FSU suspends 3B Jose Brizuela indefinitely

Florida State baseball coach Mike Martin suspended starting third baseman Jose Brizuela for a violation of team rules for an indefinite amount of time after the Seminoles ACC Tournament game on Wednesday.
Brizuela started and went 0 for 2 with an RBI and a walk.
He was second on the team with a .320 batting average, three home runs, 12 doubles, 40 RBIs and has scored 34 runs. Brizuela has started 56 of 57 games at third base for Florida State this season.
Martin said in a statement that Brizuela has been sent back to Tallahassee, leaving his future on the team this postseason unclear.
The Seminoles fell to Georgia Tech 4-3 on Wednesday afternoon in the ACC Tournament opener for both teams. Florida State now must win both of its remaining games in pool play (against Virginia Tech and Virginia) to advance to the championship game.
Casey Smit is the only other Florida State player to start at third this season, and its possible that he will move over from first base and John Nogowski will step in at first.

All opening week point spreads now available

Hat tip to Beyond the Bets for catching that offshore site BetOnline has posted point spreads for all 44 games on the opening weekend of the college football season. Earlier this month, 5Dimes had taken the lead in posting lines for a handful of openers.

	A few observations:

	*Differences of opinion

The numbers posted by the two offshore books reveal a few notable discrepancies.

Alabama (-14) vs. Virginia Tech – The Hokies were getting more than three touchdowns from 5Dimes a couple weeks back. How often do you see that big of a difference, even this early?

LSU (-4.5) vs. TCU – At 5Dimes, this line came out at LSU -6 and was quickly bet up to 7.5. (Note that this was the spread even after the news of Devonte Fields' suspension.)

Oklahoma State (-6.5) vs. Mississippi State – 5Dimes is giving the Cowboys 11.

Florida State (-6.5) at Pittsburgh – Same deal as OSU-MSU. 5Dimes opened with the Seminoles as an 11-point favorite.

	Maybe this is one book&#39...

Thomas, Hokies turning the page on last season

Play a word association game with Virginia Tech football, and the most common answers would probably be dominant defense or great special teams. With the occasional exception of a Michael Vick reference, offense doesnt come to mind. Unless its in a negative light.
The Hokies havent traditionally needed an explosive offense. But in the last few years, fans grew impatient with the consistently bland offense under former coordinator Bryan Stinespring, who held that role from 2002-12. In his tenure, the Hokies were top 3 in the ACC in total offense just once and ranked sixth or lower in five of his final seven seasons.
Last year, though, the Hokie offense hit a low point. Quarterback Logan Thomas, in his second year as the starter, struggled. He threw 18 touchdowns with 16 interceptions and completed just 51.3 percent of his passes, which was by far the lowest percentage of the top 10 ACC quarterbacks in yards per game.
He wasnt alone, though. Nothing about the Virginia Tech offense worked. The Hokies were ninth

Virginia Tech Looks to Bring in Another Strong Recruiting Class in 2014

Virginia Tech Looks to Bring in Another Strong Recruiting Class in 2014While the spring was about the football team’s coaches working with the players they have, the summer will challenge them to look to who they could have.
Recruiting in college football is a 24/7 business these days, and although the spring brought a fresh round of a commitments for the 2014 class, the race for the country’s top recruits will intensify in the coming months.
Courtesy of The Key Play
Last year’s recruiting class was among the best the Hokies have ever brought to Blacksburg, ranking in the top 25 of most scouting services’ evaluations, so expectations will be high for the coaches to match 2013’s haul.
However, the team is already off to a good start. Tech has snagged eight commitments for the 2014 cycle so far, and some of them have the potential to be impact players.
C.J. Reavis, a four-star safety out of Chester, Va., headlines the list of commits so far. The 6’2”, 200-pound defensive back chose Te...

ACC Grant of Rights Ties Virginia Tech Down

ACC Grant of Rights Ties Virginia Tech DownThe ACC Grant of Rights might seem like a stuffy, boring legal term, but in reality, its an extremely relevant development for Virginia Tech.
The basics of the move are simple; if any school wants to leave the ACC between now and the 2026-27 season, then they don’t get to take their television rights with them.
Courtesy of Yahoo
Considering that most of the money that flows through college football is directly tied to each school’s mammoth TV deal, it’s pretty significant to say that any school fleeing the conference has to forfeit their most profitable feature back to the ACC.
This might seem like a bigger deal for perpetually wavering schools in the conference, like Florida State or Clemson, but this was a meaningful development for the Hokies as well.
Athletic director Jim Weaver has long made it clear that he doesn’t want the school to go anywhere, but that doesn’t mean that the “VT4SEC” rumors haven’t persisted all the same.

