The first-year Gophers men's basketball coach has already made an impression on campus before coaching a single game at Williams Arena. The 30-year-old Pitino took over the University of Minnesota program after Tubby Smith was ousted following a six-year tenure with the Gophers. It's been nearly two months since Pitino's hiring and the Gophers' roster has already undergone quite the overhaul. Guard Joe Coleman has left the program, as did Minnesota's two original incoming recruits, Alex Foster and Alvin Ellis.
Malik Smith transfers to Minnesota

Guard Malik Smith has signed his tender to transfer from Florida International to Minnesota.

Minnesota announced the completion of the transfer on Monday. Smith is following coach Richard Pitino to the Golden Gophers. He averaged 14.1 points per game as a junior starter for FIU last season. He will be eligible to play right away because FIU will be banned from postseason play next season thanks to poor academic performance under previous coach Isiah Thomas.

Smith hit 96 3-pointers last season. His average of 3.0 3s made per game ranked 16th nationally.

Smith joins guards Deandre Mathieu and Daquan McNeil as members of Pitino's first recruiting class at Minnesota.

Guard Joe Coleman has announced his intention to transfer and forwards Rodney Williams and Trevor Mbakwe have graduated.

Hollins invited to try out for University Games team

MINNEAPOLIS Gophers point guard Andre Hollins has been invited to try out for the World University Games this summer according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
New Minnesota head coach Richard Pitino made the announcement on Friday during a stop in New Ulm for the Gophers' caravan tour. Hollins will take part in training camp from June 24-July 1 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
"Hopefully he makes it, because it will be a great experience for him," Pitino told the Pioneer Press.
As a sophomore last year, Hollins led the Gophers with 14.6 points and 3.4 assists per game. The Memphis native also shot a team-high 41.8 percent from 3-point range and was an 80.6 percent free throw shooter.
Hollins' former teammate, forward Trevor Mbakwe, also participated in the World University Games in 2011 as he was a part of the team that played in China.

2013 Preseason Top 25 Players: No. 19 Zac Epping

We've reached the teens!!! O.k., not sure if that's something to celebrate as most of us wouldn't want to go back for the life of us, but here on the countdown that's a damn good thing. It means we are one step closer to solving the puzzle of who we see as the best player in the Big Ten heading into the 2013 football season.

Yesterday it was the reining player of the year at tight end, Jacob Pedersen, from Wisconsin making an appearance at No. 20. So, it's perhaps only fitting that up next is a player from the Border Battle rivals, Minnesota.

Before we get into the other half of the Battle for Paul Bunyan's Axe, let us remind you of what criteria we used to make our Top 25 list. We used things like importance to your team, overall skill at your position, records set, past performance, conference honors (coaches, media, our list too), and the good old-fashioned eye test.

Now, let us take a look at our 2nd offensive lineman on this list, a name that may surprise a f

Joe Coleman to transfer from Minnesota

Guard Joe Coleman is the first Minnesota player to transfer after the coaching change this season.

The Golden Gophers announced Wednesday that Coleman has been granted a release from his scholarship. The shooting guard didn't see a place for himself in the program following the change from Tubby Smith to Richard Pitino this offseason.

Coleman averaged 8.7 points and 3.6 rebounds as a sophomore last season. He was a regular starter for a team that made the NCAA tournament last season, but proved to be inconsistent from a scoring standpoint. He had 29 at Illinois last season and 23 at Penn State as freshman, but only scored in double digits 11 other times in two seasons.

Coleman was named Minnesota's AP state player of the year in 2011.

Minnesota grants Coleman release after deciding to transfer

MINNEAPOLIS Joe Coleman's time as a Minnesota Golden Gopher is over. The school announced Wednesday that Coleman has been granted his release from the program.
"We wish him the very best in the future," new head coach Richard Pitino said in a statement. "We appreciate the contributions he has given the program the last two years."
As a sophomore last year, the 6-foot-4 Coleman averaged 8.7 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game. The former Hopkins High School star was named Minnesota Mr. Basketball in 2011 and the AP Minnesota Player of the Year, as well as a First Team All-State selection. Scout.com ranked him as a three-star recruit.
There was a belief that Pitino's up-and-down style of play would benefit Coleman during his junior season, but obviously Coleman felt otherwise. The Gophers now have two open scholarships for the 2013-14 season.

Newly installed Minnesota Golden Gophers coach Richard Pitino the Younger announced that Golden Gophers guard Joe Coleman has requested, and received, release from his scholarship.
“Joe Coleman has made the decision to leave the Golden Gopher basketball program. We wish him the very best in the future,” said Pitino the Younger in a prepared statement. “We appreciate the contributions he has given the program the last two years.”

Joe Coleman played in 72 career games for the Gophers, including all 34 last season. He contributed career-highs in multiple categories as a sophomore, including points (8.7 ppg), rebounds (3.6 rpg), assists (1.5 apg), steals (1.1 spg) and minutes played (26.3 mpg). He will leave the program with career averages of 7.2 points and 3.3 rebounds.
Joe Coleman‘s uncle, 6-foot-9 Ben Coleman, also left Minnesota after his sophomore season (1981) & transferred to Maryland. Will Joe Coleman be a part of “Fear the Turtle?” Or is the 6-4 guard headed to St. John’s...

