Looking to regain its mojo, UNC blasted Miami in ACC tourney

DURHAM, N.C. -- The ACC has been one of the most competitive leagues in the country, if not the most competitive, with all eight of its ACC tournament teams ranking in the top 20 of the RPI. But in No. 1 seed North Carolinas pool, seedings are holding so far.

But theres more at stake for the Tar Heels than just an ACC championship, which is probably why they kept the rotation intact by pitching ace Kent Emanuel (9-3) against No. 8 seed Miami (35-22) in a 10-0 mercy-rule win on Thursday.

North Carolina (49-8) is just a game behind Vanderbilt for the best record in the nation, and a good ACC tournament run might just get UNC the No. 1 overall seed. Either way, North Carolina needed to get back on track after losing four of its final seven games against ACC opponents.

I just wanted to play well, and I thought we play well. Our kids were ready. I challenged them before the game ... its been pretty obvious the teams that have played here so far in (the ACC) tournament and have won have really looked like the

Tar Heels land Theo Pinson for 2014

via CBS Sports

It’s never too early. That’s the motto of the top college recruiters. Losing out on the top High School Recruit, North Carolina wastes no time moping and gets ready to build a class for next season. Theo Pinson, a highly ranked recruit, is set to don Carolina blue.

per CBS Sports:

When we spoke with Theo Pinson in late April, he said he wanted to trim his list soon. And then suddenly last Saturday, reports surfaced that Pinson was cutting his list to five — and ready to make a decision.

That decision came on Wednesday afternoon: Pinson is headed to North Carolina.

The 6-foot-5 wing from Wesleyan Christian Academy (NC) chose the Tar Heels over primary competition from Indiana, although Louisville, Georgetown and Duke were also in his final five.

Being an in-state prospect, the pull to stay home was too strong for Pinson. He’s only a short drive to Chapel Hill, and he took several unofficial visits to the Tar Heels’ campus. With people constantly in h

Theo Pinson Will Decide Wednesday

North Carolina fans are hoping the disappointment from losing Andrew Wiggins last week can be washing away by Theo Pinson.
The 6th rated small forward in the 2014 class is expected to make his decision this Wednesday.
One of the better athletes coming out, Pinson is a slasher, who loves to run in transition. He’s an excellent rebounder and defender thanks to a 6-10 wingspan on his 6-5 frame.
Pinson is deciding between the Tar Heels, along with Indiana, Georgetown, Louisville and Duke, although everyone says the Blue Devils are off the list.
Roy Williams already has one small forward signed for 2014, Just Jackson, the 3rd rated SF. However, Pinson would probably be a better fit at the two spot, which would be perfect, because as of now, the only two-guard returning in 2014 is J.P. Tokoto.
Still, word is that Indiana and Tom Cream are the favorite…of course, go ask Florida State what it’s like to be the favorite to land a recruit.

UNC ends regular season with loss to UVa

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. Baseball can cruel sometimes.

And when two teams are as evenly matched as No. 7 Virginia (45-8, 22-8 ACC) and No. 2 North Carolina (47-8, 21-7 ACC), games can sometimes come down to just one bad hop.

One ball that doesnt fly quite as far as it seems like it should.

One small fielding mistake.

One base-running mistake.

And thats how it ended on Saturday, as Virginia took the game and the series from North Carolina with an 8-7 win in 11 innings. The game ended as bizarrely as one could imagine: Down 8-4 in the bottom of the 11th, North Carolina rallied and cut the lead to 8-6 with just one out, after Colin Moran knocked in a run.

UNC head coach Mike Fox brought in freshman Michael Massardo to pinch-run for Moran.

Then freshman Skye Bolt came to the plate, one of UNC's best hitters, with two on base. He blasted a pitch into deep left center that looked like a sure home run. Everyone thought it was gone. Bolt did. Fox did. Moran did. And unfortunately for UNC, so did Massardo.

UNC baseball captures first ACC title in 23 years

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. No. 2 North Carolina needed just one win over No. 7 Virginia out of a three-game series to clinch the ACC regular-season title and the No. 1 seed in the ACC Tournament. Virginia took Game 1, but UNC came back from a 5-2 deficit to win 8-5 on Friday night in Game 2 of the series.

It is UNCs first ACC baseball title since 1990.

But Virginias stellar play made it seem like the Tar Heels were going to have to wait until Saturday to claim that title. Or maybe that Virginia was just going to go ahead and take that title back to Charlottesville.

Five innings into Game 2, Virginia held a 4-2 lead and UNC just could not get anything going offensively. The Tar Heels (48-7, 22-6 ACC) had chances in the early innings, but just couldnt muster a rally. It seemed like every ball the Tar Heels hit was right at a waiting Cavalier.

UNC head coach Mike Fox kept writing hard-hit ball on his lineup card, and after he had done that around 15 times, he looked up at the scoreboard and his team only had seve

Fox, Tar Heels not bothered by recent slide

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Normally, it wouldnt be considered a big deal for the No. 2 team in the country to lose a series opener to the No. 7 team in the country. North Carolina (46-6, 20-5 ACC) dropped a 10-4 decision at home to Virginia (43-8, 20-7), and the Cavaliers outplayed the Tar Heels in nearly every aspect of the game.

