The Future of Indiana Basketball

After the loss of Cody Zeller and Victor Oladipo to the NBA, it seems that the Hoosiers are in a better place. Shown in the increase in recruit quality that is interested in becoming apart of what is one of the most prestigious college basketball programs ever.

As shown by the intrigue of Theo Pinson (2014 Recruit), Indiana is a top contender because of the way Tom Crean shaped Oladipo from a no name to possibly a top three pick in the NBA draft in mid June. Although they did not get Pinson, who went to his hometown's University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, his response to why he was interested is as follows, “He wasn’t really a big-time player in high school. He was good and really athletic. But they took him to a whole different level.”

With recent additions including recruited big man Luke Fischer, Noah Vonleh, and transfer SG Evan Gordon, the Hoosiers are filling the voids that Zeller, Oladipo and Remy Abell created this off-season. The hole that Zeller and Oladipo lef...

Oladipo Emerging As GM's Favorite Player In Draft

Victor Oladipo appears to be the most popular player in the 2013 NBA Draft for general managers, even if he isn't on top of draft boards.
"Oladipo is the guy that GMs love in this draft," wrote Chad Ford. "May be the only one. I've talked to 14 or 15 who tell me he's their favorite player. Almost zero downside and still significant upside. Not sure he's a fit in Cleveland or Washington -- but Orlando and Phoenix both look like strong fits. (Trey) Burke may be a bigger need (for Orlando), but Oladipo might be the better player long-term."
Oladipo was a first team All-American in his junior season at Indiana.

Late nights at gym likely to pay off for Oladipo

Victor Oladipo mentions the late nights at the gym, the wear and tear on his key card, and he's quick to point out he's just a tad unusual, too.

The Indiana product is also just a few weeks away from realizing a dream.

The NBA draft is next month and Olapido figures to be one of the top picks after he helped lead the Hoosiers back to national prominence.

''It's surreal sometimes,'' he said.

It's also the product of all those hours at the gym honing his shot and developing into something more than a defensive stopper.

He spent so much time there he wore out his key card. Now, he's in for a big payoff.

''I'll be honest with you, I'm a weird dude,'' he said Friday at the NBA draft combine. ''At Indiana, we'd just finish watching a playoff game ... a late game, West Coast.''

That didn't stop Oladipo from going to the gym afterward. He swiped his key card so much it stopped working.

Not Oladipo, though.

Despite setting a standing vertical leap record, former Indiana Hoosiers center Cody Zeller will struggle in the NBA

Former Indiana Hoosiers center Cody Zeller achieved a standing vertical leap of 35.5″ at the NBA Draft combine on Friday. The 20-year-old Zeller’s jump is a record for any individual listed at 6’9″ or above in the last decade. After averaging 16.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists over 36 games as a sophomore, the 7-foot, 240 pound Zeller unwisely declared for the draft in April. Once considered a top-five selection, Zeller is now only expected to go somewhere in the upper half of the opening round. An All-Big Ten First Team choice, it became clear that the native Indianan … Continue reading →

Big Ten has just one MAA: Hoosiers Noah Vonle

Although the college basketball season did not end with a national title for the Big Ten, there was no doubt that it was the strongest league in the nation. At least during the regular season. That may or may not change next year. The Big Ten boasts a grand total of one McDonald’s All-American: the Indiana Hoosiers Noah Vonle.
Let’s get to know him!

The good: tweener who’s drawn comparisons to Jamal Mashburn, versatile offensive game, can back you in. Or square up and give you a facial with the touch on his j. His shot will entertain the Hoosiers faithful at Assembly Hall next winter.
7’3″ wingspan is exactly what the Hoosiers need… “They really struggled with Syracuse’s length, but they’ll bounce back,” Vonleh said about the Hoosiers elimination in the NCAA Tournament at MAA media day.
“They’ll be losing a lot of seniors, so hopefully there’s some freshman in the starting line-up,” Vonle said of the IU Hoosiers.
The bad: needs to be more assertive, play with more confidence an

Indiana Hoosiers dunk contest is not what you might expect

It is probably safe to say that we all recognize Indiana as a basketball school. The Hoosiers have built a long-standing rich tradition when it comes to college hoops. Bobby Knight helped build Indiana basketball to what it continues to be to this day as they have resurfaced as a Big Ten power. It's OK for a college football blog to recognize the Hoosiers at a basketball school.

Apparently it is also OK for Indiana football coach Kevin Wilson to recognize the basketball tradition in Bloomington.

Looking to show off the improved athleticism of the Indiana football program, Wilson had his football players participate in a dunk contest, and some of these guys have some jam skills. the football Hoosiers may not be quite the sensation Florida Gulf Coast is, but it's also not everyday we see big football players showing off their hops and dunks on camera. Thankfully, Indiana thought it would be a good idea to share this fun with the Internet.

Is Indiana a top 25 team heading into next season?

