Allan Dykstra Puts Padres in Rearview with Fantastic 2013 Binghamton Beginning

You don’t pick the team that drafts you, and you don’t pick the team you might get traded to. Binghamton Mets first baseman Allan Dykstra learned that first-hand.

San Diego is his home, the Padres his childhood. And being drafted by the team that he’d grown up watching made the dream of playing baseball for a living even better. When the day came to put that behind him, he experienced conflicting emotions.
“That was really hard and definitely hit me by surprise,” said Dykstra last week, when the B-Mets visited the Trenton Thunder. “At the same time, it gave me a fresh start because it just didn’t seem like things were going to work out with them.”
Dykstra, 26, was traded to the Mets in exchange for Eddie Kunz in 2011, and spent the entire season with Binghamton. Regardless of the adjustments he had to make in switching teams and allegiance, he put up strong numbers that season. He finished the season hitting .267, with 104 hits, 77 RBI, and 69 walks in 121 games.

Collier impressed with WFU visit

Early this month DeaconSports reported that QB Stephen Collier would be visiting Wake Forest.
He went through with that trip and now Wake has a better chance to land him than ever. Last week Collier was on the road a lot visiting schools like Auburn, Wake Forest, Marshall, Cincinnati and Ohio State, and Collier said he may try to visit some other schools before the end of June.

#74 Wake Forest Demon Deacons: College football 77 in 77

Sometimes the Wake Forest Demon Deacons don’t make the cut for the college football 77 in 77. There’s a whole lot of ACC in the 70s and 60s ranked teams; and a ton of basketball schools. Wake Forest is usually down here in the dregs with Duke, Kentucky, Boston College, Indiana, Virgina, every season. It’s b-ball schools and ACC; or both.
And Wake Forest Coach Jim Grobe has done well against the other ACC schools in the state. He’s 15-5 versus Duke, North Carolina and NC State since 2010. Expectations for football are pretty low at Wake Forest; their stadium seats only 31,000.

Wake Forest last season: 5-7 with a win over a nobody in the Enron Nothing Bowl. Not bad! Offense was a “No Wake Zone” as the Deacons finished 117th in total O, 114th in scoring, 113th in rushing. However, at least they were balanced. Wake Forest was also 100th in passing defense, 91 in scoring defense, and 88th in total defense. The under .500 finish was rather disappointing given that WF started out so hot a...

Wake Forest rushing to find offense in 2013

Fans of the Wake Forest Demon Deacons hit their respective pillows the night of November 3, 2012 with visions of another bowl bid dancing (okay, maybe just sitting around playing cards) in their heads. After all, the Deacs had just dispatched Boston College, 28-14, leaving Wake Forest with 5-4 record with three games remaining on the schedule.
Granted, the next three opponents were not exactly pushovers: N.C. State, an athletic group with a veteran leader in Mike Glennon, Notre Dame and upstart Vanderbilt. Yes, Vanderbilt. However, a one in three chance to become bowl-eligible is better than none, and the Wolfpack and Commodores could (on paper) be had.
What happened next will take a while for fans of Wake Forest football to forget.
The Deacons gave up 130 points over the course of those last three games (55 of them to Vandy) and were completely blown out of football's postseason picture, leaving only a trail of injuries and divisiveness among the team. Fingers were pointed, rumors abounded â€

Wake Forest Football: Demon Deacons think they own the Sunshine State

Oh, Wake Forest. You're drunk. Go home.

Offensive coordinator Steed Lobotzke tweeted out a picture to inform followers—and potential recruits—that Wake Forest owns the state of Florida, calling the Sunshine State "Deacon Country."

No, seriously.

Yes, the Deacons have 28 players on their roster from the state of Florida (which is not too far away from North Carolina in the first place). But of those recruits, only 15 were rated as high as a three-star prospect (247Sports).

Nine were given two-star ratings, while three were unrated. None were four or five stars, and the 2010-2013 class never finished better than 10th place in the ACC for Team Recruiting Rankings.

To scrutinize even further, Wake Forest is 2-5 vs. Florida teams since 2008, losing by an average score of 29-16. The Demon Deacons are 19-30 over the last four seasons and missed the postseason in 2012.

Wake Forest football still hitting Florida hard

One key component of Wake Forest's success on the gridiron during the Grobe era is the establishment of a Florida talent pipeline. Deacon stalwarts like Alphonso Smith, Stanley Arnoux and Riley Skinner are just some of the talent plucked out of the Sunshine State to make a difference in Winston-Salem.
Coach Steed Lobotzke took time today on Twitter to let everyone know that the Deacs' efforts in Florida weren't falling by the wayside.

Florida is Deacon country! twitter.com/coachlobotzke/…
— Steed Lobotzke (@coachlobotzke) June 10, 2013
If anything, it would appear that Wake Forest has more of a foothold in Florida than ever before, as many of the players noted in the picture will depended on for quality contributions this season. Duran Lowe, Merrill Noel and Ryan Janvion should all see significant minutes in Derrick Jackson's secondary, while Orville Reynolds and Deandre Martin are expected to play a major role in the overhaul of the Wake Forest offense.

It doesn’t appear that Wake Forest got very creative with the new designs, but sometimes that isn’t a bad thing. The helmets look pretty clean and simple, so we can’t imagine that they will upset too many fans.

