BASEBALL: Poll gazing

JUST HOW MUCH of a statement did Oregon State make this weekend? Almost all of the top teams in the baseball polls had an abbreviated schedule this weekend, but most of them still lost a game. Will Oregon State's 2-1 road series win, over another highly ranked squad in Oregon, move them up? The best chance for said movement would seem to be in the Baseball America poll.

Markus Wheaton is expected to be behind the learning curve with the Steelers

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Steelers rookie wide receiver Markus Wheaton is expected to fall behind in learning Pittsburgh’s offense since he’ll have to miss this week’s OTA’s.
Adjust to life without Mike Wallace. Wallace is gone and while Emmanuel Sanders is projected to take over his spot at split end at least for one year, third-round pick Markus Wheaton will miss all of the OTAs because final exams at Oregon State aren’t until June 10-14. NFL rules prohibit him from participating until then. That won’t help Wheaton’s learning curve.
Hopefully Wheaton can catch up at some point, since the Steelers are going to need their receivers to step up with Wallace now in Miami.
Wheaton was very productive during his final year at Oregon State. He recorded 91 receptions, 1,244 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Beavs win! Take road series from Ducks

BIG PLAYS WERE all around as No. 4 Oregon State knocked off No. 6 Oregon 12-2 and took the series in Eugene. Michael Conforto went yard with a second inning grand slam to put the Beavs up 6-0. The very next inning, with the bases loaded, CF Max Gordon made a full extension diving stab on a deep ball that likely saved three runs. The win gave the Beavs a two-game edge in the Pac-12 standings.

Beavs back atop the Pac-12 standings after W

THIS ONE WAS BIG. No. 4 Oregon State's 9-0 win over No. 6 Oregon means the worst that can happen after the three-game series in Eugene is that the Beavs will remain tied atop the Pac-12 with a game to go against the two teams -- in Corvallis. And if OSU wins on Sunday, they take a commanding position.

IT WAS A good old fashioned pitcher's duel. Unfortunately for Oregon State, it didn't start on their end until the third inning. The Ducks scored three runs in the first two innings and OSU was unable to get untracked at the plate in a 3-0 loss to Oregon in the first of a three game series. The two schools are now tied atop the standings in the Pac-12.

It's Crunch Time For The Oregon State Beavers

It comes down to this. Civil War Series, baseball style.

This weekend the Oregon State Beavers (41-8 overall, 20-4 league) travel to Eugene to take on the Oregon Ducks (42-11, 19-5 respectively). With only a one game edge in the loss column, the Beavers need to keep their twelve game winning streak going to win the conference title. And a possible national seed for the NCAA Tournament. More on that later.

Fortunately, the Beavs took care of business last weekend down in Palo Alto, sweeping the Stanford Cardinal in a three game set. Furthermore, OSU improved to 21-5 on the road this year. If they ever needed the good fortunes of playing away from home, it will be this weekend. In the last two seasons, the home team has swept their opponent in the Civil War three game series.

Looking at last weekend, Stanford actually put up 11 runs in three games. Other than the debacle at Washington, that is the most runs scored against the Beavers in conference play for any weekend ma...

Civil War Preview: No Predicting The Winner

I was hoping it would come to this.

Early this baseball season, people were talking about how good both Oregon State and Oregon would be in 2013.

While looking at the hot starts for both the Ducks and Beavers, fans would cast one eye on the schedule and see the series between the teams May 17-19 at PK Park. The question that usually went unspoken was ... would a Pac-12 Championship be on the line? Could both teams make the World Series?

Until now, those thoughts were followed by a lot of eye blinking and cobweb-clearing head shakes.

The question can be asked now.

The answer is “yes” to both questions.

But, believe it or not, there is actually more on the line than the league title.

Both Oregon schools are just about guaranteed to host NCAA Regionals in two weeks and both teams have a shot at receiving a national seed from the NCAA.

If one team sweeps (and the home team has swept the last three Civil War series), it may knock the loser out of content...

Beavers and Ducks put Pac-12 focus on Oregon

There's a certain civility to the Civil War baseball rivalry between Oregon and Oregon State.

Since the Ducks brought back baseball in 2009, the rivalry with the Beavers has been growing. But this season both teams are nationally ranked in the top 10 and sit 1-2 in the Pac-12 standings.

The outcome of this weekend's Civil War series between the two teams could lead to the league championship and have postseason implications.

Yet there's no trash talk between the Beavers and the Ducks. Oregon coach George Horton and Oregon State coach Pat Casey agree: This rivalry is really about respect.

Championship Caliber? Oregon State Beavers Might Be Getting There

It has always been the tale that teams who peak at the end of the season are the ones who usually end up as champions. Playing well in the end is where it counts. So, here we go Beavers, here we go.

Last weekend, Oregon State’s baseball team swept California in three games down in Corvallis. They followed that up with a mid-week victory over the Portland Pilots and now have an overall record of 38-8. But with just three weekend series remaining, we will all find out what our beloved Beavers are made of. Because now the road, literally and figuratively, takes on added substance.

This weekend, OSU travels to Palo Alto to take on Stanford (26-17 overall, 11-10 conference). Despite what looks like a mediocre record, looks can be deceiving. This Stanford team has spent a lot of time in the Top 25 this year and had a hard fought series against Oregon, where the Ducks came back twice late to win. To this point in the season, the Beavers are 7-3 against Top 25 opponents. On the pl...

Oregon State Beavers Are Running For Glory

The Kentucky Derby is this weekend and if the Oregon State Beavers baseball team was in a horse race, one could say they are in the final straightaway heading for the far turn. In their peripheral vision is a slight glimpse of the finish line. Longshot? Not likely. Destiny’s darling? Let’s hope so. Flowers, banners, trophy and last but certainly not least, the dog pile. Keeping an eye on the prize. Remember, I’m all in with these guys.

After the team struggled against the lowly Washington Huskies, any nervousness could be understood as OSU took on the USC Trojans. Luckily, the Beavers were facing the team with the worst ERA in the conference and pulled out the sweep, taking the three game set. The team hammered out 34 hits in three games. While USC committed no errors all weekend, OSU had four. Significance? Clearly Pat Casey has the squad minimizing their mistakes. Furthermore, the pitching staff only gave up three walks total in three games and held the Trojans to a total of f...

Brennan was first asked to describe the kind of player that the Steelers drafted.

"He's an outstanding human being," said Brennan. "Just on a personal level, he's got a smile that will light up the room. He has an unreal ability to connect with people and I don't ever remember being around a player that was more liked in the team Read more [...]

Kellogg no-hits Oregon State in ASU's win

Box score

CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Freshman left-hander Ryan Kellogg recorded the ninth no-hitter in school history to lead the 20th-ranked Arizona State baseball team to a 4-0 win over No. 3 Oregon State on Saturday.
