UCLA DE Odighizuwa to sit out 2013 season

UCLA defensive end Owamagbe Odighizuwa will sit out the 2013 season after surgery on his right hip Tuesday. He will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Odighizuwa, who will be a junior this fall, underwent surgery on his left hip during the off-season and did not participate in spring practice. He started experiencing pain in his right hip before spring practice began.

The loss is significant, as Odighizuwa was ticketed to replace Datone Jones at defensive end. Jones was a first-round draft by the Green Bay Packers last month. Odighizuwa saw considerable time last season, finishing with 44 tackles. He had 3.5 sacks and recovered two fumbles.

Odighizuwa's injury hurts a defensive front that has struggled to remain healthy since the season ended.

Nose tackle Ellis McCarthy sat out spring while recovering from minor knee surgery. Defense end Sam Tai was also limited, as he was still recovering from a knee surgery that forced him to miss the 2012 season. Nose tackle Brandon Tuliaupupu will miss the 2

Rookie DL Jones proving to be quick study in Packers defense

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- As Datone Jones opened his Green Bay Packers' defensive playbook for the first time this past weekend, everything looked very familiar. While the rest of the team's rookie class was starting from scratch and learning a new system, Jones was already several steps ahead.
"We ran pretty much the same defense, Dom Capers' defense, at UCLA," Jones said. "The terminology is a little different, but I'm picking it up pretty fast."
Jones' defensive coordinator during his final college season was Lou Spanos, who spent 15 seasons working as a defensive coach with the Pittsburgh Steelers beginning in 1995. Capers, Green Bay's defensive coordinator since 2009, ran Pittsburgh's defense from 1992-94, just prior to Spanos arriving. The two of them have subscribed to the same defensive philosophy ever since.
This was a significant selling point for the Packers when they decided to make Jones their first-round pick in this year's draft. Jones, an athletic 6

Fauria catches on with Lions

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- Joseph Fauria calls himself an eighth-round pick.

The problem is, there are only seven rounds in the NFL Draft.

Fauria, who showed flashes of his pass-catching ability during the Detroit Lions rookie minicamp over the weekend, is clearly using not getting drafted as motivation now.

Ive got a permanent chip on my shoulder, he said following Sundays practice. You look on Wikipedia, itll say undrafted free agent for the rest of my life.

That doesnt define me. Its a small footnote in my life and the rest of my career. Hopefully, its a long career.

Fauria, the nephew of former NFL tight end Christian Fauria, was used as a slot receiver during his senior year at UCLA.

He caught 12 touchdown passes, the same number as West Virginia's Tavon Austin, who was the No. 8 pick overall by St. Louis.

At 6-foot-7, 255 pounds, however, Fauria projects as a tight end in the pros, if he can overcome some obstacles to win a roster spot.

Theres a lot of negatives next to my name, Fauria admitted.

Football is more than a game for UCLA's Morgan

Charles Drakes words to his longtime friend Courtney Morgan were powerful. Concise. Convincing. Also, some of the last words he heard his best friend speak.

He told me do it! Morgan recalls the conversation the two had at Ladera Park in the spring of 2012.

His friend told him, If I had the opportunity, I would do it. Just do it, no matter what you have to do. You know how it is in sports, you have to come in from the bottom.

At the time Morgan, who spent six years working in sales, was debating giving up nearly everything to pursue an opportunity in the UCLA football department as a coaching intern, a position he wound up taking in April 2012.

Less than six months after that conversation, Drake died unexpectedly at the age of 30. Morgan was crushed. The two had been friends since their freshman year at Westchester High School. They were teammates during an era in which the Comets became known for more than just their basketball exploits as they guided the football team through one of the bright eras

UCLA CB Marcus Rios To Miss 2013 Season With deadly Fungal Infection

UCLA cornerback Marcus Rios had dreams of shutting down Pac 12 wide receivers and locking horns with USC wide receiver Marqise Lee.
Rios now will be in for the fight of his life. The L.A. Times is reporting that Rios will miss six months and probably the whole season with a rare and deadly fungus infection in his sinus area.
Rios reportedly has undergone six surgeries to remove the infection since last October. He will undergo another surgery in the next two weeks.
Rios told the L.A Times that “it’s very rare. Only 12 people have ever had it and eight of them have died. Two others recovered and then died later.”

UCLA Cornerback Diagnosed with Deadly Infection

UCLA cornerback Marcus Rios will miss the college football season after he was diagnosed with a very rare, deadly fungal infection.
Rios, projected to be a starting cornerback for the Bruins, originally had a sinus infection that later developed into something more serious. The infection turned into a fungal infection that was found behind his eye and between his brain.
Rios said of the diagnosis, “It’s very rare. Only 12 people have ever had it and eight of them have died. Two others recovered and then died later.”
Rios has spent the majority of the offseason in-and-out of hospitals and is currently taking antibiotics through a PICC, peripherally inserted central catheter, line in his arm. Since Rios has the PICC line in his arm, he said that he cannot do any running and is slated for another surgery.
Coach Jim Mora said that Rios will be out six months and Rios added that he is probably out for the season.
Football has to take a backseat for his health and here's hoping f...

