ISU's Otzelberger leaving for Washington

After eight years in Ames, Iowa State assistant coach T.J. Otzelberger felt it was time for a new challenge.

Otzelberger is hoping his next move will be the last one before becoming a head coach.

Washington coach Lorenzo Romar announced Tuesday that he had hired Otzelberger as an assistant, calling him a ''tenacious recruiter.'' Otzelberger told The Associated Press that Romar convinced him a move to Seattle would help him earn a head coaching job someday.

Romar ''really said `I look at you as somebody that's on the brink of taking that next step,''' Otzelberger said.

Otzelberger's departure is the biggest blow that Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg's staff has suffered in his three seasons in Ames.

The 36-year-old Otzelberger had been with Iowa State since 2006, arriving with former head coach Greg McDermott. Otzelberger was promoted to associate head coach in 2010 under Hoiberg, who at the time cited Otzelberger's presence as critical in rebuilding the pr

Iowa St QB Richardson adapts to pistol attack

Iowa State quarterback Sam Richardson is nearly finished with his first spring as the Cyclones starter.

A new role and a new system haven't slowed down the sophomore.

Richardson earned high praise yet again Saturday from Iowa State offensive coordinator Courtney Messingham for his work in spring ball. Both Messingham and Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads said they're pleased with what they've seen so far out of Richardson, who took over the starting job at the end of last season and entered the spring atop a thin depth chart.

Richardson has apparently made strides in his game despite having to also learn the intricacies of the pistol offense, which Iowa State has started integrating into its playbook over the past few weeks.

''I'm very happy with his progress this spring. That's one thing - he's always been a very smart quarterback. From day one, we realized that he really understands schemes. Now, he's understanding them with the bullets flying,'' Messingham said.

Iowa State: NCAA case started with basketball aide

Iowa State says its discovery of NCAA recruiting violations started when men's basketball coach Fred Hoiberg ran into an assistant at an AAU basketball game in 2011.

The university released the 590-page report Wednesday that it sent to the NCAA last week. The university has asked for a punishment of two years' probation.

The report says Hoiberg asked assistant Keith Moore why he was present at the game in apparent violation of NCAA rules and whether he'd been contacting recruits. The report says Moore admitted he had, and the university fired him the next day and started an internal investigation. Moore couldn't immediately be reached.

The report says an audit of telephone and text messaging found ''a significant number of recruiting communication violations involving most of its sports programs.''

Rutter spent seven seasons at Iowa State, the last three as the director of basketball operations under Fred Hoiberg. Rutter and Giacoletti have known each other for 20 years, and Giacoletti says Rutter's roots will help further his goal to recruit players from the Midwest.

Rutter was the head coach at Wisconsin-Parkside from 1996-2003 before joining current Creighton coach Greg McDermott at Northern Iowa.

Giacoletti was hired by Drake last week to replace Mark Phelps.

A year after getting upset in the first round by Marist, Georgia is back in the round of 16 for the 20th time in school history. The Lady Bulldogs will face No. 1 seed Stanford or eighth-seeded Michigan in the regional semifinals across town at the Spokane Arena on Saturday night.

Anne Marie Armstrong added 13 points for the Lady Bulldogs, who blew a 14-point lead with 9 minutes remaining then scored 13 of the final 17 points after the fifth-seeded Cyclones took the lead.

Anna Prins led Iowa State with 23 points, but the Cyclones (24-9) couldn't overcome going more than 11 minutes of the second half with just one field goal.

Iowa State and Georgia set to meet in 2nd round

Through all of his success in 18 seasons at Iowa State, a loss in 1999 still sticks with Bill Fennelly.

That same game also sticks out to Georgia's Andy Landers for completely different reasons - it was the last time the Lady Bulldogs reached the Final Four.

The two long-tenured coaches will reacquaint themselves on Monday night when the fifth-seeded Cyclones (24-8) face the No. 4 seed Lady Bulldogs (26-6) in the second round of the NCAA women's tournament. The winner will advance to the regional semifinals across town at the Spokane Arena next Saturday night.

Iowa State knocked off Gonzaga, while Georgia pulled away from Montana for first-round victories on Saturday. The matchup between the Cyclones and Lady Bulldogs will be just the third meeting all-time between the two schools, all coming in the NCAA tournament.

Here’s What Iowa State’s Students Are Chanting During Free Throw Attempts

If you’ve been watching the Iowa State vs. Ohio State third round matchup in the NCAA Tournament this morning, you’ve no doubt heard the wide array of phrases the Cyclones’ band and students have been chanting at Ohio State’s players when they’re taking free throws.

USA Today ran an article after ISU’s matchup against Notre Dame on Friday on the topic. Here’s a list of what they were chanting:

“The hoop is smaller than the ball.”
“You’re shooting for a date to the prom.”
“You’re shooting a greasy bowling ball.”
“Your number’s a palindrome.”
“There is no hoop.”

Sounds about right, though there have definitely been a few different ones today as well.

Here’s the clever Iowa State band, who must have a list of chants to use during free throws. #marchmadness twitter.com/davidjabs7/sta…
