Forward Jon Graham latest to leave Penn State

Forward Jon Graham plans to transfer from Penn State, the latest departure from a roster getting a dramatic makeover.

Coach Patrick Chambers said Tuesday the 6-foot-8 Graham decided to leave following several discussions about his future. He was granted a release to transfer.

Graham played 31 games last year, averaging 1.9 points and 2.7 rebounds. He lost his starting job eight games into his sophomore season.

He's the fourth underclassman to leave following last year's 10-21 season. The most notable departure is guard Jermaine Marshall (15.3 points), who has told reporters he was foregoing his senior season for a professional career overseas.

Penn State has four incoming freshmen and Pitt transfer John Johnson eligible this year, plus the expected return of point guard Tim Frazier from a left Achilles injury.

Wednesday Cup of Joe: Allen Robinson still the Big Ten's best receiver?

Penn State wide receiver Allen Robinson led the Big Ten in receiving last season as the conference's only wide receiver to eclipse 1,000 receiving yards (only one to break 806 yards as well). Robinson was also the conference's leader in receiving touchdowns with 11, five more than Indiana's Cody Latimer, who was second in the conference with six touchdown receptions. Robinson's breakout year came at the right time, helping to fill any void left by the Oklahoma-bound Justin Brown, who took advantage of a free NCAA transfer as part of the sanctions against Penn State. Robinson's efforts were rewarded and acknowledged by the Big Ten with a receiver of the year award at the end of the season and he figures to be one of the top receivers again this season in spite of a fairly unproven, if not uncertain, quarterback situation.

So when ESPN.com's Big Ten blogging duo presented the question in a post yesterday, it was not much of a surprise to see Robinson get th...

Another Player Transferring From Penn State Men’s Basketball

The Penn State men’s basketball team entered the offseason with questionable front-court depth, and it appears they will enter the 2013-2014 season with even weaker front-court depth. Jon Graham, who will be a redshirt junior this upcoming season, has been granted his release from Penn State. In his sophomore season, he only averaged 1.9 points…

Penn State’s Recruits Twitter Handle Fires Back At UCLA’s Claim Of “Linebacker U”

We might have a Twitter fight on our hands between Penn State and UCLA. Late last night, the Bruins got a little ahead of themselves, posting a photo that claimed UCLA was “Linebacker U”. Heard that term before? Yeah, that’s because it unofficially belongs to Penn State, which is notorious for pumping out NFL linebackers.
And so, the school’s recruits Twitter handle has responded:

WE ARE…LINEBACKER U! pic.twitter.com/hLVQ563oAv
— Penn State Recruits (@PSURecruits) June 18, 2013

Sorry UCLA, but we’re going to have to side with the Nittany Lions on this one. You can’t just jack another school’s title with a claim on Twitter.

The Penn State Nittany Lions football program has long been known as “Linebacker U.” However, it appears that title may be up for grabs, at least according to UCLA.
Yesterday, the Bruins’ football Twitter account posted an image claiming Penn State’s famous title:

If there is one thing that can be said about Bill O'Brien's recruiting skills, it is that he can attract solid quarterbacks. With Christian Hackenberg highlighting the Penn State Class of 2013 and JUCO-transfer Tyler Ferguson also joining the program, it may have been a slight surprise to see the Nittany Lions already line up a four-star quarterback for the Class of 2014 this weekend.
Realistic Road to Reducing PSU Sanctions

An Associated Press article this week gave Penn State football fans hope, as school trustees publicly expressed their desire for leniency from the NCAA in reducing the Nittany Lions’ crippling sanctions.

The frequent, glowing reports from former Senator George Mitchell (the NCAA-appointed overseer for Penn State’s compliance) also lend credence to the view that the NCAA may be satisfied enough with Penn State to reduce the penalties.

Some PSU fans argue that any talk of clemency from the stubborn NCAA is a pipe dream. Others would be satisfied with nothing less than an immediate kowtowing from the collegiate sports authority, complete with a sign around the neck of a tarred-and-feathered Mark Emmert reading “I am devil.” Opinions are all over the board.

However, if a few members of the board of trustees are willing to bring it up, I think it’s worth our time to talk about what a reasonable approach to the sanction reductions might look like.

Judge tosses lawsuit against NCAA

A federal judge on Thursday threw out the governor's lawsuit against the NCAA over sanctions against Penn State related to Jerry Sandusky, calling his argument ''a Hail Mary pass'' that easily warranted dismissal.

