'09-'10 Cyclones Basketball Analysis #1: Background And Team Improvements Thus Far

It is obvious that this year's team is better than the previous years. What is interesting though are reasons that the media, "Cyclone Insiders", etc., are attributing to the results. Mostly, they are qualitative, which are OK, but I'm more of a hard stats type of a guy. I want to be able to measure changes, and use qualitative observations to explain the results, more-so than being the conclusions.
I wanted to take a look at some of the statistics to see how we can exp...

Frustrating game. Not a lot to say at this point. In the first half, the Cyclones played great, and the defense was able to keep them in the game. Darius Darks finally had a great game, catching 9 passes for 107 yards, and 1 TD.

3-Pointers: Cyclones making noise on offense

Sporting News' Mike DeCourcy analyzes what Thursday's buzz means to college basketball.
Rock you like a Cyclone
Iowa State is averaging 83.3 points per game, which seems a little like Taylor Swift covering a Black Sabbath tune.
The Cyclones topped 80 only once last season, but their increased potency has meant star forward Craig Brackins no longer carrying the entire burden of the offense.
"If I'm a distraction every game and I get double-teamed and that leaves somebody op...

Thoughts After Black Hills State

The Cyclones won 96-47, but the final score of these exhibitions really don't matter all that much, as it doesn't count against your record. To me what matters is how our guys look. You won't always know how good they will be, but you can certainly tell if they might struggle; if they're struggling against a D2 team, who's to think you won't struggle against D1, and better yet Big 12 talent?
Quick example: Clinton Mann last year. People thought he'd step in, g...

Football Depth Chart As of 8/31/2009

Not exactly sure what the story is with Smith, but having O'Connell start can only be a good thing. Either he has beat out an established starter and th...

This past Saturday, August 15th, the Cyclones had their first scrimmage of the season. From the reactions of the coaches, it sounded like the team has a lot of work to do.
Coach Rhoads did specifically mention that he was impressed with Beau Blankenship's efforts running the ball, along with Darius Reynolds' kick returning, and Grant Mahoney's kicking.
DC Wally Burnham sounded encouraged with the results. He mentioned that the defense is vulnerable in the redzone, but he was ple...
