Ohio State's Urban Meyer Tells Recruit He Likes His Butt (and he did not lie)

Recruiting high school players has to be tough on college coaches. As if sifting through the millions of high school athletes to find the diamonds wasn't challenging enough, but competing with every other program for a teenage kid's attention has to be tough.

So when you meet with a recruit like Raekwon McMillan, the top linebacker in the country, you have to pull out all the stops--like Urban Meyer did.

Essentially what Urban Meyer told him was he liked his butt. Now before you let creepy thoughts into your head the way he said it makes complete sense in a football player sort of way.

McMillan has been keeping a diary of his recruiting adventures for 247Sports. Since there are about 20 or so schools competing for his attention I'm sure he's got plenty of material. Here's a excerpt where he talks about what Meyer said about his behind:

“He calls me ‘Bubble.’ That’s because he said I have a linebacker butt,” writes McMillan. “I have a wide butt with a gre

Dante Booker Commits to the Buckeyes

Earlier today, the Buckeyes added the ninth member of their 2014 recruiting class, and third linebacker, Dante Booker.
Booker was a huge signing for the Buckeyes, as he is rated as the second best player in their recruiting class by Rivals.com, behind fellow linebacker Kyle Berger out of St. Ignatius.
Booker comes to the Buckeyes from St. Vincent St. Mary High School in Akron, Ohio. The school is most well known as the alma-mater of basketball superstar LeBron James.
Receiving offers from some of the best football programs in the midwest including Michigan, Notre Dame, Nebraska, and Penn State, Booker was a very highly sought after recruit.
Rivals.com lists Booker as the 10th ranked linebacker in the class of 2014, and the 108th ranked player in the nation. 247 has Booker as the 84th best player in the class of 2014, the 4th best outside linebacker in the class of 2014, and the number two player in the state of Ohio. ESPN has him as the 8th best linebacker and the third best player ...

Ohio State Player Profile – Adam Griffin

Griffin will be in the mix in the 2013 secondary.
Let me start out by simply stating the obvious: Adam Griffin is the son of the greatest living Ohio State football player, Archie Griffin. That being said, Adam is an excellent athlete in his own right. You have to be a great athlete to get a scholarship to play in Columbus Ohio.
Adam is a 5’8, 183 cornerback who played his high school football Columbus DeSales High School.
Adam didn’t come off the bench either, he was a starting running back, defensive back and return specialist. He started for the basketball team and also managed to make the academic honor roll, the consummate student-athlete.

Adam Griffin got to Ohio State in the fall of 2010 and he was a red-shirt in the last good year of the Jim Tressel administration.
In 2011 Griffin saw time as a special teams reserve, but not much more than that.
After the 2012 spring game, Griffin was listed as a back up cornerback. This was the role he filled during the Undefeated Season o...

Four-Star LB Dante Booker Jr. Commits To “THE Ohio State University”

There’s some good news for Buckeyes fans today, as Ohio State is getting a big linebacker recruit in the Class of 2014. Ohio State has been all over Dante Booker Jr., who is Ohio home-grown talent from Akron. Today he announced on Twitter that he’d be heading to Columbus for college:

Officially commited to THE Ohio State University #BuckeyeNation
— Dante Booker Jr. (@D_Book47) May 23, 2013

This is a big-time get, and one that the Buckeyes had to expect to end up in the scarlet and grey. Mission accomplished, Urban.

Mark May Trolls Ohio State Again, Buckeyes Fans Let Him Have It On Twitter

Mark May, ESPN college football analyst and professional Ohio State troll, is back at it again hating on the Buckeyes. Today, May let his Twitter followers know why he didn’t put OSU in his preseason top 10.
He posted the below on Facebook, which auto-feeds into his Twitter account. (It’s surprising that he actually figured out how to do that.)

Here we have two completely different statements, one of which is moronic, the other of which could be true. To say that Ohio State “should’ve lost 4 games” last season doesn’t make any sense, because it didn’t. His point about the Buckeyes playing in the SEC and losing four games is fine, though with May’s history, it’s not surprising to see his stance.
Ohio State fans aren’t taking kindly to May’s latest attack. To say they’ve gone after him on Twitter would be putting it lightly…

@mark_may dude honestly nobody cares about your opinion and nobody finds you credible. I don’t know how you have a job at ESPN

Ohio State Player Profile – Armani Reeves

A 4 Star recruit out of Catholic Memorial (West Roxbury, MA), Sophomore Cornerback Armani Reeves was a late 2012 commitment to the Buckeyes after decommitting from Penn State following the Sandusky scandal. Reeves joined best friend and high school teammate Camren Williams as commits from what is not normally an Ohio State pipeline out of Massachusetts. The scandal, as well as Urban Meyer’s recruit flipping skills turned Reeves to Columbus, but the idea of joining his friend could not have hurt things.

