Hawkeyes Middle of the Salary Pack

The Iowa football program finds itself in the middle of the Big Ten pack as it relates to what it pays its assistant football coaches.
The Detroit Free Press published a list of salaries and Iowa ranks 5th out of 10 teams. Northwestern and Penn State are not required to publish this information as Northwestern is private and Penn State’s state laws support it.
Iowa pays its assistants $2,318,052 million, or about $150,000 more than a year ago when they also ranked 5th in the league. Ohio State ranks #1 in the league at $3,41 million. Here is how the ten rank this year with last year’s ranking and totals in parenthesis, via The Free Press.

Iowa pays its coordinators the same amount; $325,000. So does Wisconsin, but that amount is $480,000
Michigan’s Defensive Coordinator Greg Mattison is the top paid assistant in the league, earning $750,000 per year to lead the Wolverines defense. Michigan Offensive Coordinator Al Borges is #3 on that list at $600,000, tied with Ohio State Ass...

Iowa HC Kirk Ferentz was called "Fetus-Head" by high school teammates.

Did you ever have a nickname in high school or college that embarrassed you? One so bad you would spend nights awake in bed plotting the deaths of every single person that called to that name? One where you has a specific cruel and torturous end for the person that came up with the name? One that if you had a parent that called you by that name, you planned to cut off contact with them and their potential grandchildren? One where...

Uh, excuse me, getting a little off course there.

(*Takes deep breath. Calls Therapist*)

Anyhow, Iowa head football coach Kirk Ferentz was asked by the Des Moines Register if he had an embarrassing nickname in high school or college. Naturally, he did. It was also one so spectacularly embarrassing that it probably blows your being called something rude and obnoxious out of the water.

Why? He was called "Fetus-Head."

“Fetus Head, that was one. Helmets didn’t fit so well back in the

Iowa G Ingram to transfer

Iowa guard Patrick Ingram plans to transfer after just one season with the Hawkeyes.

Iowa coach Fran McCaffery says Ingram, a native of Indianapolis, has been granted a release from his scholarship after indicating he wants to play closer to home.

Ingram fell behind fellow freshmen Mike Gesell and Anthony Clemmons in a crowded backcourt last season. Gesell and Clemmons both cracked the starting lineup, while Ingram averaged less than a point a game in 19 appearances.

The Hawkeyes will also add incoming freshman guard Peter Jok, Iowa's Mr. Basketball in 2013.

Ingram Leaving Hawkeyes Program

First, here is the release from the Hawkeyes on their granting a transfer release to Patrick Ingram followed by a few of my thoughts:
IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa head men’s basketball coach Fran McCaffery announced today that guard Patrick Ingram (6-foot-2, 211 pounds) has asked for and has been granted his release from his scholarship to transfer to another school.
“Patrick is a tremendous person who was an integral part of our program last season,” said McCaffery. “Patrick indicated that he wants to be closer to home and we have granted his request. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”
The native of Indianapolis averaged six minutes, 0.9 points and 0.6 rebounds in 19 games off the bench as a freshman last season.
Iowa will return 11 letterwinners from a team that went 25-13 and earned NIT runner-up honors, while also adding redshirt freshman forward Kyle Meyer, sophomore swingman Jarrod Uthoff and freshman guard Peter Jok.

Three Hawkeye Things for May 10th

Pat Harty writes an interesting story on Brad Banks in Hawk Central today. Banks had one shining moment, or one great season…for that 2002 campaign and improbably Heisman runner up finish, he’s an Iowa legend forever. If you were too young to recall that season, give this a read and familiarize yourself with a player who was one of the most fun to watch in Iowa history and a guy who had one of the greatest seasons ever enjoyed by an Iowa quarterback playing on one of the three best Iowa football teams in history.
Gary Barta was on College Football Live talking about the Big Ten’s ‘No FCS’ decision. It sounds as though Iowa may try to keep their scheduled games with UNI but won’t add anymore going forward. I don’t want to pick nits with Barta, but this quote seems worthy: “..they’ve (UNI) beaten many Big Ten programs…” Many? Going back 30 years, I wouldn’t even use the phrase ‘they’ve played many Big Ten programs.’ They played Wisconsin last year and have played Iowa several tim

BTN in Prime Time; No Hawkeyes

First, here is the release from the Big Ten related to Prime Time games on the BTN this fall…I have some thoughts below it:
CHICAGO – BTN will televise 12 primetime games during the 2013 college football season, the most in network history. Five games feature a pre-season top-25 Big Ten team, while three of the 12 matchups feature games versus teams from the SEC, ACC and Pac-12 conferences. Eight Big Ten schools in all will be featured in prime.
“Primetime games are becoming more and more popular,” said BTN President Mark Silverman. “Featuring compelling matchups in primetime allows BTN to remain front and center in Big Ten and college football fans’ minds throughout the entire day,” he said.
Highlights of the schedule include a pair of Nebraska and Northwestern games and one with reigning Big Ten Champion Wisconsin, with all three teams listed in many pre-season top 25 polls. Other key games include BTN’s first ever night game at Penn State, as well as Syracuse at Northwestern, Mis...

Hawkeyes Game Film: Offensive Open Practice Notes

This item was authored by HawkeyeGameFilm, a former BCS conference football player and a person who has done scouting work for high school, college and professional football teams. What follows are his thoughts on Iowa’s offense during their final Saturday practice.
I was in attendance at the Iowa spring scrimmage on Saturday and took some notes. No doubt the biggest change we saw from the offense was the consistent no huddle approach. Iowa was hustling up to the line and was getting lined up quickly. It’s a clear break from the past where Iowa would only use the hurry up approach for a series or two. Overall it feels like a good change and Iowa should be a well conditioned team that is able to be fresh in the 4th quarter of games. I liked the hurry up change up paired with the decision to have an actual scrimmage as well. Let’s look at the skill guys and how things looked from my view.

RB Canzeri impresses in spring ball

Iowa sophomore running back Jordan Canzeri looked like his old self after missing all of last season because of a knee injury, making swift cuts and displaying significant acceleration Saturday in the spring game at Kinnick Stadium.

His performance was well received, both by fans and coaches who watched him. Some of his family even traveled all the way from his hometown of Troy, N.Y., to watch him scrimmage.

''Since I'm from New York, I don't really get to see my family that often,'' Canzeri said. ''When they come out here, I hope I can do a good enough job and do well for them when I see them. They make me want to play even better.''

Canzeri handled the ball nearly 20 times, often bouncing to the outside for solid gains. On his third touch, he appeared stuffed on the right hash mark before bouncing back around to the left. Canzeri soared downfield for a 22-yard gain.

His showing was highlighted by a touchdown catch-and-run from quarterback C.J. Beathard.

Iowa Hawkeyes’ new but weird sleeved jerseys

Via Black Heart Gold

You can probably tell by now that these are not really awesome. In fact they are quite ugly, but I do think the design is clever and succeeds in the pizazz Nike was looking for. These are just a prototype right now and they are planning to rock these in October. Are you a fan of the new sleeved look?
“What you are looking at is a prototype, of course, but the basic concept is there. We felt that the old uniforms suffered from two defects: 1) they barely referred to the Hawkeye nickname, and 2) they lacked pizazz. We solved both problems with a bold image, front and center, of the team mascot. We also added exclamation points to the team name and a new team motto – “caw CAW!” – that we feel add much needed pep.”
Nike designer Christopher Polyblend
The other noticeable change fans may notice in the uniform is the long sleeves. “I was inspired by the Golden State Warrior’s recent decision to go with a sleeved jersey design,” said Polyblend. “My thinking was: th...

Is There Hawktimism for 2013?

The Iowa Hawkeyes had a football practice in West Des Moines this past Sunday and over 8,000 fans showed up. The sun was not shining and the skies were threatening rain in the hours leading up to the practice and it was raining before it was over. Had it been a sunny day, there might have been more than 10,000 people there.
While that’s not as many people that will show up for the Alabama spring game or a few others, it’s a pretty good showing for the ninth practice of spring football 90 minutes away from campus on a rainy, dreary April day following a 4-8 season.
I thought about that in the days leading up to the practice, when HyVee went through thousands of tickets in a matter of days. Things just weren’t adding up.
I spend most of my ‘fan association’ with folks on the message boards, phone callers on the radio and on via social media on platforms like twitter and facebook. If I allowed my opinion of fan sentiments to be formed solely from those corners of the world, I’d bel...

Alford's UCLA hire opens barely closed wounds at Iowa

The Steve Alford era at Iowa - it's a touchy subject for any Hawkeye fan for things that happened on and off the court in Iowa City and a lot of it surrounds a dip in play from what was happening under Dr. Tom Davis, where winning NCAA tournament games were the norm, rather than the exception.

Usually that's where the ire stops and after time fans in general can let things go, but upon the hiring of Steve Alford as the new UCLA men's basketball head coach this week some deep and troubling wounds that were barely healing were ripped wide open once again.

At Iowa it wasn't just the X's and O's of the game of basketball that got Steve Alford ran out of town on a rail. It was one player and one subject off the court that really irked a lot of folks in the Hawkeye faithful - of course we are speaking of Pierre Pierce and sexual assault.

There are countless stories that never get told about coaches, players, and administrators in college sports and usually it's out

Iowa Football: Jake Rudock set to win QB battle

Iowa quarterback Jake Rudock was named the co-front-runner alongside Cody Sokol to replace James Vandenberg in Kirk Ferentz’s pre-spring depth chart last week, and he believes it’ll stay that way heading into the regular season.

Rudock didn’t see a single snap as a redshirt freshman in 2012, but he’s ready to prove that he can lead the Hawkeyes offense for the next several years.

“I look at it as my position to win,” he told The Gazette. “All of us are looking at it that way. Coaches have told us from Day 1, it’s an open competition. We have to take each day as it comes.”

Whether it is Rudock or Sokol – or even C.J. Beathard – that emerges this spring and takes the starting job this fall, they’ll undoubtedly have their hands full.

Iowa had an extremely difficult time moving the ball last year in all offensive categories. Even Vandenberg – who was thought to be one of the top quarterbacks in the NCAA – struggled big-time with a passing attack that averaged just 187.4 yar

Hawkeyes Headed to NIT Final Four

Iowa beat Virginia 75-64 on Wednesday night to advance to the NIT semifinals for the first time in school history. Iowa will meet second-seeded Maryland on Tuesday, April 2, in Madison Square Garden.
Devyn Marble turned in his third-straight scintillating performance, scoring 24 points, dishing out five assists, recording three steals and three boards with just two turnovers. That matches his 24 points from Iowa’s win against Stony Brook and the 28 he put up in Iowa’s first NIT game against Indiana State. When you toss in his NIT game against Oregon last year, he has scored 107 points in NIT games in his career, or 9.6% of the 1,107 career points he has scored as a Hawkeye. He now has 527 points during this junior year in 35 games played, bettering the 522 scored by his father Roy during his junior year.
Since moving over to the poing guard position nine games ago for the injured Mike Gesell, Marble has averaged 18.6 points per game and has grabbed 37 rebounds and dished out 34...

Former Iowa Hawkeyes Cheerleader, Miss Iowa ’12, into fitness modeling (pics)

The Iowa Hawkeyes have had a mediocre season of college basketball. Definitely a down year by their usual standards. No one’s expecting them to do much in college football next fall because this year was a disaster. They have some nice looking cheerleaders though. And one Iowa Hawkeyes cheerleader in particular has big goal. Iowa Hawkeyes cheerleader Rebecca Hodge, who’s becoming a fitness model after graduation. Rebecca Hodge won the Miss Iowa USA 2012 despite never having ever previously competed in a pageant before.
A co-worker recommended she compete in the pageant, after having received a letter about it.

“My friend thought I would be perfect for it and told me I needed to try out. I thought, `I’m not one of those girls’…but I guess I am,” HawkeyeSports.com
Then again, how much training and preparation do you need? Either you “got it” or you “don’t got it.” I’m sure the rookie from Iowa City, home of the Hawkeyes, winning the pageant probably burned up some of the veterans. Reb

University of Iowa Baseball Players Haunted by Ghost Which Steals Girlfriends’ Underwear

Who you gonna call, University of Iowa baseball players? Apparently six members of the Iowa Hawkeyes have already phoned up the real-life equivalent of the Ghostbusters, according to the Daily Iowan, who confirmed that the players are living with two other roommates they didn’t even know about. Paranormal researchers say there is a long-deceased little girl and grandfatherly man also inhabiting their space. “We’ve lived here over the past two years,” said junior pitcher Aaron Smit. “But over the past few months, we noticed things getting a little bit weird. We had a kid in here who thought he saw a ghost — a shadow in a form of a human.” In addition to your run-of-the-mill poltergeist interactions — objects seemingly moving around rooms, television channels switching without any seeming reason — at least one players says he actually saw the little girl in his bedroom, and everyone in the house claims to have heard once incident involving the slamming of an upstairs door multiple tim...
