New York Knicks – Mock Draft Round-Up – May 22nd

Every week leading up to the NBA Draft, Turn On The Knicks will round up what a variety of mock drafts have the New York Knicks doing with the 24th overall pick. We will also include our commentary and any updates on where the team is expressing interest.

Sheridan Hoops – Shane Larkin, PG, Miami – “Larkin singlehandedly carried Miami this season as he had a Trey Burke-like impact on the Hurricanes. In New York, fans want a point man who can push the pace at times off the bench, which is something Larkin does well.”
Sports Illustrated – Rudy Gobert, C, France – “Gobert is impossibly long at 7-2 with a 7-8½ wingspan and a 9-7 standing reach, both combine records. He didn’t show much offensively at the combine, though, and several execs expressed concern about his slender frame. But the Knicks’ AARP frontcourt needs an infusion of youth, and Gobert’s defensive potential will be too good to pass up.”

Hurricanes Continue To Grow

The Miami Hurricanes have announced the signing of two newbies. Junior college transfer James Kelly signed a national letter of intent, as did Belgium point guard Manu LeComte.

The 6-8 Kelly averaged 18.3 points and 10.1 rebounds last season for Owens Community College. The Hurricanes are desperate for bodies underneath the rim and Kelly has one big body (245 pounds). However, he’s not a banger, preferring to face up, but is limited to his right hand.
Manu Lecomte is on the small side, barely 5-11. He’s a true point guard, who makes good, quick decisions with the ball. However, he’s going to need to add to his frame to withstand the punishment of ACC play.
If Jim Larranaga is lucky, he’ll only need Lecomte as a backup to Angel Rodriguez (the Canes are still waiting to see if the K-State transfer can play right away).
Along with Kelly, Lecomte and Rodriguez, the Hurricanes have a four-man recruiting class coming in, shooting guards Deandre Burnett and Davon Reed, small forward Derrick Griffin and po

JUCO Kelly joins Hurricanes basketball program

MIAMI -- Junior college transfer James Kelly signed a national letter of intent with the Miami Hurricanes, giving coach Jim Larranaga seven new players after winning the Atlantic Coast Conference title last season.

The 6-foot-8 Kelly averaged 18.3 points and 10.1 rebounds last season for Owens Community College in Toledo, Ohio and led his team to the NJCAA Division II tournament semifinals.

The Hurricanes on Tuesday also announced the signing of Manu LeComte, a 5-9 point guard from Belgium. LeComte recently played in the U18 European Championship, where he led his team in scoring at 12.0 points per game.

Miami earlier added former Kansas State starting point guard Angel Rodriguez, who last season helped the Wildcats to the Big 12 Championship, a 27-8 record and an appearance in the NCAA tournament. In two seasons at Kansas State, Rodriguez averaged 9.8 points and 4.2 assists per game.

Rodriguez transferred to be closer to his mother and two younger brothers, who live in his native Puerto Rico. He's se

Hurricanes basketball adds five to roster

Looking to keep the momentum going from their historic ACC championship run, the Miami Hurricanes infused talent, size and experience into their lineup Tuesday.

Coach Jim Larranaga announced the additions of dual-sport athletes Cornelius Elder and Derrick Griffin, as well as the signings of James Kelly, Manu LeComte, Angel Rodriguez.

"Our recruiting class in the spring has added a lot of versatility and much-needed skills to our program," Larranaga said. "We have graduated five outstanding seniors and lost Shane Larkin to the NBA Draft, so we have a lot of holes to fill."

Elder, ranked among the nation's top running backs at Ensworth High in Nashville, Tenn., also earned recognition from The Tennessean as 2013 boys basketball player of the year. The 5-11, 165-pound point guard averaged 20.2 points, 4.7 assists and 4.2 steals during his senior season.

"He has remarkable speed and quickness and competitive spirit," Larranaga said. "We'll look forward to when he can

Federal judge throws out Haith petition

MIAMI -- A federal judge has denied a petition by Missouri basketball coach Frank Haith, who wanted to subpoena Bank of America employees to determine if his checking account was illegally accessed by an unauthorized person during the NCAA's investigation of Miami athletics.

Haith was Miami's basketball coach from 2004-2011. He filed his case Monday, saying he wanted bank employees interviewed and any relevant evidence preserved after it was discovered last October that someone accessed his records and viewed items that the NCAA was specifically seeking copies of during its investigation.

But U.S. District Judge Robin Rosenbaum said Haith had no basis for such a request and that he "failed to satisfy the requirements" needed for a successful Rule 27 petition, a tool used by parties try to collect things such as testimony or evidence that could be used in a future lawsuit. Rosenbaum also ordered the case closed.

