UCLA Outduels NC State in 2-1 CWS Victory

After a surprising, yet impressive victory over the LSU Tigers on Sunday (which would ultimately lead to the Tigers’ elimination on Tuesday), the UCLA Bruins continued with a 2-1 victory over the NC State Wolfpack, inching their way closer to the College World Series championship series. The Wolfpack struck first, starting off the the third inning with the bases loaded, wherein Trea Turner would rip an RBI single to left field, scoring Bryan Adametz and giving the Wolfpack an early 1-0 lead.Despite being held scoreless for the first four innings, UCLA would rebound in the top of the fifth with a two-run charge led by a Kevin Kramer RBI single that scored Cody Regis, followed by a wild pitch by Wolfpack reliever Grant Sasser that allowed Brenton Allen to score, giving the Bruins a 2-1 lead. The game would witness no further scoring from the fifth inning on, as both teams would witness solid pitching from their bullpens (and in UCLA’s case, a valiant performance from starter Nick Vander...

Shabazz Muhammad is determined to silence his critics

via USA Today

Shabazz Muhammad was once the top prospect in high school. He slid to number two when Nerlens Noel re-classified and joined this batch instead of 2014. Yet, Shabazz was still coveted, and was the subject of a fierce recruiting war between Duke, Kentucky and UCLA. There were rumors that he chose UCLA because it is an Adidas sponsored school, while the other two are strong Nike schools.
The question is, how come Nerlens Noel is at the top of the mock draft (even if he’s injured) and Shabazz is way down at 9-13 spot? Shabazz is probably one of the most criticized players, and while no one questions his talent, doubts have been raised about everything else.

per USA Today:

As the basketball world centers on the NBA draft prospects, nobody is more used to being in the spotlight than guard Shabazz Muhammad. Basketball has been more than a game for him since 2009, when he was named the nation’s No. 1 player in his class as a freshman.

Shabazz Muhammad Says He’s Underrated

The 2013 NBA Draft is s little over two weeks away now, and with no clear-cut #1 pick, the rumor mill and guessing should heat up in the next week or so.
Former UCLA forward Shabazz Muhammad thinks highly of his skills, and is using the perceived disrespect of his game as fuel for the coming weeks.
Muhammad spoke with USA Today this week, and besides wanting to be the #1 pick, he thinks his game is vastly underrated.
“It motivates me a lot,” he says of the criticism he took last season. “Looking at it, I know what I’m capable of doing. The criticism is something that I have to deal with being the player that I am.”
“I think I really had an underrated season,” Muhammad says. “I think, to be honest, I had a really good season. As a freshman, too. But, like I said, all the hype and all that other stuff gets to you. I thought we should have won more games, but I thought I did really well.
LSU offense and defense fail, Tigers fall to UCLA

So things didn't exactly go as planned Sunday night in Omaha. LSU fell 2-1 to the UCLA Bruins thanks to uncharacteristic defensive miscues and an offense that couldn't put a runner in scoring position in the latter innings. Even Aaron Nola wasn't lights out, but he didn't allow an earned run, again. More past the break.

There are easy places to point fingers, but none of them, taken singularly, are the sole culprit. Mainieri had Rhymes bunting with one on and no outs in the ninth, but when Rhymes got into a 2-0 count Mainieri took the bunt off, promptly allowing Rhymes to hit into another signature double play. Thi wasn't a bad call in and of itself, Rhymes is one of the best hitters on the team with a favorable count. You let him swing away there.

Ty Ross's throwing error down the first base line set up UCLA's first run of the night when they got a sac fly. UCLA's second run was scored when Alex Bregman looked like a freshman (a rare, rare ...

Timberwolves intrigued by Shabazz Muhammad's scoring

MINNEAPOLIS -- No, Flip Saunders isn't comparing Shabazz Muhammad to Michael Jordan. And no, the Minnesota Timberwolves' president of basketball operations didn't heavily tip his 2013 NBA draft-day hand Sunday morning.
Muhammad's pre-draft workout with the Timberwolves does, however, offer up the small forward position as potential top-pick material when June 27 gets here.
Tunnel vision eyeing only positional needs can be detrimental, Saunders said.
"You're gonna take your best player, when it comes down to it," Saunders said from the Target Center's Lifetime Fitness center Sunday following an 8:30 a.m., 3-on-3 scrimmage and shooting session. "You have needs, and you want to try to get needs, but if there's somebody you feel is going to be a top-flight guy, then you take him."
The late former Portland Trail Blazers general manager Stu Inman surely would agree.
In 1984, U.S. Olympic coach Bob Knight told his friend Inman it'd be foolish not to snag Jordan with

UCLA has unfinished business in College World Series

In their second trip to the College World Series in as many years, the UCLA Bruins are in Omaha, Neb., with the goal of finishing what was started on last year's trip.