This Is How You Lose Them: Wake Forest Basketball Fans In Revolt

Wake Forest basketball coach Jeff Bzdelik has a fan problem. They don’t like him.The students don’t like him. The townies don’t like him. The Board of Trustees doesn’t like him. The alumni base especially doesn’t like him. And fair or not, the line between that dislike being personal or professional continues to blur in the aftermath of his third straight losing campaign heading the Demon Deacons.“Jeff Bzdelik has never endeared himself to the fan base, and he also hasn’t won many games,” said Martin Rickman, who covers Wake Forest sports for the website SB Nation. “That’s a recipe for disaster.”The good news for Bzdelik is that none of it matters. Not the 11-42 record in the ACC. Not the vehement outcry from a usually milquetoast fan base. Not the fact that the school is in the midst of a large fundraising effort for renovations to the basketball arena it’s purchasing from local government, something that would surely benefit from a fresh pitchman.None of it matters because Bzdelik has

Wake AD re-affirms support for Jeff Bzdelik

Wake Forest athletic director Ron Wellman says basketball coach Jeff Bzdelik will be back for a fourth season.

In an interview with The Associated Press on Tuesday, Wellman re-affirmed his support for Bzdelik and said he is ''very encouraged about the future of our program.''

The Demon Deacons have had three straight losing seasons and no postseason tournament appearances under Bzdelik. He is 34-60 overall and 11-42 against Atlantic Coast Conference opponents.

This year's young team went 13-18 with upset wins over No. 2 Miami and No. 18 North Carolina State with a roster that had only three available non-freshmen on scholarship.

More than 60 percent of the team's minutes were played by freshmen and Wellman says the Demon Deacons ''are going to reap the benefits of that foundation.''

Personally, I’m a bigger fan of the white helmet with the Deacon on one side and the “WF” on the other.

Now we’ll see if the new digs can translate into a winning season for the program.

Wake Forest unveils prototype football helmets

It’s not clear whether these helmets will be used by Wake Forest for the 2013-14 football season or not, but I hope the white one is. The white helmet with the Demon Deacon logo is a great new look and would look awesome on the field. The black helmet is decent, but the black on black makes it tough to see the logo and I’m not a huge fan of disguising your logo like that.
Here’s what their current helmet looks like:

Prostitution sting nabs poker champ

This was a “How to Catch a Predator” type of sting, but instead of catching pedophiles, they went after men who like to solicit male prostitutes. A spokesperson for the Wake Forest Police Department stated that the 48-year-old was “one of six men who responded to an advertisement posted by undercover police on a website often used by prostitutes.” “The locations prostitutes choose for this type of criminal activity vary and seldom remain the same for more than a couple of days at a time, which makes enforcement difficult,” Police Chief Jeffrey Leonard said in a statement. “In this instance, we conducted the operation at a local hotel with its full cooperation. We are not aware of this type of criminal activity ever occurring at the hotel. Our officers selected the hotel for the undercover operation at random.” Raymer, who won the 2004 World Series of Poker, was released on $1000 bond, has a court appearance scheduled for April 18th.

No. 10 Maryland 92, Wake Forest 81

Alyssa Thomas had the first triple-double in Atlantic Coast Conference tournament history, and No. 10 Maryland beat Wake Forest 92-81 in overtime in a quarterfinal Friday night.

Thomas - the league's two-time player of the year - had a career-high 32 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists for her second triple-double this season. She helped the second-seeded Terrapins (24-6) sidestep a major scare against a Wake Forest team they beat by 26 points five nights earlier.

Maryland scored the first 10 points of OT, with Thomas starting the run by hitting a twisting layup with 3:45 left. Eight of her points came in overtime to send the Terps into the semifinals for the second straight year.

Chelsea Douglas scored a career-high 31 points for 10th-seeded Wake Forest (13-19), which ran out of steam in overtime and was denied its biggest victory since knocking off then-No. 7 Miami in last year's quarterfinals.

Asia Williams scored 19 points and Lakevia Boykin added 17 for the Demon Deacons, who were seeking thei

Wake Forest Fans Take Out “Fire Bzdelik” Ad In Student Newspaper

When former Demon Deacons coach Dino Gaudio was fired in April of 2010, it was his lack of postseason success that was cited as the main reason for his dismissal. At this point, Wake Forest fans would welcome the mere thought of a postseason.
In his three years at the helm, Jeff Bzdelik has just ten ACC victories. For reference, UVA has ten ACC wins this year and is considered on the bubble. So yeah, things haven’t really gone too well for the program since Gaudio was let go.
Fans are getting restless. So much so that they’ve taken out an ad in the Wake Forest student newspaper, Old Gold & Black. They’re urging Director of Athletics Ron Wellman to make a move – soon.

No. 7 Maryland 73, Wake Forest 63

Tianna Hawkins and Alyssa Thomas each scored 23 points and No. 7 Maryland held on to beat pesky Wake Forest 73-63 on Friday night.

Malina Howard added 12 to help the Terrapins (19-3, 10-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) sweat out their ninth straight win.

They shot 54 percent, built a 20-point lead and then blew nearly all of it during a dizzying series of mistakes before regrouping just in time to preserve a huge matchup Monday night at No. 5 Duke.

Chelsea Douglas scored 17 points for the Demon Deacons (10-13, 3-8), who were denied their biggest victory in 20 years and lost their fifth straight.

They clawed back in the game with a 31-14 run during a 12-minute stretch that coincided with a stretch in which Maryland had 12 turnovers on 17 possessions.

Douglas capped that run with a free throw with 3:01 left to pull them to 62-59. Dearica Hamby hit a layup to bring Wake Forest within three at 64-61 with 2 1/2 minutes left, but the Demon Deacons managed just one more field goal the rest of the way.
