Happy Birthday No. 16.

Former Arkansas State Red Wolves coach Steve Roberts' claim was true.

“I told some people, after his freshmen year, when he was finished, he would be the best quarterback in school history,” said Roberts, when asked about . “There was just something about him. He had ‘it’.”

A-State Football Names Tucker Wide Receivers Coach

Arkansas State Press Release
JONESBORO, Ark. — First-year Arkansas State head football coach Bryan Harsin completed his coaching staff Thursday with the announcement that Anthony Tucker has been named the Red Wolves’ wide receivers coach.
Tucker comes to Arkansas State after spending the last two seasons at Idaho State, where he coached outside wide receivers for a squad that ranked among the top 10 in the nation in passing yards in back-to-back years. Led by All-America wide receiver Rodrick Rumble, the Bengals averaged 351.6 passing yards per game last season to rank fourth nationally, while the 2011 team held the nation’s ninth-best average at 300.6 yards per game.
The Tucker-coached Rumble was named to multiple All-America teams during his career, which he finished as Idaho State’s all-time leader in receptions (223) and receiving yards (2,863). Under Tucker’s direction, Rumble finished among the top-10 players in the nation in receptions and receiving yards as both a junior and senior.

Courtesy: Mizzou Athletics

Columbia, Mo. The University of Missouri has wrapped up its search for a final opponent for its 2013 football schedule, as Mizzou and Arkansas State University have agreed to a home-and-home series, with games in 2013 and 2015. This seasons game will be played in Columbia on Sept. 28th, with the return game scheduled for Sept. 12, 2015 in Jonesboro, Ark. Kickoff times for all 2013 Mizzou Football games will not be set until SEC television selections are made this summer.

Arkansas State is coming off a 10-3 season which saw the Red Wolves claim the Sun Belt Conference Championship. Arkansas State concluded their 2012 season with a 17-13 win over 25th-ranked Kent State in the GoDaddy.com Bowl in January. Mizzou and Arkansas State have played twice previously, with the Tigers claiming wins in 2004 (52-20 in Columbia) and 2005 (44-17 in Kansas City).

Were very pleased to finish out our 2013 schedule with a quality opponent such as Arkansas State, said Executive Associate Director of

Go Daddy Dot Com Bowl Preview – Arkansas State vs. Kent State

We are reaching the end of the bowl season with only two left to play. I am always confused when we get to this time of year and some of the lesser conferences are stuck in the middle of the BCS games, but it is better than not having any college football games. This is a battle of interim coaches as Gus Malzahn (Arkansas St.) and Darrell Hazell (Kent St.) have moved on to bigger opportunities at Auburn and Purdue, respectively. Coaching changes at this time of year can create havoc and disappointment in players and fan bases, but that is certainly part of the post-season carousel in today’s college football. This game will tell us a lot about how the coaching transitions are being handled and how the two teams will be affected going into next year. Will Kent St. be able to hold onto their new found success under a new coaching regime or will they shrink back into mediocrity? We will get a glance of what their short-term future will be tonight.

Arkansas State Head Coaching Job Posted On Craigslist

The Arkansas State faithful are following in Tennessee’s footsteps and have posted their head coaching vacancy on Craigslist. As far as we know this post has not been flagged for removal yet so if anybody is interested in applying, here is the Craigslist listing.
The highlights:

We like scoring almost as much as Petrino does
Dress Code: ABSOLUTELY NO VISORS
Candidate should also come equipped with a catch phrase, Ex: “Feel the Freeze, Get on the Gus Bus.”
Compensation: Pretty low- That’s why everyone else has left us. Duh.

Looks like the Red Wolves faithful are starting to get weary about their upcoming showdown with #25 Kent State in the GoDaddy.com Bowl. After all, how do you replace this guy?

To view the full image of the listing, click here.
We’ll give it two weeks until Eagles, Chargers and Bills fans start posting ads like this thinking they’re being clever.

Bobby Petrino interested in Arkansas St. head football coaching job?

Arkansas State is having to look for a new head football coach now that Guz Malzahn bolted to Auburn after just one year in Jonesboro. Unlike snakebitte-n Tennessee, there is actually someone who actually is interested in coaching the Red Wolves. The bad news for Arkansas St.? It's Bobby Petrino. At least Luke Matheson says Petrino is .

Yes I said it, and no I'm not making it up. Bobby Petrino HAS contacted #ArkSt with interest in their job.
— Luke Matheson (@LukeMatheson) December 6, 2012

Of course if this story is true, the question is how Arkansas State gets out of the awkward dilemma of turning Petrino down while finding a replacement for Malzahn that can make supporters forget Petrino was interested in the job in the first place.

Arkansas State names interim coach for bowl game

Arkansas State says defensive coordinator John Thompson will serve as interim coach for the Red Wolves as they prepare to play No. 25 Kent State in the GoDaddy.com bowl next month.

Thompson takes over for Gus Malzahn, who's leaving Arkansas State for Auburn after one season. Malzahn led the Red Wolves to a 9-3 record and a Sun Belt Conference championship.

Athletic director Terry Mohajir says it's best for Arkansas State to have an interim coach for the bowl because Malzahn ''will understandably be consumed with his commitments to Auburn.''

Thompson is in his first year as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Arkansas State. He was previously an assistant coach at Georgia State and coach at East Carolina.

Arkansas State's defense ranked first in scoring defense in the Sun Belt this year.

