The ACC Baseball Tournament

We have finished off another baseball regular season, and now the fun really begins. From here on out, Virginia will be facing, to steal a line from Top Gun, the best of the best. And no, we will not sing ‘You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling’, so don’t ask. I will not jump up on my soapbox, as I have done on Twitter all weekend about how UVa finishes the year with the most ACC wins, takes 2 of 3 on the road at UNC, and sweeps FSU, and is seeded 3rd in the Tournament, because that will not get us anywhere now. That will not change in the foreseeable future. Luckily, this might be one of the last years off pool play, so we have that going for us. But in the 2013, we are back to the tried and true system, played from Wednesday through Sunday. So who will UVa face? Let’s break it down.

	The Field

As much as we wrote last week on the Tourney probabilities, it sorted out relatively quickly, without much movement. Here are the pools.

	Pool A

	#1 UNC (47-8, 21-7)

	#4 NC State (4...

RB Clifton Richardson transferring from Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Virginia coach Mike London says junior running back Clifton Richardson has decided to transfer.

London says Richardson asked for permission to pursue opportunities elsewhere and he wishes him well. Richardson has two seasons of eligibility remaining. The 6-foot, 210-pound Newport News native played sparingly as Virginia's No. 3 tailback the past two seasons. He carried just 24 times for 59 yards last season after being hampered by a leg injury in 2012.
He rushed for 366 yards on 72 carries and two touchdowns as a freshman, a 5.1-yard average.

Richardson finished spring practice listed third on the depth chart at tailback, behind Kevin Parks and Khalek Shepherd.

Virginia's Dynamic Duo: From Unknown To Unstoppable

February 28 – Virginia is up on Duke by 11, with just over 90 clicks on the clock. Joe Harris has the ball, looking to stick the dagger in the Blue Devils’ heart. Up around the three-point line, he’s got a taller Amile Jefferson guarding him, when teammate Akil Mitchell hurries out to deliver a solid screen left. Under the basket, Mason Plumlee is napping, he’s late to help and races at Harris as he makes his move towards the top of the key.
Mitchell is left alone and streaks to the basket, Harris delivers him the ball, two steps, followed by a monster jam. It was a fitting exclamation point to a fantastic win. Moments later, the pair would be jumping for joy with their teammates, along with the entire student section at center court.

The two juniors dominated the 3rd ranked Blue Devils that night. Harris would end up stealing most of the headlines the next morning. He scored a career high 36 points in a “anything you can do, I can do better” battle with Seth Curry. However, Mitchell’s producti

Wisconsin gets rematch with Virginia in B1G/ACC Challenge

Wisconsin welcomed former assistant coach Tony Bennett and his Virginia Cavaliers back to the Kohl Center and coach Bennett's charges came out with a 60-54 victory in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The Badgers will get a chance to avenge that loss this season as the two will meet in the 15th annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

The Badgers and Cavaliers will meet on Dec. 4th at John Paul Jones Arena, with the time and ESPN station to be determined at a later date.

Last season the two conferences were at a stalemate, tying at 6-6, and leaving the Big Ten with the Commissioners Cup as the winner of the 2011 challenge.

The loss last year dropped the Badgers to 6-8 overall in the challenge, but they are actually one of the most successful teams in the Big Ten as they are second in wins to only Illinois.

Wisconsin has won games three of the last five seasons in the challenge.

UW's opponent is coming off an appearance in the 2013 NIT tournament and holds a 5-1 all-tim...

Looking at Virginia recruit B.J. Stith

For those of you just getting back from your five-year tour in Antarctica, B.J. Stith is the son - the second son, he has an older brother Brandan who'll play his college ball at East Carolina - of UVA legend Bryant Stith. Naturally, therefore, his every move has been watched by recruitophiles for a long time now, and much of what I'm going to say is already well-known.
Name: B.J. Stith
Position: SG
Hometown: Lawrenceville
School: Oak Hill
Height: 6'5"
Weight: 175

24/7: 94, four stars; #12 SG, VA #2, US #44
ESPN: 80, four stars; #19 SG, VA #2, Atl #14
Rivals: four stars; US #36
Scout: four stars; #19 SG

Other offers: none

I normally write the basketball profiles within the week after the commitment, but in Stith's case that didn't make much sense. It's been almost two years since he verbaled up, which is to say that he did so before his sophomore year even began. September of 2011, specifically. There wasn't hardly anything to go on, so I made the executive de

Virginia's Brogdon, Gill ready to step on the court again

After an up and down season that saw Virginia struggle early, peak by beating Duke, and struggle down the stretch the Cavaliers are ready to look ahead to a promising 2013-14 season. Tony Bennett's team will have two players coming off of redshirts that should be ready to make an impact.

