Penn State Football: Lions' Marcus Allen adds needed depth at safety

Penn State has been quickly moving up the ranks for the recruiting class of 2014, recently moving past Auburn and Alabama for the No. 14 overall spot (247Sports).

This is largely due to the Nittany Lions’ latest addition of Marcus Allen, who gave his verbal commitment to coach Bill O’Brien last Friday morning.

“He basically told me he was tired of the whole recruiting process,” said DaLawn Parrish, Allen’s high school coach. “He had looked around and narrowed it down. He knew what he wanted in a program. He thought he found that at Penn State.”

Allen, a four-star prospect at the safety position and No. 5 recruit from the state of Maryland, had racked up over 30 football scholarships before making his decision. This included offers from Michigan State, Wisconsin, Clemson and Stanford, among others.

“It’s hard to find a 6-foot-2, 190-pound kid that can run and hit,” Parrish said. “He still has room to grow, and he can play multiple positions. When you find someone like tha...

Bill O'Brien calls Sports Illustrated report a "character assassination" of Penn State AD

Penn State head coach Bill O'Brien was not shy or timid about his response to a recent Sports Illustrated report. Photo: USA Today Sports

Bill O'Brien was focused on the future when the NCAA handed down harsh sanctions against his new football program last summer. He was short and upset after he suffered his first coaching loss in Penn State's season opener. On Wednesday he was livid and noticeably annoyed as a result of a Sports Illustrated story he referred to as a character assassination against his boss, Penn State Athletics Director David Joyner.

On Tuesday Sports Illustrated teased an investigative story asking the question "Do athletics still have too much power at Penn State?" The report authored by senior writer David Epstein digs in to Penn State's handling of medical care available to football players by suggesting changes in the school's medical staffing were perplexing to many others tied to the Penn State football family and that...

Ex-Penn State QB Matt McGloin Signs With Raiders

Former Penn State quarterback Matt McGloin signed a three-year contract with the Oakland Raiders Wednesday. McGloin’s agent, Mark F. Magazu II, broke the news via Twitter.

McGloin went undrafted in last month’s NFL Draft and is walking on to an NFL team, much like he did to the Penn State football program.

During his senior season, McGloin threw for 3,271 yards, 24 touchdowns and led the Nittany Lions to an 8-4 record in Bill O’Brien’s first season as head coach.

Penn State losing Marshall early

Penn State guard Jermaine Marshall, the team's second-leading scorer, is foregoing his senior year of eligibility to pursue a professional career.

The team announced the surprise move in a statement Wednesday. Marshall is on schedule to graduate this summer.

Coach Patrick Chambers said Marshall cited turning pro as in the best interests of the player's son and family. Marshall said it was a difficult decision, and thanked the basketball program.

Marshall had steadily improved in his three years on the court. He averaged 15.3 points last season and took on more leadership and ball-handling responsibilities after point guard Tim Frazier went down in November with a left Achilles injury.

Frazier is expected back next year to join leading scorer D.J. Newbill (16.3 points) in the backcourt.

Penn State hoops' hopes take hit with Marshall announcement

Penn State basketball was supposed to have a chance in 2013-14, a chance to be a challenger for an upper division finish in the Big Ten. Well, that assumption took a massive hit on Wednesday as star guard Jermaine Marshall announced he is forgoing his senior season and instead will take his talents into the professional ranks.

It just won't be the NBA, as he missed the deadline to declare early for the NBA Draft in June.

The Nittany Lions' will lose their 2nd leading scorer from last season (13.5ppg average) from what could've been the best trio of guards in the Big Ten. Life will go on and PSU will now look to the duo of Tim Frazier (returning from injury that cost all but 4 games) and D.J. Newbill (16.3ppg) to take this program to new heights.

So, why make the decision Marshall did? According to the statement released Marshall sited making the best decision for his son and family as to why he is turning pro.

“I would like to thank my teammates, coaches and basketbal

Sports Illustrated takes aim at Penn State, misses badly

It's no wonder why some people think the likes of ESPN or Sports Illustrated have an agenda when it comes to certain stories. Whether it's taking down Syracuse (ESPN) or Penn State (both) there has been a perceived bias. Well, yesterday SI hinted a blockbuster, scathing report that would break things wide open in State College, PA.

Too bad when the actual article came out on Wednesday morning all it actually did was confirm everyone's suspicions that SI has it out for Penn State. Harsh words, we know, but it's also the honest truth.

