Web Run: ACC Atlantic Contender?

Aside from the fact that the NC State Wolfpack are making a transition from the Tom O’Brien era to the Dave Doeren era, the biggest question that surrounds the 2013 edition of the ‘Pack is how the void that’s been left with the departure of QB Mike Glennon to the NFL will be filled.

QB Mitchell decides on North Carolina State

Former Arkansas quarterback Brandon Mitchell says he is transferring to North Carolina State to play his final season.

Mitchell was granted his release from the Razorbacks earlier this month, following a spring competition for the starting position that ended with the senior listed as the second-team quarterback to sophomore Brandon Allen.

The 6-foot-4, 239-pound Mitchell is on track to earn his degree this summer and will use the NCAA graduate-transfer exception to play immediately for the Wolfpack next season.

He visited several schools over the last two weeks before settling on North Carolina State, which was 7-6 last season.

Mitchell served as Tyler Wilson's backup two seasons ago, finishing 22-of-32 passing for 271 yards in limited action. He moved to receiver last summer in order to receiver more playing time.

Mike Glennon Impresses Greg Schiano, Who Recruited Rookie Quarterback in High School

Josh Freeman will be looking up and over his shoulder during the preseason.
That’s because there’s a 6-foot-7 rookie gunning for the Tampa Bay quarterback’s job. And from what Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano has to say, Mike Glennon has a chance to take Freeman’s job.
Schiano told National Football Post that Glennon “can play quickly” if the Buccaneers need him.
“But our situation will be only if he’s needed,” Schiano said. “Or if he wins the job. Look, I’m not against that. We have a starting quarterback. It’s not like we’re looking to find a starter. But competition is competition. Mike Glennon is a fierce competitor. I knew that when he was coming out of high school. Now being able to work with him a little, you can see it on the practice field.”
When Schiano was still head coach of Rutgers, he attempted to recruit Glennon. Glennon wanted to play in the ACC, not the Big East, so the tall signal caller went to NC State. Glennon was the Wolfpack quarterback that pushed Russell

Mike Glennon can win playing time with Bucs

Josh Freeman is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' starting quarterback right now. Let's get that straight before we go any further in discussing the possibility that rookie Mike Glennon could win the job. Tampa Bay isn't like other places like Jacksonville up the road or Cleveland where quarterback battles are as open as they can possibly get. The Buccaneers aren't looking for a guy to beat out Freeman.

Still, Tampa Bay isn't an open and shut book either. Josh Freeman has had a rocky, up-and-down career, and he's left the door ajar for someone to step in and win the Bucs' starting job.

Head coach Greg Schiano seems to have a grasp of that reality, telling Dan Pompei of the National Football Post that Glennon will be able to take over for Freeman if need be, even opening the possibility that Glennon could win playing time moving forward.

"But our situation will be only if he’s needed," Schiano told Pompei. "Or if he wins the job. Look, I’m not...

Projected 2013-14 Lineup: NC State Wolfpack

Mark Gottfried has his work cut out for him in 2013-14. He loses his entire starting five and as of now only has nine scholarship players. There are so many unknowns, it’s tough to settle on one starting lineup. I would say NC State’s lineup will be in constant flux, because there are a handful of players capable of playing multiple positions.
GONE BABY GONE: Just about everybody…Lorenzo Brown, C.J. Leslie, Richard Howell, Scott Wood, Rodney Purvis, Jay Lewis
PROJECTED STARTING LINEUP
PG – Tyler Lewis (SO), 5-11/165
SG – Anthony “Cat” Barber (FR), 6-2/165
SG – Ralston Turner (JR), 6-6/210
PF – T.J. Warren (SO), 6-8/235
C – BeeJay Anya (FR), 6-9/275
I’ll be straight up, I like Cat Barber better than Tyler Lewis. Don’t get me wrong, I think Lewis is going to have a great career in Raleigh. He’s a four-year guy, capable of being a three-year starter. However, Barber reminds me of a taller Ty Lawson. Of course I said that about my sandwich the other day, but this time I mean it.
He’s s

N.C. State's Turner discusses the art of the stolen base

North Carolina State sophomore shortstop Trea Turner is fast.

But there are a lot of fast baseball players who cant steal bases the way Turner does. Any time hes on the base paths, it almost feels inevitable that hell steal at least one. He causes opposing pitchers to worry about him constantly, and with good reason.

As a freshman, Turner stole 57 bases on 61 attempts (93.4 percent). His 57 steals were more than 158 teams had combined. This year, hes 23-of-28 (82.1 percent) and hed likely have more - or even a higher percentage - if not for an ankle injury that caused him to miss nearly three weeks. N.C. State is 34-5 with Turner in the lineup and 5-6 without him.

At first, he waited for his coaches to tell him when to try to steal.

Last year, I didnt know I got to go whenever I wanted so I kept relying on them for about 20 or so steals. Then (head coach Elliott) Avent started yelling at me and asking me why Im not going. Now, its basically I can go whenever I want, Turner said.

Theres a few times th

NC State's Rodon stifles FSU in top 10 showdown

RALEIGH -- No. 5 North Carolina State (39-11, 16-8 ACC) just continues to get wins, no matter how elusive those wins seem during the course of each game. The Wolfpack has won 21 of their last 22, dropping just one gane to top-ranked North Carolina two weeks ago. The latest came Saturday in a 3-1 grinder over No. 9 Florida State (40-10, 16-9 ACC), and it gave ace Carlos Rodon his seventh win of the year (hes now 7-2).
Rodons resurgence has been somewhat concurrent with N.C. States. The Wolfpack started out this season 18-10 and 4-7 in the ACC after a loss in the second game of a three-game set against Maryland. On that same day -- March 30 -- Florida State was 24-3, 8-3 in the ACC and seemed to have control of the Atlantic Division.
Now, N.C. State won Game 1 of the three-game series (Game 2 is Sunday) against Florida State and has taken a half-game lead in the Atlantic with just one more ACC series left for each team.