Arkansas State releases cringeworthy promo

Brace yourself. This is how the folks in Jonesboro are gearing up for Saturday's huge Sun Belt Conference game. That game will pit the host Arkansas State Red Wolves (8-3, 6-1) up against the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders (8-3, 6-1) in a winner-take-all scenario for the conference championship. The fine people at Arkansas State decided to make a little a promotional video in honor of the affair. It was a noble effort, however, it may have actually suppressed enthusiasm for the weekend. I'm not sure who thought this would be a good idea, but I'm glad they did because it gave us one of the worst (or best) pump-up clips of all-time.Via Deadspin.

Arkansas State dismisses Michael Dyer from team-Worst of both worlds

It was announced this evening according to Arkansas State SID that former Auburn and much maligned running back Michael Dyer has been dismissed for violation of unspecified team rules.
What a mess for Dyer and what a ride he's been on. After being dismissed from Auburn, he transferred to Arkansas State and applied for a waiver that would have allowed him to play this year. His waiver request was denied.
Upon the denial football fans were taken on a roller coaster ride for several days as rumors flew about Dyer possibly transferring to DII powerhouse Pittsburg State University. I know I was told personally by staff at PSU that Dyer wanted to be there and was hoping to work out the scholarship concerns.
But 2 days later Ark. State head coach Gus Malzhan held a press conference announcing that Dyer was excited to be at Arkansas State, they were excited to have him, and he would redshirt this season and be ready to play in 2013.

The bond between Arkansas State quarterback Ryan Aplin and his younger sister Carlye

Entering the 2012 season, excitement is at an all-time high around the Arkansas State football program. Arkansas native Gus Malzahn has taken over as head coach. The team returns 12 starters off a team that won 10 games and a Sun Belt title last year. And most importantly, three-year starter Ryan Aplin returns at quarterback, where the reigning conference Player of the Year already owns 16 school records, and is projected by some as a late round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.
Yet despite the numbers that Ryan has put up on the field, it’s actually another Aplin- Ryan’s sister Carlye- who might be more popular on the Arkansas State campus. The15-year-old, who suffers from a rare disorder known as Smith Magenis Syndrome, is at most home games and has become the unofficial “Team Sister” of many Red Wolves players.

Cheerleaders Of The Sun Belt Conference: Arkansas State’s Mallorye

Via Spirit Editor, Asher:
Most people focus on the BCS schools when looking for hot college cheerleaders. It’s easy to turn to the University of Oregon cheerleaders when searching for the hottest cheerleaders in the college ranks. But I’m here to tell you that is a BIG MISTAKE. If you’re ignoring the smaller schools, then you are missing some phenomenal talent.
That said, we give you Mallorye. Refusing to take a look at the Arkansas State would prevent you from finding this tiny, flexible little thing with a killer body. The former gymnast has put her flipping ability to good use for the Red Wolves of ASU. Not to mention, she can wear the crap out of a Princess Leia costume!!!
So don’t sleep on the cheerleaders of the Sun Belt Conference because I guarantee you will miss good things.

Patterson joins Arkansas State staff

Pittsburgh interim coach Keith Patterson has been hired as the new defensive coordinator at Arkansas State.

Red Wolves coach Gus Malzahn announced Patterson's hiring on Wednesday.

Patterson was in his first season as Pittsburgh's defensive coordinator and linebackers coach before taking over as interim head coach on Dec. 14. He will lead the Panthers against Southern Methodist in the BBVA Compass Bowl on Saturday.

Before his time at Pittsburgh, Patterson coached linebackers and served as defensive coordinator at Tulsa. During that eight-year stretch, the Golden Hurricane went to six bowl games.

Majerus, Brady meet as rebuilding continues

ST. LOUIS Billikens coach Rick Majerus knows all too well about the challenges facing Arkansas State coach John Brady.

After all, Majerus finds himself in a similar situation.

Gone are the glory days of Final Four appearances for the two veteran coaches. The two now face the task of continuing rebuilding efforts at new schools.

But Brady is not ready to compare the two situations just yet.

"They have a nice following and tradition here with basketball," Brady said. "We don't have much of that where I am, so it's a little different. They're in the A-10, big city, brand new arena with suites. It's a little different, but we are both trying to rebuild programs."

Saint Louis used a season-high 18 points from Dwayne Evans and 12 points from Brian Conklin to beat Arkansas State, 70-46, Thursday night at the Chaifetz Arena.

But much of the story was centered around the matchup of two Final Four coaches.

Majerus coached 15 seasons at Utah and took the Utes to the NCAA Tourn

Arkansas State AD won't rush coaching search

Arkansas State athletic director Dean Lee says he won't rush the search for the coach to replace Hugh Freeze, who was hired by Mississippi on Monday after spending one season as coach of the Red Wolves.

''We're going to move quickly, but we're not going to get in a hurry,'' Lee said.

Arkansas State (10-2) won the Sun Belt Conference and will play Northern Illinois in the GoDaddy.com Bowl on Jan. 8. It's the first 10-win season for the school since 1986, when it was a member of the I-AA Southland Conference.

Running backs coach David Gunn has been named the Red Wolves' interim coach and will coach the team in the bowl game, and Lee has hired a Florida company to help find a new coach. Lee said several assistant coaches told him they would likely follow Freeze to Ole Miss but nothing was set.

Lee said he hasn't talked to any prospective applicants yet, but he expects to have an easy time selling Arkansas State following Freeze's quick success. The Red Wolves were