SI decided to run a hit piece on AD Dave Joyner and football head coach Bill O'Brien, but did so by forgetting to do something most should be learning in Journalism 101 across America - sticking to the facts.

Instead, the article's author, David Epstein, decided to omit THE TRUTH from the story nearly entirely and relied on conjecture and anonymous sourcing to try and piece together some grand conspiracy that Joyner, O'Brien,

Letter to Bob Ley: Did JoePa fake his death?

In today’s ADD social media news feed climate, even the biggest stories of the year can come and go in a matter of days. That’s why in the wake of Jason Collins, Manti T’eo, ESPN’s Tim Tebow love affair, Titus Young’s wild week, etc. etc., it feels to me like the Jerry Sandusky/Penn State scandal happened a decade ago. But it wasn’t even one year ago that Sandusky was found guilty of 45 of 48 charges in his sexual abuse trial, and there are still three former Penn State administrators awaiting their trials, despite their best efforts to have their cases tossed.Naturally, the news still lingers in the hearts and minds of PSU alumni, students and football fans, so it makes sense that they would all still have many questions about how everything went down. And where there are questions, there are conspiracies like, say, Joe Paterno still being alive. At least that’s one man’s theory, according to a letter received by ESPN’s Bob Ley.I’m pretty disappointed that this wasn’t written with ...

O'Brien boosts support for Penn State

The contingent, appropriately dressed in blue and white, gathered in front of the blue and white bus with the unmistakable logo of the Penn State mascot.

But one man was missing, with nearly 10 minutes to go Tuesday, before the 9:30 a.m. departure time.

''Who are we waiting for,'' Penn State field hockey coach Char Morett asked an athletic department official. ''The big guy?''

Five minutes later, Bill O'Brien appeared with a stuffed black briefcase in one hand, a jacket in the other.

It was time to start another week of the Penn State coaches caravan.

Crisscrossing Pennsylvania and neighboring states to hit Penn State alumni strongholds, the caravan was a thank-you trip to fans, as well as an opportunity to do some face-to-face fundraising, and promote ticket sales.

Some of Penn State's true blue supporters showed, from current students to well-to-do alumni. After a successful first season on the sideline in the face of unprecedented pressures, O'Brien clearly

Bill O'Brien's Promise to Joe Paterno Before Taking Over for the Former Penn State Coach

Joe Paterno's legacy will forever be tarnished by the Jerry Sandusky scandal. No number of wins, pro bowlers, national titles/conference titles, or anything else for that matter will allow people to forget that he could have stopped a terrible tragedy from occurring.

JoePa had to know this. It would have been understandable if he just wanted to crawl into a dark corner and hide from the prying eyes of the media. No one likes getting fired, but to have it happen after being somewhere for 40+ years along with the knowledge that he could have/should have stopped a pedophile--the strain would break a lot of people.

Yet in spite of how his career ended and in spite of his ongoing battler with cancer the Coach had something on his mind that he had to talk to the new guy about.

He had to make sure that Bill O'Brien do one thing with the program, and it is something that O'Brien has shared:

“I know obviously that was a hugely difficult time for him. But he picked up the phone, and we t

O'Brien not expecting more transfers

Penn State has 67 scholarship players on its football roster and coach Bill O'Brien sees no reason why that will change significantly by the time the season starts Aug. 31.

O'Brien said Wednesday he doesn't expect a second wave of departures from the Nittany Lions, even though NCAA sanctions still allow his players to transfer without sitting out a season.

Ten players transferred out of Penn State after the NCAA handed down severe sanctions last summer in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal. O'Brien was forced to prepare for his first preseason practice with uncertainty over who would show up for training camp.

Players can still leave without penalty until the 2013 season starts, but O'Brien said he has not spent any time this offseason re-recruiting his guys.

''I don't see the mass exodus coming,'' O'Brien said before speaking to a banquet hall full of Penn State supporters in midtown Manhattan. ''We're going to coach who shows up July

Trustees OK changes, not incumbents

Penn State trustees have approved reforms to university governance following the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal and learned two incumbents on the university's governing board were voted out by alumni.

The changes approved by the board include removing the state's governor and the university president as voting trustees.

A board member and a board vice chair lost their seats Friday after facing vocal opposition from critics angered by the board's actions since the scandal broke in late 2011. Winning election were candidates endorsed by an alumni group critical of university leadership.

Many alumni are upset about the firing of football coach Joe Paterno days after former assistant coach Sandusky was arrested.

Sandusky was convicted of abusing several boys and is in prison but maintains his innocence.
