USC Head Coach Lane Kiffin has Considered Coaching at Smaller School

USC head coach Lane Kiffin has found his job security questioned on numerous account heading into this upcoming college football season. If you remember, Kiffin’s Trojans were ranked #1 in the preseason this past year and was thought to be a favorite for a national title. We know how things turned out though, as the Trojans finished the season outside the top 25 and lost in the Sun Bowl to Georgia Tech.
So while talking with Ralph Russo of the Associated Press, Kiffin talked about the possibility of taking a much lower profile job in his future.

Kiffin and USC strive for drama-free 2013 season

Lane Kiffin has an idea.

He's not serious about it. Not really. There is, however, just a hint in his voice that suggests he's not totally joking, either.

''I did think the other day what it would be like to be a high school head coach or to be at a small school,'' Kiffin said. ''I thought about it the other day. The first time. I wonder if there's something to that peace of mind. Maybe it's something I can go back and do when I get older. I'm going to go coach high school.

''It's just the game. It's the game in its realest sense and it's fun. Working with the kids and not all this other stuff. You go back and have fun.''

If Kiffin's Trojans have another season like last year, he may not have to wait long to give high school a try.

Nonetheless, on this day, with spring practice fading in the rearview mirror, it'd be hard to find a guy on the USC campus in a better mood than the Trojans' football coach.

Kiffin to coach at small school?

If you ever thought the pressure of coaching at USC might get to head coach Lane Kiffin, you might have been right. Kiffin admitted that he has at least mulled the idea of coaching at a lower profile school, or even a high school, in an interview with Ralph Russo of the Associated Press. “I did think the other day what it would be like to be a high school head coach or to be at a small school,” Kiffin said in the AP story. “I thought about it the other day. I’m going to go coach high school.” If 2013 does not go well, could Lane Kiffin be at a smaller school in 2014?
Video: Someone Made A Ridiculous Lane Kiffin Rap Song

It was only a matter of time before USC head coach Lane Kiffin was back in the news. This time though, it really isn’t his fault.
We have no idea why, but rappers Zander K and Ceddy Gomez decided to create this song named after Lane.
While it may not be the best rap ever, at least the production quality is pretty good. Have a listen:

Kiffin in search of physical balance

Health, or lack thereof, was a major concern for USC during spring practice.

By the time they reached the spring game in April, they couldnt do any hitting and barely had enough players to participate. Former offensive lineman Jeremy Galten was even brought back to play tight end.

During that game, 20 players, including 16 on scholarship, were out due to various injuries.

It wasnt like we were holding guys so they wouldnt get hurt, USC head coach Lane Kiffin said. There were 20 guys that could not play.

As tough as that was to handle, Kiffin is very optimistic about his teams health heading into the fall.

Despite so many players being hurt during the spring, only one, wide receiver George Farmer who tore his ACL during spring drills, is expected to be sidelined for the 2013 season. He expects the team to be at or near full strength when fall camp opens in August.

There was a bunch of smaller surgeries that came out of spring, Kiffin said. Those guys will be back even before (the start of fall camp)

Raiders Targeting Matt Barkley At No. 42?

ESPN’s Bill Williamson reports that he’s been “hearing a lot of chatter” that the Raiders could be targeting USC QB Matt Barkley at No. 42 overall.

Williamson adds that Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie was in attendance for Barkley’s Pro Day.

There have been some mixed reports regarding available quarterbacks like Geno Smith and Barkley this morning. Some have mentioned that these guys could be taken within picks No. 33 – No. 39, while others wouldn’t be surprised to see quarterbacks continue to drop in round two.
We have three quarterbacks in the first-seven picks of our recently updated Second-Round Mock Draft.

USC's Dedmon to leave school early for pros

Dewayne Dedmon, a 7-foot center from Lancaster who had one year of eligibility left at USC, decided Wednesday to declare for the NBA draft.

In a quote released by USC, Dedmon said, "It's just my time to chase my dream and go to the NBA. I had a great time at USC and it was a good experience. I had some ups and downs and learned a lot and believe it is best for me to turn professional at this time. I wish USC, new Coach Andy Enfield and all my teammates all the best moving forward."

Dedmon and senior James Blasczyk were suspended for USCs final game a loss to Utah in the opening round of the Pac-12 Conference tournament and they were charged with second-degree assault from an incident that took place during the Trojans final regular-season road trip in Spokane, Wash.

Enfield, who is out of town recruiting, did not immediately respond to Dedmon's decision.

As an underrated passer, Matt Barkley ‘has a personality that is going to take him a long way’ in the NFL

Decision makers across the NFL have differing opinions on Matt Barkley and it’s entirely unknown where the former USC signal-caller will be selected in Thursday’s draft. Despite completing 55-of-60 attempts at Pro Day, Yahoo’s Mike Silver reports a “high-level executive for one quarterback-needy franchise” was so unimpressed by Barkley’s arm strength that he bailed early during the 45-minute workout session in March. On the contrary, one AFC coach has “studied (the 22-year-old Barkley) extensively” and believes the sullied Trojan “has a personality that is going to take him a long way.” The 6-foot-2, 230 pound Barkley, who many wrongly predicted … Continue reading →

Matt Barkley Says USC’s Play-Calling Got Too Predictable

Matt Barkley struggled as a passer during his final season at USC and with hindsight being 20/20, he probably should have come out as a junior.
Several things contributed to Barkley struggling, but one mainly comes to mind when he talked to Yahoo Sports. Barkley who has taken a lot of heat and criticism for forcing throws, told Mike Silver that the “Trojans play calling got to predictable.”
Kiff kind of suited the play-calling toward Marqise,” Barkley says. “It was rough at times, because defenses kinda knew what was coming. It was sort of predictive. Robert Woods is a great player. … You want to be respectful of your coaches, because they are your elders, but when it falls on your shoulders, you probably should get involved.”
Those statements from Barkley indicate his unwillingness to allow his career to suffer because his college coach faltered at times.
Barkley did his best to answer questions about USC without ripping Lane Kiffin. He mostly wishes he had done an...