MINNEAPOLIS Minnesota Lynx rookie point guard Lindsey Moore didn't have the chance to be star struck at her first WNBA practice Monday because, well, her idol wasn't there.
Moore grew up idolizing Minnesota point guard Lindsay Whalen, who was sick Monday and missed the team's first practice. One day later, though, Lindsey (Moore) finally got to meet Lindsay (Whalen) as the two took the court for the first time as teammates.
Having grown up watching Whalen during her days at the University of Minnesota and later following her career in the WNBA, the 21-year-old Moore has kept a close eye on Whalen for years.
"I've always been a fan of Lindsay Whalen, so whenever there's a game on with the Minnesota Lynx, I'm always watching," Moore said this week. "It was really cool to hear my name with the Minnesota Lynx because I've been a fan of them.
MINNEAPOLIS The Gophers football team announced Tuesday that it will play a home-and-home series with Texas Christian University beginning in 2014.
The first of the two games will take place in Fort Worth, Texas, on Sept. 13, 2014. Minnesota will then host the Horned Frogs on Sept. 3, 2015 at TCF Bank Stadium. The home game for the Gophers replaces a previously scheduled game against South Dakota State.

In Jerry Kill's second season as head coach last year, the Gophers advanced to their first bowl game since 2009 when they played Texas Tech in the Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas. With a loss in the bowl game, Minnesota finished 6-7 overall. TCU finished the 2012 regular season 7-5 and lost to Michigan State in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl.
MINNEAPOLIS Lincoln Plsek watched the video one time but couldn't bear to watch it again.Like many others across the country, the Gophers sophomore tight end saw the footage of the fertilizer plant exploding in West, Texas, on Wednesday night. For Plsek, however, the tragedy hit close to home his childhood home.Plsek grew up in West, about 2 miles from where the explosion took place. His family and friends were not harmed in the explosion, but the blast reportedly injured more than 100 and killed several although those numbers may continue to rise as the wreckage is sorted through in the next several days. With his hometown on his mind, Plsek still took to the field Thursday with the rest of his University of Minnesota teammates."I tried to block it out," Plsek said. "Before practice, I just told myself I'm going to dedicate this practice to everyone who got hurt and everyone who's died."A fire at the plant and eventually turned into a giant explosion.
Pitino brings FIU recruit McNeil to Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS Richard Pitino has landed his first recruit at Minnesota.
Senior Daquein McNeil, a three-star shooting guard from Vermont Academy, has committed to play for Pitino and the Gophers next season, McNeil's high school coach confirmed. McNeil was originally committed to play for Pitino at Florida International University but will now follow the 30-year-old coach to Minnesota.
The 6-foot-3, 175-pound McNeil has played in the New England Prep School League.
"He can really score in a lot of different ways," said Jesse Bopp, McNeil's coach at Vermont Academy. "He's a kid that's built a reputation of being someone that really values winning, that really understands team and equates success as a player to how his team does."
The Gophers were without any recruits in the 2013 class after head coach Tubby Smith was fired following Minnesota's second-round exit in the NCAA Tournament. Minnesota was expecting the arrivals of Chicago's Alvin Ellis and Alex Foster of Set

Minnesota careful to not look past Yale

MINNEAPOLIS The WCHA Final Five didn't end the way the Gophers would have liked it to, as Minnesota was bounced in the tournament's semifinals. But coach Don Lucia's team has a bigger goal in mind, and the journey to the NCAA championship begins Friday.

Minnesota, a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament, will face Yale in the first round at 1 p.m. CT Friday in Grand Rapids, Mich. Though the two teams have squared off 19 times in their history, this will be the first postseason matchup. The Gophers own a 13-6-0 mark against the Bulldogs, but they'll be aiming to improve their postseason record against Yale to a perfect 1-0.

The Gophers were the top-ranked team in college hockey for a good portion of the year and finished the 2012-13 regular season with a 24-7-5 record. Minnesota went on to sweep Bemidji State in the first round of the WCHA playoffs before losing, 2-0, to Colorado College in the Final Five at Xcel Energy Center.

Yale, meanwhile, finished its regular season 16-10-3 overall and lo

Minnesota sets out to replace Tubby Smith

Throughout his years as an administrator, Norwood Teague has developed a strong network of connections in the college basketball community. Now it's time for the Minnesota athletic director to put that to good use.

Teague has started the process of making his first big hire since he came to Minnesota last year. He made a bold decision to fire men's basketball coach Tubby Smith, and now he is looking for a dynamic replacement to take the Golden Gophers into the upper echelon of the Big Ten.

Teague hasn't put a timetable on the decision, but the clock is ticking. Virginia Commonwealth's Shaka Smart, Marquette's Buzz Williams and former Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders are among the names that have been floated as possible replacements.
