Aaron Harrison named Mr. Basketball in Texas

Future Kentucky Wildcat shooting guard Aaron Harrison has won Mr. Basketball in the state of Texas. Harrison beat out future teammates Julius Randle, and his brother Andrew for the honor. Aaron Harrison averaged 23.1 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.5 assists and two steals per game for Travis High School in Richmond, Texas. The Travis Tigers, lead by the Harrison’s, won the state championship this past season.
Aaron and Andrew Harrison may become one of the best twin duos to play in college basketball. Both players are listed as guards and stand 6’5”. Besides Kentucky Mr. Basketball Dominique Hawkins who stands at 6’1”, the Harrison’s are the most vertically challenged of the incoming freshman class. Kentucky will more than likely be the tallest team in the country next year unless the NCAA allows the Space Jam aliens to play. These guys have a grit about them. They already have that refuse to lose attitude that John Calipari loves. Coach Cal hasn’t had a team that hates to lose as much as the incoming

It’s another year of ranking recruiting classes at the end of the regular signing period on Hoopniks.com, but there’s been no change at the top of the list in years, as the Kentucky Wildcats have yet another No. 1 ranked class.
Goodwin struggles at NBA Combine

Former Kentucky guard Archie Goodwin was one of those players I thought needed another year in college. Goodwin is physically not ready for the pro game, and he’s more than likely going to be in the D-League. I always had a feeling his mind was in the NBA while he was still serving his 1-year in Lexington. Goodwin never seemed to develop or improve that much under the coaching of John Calipari. NBA Draft executives have made note, and that is a major concern for someone looking to draft him. Goodwin was always trying to drive to the basket and overpower anyone and anything in his way. He may have had success doing that in high school, but that mentality hurt him in college. If he tries that in the NBA? He’ll get hurt.
During today’s NBA Draft combine, Goodwin was participating in workouts in front of NBA personnel to showcase his skills. Most of the NBA Draft participants who are expected to be picked in the high first round sat out of today’s workouts. Some of the participants that sat out may have a

Calipari confident heralded recruits will mesh

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The pending arrival of eight heralded newcomers has allowed Kentucky coach John Calipari to quickly move on after losing out on top recruit Andrew Wiggins.

Calipari is confident his large recruiting class will mesh and have the Wildcats back in national championship contention.

Calipari acknowledges the challenge of melding the skills of another talented group of freshmen, one featuring six McDonald's All-Americans. Kentucky's latest recruiting class is considered the best in school history, ratcheting expectations of a ninth national championship next season.

Wiggins was considered the final piece for a Wildcats' title run, but the nation's top-rated player committed to Kansas Tuesday.

Still, Calipari's believes his class will be successful because junior Kyle Wiltjer and sophomores Willie Cauley-Stein and Alex Poythress return to provide experience and leadership for the rookies.

His only caveat: expecting too much from his 13-man roster, especially after Kentucky

Davis, MKG make NBA All Rookie Teams

The Kentucky Wildcats produced the top two picks in the 2012 NBA Draft. Anthony Davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist left the ‘Cats after winning the national championship and hanging banner #8. For high draft picks, the fear of being a “bust” is always looming around their careers. The higher the draft pick, the more the expectations. For Davis and MKG, that meant being the two players with the most to live up to as pros. Their successes at Kentucky have yet to be matched, but they are well on their way.
The NBA has announced their All-Rookie teams, and there is no surprise to anyone to see Davis and Kidd-Gilchrist being honored. Anthony Davis made the 1st team, and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist made the 2nd team. Davis averaged 13.5 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks a game, while MKG posted 9 points and 5.8 rebounds a game. Anthony Davis came in 2nd place for the NBA Rookie of the Year award, behind Portland’s Damien Lillard.

The Internet Apparently Doesn’t Want Andrew Wiggins To Choose Kentucky

With today being “Andrew Wiggins Day”, AKA the day that the No. 1 overall high school basketball recruit will make his collegiate decision, Twitter has been abuzz with predictions, analysis and straight-up hate. The majority of the disdain, of course, is focused on John Calipari and his Kentucky program. With five of the top nine prospects secured as Wildcats for the class of 2013, the addition of Wiggins would surely take Kentucky from an NIT participant to the favorite to win the NCAA Tournament.
Naturally, fans of almost every other program in the country are pulling for Wiggins to choose any of the three other schools – North Carolina, Kansas and Florida State. That’s right, fans are actually rooting for UNC and KU – two of the most storied programs in the history of college basketball – to land Wiggins and stop Calipari’s insane recruiting streak.
Don’t believe me? Check out Twitter this morning – it’s been a riot. Fans of #BBN are obviously pulling for Coach Cal, but pretty mu...