Malcolm Brogdon says his mind keeps wandering toward next November.
"I can't stop thinking about this coming season," Brogdon, a redshirt sophomore guard on the Virginia basketball team, said recently. "We got the addition of (Anthony Gill) coming, he's a really good player. And we have those freshmen that have grown a little bit. Joe Harris and all the other guys."
"So I think we have a chance to be really good this season."
Brogdon didn't mention another reason for optimism for the Virginia basketball program when looking ahead to next year -- his healthy return. Brogdon missed the final four games of his freshman season in 2011-12, then all of last season while

ACC notebook: Virginia remains undecided at quarterback

Virginia unveiled its post-spring camp depth chart Monday without a defined starter named at quarterback.
The depth chart lists, in order: David Watford or Greyson Lambert or Phillip Sims.Coach Mike London and his staff refused to acknowledge a pecking order. But some reports suggest there's more to the list than happenstance.
When Michael Rocco left a few months ago, it seemed like the natural next move would be to appoint Alabama transfer Phillip Sims as the new full-time starter. But that hasnt happened.

Watford, a 6-foot-1, 200-pound sophomore, sat out last season but saw significant action in two games in 2011. In consecutive contests against Southern Mississippi and Idaho at home, Watford combined to complete 20 of 40 pass attempts for 176 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. On the season, he was 30-for-74 for 346 yards, three scores and four interceptions.

Lambert is a 6-foot-5 redshirt freshman who was rated the No. 9 quarterback in the Class of 2012, according to Scout.com. The Jesup, Ga

Bennett: Jesperson granted release to transfer

Virginia coach Tony Bennett says sophomore guard Paul Jesperson is leaving the Cavaliers' program.

The 6-foot-6 Jesperson started 33 of 35 games this season. He averaged 4.7 points and 2.2 rebounds. He scored a career-best 12 points in an 80-69 victory at Maryland on Feb. 10, but shot just 36.1 percent from the field overall. He made 40 of 108 3-point tries, or 37 percent.

Bennett says Jesperson, of Merrill, Wis., intends to transfer to another school and continue his basketball career.

He's the fifth player to transfer since Bennett arrived in 2009.

Paul Jesperson to transfer from Virginia

According to Whitelaw Reid, Virginia's Paul Jesperson will transfer.

A source tells me that #UVa sophomore guard Paul Jesperson has been granted his release and will transfer. More details to come.
— Whitelaw Reid (@WhiteysWorld365) April 15, 2013
Jesperson's departure comes largely due to a jampacked roster at Virginia. With Jontel Evans the only departure and 4 players incoming, some attrition was to be expected. Brian over at StreakingTheLawn.com just posted a great article on Virginia's roster situation. Here's a snippet, but go check out the full article.

A Virginia basketball program that has played short-handed in recent memory will suddenly find itself with a great deal of playable depth next season. The Cavaliers lose only one player to graduation in 2013 (point guard Jontel Evans) and will add four players to the depth chart next fall. True freshmen Devon Hall and London Perrantes will join sophomores Anthony Gill and Malcom Brogdon to give Tony Bennett's team 13 sch

Rocco's NCAA appeal denied; will sit out season

Michael Rocco will have to sit out the season at Richmond after the NCAA denied his appeal for a transfer exception.

The former Virginia quarterback transferred after last season. The school appealed to the NCAA for a one-time exception to allow him to play this season, but the NCAA turned it down. NCAA bylaws require a player have two seasons of eligibility to qualify for the exception, and Rocco only has one.

Spiders coach Danny Rocco says he's disappointed with the ruling, but that his nephew can practice with the team throughout the season.

Making the case for the Virginia Cavaliers as a NCAA Tournament team.

So I’m checking out CBS’s Sportsline bracketology this week to see what teams they had in the NCAA tournament. Now after Virginia won at Maryland this past weekend, I figured the Cavaliers were in the Big Dance and I said as much in this week’s ACC bubble analysis that I post each Monday. Now if you didn’t have the Cavaliers in the NCAAs, then at the very least they had to be squarely on the bubble.
CBS Sportsline didn’t have the Cavs in the tournament, not the last four, and not the last four out. Why? This really made no sense to me how Virginia wasn’t even on their radar. We’ve looked at Virginia’s resume before lets check it out again.
RPI (79) Virginia (18-6) (8-3)
Last 10 – (7-3)
Good Wins – (76) Tennessee, * (32) Wisconsin, * (36) North Carolina, (66) Florida State, * (16) NC State, (77) Maryland
Bad Losses – (141) Delaware, * (317) Old Dominion, * (152) Clemson, (135) Wake Forest, (138) George Mason, (122) Georgia Tech
Now that’s one bizarre resume. The Cavaliers are 6-0 agai