U.S. Middle District Judge Yvette Kane's decision puts an early end to the anti-trust lawsuit Gov. Tom Corbett filed in January in which he sought to overturn a $60 million fine, a four-year bowl ban, scholarship limits and other penalties.

She said she could not ''find any factual allegations supporting (Corbett's) allegation of 'concerted action' that might nudge its conspiracy claim into 'plausible' territory.''

She said that even if the penalties make it harder for Penn State to recruit quality football players, that would not make it an anti-trust case.

''The fact that Penn State will offer fewer scholarships over a period of four years does not plausibly support its allegation that the reduction of scholarships at Penn Sta

Penn State Athletic Director: Bill O’Brien Will Stay “Years And Years”

Penn State head coach Bill O’Brien walked into a seemingly impossible situation last season after being hired as the New Nittany Lions head coach amid some earth shattering circumstances.
O’Brien spent five successful seasons as a New England Patriots offensive assistant coach, and turned that impossible situation into and 8 win season, and a big money contract extension.
Amid speculation that O’Brien could bolt for the NFL at any time now, Penn State Athletic Director David Joyner says O’Brien will remain at Penn State for a long time, according to the Associated Press.
“First, of all I think we’re going to have this guy for a long time. I truly, truly believe that,” he said. “But whenever the day comes that Bill may choose to leave — if it’s five years from now, if it’s 10 years; he may never choose to leave, this may be his last job, I certainly hope so — then we’ll adapt and deal with it.”
The good news for Penn State is that O’Brien seems like a pretty upstanding and class

Penn St. AD expects O'Brien to stay

Penn State Athletic Director David Joyner expects Bill O'Brien to be the Nittany Lions' football coach for a long time - even if O'Brien keeps attracting interest from the NFL.

In an interview Wednesday with The Associated Press, Joyner said he and O'Brien speak several times a week and when they do, ''I can tell you we talk in terms of years and years. We make plans for years and years.''

O'Brien led the Nittany Lions to eight victories last season, his first with the school. Penn State was in the first season of a four-year postseason ban, part of severe NCAA sanctions related to the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.

O'Brien, a former NFL assistant, was courted by pro teams after the season, but chose to stay put. Joyner, a former Penn State wrestler and football player who took over as athletic director in the midst of the Sandusky crisis, said he doesn't stress over the possibility that O'Brien will continue to get NFL suitors.

Penn State, Rutgers will kick off 2015 Big Ten schedule

Just as they will do in 2014, Penn State and Rutgers will play in the first official Big Ten game of the 2015 season. The Big Ten released the 2015 conference schedule this morning, confirming the date for Penn State and Rutgers to open the 2015 season once again being used as the conference opener. The two Big Ten East rival will play in Beaver Stadium on September 19, the date previously agreed to by the schools as part of a non-conference arrangement.

Allowing Penn State and Rutgers to keep that game as scheduled allows for Penn State to continue exploring scheduling options to fill a bye week in October or November, a problem that needs to be addressed for the 2014 season as well. Penn State opens the 2015 season in Philadelphia against Temple and plays the following two games in Beaver Stadium against Buffalo and Rutgers. As it stands at the moment, Penn State has the next two weeks of the schedule that are vacant. Penn State also has a bye week inserted in mid-November bef...

Here is Penn State’s Beaver Stadium (Beaver Field) from the old horseshoe days

Penn State’s football home, Beaver Stadium, is one of the largest stadiums in the country with a capacity over 100,000. If you looked at it today it might be difficult to imagine what it looked like decades ago, in the early years of the Joe Paterno era. Beaver Stadium used to be called Beaver Field, and the stadium was once actually disassembled and rebuilt in its current location today.
In fact, here is what old 30,000-seat horseshoe Beaver Field use to look like in the previous location, located more in the thick of the campus as opposed to the outside of the campus as it stands today. Today a parking garage can be found on the site seen below. The exact year of this photo is not known to me. If you happen to know the origin or date of this photo, please share it in the comment field.

Photos: Penn State Has Some New Football Uniforms For 2013-2014

Penn State’s football program is continuing its rebranding efforts with a few more changes to the Nittany Lions’ uniforms.
According to Nike Blog, the Penn State logo will be moved to the collar and the Nike swoosh symbol will be moved from the shoulder to near the center of the jersey. The two alterations help to create a pretty clean look for the Nittany Lions this season.
You can see both the home and away versions below:
