ASU softball wins again, reaches Super Regional

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State advanced to the Super Regionals of the NCAA softball tournament by eliminating Georgia with a 2-0 win Sunday in the Tempe Regional at Farrington Stadium.

Dallas Escobedo once again dominated on the mound, improving to 3-0 on the weekend behind another complete game while holding Georgia (40-21) scoreless for the second consecutive contest. Escobedo gave up just three hits with five strikeouts and no walks in seven innings of play for ASU (48-10).

The junior has now pitched 31 consecutive innings without giving up an earned run. In the three regional games over the weekend, Escobedo (28-4) gave up a total of five hits.

Starting pitcher Chelsea Wilkinson (8-6) took the loss for Georgia, giving up two runs in one inning before being removed in favor of Morgan Montemayor, who finished off the final six innings.

The Sun Devils got all the runs they'd need in the first inning. Alix Johnson reached on a walk and advanced on a stolen base, and after a flyout by Cheyenne Coyle, A

Arizona holds on for thrilling win over ASU

TEMPE, Ariz. It was as easy as 1-2-3.

That was how the Arizona baseball team escaped a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth inning, holding on to upend 15th-ranked Arizona State 7-6 and capture a series-clinching victory on Sunday at Packard Stadium.

The Sun Devils trailed by a run entering the bottom of the ninth inning. Kasey Coffman singled, and Michael Benjamin reached on a bunt single after a miscommunication prevented the Wildcats from recording an out on the sacrifice bunt attempt.

Facing senior reliever Augey Bill, ASU's James McDonald then tried to move the runners on a sacrifice attempt of his own, but first baseman Joseph Maggi charged the play hard, came up with the bunt and fired to third to retire the lead runner, leaving runners on first and second with one out.

Bill then walked Max Rossiter, which loaded the bases and put the tying run on third and the winning run on second for Nathaniel Causey, who was 0 for 3 entering the final at-bat.

Causey chopped an 0-1 pitch back to the

ASU scores three in eighth to pull away from UA

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State scored three runs in the eighth to break open a tie game en route to a 6-3 win over Arizona on Saturday night in front of a season-high 4,304 fans at Packard Stadium.

The Sun Devils (34-16-1, 15-11 Pac-12) used a bases-loaded walk from designated hitter Nate Causey and a two-run single by right fielder Trever Allen to put three runs on the board in the eighth inning and tie the Territorial Cup season series at two games apiece.

Starting left-hander Ryan Kellogg did not allow an earned in 6 23 innings but earned a no-decision after a throwing error in the top of the seventh gave Arizona (30-21, 11-15 Pac-12) a run. He threw six shutout frames before the unearned run in the seventh, and he left having allowed six hits to go along with one walk and three strikeouts.

Right-hander Ryan Burr (4-2) earned the win after striking out the side in the ninth and throwing 1 13 prefect innings. He took the mound with two outs in the eighth and induced a groundout to strand a runner at seco

Arizona withstands ASU's rally thanks to great catch

TEMPE, Ariz. The Arizona baseball team surged to a nine-run lead but needed a sensational diving catch from Johnny Field in the eighth inning and a save from scheduled Sunday starter Tyler Crawford to hold off 15th-ranked Arizona State in a 10-7 victory Friday night at Packard Stadium.

ASU (33-16-1, 14-11 Pac-12) dug itself out of a 9-0 hole by scoring two runs in the third and fourth innings, respectively, before tacking on three more in the eighth to cut the deficit to 10-7.

The three-run inning could have been much worse for the visiting Wildcats, who received a sterling defensive play from Field to end the eighth frame.

With the bases loaded and two outs, Nathaniel Causey drove a deep fly ball to straightaway centerfield. Field initially froze to get a read on the ball, then quickly turned and sprinted toward the outfield wall before diving head-first onto the warning track. As Field crashed to the ground and slid toward the fence, he pulled the ball out of his glove and raised it for the umpires and

Former ASU starter Gordon transfers to Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) -- Evan Gordon is headed home.

Indiana announced Thursday that the former Arizona State guard, who announced he was leaving the program about two weeks ago, will transfer to Bloomington and enroll in graduate school so he can be eligible immediately next season.

I have decided to become a Hoosier this coming season @iubloomington iubb @ourindiana @indianambb hoosiernation Evan Gordon (@EvanGordon10) May 15, 2013
Gordon, an Indianapolis native, is the brother of former Indiana star and NBA guard Eric Gordon. He left the Sun Devils after just one season in which he averaged 10.1 points -- the third-highest total on the team -- along with 2.9 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.3 steals

Gordon will help fortify an Indiana roster that will look very different next season. Victor Oladipo and Cody Zeller declared for the NBA draft, three seniors graduated and Maurice Creek and Remy Abell have announced their intentions to transfer.

Gordon started his career at Liberty University in Virginia befor

Evan Gordon Transfers To Indiana

Evan Gordon has committed to Indiana, transferring from Arizona State.
Gordon, younger brother of Eric Gordon, will be eligible to play immediately.
“There’s nothing like an Indiana kid playing for IU,” Gordon said. “Coach (Tom) Crean has that program rocking and rolling.”
Gordon began his college career at Liberty for two seasons before transferring to Arizona State. Gordon averaged 10.1 points per game last season for the Sun Devils.
“It’s kind of crazy how I ended up back here (at Indiana),” said Gordon. “When I left Liberty the reason was to play on a bigger stage and it was a better opportunity to do that. This chance at IU just kind of came about and was hard to turn down.”

Gordon leaving Arizona State

Arizona State guard Evan Gordon is leaving the program after playing one season.

Sun Devils coach Herb Sendek announced Gordon's decision during a teleconference with fans Wednesday night.

A 6-foot-1 guard, Gordon started 25 games and was Arizona State's third-leading scorer with 10.1 points as a junior last season. He sat out the previous year after transferring from Liberty.

Gordon recently graduated and could possibly play for another school, but might have to get clearance from the NCAA since he already transferred once.

ASU unveils redesigned Sparky mascot (again)

In the latest chapter of the Sparky redesign saga, Arizona State on Wednesday revealed the latest update to the Sun Devil mascot, this version the result of an online fan vote.

ASU powers past Stanford, reaches 30-win mark

Box score
TEMPE, Ariz. -- The eighth-ranked Arizona State baseball team hit three consecutive home runs on five pitches in the bottom of the second to highlight an eight-run inning en route to an 11-8 win over Stanford on Sunday at Packard Stadium.

The Sun Devils (30-14-1, 12-9) hit three home runs in one inning for the first time since April 13, 2008, as they picked up their 30th win of the season. ASU has now notched 51 consecutive 30-win seasons, the most in the NCAA, and has won at least 30 games in 52 of the program's 54 years of competition.

Catcher Max Rossiter, designated hitter RJ Ybarra and right fielder Trever Allen each homered in the second inning to give the Devils a six-run lead. Rossiter tied a season high with three RBI on a pair of hits, Allen went 2 for 4 with two RBI and two runs scored, and center fielder Kasey Coffman added two hits and drove in two runs.

Allen led off the second inning with a single, and first baseman Dalton DiNatale followed with a double before left fielder Ja

UA softball rallies from eight down, stuns ASU

TUCSON, Ariz. Down eight runs early, Arizona softball rallied for a thrilling 10-9 walk-off win over Arizona State on Friday.

The Wildcats rallied with the help of a pair of two-run homers by Chelsea Goodacre, then finished off the comeback on Hallie Wilsons two-out, game-winning single in the bottom of the seventh inning.

UA plated three in the third inning, one in the fourth, two in the fifth, three in the sixth and one in the seventh to earn the come-from-behind victory.

The Cats (29-22 overall, 6-13 Pac-12) scored nine runs on nine hits off Sun Devils starter Dallas Escobedo, who entered the game with a 2.16 ERA. The nine runs and nine hits were season worsts for Escobedo, who took a no-decision. Additionally, the Pac-12s strikeout leader registered just three strikeouts on the night. She was relieved in the sixth inning by Mackenzie Popescue, who gave up a run on three hits and took the loss, dropping to 17-4 on the year.

ASU's rally comes up short against Stanford

TEMPE, Ariz. -- The eighth-ranked Arizona State baseball team brought the tying run to the plate in the final inning but couldn't complete its rally in a 5-3 loss to Stanford on Friday night in front of 3,305 fans at Packard Stadium.

Starting pitcher Trevor Williams and relievers Matt Dunbar and Darin Gillies held the Cardinal scoreless for the final six innings, but the Sun Devils (29-13-1, 11-8) could not overcome an early five-run deficit.

ASU trailed 5-0 after the top of the fourth frame, then scored two runs in the bottom of that inning and one in the seventh to get within 5-3. The Devils had the tying run on base in both the seventh and eighth innings and brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth before succumbing.

The pitching staff tied a season high with 12 strikeouts, including seven by Williams (5-4), who took the loss after conceding five runs on nine hits and three walks in six innings.

There were a combined seven strikeouts through the first two scoreless innings before the Cardina

Sun Devils plan Aug. 12-17 stay at Camp Tontozona

Arizona State on Wednesday announced the dates for its football team's second trip under coach Todd Graham to fabled preseason training ground Camp Tontozona.

The Sun Devils will train at the retreat near Payson from Aug.12 to Aug. 17, one day longer than last year's stint, with the annual fall scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 17. Graham has previously expressed interest in an even longer stay at Tontozona, but players' summer school schedules make that difficult.

The tradition was revived last season after Graham routinely heard from fans and alumni calling for its return. To fund the necessary upgrades to the mountain property, which had not been used since 2007, Graham and ASU launched the "Return to Camp T" campaign, ultimately raising more than 150,000.

"I've stated many times that I love the traditions of college football," Graham said in a statement Wednesday. "Camp Tontozona for ASU is one of those iconic traditions. I want to take my teams to Camp T because tha

Sun Devils rally for 7-5 victory over Wildcats

TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona State rallied from a pair of deficits to defeat Arizona 7-5 in a non-conference baseball game on Tuesday night at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson.

The Sun Devils (29-12-1, 11-7) pushed across two runs in the eighth inning to break a 5-5 tie en route to their fifth consecutive victory. They finished April with a 14-4 record, their most wins in April since 1988.

Right-hander Darin Gillies (2-2) got credit for the win and right-hander Ryan Burr recorded his 10th save of the season with a flawless ninth inning. Freshman first baseman Dalton DiNatale led the way offensively with three RBI.

Arizona scored three times off ASU starter Zak Miller in the first inning, but ASU battled back with one in the second in three in the third -- highlighted by Jake Peevyhouse's home run.

Riley Moore put Arizona back in front with a two out, two-run single in the fifth, but ASU tied it in the next inning when Mike Benjamin singled in Nate Causey, who had tripled.