Rios told The Times’ Chris Foster how deadly the disease can be.

NFL Team: Green Bay PackersPick No: 26Player Name: Datone JonesPosition: DESchool: UCLAHeight/Weight: 6’4", 283The Vitals: Jones is a monster. During his Senior year he had 19 tackles for a loss including 6.5 sacks. He is able to find running backs regularly and get them tackled. His size makes him a force to be reckoned with and he joins a Packers defense where he will be plugged in from day one.A better pick would have been: I think that the Packers could have gone a number of different ways here. Jones likely would have been available at the start of the second round, so trading back could have been a nice decision. If they could have gotten the deal that the Vikings were offering for the 29th pick, they would have done well to take it.I would have liked them to give more consideration to Sylvester Williams who went two picks later. They could have also considered a player like Eddie Lacy, although I was glad they decided to wait on that position. The Verdict: Overall I can ce...

PICK: Datone Jones, DE, UCLAANALYSIS: I've been mocking this pick to them for a while, and I really love the fit. He fills Green Bay's biggest need of a pass rushing DE (in the 3-4), he provides good value, and I think he will excel in Green Bay. Not to mention he will also take tons of pressure of Matthews and Perry coming from the OLB position. It was a tossup between Williams and Jones here, but I love this pick.GRADE: A

Video: USC Releases Footage Of Jackie Robinson Playing Football For UCLA

Jackie Robinson, football star? Yup, once upon a time. USC released footage of a game in 1939 between the Trojans and the UCLA Bruins, Robinson’s team, which resulted in a 0-0 tie but had some pretty good action.
In the video, you can see Robinson break a few tackles and launch a vicious hit to pop the ball loose when USC was threatening to score.
As great as Robinson looks on the gridiron, it’s probably safe to say that he made the right call becoming a professional baseball player.

UCLA's Muhammad to enter NBA draft

UCLA freshman Shabazz Muhammad announced Tuesday that he will enter the NBA draft.

Muhammad has been expected to declare for the draft. He needed to drop his classes by April 19 or he would have been given an incomplete, which would have counted against UCLAs academic progress rate.

While he attended Las Vegas Bishop Gorman, Muhammad was considered among the top two high school players in the nation. He spent one hectic season in Westwood.

The NCAA held up his eligibility, forcing Muhammad to miss the first three games of the season.

That investigation ended in embarrassment for the NCAA after a report that a friend of an NCAA employee involved in the investigation had been overheard on an airplane saying the NCAA would find Muhammad ineligible.

Because the conversation was overheard in August, only eight days after the NCAA first requested information from Muhammad's family and long before any was received, suspicions shifted to the NCAA and whether its investigators had prejudged Muhammad.

Tony Parker is staying at UCLA

Tony Parker was disgruntled during his freshman season for the Bruins and seemed like a lock to transfer schools. But it looks like that is no longer happening.
The big man from Atlanta tweeted Sunday night to say he’s a Bruin:
UCLA I’m a Bruin
— tony parker (@tonyparker32) April 8, 2013

The tweet seemed like a strong sign that Parker would be staying in Westwood. Georgia 247 Sports reporter Gentry Estes says Parker’s father confirmed the forward would stay with UCLA. Estes also says new UCLA coach Steve Alford met with Parker’s family over the weekend at the Final Four, which helped convince the big man to stay.
The news seems good for UCLA on the surface, but Parker really needs to show he can play. Despite being a top recruit entering the season, Parker only averaged 2.4 points and 1.2 rebounds while playing 6.3 minutes per game. He was hardly a factor for the Bruins.
Getting Parker to stay is a good sign, but the real trick would be if Alford could get Parker to produce.

UCLA star's age misrepresented?

Tweet UCLA star forward Shabazz Muhammad, one of the best freshmen men’s basketball players in the country and potential top-five NBA draft pick, is not the age of 19 as UCLA’s media guide lists. Muhammad instead was born in 1992, not 1993 as listed and his father Ron Holmes attempted to cover it up. Here [...]

Ben Howland throws jacket into stands

Oregon and UCLA clashed in the Pac 12 Tournament championship game Saturday night. With the Ducks leading 25-19 in the first half, Bruins freshman phenom Shabazz Muhammad streaks toward the basket on a fast break, before eventually being called for a charging foul. His head coach, Ben Howland, doesn't like the call at all. To show his displeasure, he rips off his jacket and proceeds to deposit it into the stands behind the UCLA bench. How is that for a souvenir!Howland probably wasn't pleased with the game's end result, either. Oregon cruised to a 78-69 win to capture the conference tournament title.
