2013 NBA Mock Draft, Take One

The first of my many NBA mock drafts to come. Its likely to change considerably once prospects begin individual workouts and with input from scouts and GMs. The real draft is June 27.

1. Cleveland: Ben McLemore, 6-4, SG, Kansas. Go with the player with the biggest upside (and healthiest knees), figure out the rest later. Dynamic scoring potential.

2. Orlando: Nerlens Noel, 6-11, PFC, Kentucky. Has a ways to go offensively, but possesses great length, leaping ability and timing on blocked shots. But about that ACL.

3. Washington: Otto Porter, 6-8, SF, Georgetown. Classic small forward who does everything well, particularly defend. Would be a natural alongside young backcourt.

4. Charlotte: Victor Oladipo, 6-4, SG, Indiana. Freakish athlete with a winning personality and desire to defend. Cant shoot, though.

5. Phoenix: Anthony Bennett, 6-7, PF, UNLV. Overpowered people in post in college, but will he be able to do same in NBA? Sort of a more-skilled version of Golden States Carl Landry.

6. New Orleans: A

Timberwolves focusing on 3-point shooters in draft

MINNEAPOLIS -- And then there were eight.
Eight teams that will pick in the 2013 NBA Draft before the Minnesota Timberwolves in a year where the incoming college talent is either spread out or sparse, depending on who you ask. Following a Draft Lottery bereft of any surprises, president of basketball operations Flip Saunders and the rest of the front office can tailor their evaluations to a now locked-in first-round spot, the No. 9 overall pick, and subsequent selections.
This year's class isn't perceived to contain the depth of those past, where names like Joakim Noah, Amare Stoudemire, Dirk Nowitizki and Tracy McGrady were available eight picks in. Immediate help via the draft will likely come to the Twin Cities in niche form.
But that's just fine, Saunders said, because the Timberwolves' needs are many.
"I think it's the opposite of thin," Saunders said of the talent pool he and his staff are about to delve into. "I think it's balanced. No, you don't have an Alonz

With another No. 1, Cavs hold offseason power

CLEVELAND -- With the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft, the Cleveland Cavaliers very well could select Nerlens Noel, the shot-blocking center out of Kentucky.

As you probably know, the Cavs won the draft lottery for the second time in three years Tuesday night.

As you also probably know, Noel has a serious upside. He stands 6-foot-11, he can really jump and he can throw it down in traffic. He once swatted 12 shots in a game and led the NCAA in blocks (4.42) during his lone college season.

Of course, theres also the matter of Noels knee.

He tore his ACL in late February and underwent surgery. No one knows when hell be ready to start his pro career, but early word is it wont be until at least December.

But who can say for sure? Chicagos Derrick Rose suffered the same injury and missed this entire season.

At the very least, Noel will miss summer league, training camp and the early part of 2013-14. Nor will Cavs general manager Chris Grant, coach Mike Brown and the rest of the staff get to watch No

Cavs win NBA Draft lottery

Let the speculation begin, as the Cleveland Cavaliers have won this year’s NBA Draft lottery for the second time in the last three years, and will select first in this upcoming draft. For the Cavaliers, the first pick isn’t a simple decision as it is many years. There are many candidates vying for the prize of being the first pick in the draft, and joining the likes of Dwight Howard and LeBron James. Some believe Nerlens Noel out of Kentucky will be the pick, but his torn ACL has the talented big man out until Christmas. Ben Mclemore out of Kansas is another talented player competing for the first pick, and may be a good fit for the Cavs, who are lacking an athletic swingman. The wildcard is Alex Len from Maryland, a 7-foot athletic center who has the potential to be something special in this league. Also, ask Shabazz Muhammad, and he’d tell you he should be the first pick as well. In any case, the Cavs have a big decision on their hands; botching the first pick can set your franchise back for years, ju

Early 2013 Big Ten/ACC Challenge predictions

When ESPN announced it's matchups for the Big Ten/ACC Challenge it was hard to contain the inner college basketball geek in me. I mean, getting matchups like UNC vs. Michigan State and Indiana vs. Syracuse is about as good as it gets for the challenge for it's 15th anniversary edition.

Those are just two examples of some great matchups and after the two conferences decided to go all "it's like kissing your sister" on us last year with a 6-6 tie. It kinda felt like this from our staff's favorite TV show... The League:

Yep, exactly Jim Delany and John Swofford... O.k., maybe more like the folks from ESPN who put this matchup together. You can suck it.

Ahhh, that was some pent up anger there, but anyway, back to the awesomeness that could be the 2013 B1G/ACC Challenge. If there's been a better set of matchups from top to bottom I'd love to know when. This is going to be a lot of fun for us college basketball geeks and in that vein it's time

Center Alex Len out 4-6 months after surgery

GAITHERSBURG, Md. -- Former Maryland center Alex Len will be sidelined up to six months after undergoing surgery on his left ankle in North Carolina.

Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Robert Anderson stabilized a stress fracture in Len's ankle. The problem that was diagnosed after the 7-foot-1 center left Maryland after his sophomore season to enter the NBA draft.

Len will be unable to participate in all on-court activities leading up to the June 27 draft, according to his agent, Michael Lelchitski.

Lelchitski says, "The tough part about Alex's injury is the timing."

Dr. Anderson says it is possible the injury would have healed on its own. But Len says, "I decided that surgery was the best long term option for my career."

Len, from the Ukraine, is projected to be a first-round pick.