A year ago, Indiana was a consensus top three team in most of the early rankings for the 2012-2013 season.
The decisions of Christian Watford and Cody Zeller to return to school coupled with other returnees like Jordan Hulls, Victor Oladipo and Will Sheehey and a talented recruiting class made the Hoosiers a popular pick to rise to the top of the polls and compete for a national championship.
The outlook isn’t quite as optimistic for 2013-2014 as Zeller and Oladipo have declared for the NBA Draft, Hulls and Watford have graduated and as a result, Indiana will be one of the nation’s youngest teams with just two true upperclassmen in Sheehey and Austin Etherington.
With the passing of the NBA Draft early entry deadline, preseason top 25 polls are beginning to trickle out and despite significant departures from a Big Ten championship team, Indiana is included in most of them. The most bullish prognostications come from NBC Sports, which has IU at No. 15 and ESPN.com’s Jason King:

The Hoosiers offered the 6-foot-4 guard a scholarship after watching him at last April’s Boo Williams Invitational in Hampton, Va., and Indiana remains high on Hill’s list because of his relationship with Tom Crean.
“They are definitely somewhere at the top,” Hill told Inside the Hall on Monday night. “We talk probably twice or three times a week, just texting coach [Steve] McClain, coach Crean and coach [Kenny] Johnson. My interest level in them is very high because me and [Crean] have got a great relationship.”
Hill, who is the No. 25 player in the 2014 class according to ESPN.com, said his conversations with Crean are rarely about basketball but more often about life. He said that’s important to him going forward because he wants to go to a school where the coach s...

2014 four-star guard Phil Booth updates recruitment

Indiana has been recruiting 2014 Mount St. Joseph (Md.) guard Phil Booth for some time now and his interest in the Hoosiers remains high.
Tom Crean has talked about recruiting year-round winners and Booth certainly fits that description. Mount St. Joseph finished his junior season 31-8 as Booth averaged 16 points, seven rebounds and five assists playing alongside Ohio State signee Kameron Williams in the backcourt.
And his travel team, Team Takeover, is 9-0 through the first two Nike Elite Youth Basketball (EYBL) sessions and well on its way to qualifying for July’s Peach Jam.
Indiana has recruited Team Takeover heavily under Crean and Kenny Johnson with Maurice Creek, Victor Oladipo and most recently, Stanford Robinson, products of that program.
The 6-foot-3, 170-pound guard took an unofficial visit to Bloomington for Indiana’s win over Michigan on ESPN’s College GameDay and is still high on the Hoosiers.
“I’m still very interested, yeah,” Booth told Inside the Hall on Sunday night...

Hoosiers Creek set to transfer for Senior Season

When times were hard and things were down at Assembly Hall there was hope in form of Maurice Creek. He was a member of the same class as Christian Watford, Jordan Hulls, and Derek Elison and arguably was the first of all of these players to help Hoosiers basketball begin it's upward climb. Unlike the others he won't finish out his eligibility at IU, instead opting to graduate and transfer for his final year in search of better playing time.

Life can be brutal at times and no one on the Hoosiers exemplifies this more than Creek, who started as a freshman and averaged 16.4 points per game. No one could forget his 31 points against rival Kentucky that season either. However, it would be all downhill following that as he failed to finish out a season until this past year.

In that freshman campaign he played just 14 games before suffering a stress fracture to his left knee, shutting his season down. Fast forward to the next year and it's 18 games played before a stress fracture to h

Abell having second thoughts on decision to leave IU

Just five days after it was announced that Remy Abell would leave Indiana and finish his career elsewhere, the junior-to-be is having second thoughts on his decision to transfer.
After speaking with his former high school coach, Jason Couch, The Indianapolis Star reported on Wednesday that Abell was considering staying at Indiana to finish his career and that his mother had met with the coaching staff.
His former high school assistant coach at Eastern High School and mentor, Joe Rogers, confirmed that report to Inside the Hall and provided a little insight into what Abell is currently going through.
“He’s having a tough time making a final decision,” Rogers told Inside the Hall. “The biggest problem is that he’s getting pulled from a lot of different angles. He’s got parents, he’s got friends. Some people say stay, some people say go.”
Playing time was cited as a major reason Abell was leaving Bloomington in the school’s release and Rogers said that it was a factor weighing on the L...

Indiana's Victor Oladipo throws down 360 slam

He won’t claim to the be the best player in the the nation, in fact, Victor Oladipo will say that his Indiana Hoosiers’ teammate Cody Zeller is better than him, but anyone with a pulse that has watching college basketball this year cannot deny the greatness of junior guard in Bloomington. He put all his talents on display in Indiana’s thumping of Illinois in the Big 10 Tournament’s quarterfinal round, and delivered this thuderous 360 dunk: Dipo, as the Indiana faithful refer to him, finished with 12 points on 50% shooting and collected 11 boards.
