Northwestern baseball plays at Wrigley Field

On Saturday at Wrigley Field, the Northwestern Wildcats took on the Michigan Wolverines in the first game at Wrigley since a contract was signed between the Cubs and Northwestern to allow a variety of NU varsity teams to play at Wrigley, including baseball, softball, lacrosse, and football.

Northwestern won the game 6-0, and the star of the day was starting pitcher Luke Farrell, son of Red Sox manager John Farrell. The younger Farrell threw a complete game shutout, striking out nine without a walk and allowing just three hits in the win for the Cats. But the real star of the game may have been Wildcats sophomore Reid Hunter, who performed a pretty spot-on impression of Harry Caray while reading off Northwestern's starting lineup.

The Cubs influence was strong at Wrigley, with legendary Cubs fan Ronnie Woo Woo in attendance cheering for Northwestern, but some things at Wrigley looked a little different, including flags of the 12 Big Ten schools flying above the center fie...

B1G Spring Football Preview: The Northwestern Wildcats

With the college basketball season officially coming to an end yesterday, fans can completely turn their attention back to football. Good, we’re glad you’re back. Maybe some of you never really left? Maybe some of you have been waiting night and day for our next B1G spring preview? Maybe ya just can’t get enough of the pigskin? We at Know It All Football know how you feel and we’ve got you covered. We’re covering the B1G conference from top to bottom and today we look at the Northwestern Wildcats.
Northwestern
Camp Opens: February 27th
Spring Game: April 13th
There’s a growing feeling around the Northwestern program that the Wildcats are closer to taking another giant step forward in 2013. After a 10-3 season at a school not particularly known for their football success, who could blame them? 2012 could have actually been much better without the late game collapses against Penn State, Nebraska, and Michigan, which resulted in 3 unforgettable losses. Regardless, when you couple the 2...

Northwestern set to interview Chris Collins next week

While Duke is en route to Philadelphia for their 29th NCAA Tournament appearance in the last 30 years, Northwestern University is making a strong push to hire Duke Associate Head Coach Chris Collins. Chicago Tribune’s Teddy Greenstein is reporting that the school has one interview set up with a coaching target, and the former Duke shooting guard is him.

Also: I’m told Chris Collins is the only interview set up by thus far. #Northwestern
— Teddy Greenstein (@TeddyGreenstein) March 20, 2013

There have been reports of late that fellow Duke assistant Jeff Capel is among the targets for Northwestern, who is looking to replace recently fired coach Bill Carmody. However, Greenstein is refuting that report saying the school is not interested in Collins’ former teammate.

And I’m told #Northwestern is not interested in Jeff Capel, whom Oklahoma canned w/5 yrs left on his contract.

Carmody not returning to Northwestern

Sometimes the simplest of statements are the most profound and that's what we got out of the Northwestern Athletic Department as they announced the firing of Bill Carmody as their men's head basketball coach.

Northwestern University Vice President for Athletics and Recreation Jim Phillips has announced that Bill Carmody will not return as the head coach of the Wildcats' men's basketball program.

And with that statement, gone is the 2nd longest tenured coach in he Big Ten. That honor will now belong to Bo Ryan of Wisconsin.

Carmody spent 13 years at the helm in Evanston, compiling a 192-210 record, but a disappointing 13-19 campaign this season (due to injuries and a lack of quality depth), sealed his fate.

Why the change? Well, according to Teddy Greenstein of the Chicago Tribune, this is why:

AD Jim Phillips: "We needed a different voice, a new leader, a change in order to ultimately accomplish our goals." #northwestern

Northwestern fires coach Carmody

Bill Carmody will not return as Northwestern's coach next season, ending a 13-year run in which the Wildcats raised expectations but failed to reach their first NCAA tournament.

The school announced the move on Saturday.

Carmody ranks among the most successful coaches at Northwestern with a 192-210 record. With their Princeton offense and 1-3-1 zone defense, the Wildcats usually were able to hang with more talented teams even if they came up short. But the lack of an NCAA berth ultimately did him in.

The change comes on the heels of a particularly difficult season in which the Wildcats lost their final nine games to finish 13-19 and missed the postseason after four straight NIT appearances, an unprecedented run for Northwestern.

Athletic director Jim Phillips is scheduled to address the move at a news conference Saturday evening.

Whoever replaces Carmody faces some big hurdles, between the high academic standards and facilities that lag behind the rest of the Big Ten, not to mention one big albatross

Northwestern returning to Wrigley Field

1060 West Addison, Chicago, Illinois – Wrigley Field is one of the most storied venues in all of sports. The bleacher seats, hand-turned scoreboard and the ivy covered outfield walls are some of Chicago’s most well known landmarks. Since 1914, Wrigley Field has been home to legendary sports figures like Ernie Banks, Ryne Sandberg, Sammy Sosa, and Harry Carey. Now, Wrigley field will play host to “Chicago’s B1G Team” the Northwestern Wildcats.
The Chicago Tribune reports, Wrigley Field and Northwestern University will announce a broad partnership that will result in Wrigley hosting a number of Northwestern sporting events. The partnership would involve Northwestern baseball, softball, soccer and lacrosse this year. While it is unlikely Wrigley would host any Wildcat football games this year there is speculation that Northwestern football could be hosting games in the “friendly confines” as early as 2014 after Wrigley’s schedule reconstruction is complete. The reconstruction shou...

Northwestern thrilled after holding onto late lead

The Northwestern Wildcats hope they can finally move on from their fourth-quarter struggles.

After holding on for a 23-20 victory over Michigan State on Sunday, the Wildcats are very much in the mix for a quality bowl bid at the end of the season.

Northwestern (8-3, 4-3 Big Ten) blew fourth-quarter leads in losses to Penn State, Nebraska and Michigan, so the Wildcats had reason to be anxious when Michigan State took over at its own 20-yard line with 1:29 remaining, needing a field goal to tie.

But Andrew Maxwell threw four straight incompletions, and now Northwestern can state its case even further to bowl representatives next weekend against Illinois.

Where Was The Purple at Northwestern’s Ryan Field on Saturday?

If fans of Northwestern Wildcats football weren’t sick to their stomach on Saturday, they should have been.
Not because the Wildcats suffered a one-point loss at home to Nebraska 29-28.
And not because Northwestern blew a 12-point lead in the final eight minutes to suffer its second loss in Big Ten play.
In fact, fans didn’t even need to see a single play at Ryan Field to understand what was wrong on Saturday afternoon, they just needed to look at the stadium itself.

Nebraska got to enjoy a Sea of Red even in another team’s stadium on Saturday.
In what might have been Northwestern’s biggest home game of the season, fans should have been covered in purple gear from head to toe, ready to cheer their 6-1 Wildcats on to victory. But instead, the crowd that showed up in Evanston on Saturday was wearing red.
Folks on the television said throughout the game that it felt like a Nebraska home game and that the “Sea of Red” outnumbered the Northwestern faithful in a Big Ten Legends division ...

Fitzgerald welcomed three members of the Navy SEALs unit to speak to the team about mental toughness, thriving under pressure and sacrificing for the greater good. After that meeting session, the team was instructed to board team buses where they were then taken to the water to perform Navy SEALS workout sessions, as seen below.