BREAKING: Drew Barker Officially Commits To Kentucky

College Spun
Drew Barker will be playing football for Mark Stoops and the Kentucky Wildcats starting in 2014. The star quarterback made his decision this afternoon at 3:30 p.m., ending what was an intense recruitment by both UK and South Carolina.
In typical fashion, the recruit chose from a set of three hats – the other two being Tennessee and SC – to signify which school he’ll be lacing up for one year from now. The announcement was broadcast on WKYT.
Barker announced his decision at his high school this afternoon in front of his coach, classmates and numerous media personnel. And while everyone in the building wanted to know which school Barker would choose, his coach actually avoided it as long as possible.

Conner coach Dave Trosper said Drew Barker sent him a text with his college choice but says he hasn’t looked at it yet. And won’t.

Kentucky To Use Depth To Play Faster

John Calipari's incredibly deep recruiting class will give Kentucky a physically stronger frontcourt than he has in past seasons.
"We're going to be much stronger physically at all positions,'' said Calipari. "Our post presence will be there with Dakari Johnson and Marcus Lee. He's a lot like Nerlens in terms of blocking shots and going after balls. He's bouncy with great energy, but he's not as big. Willie is coming back with one thought in mind: He wants to do something on the basketball court and in the tournament. He's got something to prove to himself. He's got a great frame of mind. He understands he's got to do it and do something different.''
Calipari will have more options with putting together lineups than he ever has before while at Kentucky.
"There will be a lot of teams ahead of us, but we'll be deeper and the bench will be a great friend of mine,'' said Calipari. "I'll be able to play l...

Nerlens Noel brings 7-year-old leukemia patient to Kentucky Derby with him

Former Kentucky star Nerlens Noel attended the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, and he brought with him a special guest. Noel has developed a relationship with a 7-year-old boy named Kelly Melton, who is currently battling leukemia. Melton was recently released from the hospital, so Noel asked him if he would like to accompany him to the biggest horse race of the year.
“I brought Kelly with me,” Noel explained, via the Courier-Journal. “He struggles with leukemia and I’ve known him for a while. He’s been in the hospital for a while. He just got out the other day so I invited him here to come experience this with me. It’s my first and it’s his first so it’s a great opportunity for us to come out here and enjoy it.”
Noel just turned 19 last month. Despite the fact that he suffered a knee injury in February and was held out for the remainder of the Wildcats’ season, he has decided to declare for the upcoming NBA Draft. The fact that he is already helping brighten the day of people like litt...

Kentucky Safety Ashely Lowery Is Responding Well In Hospital After Car Accident

On Friday night, Kentucky safety Ashely Lowery was hospitalized after he was in a serious car accident in Georgia. Lowery was ejected from his vehicle and landed 100 feet away from the initial crash.
Here’s a look at his vehicle (or what was left of it):

More information has been released today on his condition. This morning the doctors removed his breathing tube and he was able to recognize his family and friends. Lowery can also move his arms and legs.
One of the best signs was this: according to this tweet from teammate Martavius Neloms, Lowery’s first comment after waking up was a joke about his appearance.

Pitino & Calipari Pose For Picture Together In Lexington

Rick Pitnio and John Calipari eating dinner at the same restaurant in Lexington and posing for pictures together probably isn’t something you expected to see or hear about tonight, but it happened.

Matt Jones of KentuckySportsRadio.com shared this picture on Monday night. Apparently Pitino and Calipari’s mutual friend who recently passed away once worked at the restaurant in Lexington.

Calipari says no to Maui Invitational

On a recent recruiting trip, Missouri head coach Frank Haith overheard North Carolina head coach Roy Williams speaking with Kentucky’s head coach John Calipari. Williams mentioned he would be taking his North Carolina team to Maui in 2016. John Calipari says he’s not taking his team this year. The Maui Invitational is one of the premier holiday tournaments of the year, and who wouldn’t want to go to Hawaii?
Traveling across the five time zones and heading to Maui just isn’t worth it to Calipari. Kentucky hasn’t been to Maui since 2010, when they were blown out in the finals by Connecticut. The invitations are renewed every four years, and Kentucky’s trip is due. Without the ‘Cats, the invitational itself won’t succumb to any troubles. They have plenty of high profile college programs that want, and will come to Hawaii. Kentucky will already have plenty of high profile competition due to Calipari’s scheduling tactics. Honestly, nobody loses here.
Besides being in paradise, what can the Maui I