"We have a little bit of unfinished business," said sophomore relief pitcher David Berg. "This time around, we're really focused on getting the job done and getting that first national championship in program history."

The Bruins face LSU on Sunday at 5 p.m. ET, at T.D. Ameritrade Park.

The 2012 Bruins looked to have set the tone with a strong open in the College World Series when UCLA's all-time postseason wins leader Adam Plutko limited the Cinderella team of the event, Stony Brook, to just one earned run in a 9-1 win.

But the Bruins then fell to eventual champion and Pac-12 foe Arizona and were eliminated by Florida State. It was a much different team in a much different frame of mind.

"Last year, we were really happy to be there. The juniors last year went as freshmen and were really happy to kind

The UCLA Bruins would score all three of their runs in the first inning and would never look back, shutting out the Cal State Fullerton Titans 3-0 and advancing to the College World Series for the second straight year. After topping the Titans in ten innings on Friday for a game one victory, the Bruins had a much easier go-around in game two. UCLA starting pitcher Nick Vander Tuig went 6 1/3 scoreless innings, surrendering eight hits and striking out four batters while walking none. The Bruins bullpen would take it from there, working a combined 2 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball, highlighted by David Berg retiring the final five batters (each batter he faced) of the game. The Bruins opened the game with urgency, as Pat Gallagher ripped a two-out single to center that scored Eric Filia and Pat Valaika. Shane Zeile would follow Gallagher with a RBI single, scoring Kevin Williams and extending the Bruins’ lead 3-0.Although the Titans were ousted from the NCAA Tournament, game two was cl...

No. 8 UCLA eliminated No. 3 Cal State Fullerton from the posteason Saturday night with a 3-0 shutout in the second game of the Fullerton Super Regional at Goodwin Stadium, to advance to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb., for the second-straight year and for the third time in four years.

All weekend, UCLA made the impossible look possible. The Bruins handed the Titans a team that won 51 games their first series loss of the season and did so on the Titans home turf.

Whenever you get to Fullerton and win two games to beat what I think is the best team in the country says a lot about their character, their discipline, their habits you name it, we did, said UCLA head coach John Savage. I think we earned it On to Omaha.

On paper, the Bruins team batting average, ranked 250th in the country, didnt look like much but all weekend UCLA found ways to extract the most out of the baserunners they did

Time for Muhammad to be player, not phenomenon

This is not about basketball. This is about a phenomenon.

Shabazz Muhammad is a basketball player. Hes a good one, a likely first-round pick in Junes NBA Draft. He has his flaws, of course, his size and his lack of defense and the rumored teamwork issues.

Even so, hell be a first-round pick.

Which leads us to the Shabazz Muhammad Im concerned with here. Not the basketball player. The phenomenon.

On Thursday, not even three months after Muhammad aged a year in the course of a day thanks to the L.A. Times discovery of his birth certificate, another wrinkle emerged in the story of the former UCLA swingman. His father, Ron Holmes, was charged with fraud.

Thats the same father who at first denied that Muhammad was 20, not 19, until he realized his case was sunk and admitted it. Hes the one who engineered the lie about the age, after all, the one whos been treating his son as a basketball commodity to be marketed and promoted since Muhammad was a child.

Hes the one responsible for Shabazz Muhammad, phenomeno

Shabazz Muhammad’s Dad Charged with Federal Bank Fraud

UCLA one-and-done star and probable NBA lottery pick, Shabazz Muhammad is in the news for reasons that have very little to do with him. His dad, Ronald Holmes was indicted Thursday on federal bank fraud and conspiracy charges, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
From LVRJ:
The indictment states that Holmes and his partners obtained “mortgage loans by fraudulent means to buy houses,” from 2006 to 2009.
The U.S. attorney’s office is seeking to recover $2.5 million from Holmes. Shabazz, 20, played one year at UCLA before declaring for the NBA draft. UCLA recruited him while he played for Bishop Gorman High School. Rashad, 18, who also played for Bishop Gorman, will attend San Jose State on a basketball scholarship in the fall.
In 1999, Holmes plead guilty to using fraudulent back statements to get mortgages. He had to pay $78,000 out as restitution to the banks that he took money from. In addition, Shabazz Muhammad’s family was investigated by the NCAA for financial dealings bef...