Reeves saw limited playing time in 2012, but that was to be expected with Travis Howard and Bradley Roby roaming the defensive secondary. He did manage to record 2 tackles to go along with his 45 kickoff return yards on two catches. Reeves will look to break through the logjam of elite corners vying to unseat Doran Grant on the field opposite All-Everything Roby. It is there that he might face the stiffest competition of his playing career to date.
One of the first things that Head C...

One of the Many Reason the Michigan/Ohio State Rivalry is Awesome

If you like college football--not just your team, but the game as a whole--then you are more than familiar with one of the most historic and one of the longest rivalries in college football between the Michigan Wolverines and Ohio State Buckeyes.

Like most rivals, they don't like each other. Again like most rivals, they don't hold back in making sure the other knows how they feel. Michigan succeeded in doing just that with this football.

Simple yet to the point. Love it.

Ohio State Coach Profile: Kerry Coombs

The true measure of a position coach doesn’t come in his first season on the job. A first-year coach spends his time teaching a new system to new players that he didn’t recruit. What takes place in that first season will likely end up being entirely different than what a unit will look like in that coach’s second or third season. Still, in his first year on the job Ohio State Cornerbacks Coach Kerry Coombs (who this offseason added the title of Special Teams Coordinator), was an undeniable force on the Ohio State coaching staff.

Coombs inherited a veteran secondary highlighted by Senior cornerback Travis Howard and redshirt Sophomore Bradley Roby. The unit was shaky at the start of the season, giving up too many big plays. However, as the season wore on, the secondary got better. By the end of the season Roby and Howard earned first-team all-conference honors. Roby averaged 1.73 passes defensed per game and Howard led the Big Ten and interceptions.
In addition to coaching an excell...

Ohio State Player Profile – Doran Grant

Junior cornerback, Doran Grant.
Expectations will be high this fall in Columbus, Ohio, as Urban Meyer and the Ohio State Buckeyes figure to be ranked inside the preseason top three and favored in every game they play. The Buckeyes have become the trendy pick to play in Pasadena for a national championship on January 6, 2013. With ten starters returning, their offense should have no trouble doing their part. The defense, on the other hand, will have some holes to fill, starting with the departure of cornerback Travis Howard. Doran Grant is the favorite to earn the starting nod alongside All-American, Bradley Roby, as the second cornerback.
Doran Grant hails from Akron, Ohio and attended high school at St. Vincent-St. Mary. Grant enjoyed an illustrious career with the Fighting Irish and was named a two-time all-state honoree as well as a USA Today All-American while playing offense, defense, and special teams.
The Curious Case of Buckeye Corners

The Buckeye Empire Summer Series continues with a look back at the 2012 season and the cornerback position, Bradley Roby and Travis Howard in particular.
In 2012, the Ohio State defense struggled mightily at times on the defensive end and many of those struggles centered around the defensive backfield. At a school sometimes referred to as DBU or CBU-Defensive Back University or Corner Back University, respectively-having problems in the secondary was especially alarming for Buckeye Nation.
Last season, the Silver Bullets ranked 11th out of 12 in the B1G in terms of passing defense, while allowing 2,922 yards through the air on the season.
Seeing these eye-poppingly bad numbers from the secondary came to become an enigma.
Bradley Roby had a stellar year for the Buckeyes, garnering All Big Ten and All-American honors. Travis Howard earned All Big Ten honors of his own. Doran Grant filled in admirably for Howard when he wasn’t 100%. Adam Griffin helped out along the way as well.

Hoax Alert: Some Guy Named Giovanni Strassini Has Been Posing As An Ohio State Football Alum For Years

Charlotte Buckeyes
If you weren’t a big-time college athlete, chances are that you probably wish you were. But one guy have may have gone a bit too far in attempting to make that dream a reality.
Someone named Giovanni Strassini has been posing as a former Ohio State football player in the Charlotte Buckeyes fan club, claiming he played tight end for the school from 1973-1977, was an All-American in 1976, caught an 8-yard touchdown pass in the 1976 Rose Bowl, was drafted in the 1977 NFL Draft, and even played baseball for the school.

A simple Google search of his name leads you to many web pages that you think would back up his claim, until you realize that many of them were doctored by someone with the same IP address from Charlotte, North Carolina. For example, the “1976 College Football All-American Team” pops up, but once on the page, his name is nowhere to be found. There’s also an IMDB page set up for him that just says he played “himself” in a movie about the 1976 Rose Bowl....