Kiffin: QB situation 'a great problem to have'

Its not always easy to replace the face of a program. Matt Barkley had been that for USC football for the better part of the last three years.

Finding a replacement for him, however, isnt a pressing issue for coach Lane Kiffin. He is happy with the way the program is headed in that regard.

I do feel like all three of (our quarterbacks) are really good college quarterbacks, Kiffin said. I think thats a great problem to have.

With the coach reiterating that declaration again on Monday, its clear hes yet to make up his mind. The quarterback battle will continue through the summer and into the fall for Max Wittek, Cody Kessler, and Max Browne. All three are listed as co-starters on USCs end of spring depth chart, which was released on Monday.

The coming months will be filled with a review of the spring. The coaching staff will get into the pros and cons of each rep the three quarterbacks took during the spring and will let each one know what he has to improve on in order to be the guy when the Trojans open

Kessler makes statement in USC spring game

LOS ANGELES Before a ball was snapped or a pass was thrown during USCs spring game at the Coliseum on Saturday, Cody Kessler trotted out to midfield where he met his teammate, Hayes Pullard, and the officials.

Much to his surprise, Kessler was ordered by his head coach, Lane Kiffin, to go out and be the captain for the Cardinal team.

Kiffin was like go out there, Kessler recalled with a laugh. It wasnt planned or anything. I was standing next to him at the time and hes like 'just run out there and act like youre a captain.

He played it off well. The celebratory coin toss Kessler took part in actually took longer than his first possession under center on Saturday.

That took all of one play.

Kessler took the snap and found Marqise Lee behind the entire defense for a 70-yard score on the second offensive possession of the game.

Max Wittek got the start but Kessler certainly left an impression during the Trojans annual Spring Game in a 42-36 win for the Cardinal.

Enfield ready to change culture at USC

LOS ANGELES -- The facts are staggering.

USC basketball hasn't been the Elite Eight since 2001, and has advanced to only two Final Fours since 1954.

Across town, UCLA basketball boasts 11 national titles, ten of those thanks to legendary coach John Wooden, and handfuls of conference championships. Here are the opening remarks of new @usc_hoops head coach Andy Enfield: youtu.bey5rvTZ3YeHM EnfieldUSC USC Trojans (@USC_Athletics) April 3, 2013

And this week, in a Hollywood twist fitting of La La Land, both programs made big hires (Steve Alford at UCLA, Andy Enfield at USC) and introduced their new head coaches a day apart.

On Wednesday at USC's Galen Center, a confident Enfield was asked about his first thoughts on the cross-town rivalry.

"I am focused on the future of USC basketball and no one else," said Enfield, admitting he didn't know Alford very well but that he does have great respect for UCLA.

Amanda Marcum Enfield and Layla Kiffin form attractive tandem at USC (Pictures)

When USC announced on Monday night that they have hired former Florida Gulf Coast coach Andy Enfield, they secured more than just the school’s basketball future. In bringing Enfield to Southern Cal, the university has also locked down one of the best-looking WAG tandems in college athletics. Enfield’s former supermodel wife Amanda Marcum Enfield received about as much attention as the 15th-seeded Florida Gulf Coast Eagles did during their improbable run in the NCAA Tournament. If you’ve seen any pictures of her, you understand why. Let us not forget, however, that Lane Kiffin’s wife Layla Kiffin (photos here) is going to give her some strong competition at USC for the title of hottest wife in college sports. Layla and Lane met when they were both 24 and have been married since 2000. Andy and Amanda met in 2003, so the Kiffins have seniority over them as far as length of their relationship is concerned. But having Amanda and Layla on the same team is a major power shift in Division-1...

Kennedy Polamalu and Lane Kiffin reportedly got into fight before bowl game

The recent firing of running backs coach Kennedy Polamalu by USC head coach Lane Kiffin came as a surprise to most people. Kennedy was the only former Trojan player on staff, and he was considered to be a top recruiter. Though his job title listed him as offensive coordinator, that position was held mostly in name since Kiffin called the plays. But it sounds like Polamalu clashed with Kiffin, leading to his dismissal. The Daily News’ Scott Wolf reported late Friday evening that the two had a “heated argument” on Dec. 29, two days before the team’s 21-7 Sun Bowl loss to Georgia Tech. Wolf described the incident as a “fallout.” Kiffin kept Polamalu on staff through national signing day Feb. 6, but he was fired two days later. Wolf says Polamalu learned of his firing by reading the news on the Internet, and that Kiffin never called him. Wolf quotes a source who says that Kiffin may have felt threatened by Polamalu’s outspoken nature. Since we do not know what happened between the two,...