The Broncos select Vinston Painter in the 6th round

Spring Game Mars Productive Practices for HokiesThree passes.
That’s all it took to completely rewrite the narrative surrounding Virginia Tech football’s spring practices.
Courtesy of The Daily Press
Before this weekend’s Spring Game, Hokie Nation was abuzz over the apparent progress new offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler was making with the offense, specifically the way he seemed to be helping troubled quarterback Logan Thomas.
However, after the scrimmage, fans and the media are in a panic about the state of the offense, and it’s almost all thanks to the three interceptions Thomas threw against the second team defense.
There’s no doubt that some concern over these miscues is warranted; Thomas seemed to stare down his receivers and tried to force throws he shouldn’t have.
But that doesn’t mean that all of the progress the team made in just a few weeks should be totally discounted. Prior to the Spring Game, Loeffler was incredibly positive about the progress Thomas was making, and ...

Virginia Tech RB Holmes arrested following fight

Virginia Tech tailback Michael Holmes is facing a felony malicious wounding charge following a weekend fight in Blacksburg.

Holmes, 19, was arrested after police were called to a fight at about 1:50 a.m. Sunday. He also faces two misdemeanor assault and battery charges as a result of incident, which began as an altercation between two women, Lt. Nathan O'Dell with the Blacksburg Police Department said Monday.

Malicious wounding charges typically result from an assault with a weapon, but can also result from broken bones or severe lacerations, O'Dell said.

One person was taken to the hospital as a result of the fight, but O'Dell declined to reveal the nature of his injuries. Two others were treated at the scene.

Holmes, who is being held without bond at the Montgomery County jail, was to be arraigned Monday. However, Holmes has hired a lawyer, postponing his appearance until Tuesday.

Jimmy Turk, Holmes' attorney, did not immediately return a phone message left at his office by The Associat

ACC notebook: Hokies search for consistency

Virginia Techs defense underachieved last season. No Hokie will argue that.

So when the unit stood out in last Saturdays spring football game, it only made sense to think they will be much stingier this coming fall. Spring games can fool you that way. And maybe the Hokies defense will be much better this season its certainly talented enough and is exceptionally coached.

But maybe the scrimmage was fools gold because Virginia Techs offense is just as much a mess right now as it was last season when Frank Beamers team slumped to a 7-6 mark, and that was after winning its final three games. At least the numbers from scrimmages and the spring game suggest thats the case.

All stats aside in the game won by the White (second) team, 27-9, the most perplexing and discouraging development of the game was senior quarterback Logan Thomas struggles. After having a difficult season a year ago in which he didnt come close to living up to expectations, Thomas had a poor spring, and in the game Saturday was intercepted t

Virginia Tech RB Michael holmes arrested on charges of malicious wounding, simple assault.

Michael Holmes' mugshot.

Virginia Tech running back Michael Holmes was arrested on Sunday on charges of malicious wounding and simple assault during a fight.

"A press release issued Sunday night said officers responded
to the 200 block of College Ave. for a fight in progress at 1:50 a.m.
Sunday.

As a result of the investigation, Holmes, 19, was arrested
and charged with malicious wounding, a Class 3 felony in Virginia, and
two counts of assault and battery, which are Class 1 misdemeanors.

The release said one victim was transported to LewisGale
Medical Center for treatment of an unspecified injury. Two other victims
were treated at the scene. The names of the victims were not released."

Malicious wounding is defined in Virginia as an act where the suspect tries to "“maliciously shoot, stab, cut, or wound any person or by any means cause
him bodily injury, with the intent to maim, disfigure, disable, or
kill.”...

Virginia Tech’s new digital camouflage helmet for 2013

Virginia Tech is once again going to be wearing a digital camouflage design on their helmets for a game this season, which has become a nice trend around college football for some schools in honor of the nation’s military. The Hokies were a military appreciation helmet last season, but this year’s edition is heavy on the orange.

These helmets will be worn for a September 21 game against Marshall. This is interesting because the Hokies have that September 21 game marked on their calendar as a “White Effect” game. It would have seemed like an appropriate opportunity to roll out a white Hokies helmet as the fans will likely be decked out in all white.
I sort of like last year’s military appreciation helmet better than this version, but when it comes to honoring the troops and those who have served it is difficult to find too much fault in any design. Don’t worry though, because I am sure Virginia Tech will serve up something we can poke some fun at for the 2013 season.

Virginia Tech to build massive new scoreboard

Virginia Tech is about to get a brand new scoreboard, that from the computer renderings, looks to be pretty amazing. The new 108 foot scoreboard will sit in an end zone and will say “HOME OF THE HOKIES” on the backside.
Virginia Tech to install new 108′ scoreboard. Here is what the proposal looks like. Nice! #Hokies, #VT twitter.com/Bill_Lawson_TX…