Last undergoing the knife in February 2012, the 25-year-old Oden played a mere 82 games as a member of the Portland Trail Blazers over the course of five injury-plagued seasons. “Man, he looks unbelievable,” said Thomas, 21, a 2013 first-team All-Big Ten selection. “He’s running, he’s lifting weights. You might be seeing a comeback. He looks like he is ready to go. He’s running, getting in shape. I’ll tell you one … Continue reading →

Prospect wouldn't give Spurs his phone number

Deshaun Thomas is in the same boat as many other prospects right now. With the NBA Draft looming a little over a month away, the former Ohio State Buckeye is doing everything he can to convince teams to select him. But one thing he isn't doing is giving away his cell phone number freely.According to Ohio.com, Thomas was pretty stingy when asked by the San Antonio Spurs for his digits. In fact, he wasn't willing to give his number out at all. Here's the scoop:Thomas said teams asked him plenty of difficult and interesting questions during his interview process at the combine. But the most interesting, he said, was the fact the Spurs’ first question was for his cell phone number and his e-mail address. He gave them the e-mail, but not the phone number.“I can’t go around giving it out to everyone,” Thomas said Thursday with a laugh. “Now if they want to draft me, I’d be happy to give it to them.”I'm no expert, but I've got to believe this move by Thomas probably did...

Buckeyes a tennis powerhouse in a Northern climate

Those who follow college men's tennis closely know that Ohio State has a powerhouse program.

Almost no one else does, however - even on the Buckeyes' own campus.

''The college tennis public knows we're a good, solid squad,'' said hard-nosed coach Ty Tucker, a former player for the Buckeyes. ''But I think to be considered the real deal, you've got to have the big trophy.''

The Buckeyes (33-2), seeded No. 5 as the NCAA tournament reaches this weekend's round-of-16 matches at Illinois, have room in their trophy case. They've been knocking on the door of national prominence for years. They just need a breakthrough win for their first title.

As is the case with most non-revenue sports on a sprawling campus, most of the players' fellow students are unaware of the success of the program. That's particularly true at Ohio State, where people plan weddings and funerals around the start times of football games but are oblivious to just about every other

Ohio State Basketball Offers High School Freshman V.J. King

Since it’s the offseason, the Ohio State basketball coaching staff is working hard on the recruiting trail. Today, the Buckeyes offered (unofficially) a kid who is not only drawing comparisons to LeBron James, but also attends his alma mater: St. Vincent – St. Mary’s in Akron, Ohio. The player is freshman phenom V.J. King.

King is already listed at 6-foot-6 and played small forward this past season. He’s also already being listed as a top ten recruit for the class of 2016. Although he is only a freshman and things can certainly change, this looks like it would be a huge get for Ohio State and its basketball team.
Here are some video highlights of King tearing it up in his freshman year.

Buckeyes Land ’14 WR Lonnie Johnson

This afternoon, standout wide receiver from Gary, Indiana, Lonnie Johnson, gave Ohio State a solid verbal commitment to join their 2014 class.
The 8th Buckeye committed for 2014, Johnson was ranked a four star recruit by 247Sports and ESPN, while given a three star rating from Rivals and Scout. He was ranked as the number three player in the state of Indiana and the 36th best WR in the ’14 class.
Johnson stands at 6’3, 180 pounds, and while he doesn’t have an official 40-yard dash time to date, Johnson is a speedster. He gives Ohio State something they haven’t seen in quite a while: speed with length on the outside. Since the days of Teddy Ginn Jr., Ohio State has lacked a truly fast wideout with the ability to get down the field. Johnson definitely has deep-threat ability and can certainly offer the Buckeyes a great pair of hands.
Out of West Side High School in Gary, Indiana, Johnson has played running back and safety in high school, but is definitely suited for the wideout positi...

Ohio State won't beat an SEC team for the next National Championship

Despite the fact that the SEC has won seven straight college football championships, it's becoming trendy to pick other teams to win the next national championship, even if it means a twist in logic.

For example, some people seem to think that Ohio State's relatively weak schedule (compared to SEC teams) gives them the advantage and makes them the favorite to win the title. According to Dennis Dodd:

"The Buckeyes are favored for now mostly because of what they don't have to do. They don't have to play an SEC schedule -- unlike Texas A&M, Alabama, LSU, Georgia, Florida and South Carolina. That makes a second consecutive undefeated season more likely. The Bucks believed they deserved a spot against Alabama a few months ago."

What about the fact that they'll almost certainly have to play an SEC team in the championship game?

By virtue of the conference winning the past seven championships, it's almost a lock that there will be an SEC...
