No. 99 Wyoming Cowboys season preview

No. 99 Wyoming Cowboys (4-8) Coach Dave Christensen (fifth season, 22-27 at Wyoming and overall)Returning Starters: 16, 7 offense, 7 defense, 2 special teamsRecruiting Rank: 108Strength of Schedule: 85 The Cowboys had a shaky start to 2012, losing three straight to open the season before edging out last place Idaho in overtime 40-37. The season's biggest headlines came after a loss to Air Force on October 13, when Christensen got into an altercation with Falcons coach Troy Calhoun, as Christensen accused Calhoun of having his quarterback fake an injury in order to manipulate the clock. Junior quarterback Brett Smith returns after having a solid 2012, throwing for 2,832 yards with 27 touchdowns and only six interceptions. The Cowboys running game is in need of help, as sophomore running back D.J. May only ran for 369 yards and is the projected starter again this season. The receiving corps will suffer with the departure of Chris McNeill, but should see good productivity from se...

Wyoming’s Dave Christensen Is Stealing Motivational Techniques From With Leather

Wyoming coach Dave Christensen wants his team to be fast. How fast, you ask? So fast that he’s willing to spend all day in photoshop to illustrate it.The problem is that Dave isn’t exactly a photoshop wizard, so the 2013 Wyoming Cowboys will have to settle for being motivated by an extended gag from an Ashley Burns post. Ladies and gentlemen, behold, auteur Dave Christensen’s masterpiece FastNFurious 13: All Roads Lead To The Endzone.Questions:1. Why is Fast & Furious 13 coming out this fall? Isn’t part 6 being released in a few days?2. What happens in Fasts 7-12 to transition these guys from street racers to college football players? Is Fast 9 about Paul Walker going back to school?3. Who’s car is that? Dave’s?4. What play are they running where everybody has a football? Is Wyoming so fast that they’re doing all their plays at once?5. Who is that shadow character trying to stop them? Is he part of the car? You’re really losing me here, Dave. And I liked Tokyo Drift.[h/t t...

Column: I think I love Wyoming’s new field design

Sometimes I think Wyoming gets a bad wrap. To field a major college football program in the state of Wyoming takes a certain level of bravery, or perhaps stupidity, yet Wyoming has been doing it for a long time, first as a founding member of the WAC and later one of the original Mountain West Conference members. Sure, Wyoming may not be the most competitive program out there. Bill Clinton was in office the last time Wyoming had consecutive winning seasons. Over the last decade the casual college football fans probably know more about Wyoming’s uniforms than Jay Novacek, who went from the Wyoming Cowboys to the Dallas Cowboys during their 1990s Super Bowl years (after a stop in the Cardinals organization). You can credit that to ESPN’s humorous Bottom 10 feature during the college football season, which had a reserved spot for Wyoming’s uniforms.
Wyoming’s brown and yellow colors tend to yield some dull uniform options, but I actually think Wyoming has found a way to make them work. ...

Wyoming Football Takes Creativity to a New Level

The Wyoming Cowboys do not get much attention for the product that they put on the field very much--unless it is about a marquee team giving them a spanking. So while it may take a little too long to turn the team into something more noteworthy the school decided it can make its field news.

The 7220 feet signifies the height about sea level of the field which does make the Home of the Cowboys the highest field in NCAA Division I football.

So while that tidbit is cool the rest of this thing is a joke.

I get it. You are trying to create buzz, but much like the fields with different colored turf (yes, I'm talking to you Boise State) this is just plain silly.

The NCAA recently came down with a ruling to clear up some of the extraneous crap on football fields. I imagine that next up will be some restrictions involving end zones as well. Either that or we'll soon have bright yellow end zones at Michigan, orange ones at Oregon State, and a picture of Bevo at Texas.

I'm sure Oregon al

Wyoming Cowboys reveal ridiculous new football field plan

I have to say I like this a hell of a lot more than the different colored fields that teams keep creating. There’s nothing out of the ordinary on the playing field, but the end zone design is crazy. Definitely a unique touch to put on their stadium and it looks great. You have to love the old school font for the end zones as well as the mountain ranges. Here’s what their stadium/field looks like now:

Evaluating Jerron Granberry to Wyoming

Through the beginning of January, Wyoming's season couldn't have been going any better. They were 13-0 with impressive wins over Colorado, Illinois State, and Denver.

Then the Mountain West season began.

The Cowboys won just 5 of their final 17 regular season games and failed to advance deep into the postseason.