Back when North Carolina got out to a 39-2 start to the season, head coach Mike Fox warned that a bad stretch was coming. Its baseball. Its inevitable. The Tar Heels had yet to hit the toughest portion of their schedule at that point in the year, and now theyve faced four of the top 20-30 teams in the country over the past 3 12 weeks.

They posted a 2-5 record in those games.

Dont tell Fox that his team is in a slide, though.

Oh, weve lost three out of five? Oh. See, Im focusing on the fact that were 46-7, Fox said with a grin. We werent going to continue just to win games at this clip, no matter what. Do we want it to be right now? No. Had I rather it been in February or March? Yea

Baseball: Ga. Tech trips No. 1 UNC in 11 innings

ATLANTA Here are three things we learned from Georgia Tech's thrilling 9-8 victory (11 innings) over top-ranked North Carolina on Sunday.

1. Yellow Jackets head coach Danny Hall is a gamblin' man

With the score knotted at 8 in the 11th inning, and runners on first and second with zero outs, Georgia Tech's Zane Evans came to the plate with two scenarios at play both positive:

a) Attempt a bunt against new reliever Reilly Holvis, with the intent of advancing his teammates Kyle Wren (second base) and Brandon Thomas (first base) 90 feet on the base paths.

Or ...

b) Swing away at the plate, with the hopes of clinching Georgia Tech's series victory over the nation's No. 1 team.

"I didn't want to bunt there," recalls Hall, the Jackets skipper and third-base coach during the final stanza, explaining that a sacrifice bunt would probably lead to the Tar Heels intentionally walking Daniel Palka Georgia Tech's most complete hitter thus leaving the potential for a force p

UNC's Moran driving offense for No. 1 Tar Heels

Colin Moran has grown from the top freshman in the country to one of the nation's most dangerous hitters and a top draft prospect for No. 1 North Carolina.

The junior has the chance to become the fourth player in NCAA history to lead the nation in runs scored and RBIs. He entered the week first in RBIs and tied for the lead in runs scored, while ranking among the leaders in most major hitting categories.

Moran has helped give UNC the nation's top-scoring offense and kept them on course to return to the College World Series for the sixth time in eight seasons. It's also solidified Moran's standing as one of the top talents in next month's draft.

''I've just felt comfortable and gotten into a groove,'' Moran said. ''I think it's a lot of credit to the guys around me for getting on base a lot. I like to hit with guys on base. There's been a lot of situations where guys have to come at me with strikes because the bases are loaded and the guys ahead of me

ACC notebook: UNC hands out Coastal champs rings

North Carolina finished tied for first in the Coastal Division and would have won the tiebreakers to earn the right to play in the ACC Championship game.

Unfortunately for the Tar Heels, they were not allowed to do that because of NCAA sanctions. The ACC announced last fall that it would not recognize a Coastal Division title, should UNC win it. And yet, North Carolina made rings that said Coastal Division Champions. Thats basically the end of that story and its importance, despite the fuss that was made over it last week.

Of course, UNC head coach Larry Fedora was mentored by Mack Brown, who did something similar last week. Brown handed out rings in honor of Texas winning the Alamo Bowl.

Yep.

So, yes, North Carolina didnt technically win the Coastal Division. And no, handing out rings might not make much sense to outsiders. But the rings arent for outsiders. Now, if the players themselves didnt like the rings? Problem. Otherwise, its meant to be a reward for them. Just like the alternate uniforms tha

UNC's 'fainting goats' phenomenon goes viral

North Carolina head coach Larry Fedora has shown he's willing to inject a bit of youth and enthusiasm into the program under his tenure. He came in last year as a bit of a Red Bull-fueled energetic character. But can be down with the youth movement, as well.

Last year, UNC wore chrome helmets and this coming year, the Tar Heels will don alternate uniforms. And the team has plenty of fun, too. Quarterback Bryn Renner has never been shy about expressing his emotions on the field, whether its through his now-infamous lawnmower celebration or just showing disappointment after a mistake.

Backup quarterback Caleb Pressley, who has made a series of funny videos, poked a little fun at Renner's celebration with a mockumentary. That emotion makes Renner a prime target for pranks. He'll react to just about anything that happens.

And he did not disappoint when some of the offensive staff at UNC decided to "punk" their starting QB during practice last season. Renner snapped the ball, and as he dr

North Carolina Football: Tar Heels get rings for 8-4 season

Not to take anything away from North Carolina, but the Tar Heels finished 8-4 (5-3 ACC) in one of the worst power conference divisions in the country.

If it weren’t for ineligibility, UNC would have beat out a six-win Georgia Tech team to play Florida State in the ACC Championship Game.

So in honor of the Heels’ above-average year, coach Larry Fedora has handed out co-champion rings to each member of the roster and and staff.

Assistant equipment manager Jason Freeman tweeted out photos of the rings this morning. They’re actually really cool looking, but would you wear a ring that boasted an 8-4 record?

And you thought Ohio State’s 12-0 rings were ridiculous…