Maryland’s Alex Len, Projected As A Lottery Pick, Out 4-6 Months After Ankle Surgery

umterps.com
Former Maryland center Alex Len, who declared for the NBA Draft just three weeks ago, had surgery for a stress fracture in his left ankle this week, according to the Baltimore Sun. He is expected to miss 4-6 months in recovery.
Len was projected as a lottery pick for the upcoming draft, set for June 27th, before the setback. Whether teams will still view the 7-foot Ukrainian national as worthy of such a high selection will be one of the more interesting story lines leading up to the event. Since the deadline has passed for Len to be able to return to school for his senior season, the timing is unfortunate for the former Terrapins star.
Len averaged 11.9 points and 7.8 rebounds for the Terps this past season.

ACC notebook: Terps' Petty moves back to linebacker

Shawn Petty was a scout team linebacker for Maryland when last season kicked off. A true freshman, the 6-foot-1, 235-pounder from Greenbelt, Md., was just trying to get into a groove in college and get accustomed to the differences in speed and intensity of the college game.

By November, he was the Terrapins starting quarterback.
Injuries to four other signal callers forced second-year coach Randy Edsall to not only take the redshirt off of Petty, but to move him to his old position in high school.

The Terps lost the four games Petty played, but his numbers werent as bad as one might expect. He completed 39 of his 84 attempts for 500 yards, six touchdowns and only two interceptions. He also ran for a score.

With Marylands quarterback situation improving, as C.J. Brown, Perry Hills and Caleb Rowe are once again healthy, Petty was moved back to linebacker this spring. He is currently listed as the third-team inside linebacker behind junior Cole Farrand and senior Bradley Johnson.

What he had to do is just

Despite mixed reviews, Maryland’s Alex Len joins NBA

via Rant Sports

This year’s NBA draft is projected to be one of the weakest. There are no stellar names that have ignited the public’s imagination. No one and done phenoms or future franchise cornerstones. There are also no clear choices for the top pick. Draft boards have continuously changed and differ from each website. Yet, there are a lot of serviceable players for every position.

Alex Len of Maryland has not been considered as ready for the next level. He has the size but observers note that he needs more skill. His college resume has not been impressive. Yet, there is room for him in some NBA teams. That may be reason enough.

He may have not been ready to make the jump to the next level, but Maryland Terrapins Alex Len has declared for the 2013 NBA Draft. Although Len could have benefited big time by returning for another season, he apparently did not think the same thing, making the dash to the NBA after two seasons with Maryland.

Mark Turgeon says Alex Len could be #1 NBA draft pick

via CSN Washington

News first emerged that Maryland’s 7’1 Ukranian sophomore center Alex Len will leave for the NBA Draft from Yahoo! Sports NBA reporter Adrian Wojnarowski. Maryland confirmed the news with a press release early Monday afternoon. The school announced that a press conference would be held Tuesday to formally announce his intentions to leave Maryland for the NBA Draft.

“I’m very grateful for the two years I’ve spent at Maryland and for everyone that has supported me during my time here,” Len said in a statement. “It’s been an honor to play here and I’ve learned so much. I want to thank Coach Turgeon and the coaching staff for believing in me and helping me grow as a player and a person. I also want to thank my teammates who were always there for me. We shared some great moments together. I’ve grown a lot, both on the court and off the court, over the past two years and I am looking forward to the next chapter of my life.”

Maryland center Alex Len to enter NBA draft

Maryland sophomore center Alex Len has decided to enter the NBA draft.

After an uneven freshman season with the Terrapins, the 7-foot-1 player averaged 11.9 points and 7.8 rebounds in 2012-13. He led the Atlantic Coast Conference with 78 blocked shots.

The Ukraine native is expected to be a top-10 pick in the June 27 draft.

Len says he's ''grown a lot over the past two years'' and is ''looking forward to the next chapter of my life.''

Coach Mark Turgeon says he's proud of what Len has accomplished, and the center has ''earned'' the opportunity to play in the NBA.

Len averaged of 9.7 points and seven rebounds at Maryland. He started 48 games, including 37 this season.

No. 12 Maryland 74, Michigan St. 49

Alyssa Thomas scored 28 points and Maryland defeated Michigan State 74-49 Monday night to advance to the round of 16 in the NCAA women's tournament for a second straight year.

The fourth-seeded Terrapins (26-7) will face top seed Connecticut in the Bridgeport Regional semifinals. Maryland reached the round of eight a year ago.

Thomas, a two-time Atlantic Coast Conference player of the year, had 18 at halftime to provide the Terrapins with an 11-point cushion. Her layup with 15 minutes left gave her 25 points and put Maryland up 46-30.

The 6-foot-2 junior went 12 for 18 from the floor, hitting both her 3-point tries and her only two foul shots. Thomas was pulled with 4:08 left, ending her bid to surpass her career high of 32 points.

Annalise Pickrel and Becca Mills each scored 12 for No. 5 seed Michigan State (25-9). The Spartans' two leading scorers, Klarissa Bell and Jasmine Thomas, combined for six points on 3-for-9 shooting.

After being eliminated in the first round at College Park a year ago,

Maryland baseball team unveils ridiculous new batting helmets

The Maryland Terrapins baseball team unveiled their new ridiculous batting helmets, which are clearly inspired by the football team’s helmets.

I wonder if they’re going to get uniforms just like the football team’s now too. With the new trend of ever-changing jerseys in college football and basketball, it looks like some of the other sports teams felt left out and wanted something special too.