A large part of their problem was their inability to knock down 3s. They were last in conference-only games at less than 30%, and finished 262nd in the nation in 3-pt%. This was absolute death to an offense which took 42% of their shots from behind the arc, which was more than all but 18 teams in the nation.

The Cowboys also graduated Derrious Gilmore, who took nearly 100 more 3s than his next closest teammate, and actually made a solid number of them (36.7%).

	That spells trouble.

Luckily, head coach Larry Shyatt has a lot of connections in the college game. And one of them - former assistant Matthew Driscoll, who is now the head coach at No...

via Casper Star-Tribune:

Here is more from the report via the Wyoming Casper Star-Tribune.
LARAMIE — Wyoming men’s basketball star guard Luke Martinez admitted to causing serious bodily injury to the man he kicked in the face during a Dec. 30 fight outside of the Buckhorn Bar in downtown Laramie, according to an affidavit of probable cause.
Police arrested Martinez on one charge of aggravated battery and assault Jan. 13 for his involvement in multi-person fight that took place outside of the Buckhorn shortly after the Buckhorn’s closing time of 2:30 a.m. Martinez appeared in circuit court for arraignment Tuesday.
Wyoming player banned after bar fight

Wyoming coach Larry Shyatt has suspended one of the team's top scorers indefinitely after a bar fight.

University of Wyoming athletics officials announced Monday that charges were filed against Luke Martinez over the weekend due to an off-campus incident Dec. 30. University officials are not saying more about what led to the suspension.

Martinez is a 22-year-old senior who was averaging better than 14 points a game before he fractured a bone in his hand. Laramie police say a bar fight caused the injury.

They say Martinez was among several people who fought early on the morning of Dec. 30 at the Buckhorn Bar in Laramie.

Police initially said they didn't expect charges to be filed.

Wyoming Head Coach Dave Christensen Loses It After Loss to Air Force

Dave Christensen, head coach of the Wyoming Cowboys, went on a f-bomb-filled rant after a 28-27 loss the Air Force, last Saturday. Christensen was very unhappy with Air Force head coach Troy Calhoun, accusing him of not stopping his players from “faking” injuries to buy extra time at the end of the game.
After the game, Calhoun was the first to stick out his hand in sportsmanship and that’s when Christensen lost it. Christensen dropped 15 f-bombs in an impressive 0:37 seconds. He capped it all off with an Air Force-related diss, calling Calhoun “fly boy.” Well done, Christensen. Well done. I’m sure the Wyoming athletic director is going to love when he gets his hands on this video.

Uniform Madness: No. 3 Wyoming vs. No. 11 Northwestern alternate

Wyoming Region: Wyoming emerges as new region favorite

From 32 teams to 16, the 2012 Worst College Football Uniform Tournament is on to round two! We move to the Wyoming bracket, where the Wyoming Cowboys have taken the lead as the region favorite.

The Wyoming Cowboys are a perennial favorite when it comes to worst college football uniforms. Now they look to move one step closer to capturing their own region after moving to round two. Wyoming received 75.93% of the votes in round one, blowing away the disdain for Virginia Tech’s 2010 Pro Combat uniform combination.
Wyoming will look to hold off an upset bid from scrappy Northwestern, who stunned Rutgers in round one with 68.75% of the votes. Northwestern’s TCU-like uniforms are an 11 seed in this tournament, but show some great potential to make a Cinderella run through the bracket.

So who will take one step closer to the regional championship? Wyoming or Northwestern? Your vote will decide.
Vote below to determine which of these...

Flashback: #6 BYU 28, #20 Wyoming 25 (1996)

On this date, exactly 15 years ago, the Brigham Young Cougars faced the Wyoming Cowboys in the inaugural WAC Championship game. The game was an overtime classic. The game featured two high powered offenses. The Wyoming quarterback was leading the nation in total offense and passing yards per game. BYU got on the board first with a 30-yard field goal 5:56 into the game. The field goal was set up by Chris Ellison intercepting the first of three passes the Cougars would pick off in the game. BYU extended the lead to 13-0 at halftime with a Brian McKenzie touchdown run early in the second quarter, and another field goal with less than a minute to play in the half. While the score looked right for Cougar fans, the game didn’t feel right at halftime. BYU didn’t look that sharp on offense. Tight end Itula Mili left the game with a blown out knee. As the third quarter began, BYU lost control of the game. Wyoming got on the score board by returning a Steve Sarkisian fumble for a touchdown. T...
