have used this season to prove that they have what it takes to move the Utah basketball program from PAC-12 cellar dweller to top of the conference.
This season has also proven that Dr. Hill has actually hired the coach to take the Utes to the promise land. Since Larry Krsytkowiak took over the Utes have only improved, on and off the floor. In this season alone you can see the progress the Utes have made on the floor. The beginning and end o...

Utah Utes: The Utes are finally runnin’

I have always enjoyed roller coasters. They are the one type of ride I will make sure I ride when I go to a theme park. However, I am not a big fan of my favorite sports teams going through a roller coaster of a season. I enjoy exciting games, but I want my teams to simply be on a gradual trip upwards with constant improvement all while working towards a shot at the title.
The Ute’s basketball season has been a perfect example of a roller coaster season. The season started with a sharp upward trend. They were beating inferior teams. The Utes matched their total wins record from last season quickly. All was looking good. The climb up however climaxed with the close losses early on in the Pac-12 and then dropped like a rock with a huge loss to Stanford.
If you read Block U, you could easily see what this season has been like. With game reactions that had the Utes showing promise and others that said the team had given up. But somehow the team continued to fight and eventually respond,...

UA women's season ends in Pac-12 tourney

SEATTLE, Wash. In her final game at Arizona, senior Davellyn Whyte finished with 23 points, eight rebounds and six assists, but the 11th-seeded Wildcats were eliminated by sixth-seeded Utah 66-48 in the first round of the Pac-12 tournament Thursday night.

Whyte finished her standout career at UA with 2,059 points in 126 games. Junior Erica Barnes added nine points and eight rebounds for the Wildcats, who finished 12-18 overall and 4-15 in Pac-12 play.

Obviously, this is a tough loss, Arizona coach Niya Butts said. This was the third time playing Utah this year, and they were able to get the best of us. We just didnt have enough punch to get it done.

Utah (18-12, 9-10) shot lights-out in the first half, going 11 for 13 from 3 point range, but Whytes 17 points, five assists and four rebounds kept UA in the game with a 43-29 deficit at halftime.

The Utes cooled off in the second half as the Wildcats narrowed the margin to 10 after a 7-0 run, but UA couldn't close the gap the rest of the way.

Utah hires Erickson as coordinator

The Utah Utes have hired Dennis Erickson as co-offensive coordinator.

The team announced the move Monday.

The 65-year-old Erickson will share the coordinator title with 26-year-old Brian Johnson, a former Utah quarterback.

Erickson won national titles in 1989 and 1991 as coach at Miami. He has been a head coach at six universities - three of them Pac-12 Conference schools.

He is a three-time Pac-12 coach of the year, most recently with Arizona State in 2007 when he led the Sun Devils to a share of the conference title in his first season.

He also coached at Washington State and Oregon State and has a 179-96-1 record over 23 seasons.

The Utes are coming off a 5-7 season in which they finished a disappointing 3-6 in conference play.

No. 7 California 71, Utah 54

Reshanda Gray scored 19 points and sparked a big run in the second half before leaving with a left hamstring injury in No. 7 California's 71-54 win over Utah on Sunday.

Layshia Clarendon added 23 points and Afure Jemerigbe had 10 to help the Bears to their seventh consecutive win over the Utes. The victory also assures Cal (17-2, 7-1 Pac-12) of keeping at least a share of first place in the conference.

The Bears had trouble getting anything going against Utah's tight zone defense until Gray scored 11 points as part of a 17-4 run midway through the second half. Clarendon later scored six points over the final 4 1/2 minutes to help seal the win.

Michelle Plouffe scored 19 points and Paige Crozon added 13 for Utah (10-9, 1-7).

Cal was already without forward Gennifer Brandon, who injured her right foot in Friday's win over No. 20 Colorado. Guard Brittany Boyd also came up limping on the same play that Gray strained her hamstring on.

Gray, who also had eight rebounds, sat out the final 4:22 with

Video: BYU coach and Utah fan get into it after Utes win

If you watched Saturday night’s late night in-state rival game between the Utah Utes and the BYU Cougars, you know the scene towards the end of the game.
It was pretty hectic as the Utes won three times. The first win came after an incomplete pass that sealed the deal as the clock ran out. But after fans rushed the field, the play was reviewed and found to have one second left on the clock.
The second win came after the field was cleared and BYU had a chance for a last second field goal to send the game into overtime. The kick was no good, but fans rushed the field again before the officials had actually called the kick no good. So the crowd was penalized and BYU got another opportunity.
The third and final win came when BYU’s second chance field goal pinged off the crossbars and fell to the ground – no good. The fans were held back, and when the officials signaled game over, the fans rushed the field.
During the final rushing of the field, Cougars coach Bronco Mendenhall was being escorted off the fiel

BYU and Utah ends in the weirdest possible way

It’s the holy war between BYU and Utah came down to the 4th quarter kick. Of course in a rivalry game, anything can happen and it did. Utah rushed the field after a missed BYU kick and then the officials had to tell them that they had to re-kick the field goal in better field position after having it blocked. I know this sounds crazy but it really happened. So Brigham Young University had a closer kick to make with all the pressure on and not only did the kicker miss but he hit the goal post after the penalty. The Utah Utes actually stormed the field at the right time this time. A general rule for the fans is don’t ever storm the field. Bad things happen. There are cops. They take video. They are there to make sure you get in legal trouble. Stay in the stands and enjoy the victory.

Utah 41, N. Colorado 0

John White rushed for 119 yards, Jordan Wynn threw for two touchdowns and backup quarterback Travis Wilson ran for two more scores to power Utah over Northern Colorado 41-0 on Saturday night in both teams' season opener.

Wynn took some time to regain his form after missing the final nine games of the 2011 season due to a left shoulder injury. The Utes' first drive ended in an interception by Courtney Hall on Wynn's underthrown pass, but he recovered to complete 19 of 27 passes for 200 yards, including both TD passes to tight end Jake Murphy.

White, who set Utah's single-season rushing record last year, carried 24 times on his way to his ninth career 100-yard game.

Northern Colorado, which has lost 19 of its past 20 games and was 0-11 last season, never crossed midfield and managed only 114 total yards on 50 plays.
