Thursday Bulldog Hoover Notebook

ALL’S WELL THAT ENDS WELL: He accounted for three of Mississippi State’s five runs batted in, including the priceless insurance score in the decisive ninth inning. Yet Demarcus Henderson was as annoyed about the RBI he did not produce, on a non-hit attempt, than he was happy over an otherwise excellent offensive night.

The Breakdown: Jocquell Johnson

Jocquell Johnson has been on the Mississippi State recruiting radar since his sophomore year in high school. The former Callaway Charger has spent a lot of time on the Mississippi State campus over the course of the last few years. Beginning in January, Johnson will call Starkville home as he begins his Bulldog career.

Gentry, Bulldogs Grind Down Gamecocks 5-3

Presumably, Myles Gentry had the instructions to stretch his relief stint, preserve a short-handed bullpen, and keep Mississippi State even with South Carolina. Correct? “He said that, but not in those words,” Gentry related. Well then, what were the exact words by Coach Butch Thompson? “He just told me go out there and be out there as long as you can.” Gentry’s longest was long enough.

Gamecocks play Miss State ... Again

Carolina starts the SEC tournament tonight against Mississippi State. You may recall that the Gamecocks just played a three game set against the Bulldogs and lost two of three. Tonight's game will be on CSS or ESPN3 and will start 30 minutes after the Vandy - Texas A&M game concludes. The Dores and Aggies play at 5:30 eastern. USC will send their #1 pitcher, Nolan Belcher, to the mound.

This year's SEC tournament has a new format. On the first day 8 teams play 4 games. The losers are eliminated, and the winners join the top 4 seeds in the main bracket. The 8 teams that remain are divided into two (predetermined) sides of 4. Those 4 teams play a traditional double elimination tournament with one exception. Usually the winner of the losers' bracket must beat the winner of the winners' bracket twice. In this tournament the winners of the brackets play once and that winner moves to the final. Clear as mud?

What the Gamecocks have to Win

Dan Mullen Calls On Some Old Friends To Fill His Depth Chart Needs

The talented, always informative, and when-does-he-sleep Bill Connelly of SB Nation fired up his writing and stats machine to profile Mississippi State under Dan Mullen in his ongoing "10 Things To Know" series. The series, which is nicely sucking up the mass of free time until football starts, focuses on a team's level of play in the past few years and whether or not said team's fans should be hopeful or even bother getting out of bed next season.

His conclusion about Mullen and my thoughts on Mullen are pretty much the same. Mullen has made Mississippi State a competent football program and, barring a meltdown of meltdowns, will not allow State to slip back into the final days of the Jackie Sherrill and the Sylvester Croom eras.

But, Mullen has also sort of started to level off, which is not necessarily a bad thing. He's trimmed away most of the terribleness, and now has State sitting in a position that, with the right mix of talent, experience, fa...

Mississippi State Coach Dan Mullen Sends Mother’s Day Card As Recruitment Letter to Chase Johnson (Photo)

It’s tough to recruit in the SEC, so Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen is smart to pull out all the stops in his recruitment letters.
Mullen’s latest stunt was sending a Mother’s Day card to offensive line prospect Chase Johnson as a recruitment letter. In the past, Mullen has written “You’re a baller” to one prospect and drawn a “can of swag” for another in a recruitment letter.
The Mother’s Day-themed note worked on Johnson. Mullen wrote that “Family is priority #1 in my program” in the letter.
“I’ve always liked Mississippi State,” Johnson told the Clarion Ledger. “But I think it affected me. They believe family is No. 1. They are going to accept you and your family. They aren’t just recruiting you. They are recruiting your whole family.”
Check out Mullen’s Mother’s Day card in the photo below.

Mississippi State Coach Dan Mullen Sent A Heartfelt Mother’s Day Card To A Recruit’s Mom

Mississippi State head football coach Dan Mullen is attempting to take the most direct route to convincing big-time recruits to play for his Bulldogs – focusing on their moms. Mullen sent a Mother’s Day card to offensive lineman Chase Johnson’s mom earlier this week, which Johnson then posted on Twitter. Check it out:

S/o to Mississippi State and @coachdanmullen for showing my moms some love! Family is #1 #godawgs twitter.com/Grind0rDie77/s…
— Chase Johnson™ (@Grind0rDie77) May 10, 2013

Johnson told The Clarion-Ledger what it meant to him:

“I’ve always liked Mississippi State,” Johnson said. “But I think it affected me. They believe family is number one. They are going to accept you and your family. They aren’t just recuting you. they are recruiting your whole family.”

Bravo, Dan Mullen. This is certainly better than some of the other recruiting tactics we’ve seen recently.

Dan Mullen sends Mother’s Day card to recruit’s mom

The SEC coaches are starting to take things to the next level when it comes to recruiting. Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen sent a Mother’s Day card to a recruit’s mother on Thursday. The recruit is Chase Johnson and he is an offensive tackle from Mississippi that is currently unranked by 24/7 Sports. Mississippi State is the only SEC school that is recruiting Johnson and it should also be noted that Johnson doesn’t even hold a scholarship offer from them.
Mullen seems to be pulling out all of the stops, short of offering a scholarship, to get an early lead on Johnson before he becomes a hot commodity.

Time for another entry into the "bizzare things signed by sports figures" department. This one comes from an undisclosed stop on Mississippi State's annual Road Dawgs meet and greet tour, where the Bulldogs' head football coach Dan Mullen was asked to sign an expectant mother's ultrasound. This is going to be awkward in eighteen years when the kid signs his or her letter of intent to go to Ole Miss.

Talk about early recruiting.

Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen got a head start on the class of 2032 this morning after signing a fan’s ultrasound while on a coaches tour.

It’s unknown whether the kid has given its verbal commitment yet, or if he/she will keep its options open for the next 17 years.

Seriously, this is nuts. Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen signed an ultrasound this morning. I just…

Miss. St. coach Dan Mullen signs ultrasound

“Coach, can you sign my ultrasound?” This is one of those moments you’re probably never actually prepared for, although you should be. No, you NEED to be. Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen recently learned what a moment like this is like, and he was more than happy to oblige.
