ASU Basketball lands JC Guard McKissic

Coming across junior college transfers who have one year of eligibility left is quite rare, but with the makeup of its roster it made sense for Arizona State to pursue such prospects. Shaquielle McKissic, a 6-5 200-pound guard from Edmonds (Wash.) Junior College fit that description and following a visit to Tempe which ended earlier today he decided to pledge to the Sun Devils.

Softball coach Clint Myers leaves ASU for Auburn

Arizona State softball coach Clint Myers, who led the Sun Devils to Women's College World Series championships in 2008 and 2011, has left the program to accepted the same position at Auburn, ASU confirmed Friday morning.

"This was a family decision," Myers said in a statement. "My sons (Casey and Corey) will be coaching with me at this new position. I am thrilled that in the final years of my coaching career that I will be able to mentor and help my sons to start their own college coaching careers."

Myers took ASU to the WCWS seven times in his eight seasons, going 427-102 during his stint in Tempe. He had a 53-15 postseason record, including 30-3 at home.

"Clint has elevated our program to be one of the best, if not the best, in the nation, the past eight years," ASU vice president for athletics Steve Patterson said. "Because of his efforts, the Sun Devil head coaching position also is one of the best in the nation, and we will proceed to hire a great fit for Arizona

Photo: NC State Football Has An Awesome Sign Hanging In Its Meeting Room

Yesterday on College Spun, we showed you some pretty cool motivational workout shirts that the Arizona State football team had made up. Now, it’s NC State’s turn to showcase wisdom.
Frisman Jackson is the wide receivers coach at NC State, and was formerly an NFL receiver for the Cleveland Browns. Today, he tweeted out a picture of a sign that hangs in the football meeting room:

Sign in my meeting room….reminder to my players twitter.com/Frisman88/stat…

Pretty typical advice right there, but important nonetheless. I particularly like the “Speak for Yourself” bit at the bottom.

Photo: Arizona State Football Has Sick New Camo Workout Shirts That Will Motivate Players

Each year, every football program in the country comes up with some type of motto or slogan — it’s just a natural way of motivating players and keeping teams focused. Often, these slogans are placed on gear to serve as a visual reminder of the message for the players.
Today, Arizona State’s equipment program Twitter account posted a photo of the football teams summer workout shirts:

@09alum it’s the players summer workout shirts. This is what the back looks like courtesy of @devilstrength twitter.com/SunDevilEquip/…
— SunDevilEquipment (@SunDevilEquip) June 11, 2013

First of all, the shirts are a pretty cool maroon camo — and I’m not normally a big fan of camouflage. However, not only is the color impressive, but the message is as well. College football is often accurately described as “a grind” — the Arizona football team won’t forget the work that it takes to make it through.

Athlon picks ASU in Pac-12 South

A case can be made for Arizona State, UCLA, USC and possibly even Arizona as the team to geat in the Pac-12 South this football season. Each has its strengths and weaknesses.

As summer inches toward fall and the start of training camps, those cases will start to be made, and Athlon Sports weighed in Tuesday with an argument for ASU.

"Ultimately, we picked Arizona State because the Sun Devils have the fewest issues heading into the 2013 season," Athlon's Steve Lassan wrote. "They are set at quarterback with Taylor Kelly, solid at running back and on the offensive line, and the defense, led by Will Sutton, should be strong once again."

The article also contends ASU should have one of the Pac-12's "best front sevens on defense," a fair assessment considering the entire starting line returns, along with three of four starting linebackers.

Here's where we might disagree with Athlon's assessment: "The schedule is also in favor of Arizona State, as Todd Grahams

Arizona State will host Notre Dame in 2014

Arizona State will play Notre Dame at home on Nov. 8, 2014, after the Fighting Irish's move to the Atlantic Coast Conference put the game in danger of being canceled.

Arizona State announced the game had been saved Tuesday.

The game between the Sun Devils and Irish that was scheduled to be played in 2017 at South Bend, Ind., has been canceled.

The schools struck a deal to play the games back in 2008. But with Notre Dame starting to play five ACC teams per season in 2014, it was unclear if the Irish could fit in the Sun Devils.

The teams will also play this season at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Oct. 5.

Arizona State football player accused of assault

Authorities say an Arizona State University football player has been arrested in connection with a sexual assault.

Tempe police said Tuesday that Andres Rafael Garcia is being held on suspicion of two counts of sexual assault and one count of assault/domestic violence.

The 22-year-old defensive back was arrested late Sunday after police say he got involved in an argument with a 21-year-old woman he knew. It allegedly escalated into a physical assault.

Garcia is accused of shoving the woman backward into a wall, knocking her unconscious. Authorities say he then sexually assaulted the woman.

ASU officials say Garcia has been dismissed from the football team. He joined the Sun Devils last season as a non-scholarship player.