Pitt Lands Former Wolfpack Recruit

Now we have a reason to care about Pittsburgh vs. North Carolina State…not that I personally needed a reason.
Joseph Uchebo, a 6-10 junior college player, has committed to play for Jamie Dixon and the Panthers. The Enugu, Nigeria native was originally committed to Sidney Lowe (I miss those red jackers) and NC State, but later backed out. Why? Some argued he didn’t have the grades to qualify, but Uchebo himself pointed the finger at Mark Gottfried back in 2011.
From Riddick & Reynolds:

“The first time the new staff called me, I got the feeling they didn’t want me at NC State,” Uchebo explained. “Coach Gottfried was working on bringing in new players, and it was like he didn’t want me. It wasn’t the same feeling Coach (Sidney) Lowe brought to me.

Uchebo ended up going to Chipola (Fla.) Junior College, where he averaged a solid 12 points and 12 rebounds per game as a rookie. However, last year he sat out the entire season with a knee injury.
That injury probably scared some teams away fro

RALEIGH, N.C. -- New N.C. State head coach Dave Doeren has already injected the Wolfpack with a sense of energy and enthusiasm that wasnt there last year. His youthful approach has been refreshing, as has his up-tempo spread offense, both of which will be on display on Saturday for the Kay Yow Spring Game at Carter-Finley Stadium.
But sometimes change can be refreshing on its own.

Doeren, who coached Northern Illinois to the Orange Bowl last year, took over for Tom OBrien in December. OBrien had taken N.C. State to bowl games in four of his final five seasons, and the team entered 2012 with high expectations (both inside and outside the program). But 2012 ended in a disappointing 7-6 record.

Under OBrien, N.C. State was perpetually a team that could beat almost anyone and lose to almost anyone. And that unpredictability became too predictable. Toward the end of last season, the expectations they had for themselves and what last season could have been had started to weigh them down. With a new head coach and

Evaluating Rodney Purvis to UConn

When Mark Gottfried took over at NC State he scrambled to keep together the recruiting class and brought in Thomas de Thaey. But the next class was his first real one. And the first recruit who verbally committed was Rodney Purvis, a consensus 5* hometown kid. A month later, two more highly rated players committed to the Wolfpack and suddenly the excitement was back in the fan base.

Entering this season the media and the coaches pegged NC State as the preseason favorites and there was swagger back in Raleigh. A huge recruiting class. Potential bragging rights. Things were looking up.

But the magic never materialized during the season, and the Pack limped to a tie for 4th place in the ACC and got bounced in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

And now Gottfried's first star recruit is leaving for the University of Connecticut.

UConn was his runner up out of high school, so the choice shouldn't be a surprise.

So what should UConn fans expect?

	For ...

Jones: Leslie's early exit good for 'Pack, too

RALEIGH, N.C. The C.J. Leslie era is over at North Carolina State, although it's hard to pinpoint when it began.

Leslie played in 99 games for the Wolfpack, but only approached his talent base on a few occasions. When Leslie was at his best, in flashes, it was quite breathtaking.

At 6-foot-9 and 200 pounds, the long-armed and supremely athletic Leslie should have been a rebounding machine in college, but he wasn't. He averaged 7.3 boards per contest for his career; but keep in mind, Leslie was at 7.2 as a freshman and 7.4 as a junior.

He was supposed to be a great scorer, an inside-outside player with enough of a handle to take the ball to the rack. Some observers described Leslie as Kevin Durant-like when in high school, but he wasnt any of those things, either. Not even close.

Leslie averaged 13.7 points per game for his career, but he was at 11 as a freshman and 15.1 this season. Leslie's blocks numbers stayed the same and his assist figures increased to just 1.5 per outing as a junior. Th

Brown bolting Wolfpack for draft; more to come?

RALEIGH, N.C. On Thursday, Lorenzo Brown confirmed what most observers close to North Carolina State's basketball program believed would happen for some time: He is leaving school a year early to chase the dream of playing in the NBA.

Brown, who averaged 12.4 points and handed out an ACC-best 7.4 assists per game this season, is projected as a late first-round pick at best by several mock drafts, including Draftexpress.com. And barring the unforeseen, he will be on an NBA roster next season. The 6-foot-5 junior point guard would have made most rosters this season. He is that good.

"I've talked to a lot of different guys in the NBA, a lot of GMs and presidents and key personnel and I think most everybodys confident he can be a first-round draft pick," N.C. State coach Mark Gottfried said Thursday.

"I think theres a general sense with Lorenzo he's going to have a great future now you have to remember he's only played that position exclusively really for two years ... so

NC State fires Kellie Harper after 4 seasons

North Carolina State has fired women's basketball coach Kellie Harper after four seasons.

The school said Tuesday that the 35-year-old coach wouldn't return after missing the NCAA tournament for the third straight year. Harper, a former player under Tennessee's Pat Summitt, was the successor to late Hall of Famer Kay Yow, who died in 2009 after a long fight with cancer.

Harper's first team went 20-14, made a surprise run to the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament final and reached the NCAAs in 2010. But that season ended up being the high point.

The Wolfpack never reached 20 wins again, going just 50-50 with a 16-32 mark in ACC play and two trips to the WNIT in the past three seasons.