Haith's attorney, Michael Buckner, said he respected the ruling, though wa

Evaluating Angel Rodriguez to Miami

Miami's losses are staggering. They lost five seniors, PG Shane Larkin and a reserve freshman (Bishop Daniels). All told that adds up to 82% of their minutes. Couple that with a stronger ACC and the Hurricanes might be epically bad. Like 1971-1985 bad. Luckily, the program got a shot in the arm when K-State sophomore Angel Rodriguez pledged to the Canes today. First #Canes picture of the newest @caneshoops point guard: Angel Rodriguez. #WelcomeToTheU instagram.com/p/Yx44gymvQ5/ — Miami Hurricanes (@hurricanesports) May 1, 2013 Can he play? Who cares - he's a warm body that played high major basketball, which makes him an instant starter. But, in reality, he can play, and he's pretty much the perfect bridge from no leaders to new leaders. This assumes he gets a waiver to play immediately, for which he'll be applying. The diminutive point guard, who comes from Krop High School in Miami-Dade County, would immediately step in for Shane Larkin. He aver...

Miami's Larkin will enter NBA draft

Miami guard Shane Larkin says he will forgo his final two years of college eligibility and enter the NBA draft.

Larkin averaged 14.5 points and 4.6 assists this season for the Hurricanes, who won 29 games, climbed as high as No. 2 in The Associated Press Top 25 and reached the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament.

Larkin's decision means Miami will be without its top six scorers from this season when it takes the court next fall. Larkin led the Hurricanes in scoring. The next five highest scorers for Miami were all seniors.

Larkin is the son of Baseball Hall of Famer Barry Larkin, and had until the end of Sunday to officially enter the draft.

The Hurricanes were 48-20 with Larkin in their lineup.

Dad: Larkin leaning toward NBA

Miami Hurricanes sophomore Shane Larkin is leaning strongly toward turning pro and will declare for the NBA draft unless he has a last-minute change of heart, his father said.

Baseball Hall of Famer Barry Larkin said he spoke Friday with his son, who plans to announce his decision at a news conference Sunday.

''All indications are he's going into the draft, unless he has an epiphany,'' the elder Larkin said. ''All of the information he has received is that this is the time for him to come out. He's not 100-percent committed. He wants to talk to the coaches first. But if nothing changes, he's going to declare for the draft.''

Larkin blossomed this past season at point guard, helping attract sellout crowds and national attention for a Hurricanes program perennially overshadowed by college football and South Florida's four professional sports teams.

Miami won the Atlantic Coast Conference and the league tournament, both for the first time. Larkin finished sixth

Should he stay or should he go: Shane Larkin

The choice to enter the draft or stay at school can be easy or hard. For some guys, they are just looking to jump ship and join the NBA. For others, the decision can take weeks. Miami Hurricanes point guard Shane Larkin is trying to make the choice, but his time is running out. To me, the answer is obvious. via Associated Press The U had a great season no doubt, but this year’s team will be nothing like last year. The Hurricanes had one of the oldest team’s this year and almost all of the stars on the team have graduated and moved on. As a point guard, the guys surrounding you play a huge part in your success. If Larkin stayed, he would have to develop a relationship with a whole starting lineup and wouldn’t have that familiarity that most guys develop after playing multiple seasons together. I think this and the fact that Miami will probably come back to earth next year makes the decision to leave even easier. And if Larkin is still not convinced, the draft’s No. 1 point guard an...

Hurricanes basketball gets own special day

After a special season in which the Miami Hurricanes won both the ACC regular-season and tournament titles, the accolades rolled in.

Point guard Shane Larkin was the coaches' pick for ACC Player of the Year, and Jim Larranaga won a slew of Coach of the Year honors.

Now the team gets its own day.

Two resolutions were read and presented on the floor of the Florida House of Representatives and the state senate, recognizing April 18, 2013 as "University of Miami Hurricanes Men's Basketball Team Day."

The House Resolution HB 9089 is sponsored by Rep. Eddy Gonzalez, and Senate Resolution SB 1858 is sponsored by Sen. Oscar Braynon.

Miami Hurricanes Spring Game: Gino Toretta to Andre Johnson for the Touchdown! Wait--What?!?!

Marshawn Lynch went beast mode back when Cal had their spring game. That must have inspired the Miami Hurricanes to do the same during theirs because last Saturday their game featured a pretty special alumin touchdown as well--from a Heisman trophy winner to a future first round Hall of Famer and perennial All-Pro wide receiver.

I'm talking about former Hurricanes Gino Toretta and Andre Johnson!

Not to be let out of the love-fest is the center on the play, Brett Romberg, a former Remington Award winner (the best center in the country).

Jim Larranaga wins Naismith award

Though the Miami Hurricanes basketball team was ousted from the NCAA tournament in the Sweet 16, it was still their best season since joining the ACC.

And now the team -- or the coach, rather -- has an accolade in recognition of that success. Head coach Jim Larranaga was given the Naismith Coach of the Year award on Sunday in Atlanta.

It is humbling and really an honor to receive a national award like this, especially, in the name of the founder of our game, Dr. James Naismith, Larranaga said in a release. I greatly appreciate the recognition by the Atlanta Tipoff Club, its membership and its voting academy to select me because there are so many great college coaches in the country. This really is a team award that represents a lot of hard work by my staff and our players.

Coach Larraaga led the Hurricanes resurgence to tremendous heights, and clearly has made the program a key force in the ACC in just two years, which is no easy feat, Eric Oberman, executive director of the Atlanta Tipoff Club, said in a