ASU keeps Notre Dame game on 2014 home schedule

Arizona State's persistance paid off Tuesday as athletic director Steve Patterson announced that the school had reached agreement with Notre Dame to keep a non-conference game against the Fighting Irish at Sun Devil Stadium in 2014.

Notre Dame, which had tried to back out of a contract between the schools, is dropping a return meeting between the two teams in South Bend, Ind., from its 2017 schedule.

The 2014 game in Tempe has been moved to Nov. 8, two weeks later than originally scheduled.

"We're pleased that Notre Dame was able to resolve its scheduling issues in a way that allows it to play at Sun Devil Stadium in 2014," Patterson said in a statement.

ASU also plays Notre Dame at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, this coming season on Oct. 5 as part of Notre Dame's "Shamrock Series." That game is unaffected.

Notre Dame first notified ASU by phone on April 5 that it wanted to back out of a contract signed in 2008. According to a radio interview Patterson did in Apri

ASU football player dismissed after sexual assault charge

Two Arizona State football players were involved in recent, unrelated police incidents, leading to one of the player's dismissal from the program.

Walk-on defensive back Andres Rafael Garcia was arrested over the weekend in connection to a sexual assault in Tempe and was subsequently dismissed. Garcia joined the team last season as a non-scholarship walk-on and saw action on special teams in eight games.

According to Tempe Police, Garcia, 22, was arrested late Sunday on two counts of sexual assault and one count of assaultdomestic violence related to an incident that occurred early Friday morning.

According to the report, Garcia apparently got into a verbal argument with a 21-year-old woman and ended up shoving the woman backwards into a wall, briefly knocking her unconscious. When the woman regained consciousness, Garcia and others took her to her home, where Garcia and another friend carried her to her bedroom.
EUGENE, Ore. Shelby Houlihan earned All-America honors at 1,500 meters as the Arizona State womens track and field team finished 10th at the 2013 NCAA outdoor championships on Saturday.

The ASU men finished tied for 28th.

Houlihan finished seventh overall in a stacked 1,500-meter race in a time of 4:14.95 in a race in which the first seven positions were separated by less than two seconds. With the result, Houlihan became the just the second Sun Devil to ever score at 1,500 meters in school history; Lisa Aguilera finished eighth in 2000.

Houlihan set the school record in the event earlier this year and ran several races this season that were better than the previous school record held by Priscilla Hein.

Anna Jelmini wrapped up her season with an 11th-place finish in the womens shot put, posting a best throw on the day of 16.34m (53-07.50). She earned second-team All-America accolades in the event just two days after becoming the NCAA individual champion in the discus.

Jelmini wins discus, gives ASU 2 national champs

EUGENE, Ore. -- Arizona State junior Anna Jelmini won her first career national championship Thursday, leading from start to finish to win the discus in the NCAA Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field.

Jelmini's winning distance of 57.95m (195 feet, 1 inch) helped her pull away from the field and remove any doubt as she beat the nearest finisher by more than five feet.

The junior was the favorite in the event as a freshman and sophomore and also led the competition through the first five rounds at those events before lpersonal bests from Northeastern States Tracey Rew in 2011 and San Diego State's Ashley Whitney in 2012 forced Jelmini to settle for runner-up finishes.

Jelmini answered the call on Thursday, though, and as Arizonas Julie Labonte jumped within a couple inches of Jelminis early lead of 56.38m (184-11) on her fifth throw, Jelmini answered on the very next attempt with what would prove to be the winning mark.

Jelmini has now earned eight All-America honors in her career and gi

EUGENE, Ore. - Arizona State University track and field senior Chelsea Cassulo won the national title in the hammer throw on Wednesday at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore.

Cassulo trailed for the majority of the final round of throws as her day's best of 67.35m in the opening round was only good enough for third when she came up her sixth and final throw. There, she launched the hammer 69.12m (226 feet, 9 inches) to jump from third to first and win her first NCAA title in the process.

Cassulo had never trailed in any of her primary meets this outdoor season in the hammer throw and, despite being the national leader in the event, needed to dig deep to surpass Illinois State's Brittany Smith's best throw of the day of 68.51m (224-09).

With the victory, Cassulo became ASU first-ever NCAA champion in the women's hammer throw. She set the school record earlier this year with a mark of 70.07m (229-11) at the NCAA West Prelims, a throw that ranks Cassulo as the sixth

Video: Cute Husky Dog Runs On The Field Of Arizona State And Fullerton Baseball Game

During the Arizona State vs. Cal State Fullerton baseball game last night, the teams and fans had an entertaining surprise in the second inning. Recently, we’ve seen squirrels or birds causing a ruckus on the baseball field, but this time, it was a much cuter little critter – a husky. The canine escaped from its owner and headed straight for the outfield.
The pooch ran around for about a minute, but wasn’t looking to play with any of the players, especially Arizona State’s right fielder. The pup only caused a short delay before exiting the field.
Here’s the video:

Fullerton went on to win the NCAA Tournament regional game, 1-0.
