Rakeem Buckles Expected To Follow Richard Pitino To Minnesota

I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t wish former Louisville forward Rakeem Buckles was on the floor with the team when they won the 2013 national championship just a month ago.
Buckles was a part of Louisville’s 2009 recruiting class and had things gone the way we had hoped, he would have been a senior on this year’s championship team.
Buckles’ collegiate career hit an unfortunate road block between 2011 – 2012 as he suffered two torn ACL’s in less than a calendar year.
He decided head back home to Miami, FL., and attend Florida International, where Richard Pitino had recently been hired. Buckles spent the 2012-13 season rehabbing and will finally be healthy and ready for his final year of college basketball in 2013-14.
Just as things started to get better for Buckles, he again found himself in an unfortunate situation. In early April, Richard Pitino left FIU after just one season to take the head coaching job at Minnesota. To make matters worse, FIU will likely not be able to compe...

FIU transfer Malik Harris follows Pitino to Minnesota

New Minnesota mens basketball head coach Richard Pitino left Florida International to become a Gopher, and it looks like he wont be the only one to do so.
Malik Smith, a junior guard from Boston, Mass., announced via Twitter that he had chosen Minnesota over Alabama as the place where he would play out his final season of NCAA eligibility.
"My decision is final. I'm a Minnesota Gopher baby!!!!! BIG10 here I come! Blessed GodIsGood Ready," Smith Tweeted early Wednesday morning. He will be immediately eligible to play and will not have to sit out a year as is the norm for transfers per college basketball analyst Jeff Goodman.

Chargers Select Florida International DE Tourek Williams (Rd.6, No.179)

With the 179th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Chargers select Florida International DE Tourek Williams. This Miami native didn’t play football until high school, and started lining up at defensive end during his senior season (after transferring from Carol City to Norland for the last two years of secondary education). Staying in his hometown to play for the up-and-coming FIU program proved to be a very good move, as Sun Belt coaches named him an all-conference selection the past three years. He has good speed around the edge, and great short area burst, but he has short arms, and doesn't use his hands all that well. As of right now, he best projects as a situational pass rushing 4-3 defensive end.

Jaguars Select Florida International SS Jonathan Cyprien (Rd.2, No.33)

With the 33rd overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Jaguars select Florida International SS Jonathan Cyprien. Cyprien was an exciting player to evaluate, as he has the size, athleticism and physicality to be a force on the back end at the next level. He is an aggressive player in the box that shows the ability to consistently wrap up and finish tackles as well as use his physicality to cover bigger TEs effectively. From off coverage he displays outstanding instincts, as he consistently diagnoses routes quickly and cuts off routes before his receiver can get out of his break. When the ball is in the air he attacks it like a receiver, and shows solid hands on balls outside of his frame. He needs to improve his feel for zone coverage from a deep alignment and do a better job of recovering against play-action passes, but he is a well-rounded player ready to make a big impact in the NFL.

Florida International’s new beach court is brilliant marketing

Marketing is critical to sales. Maybe it’s just as important for college hoopswins?
If so, it could be a good explanation for Florida International University’s recent rise from anonymity. The Golden Panthers made it to the Sun Belt conference finals this year before falling to Western Kentucky. You probably didn’t know that. But, you’ve likely heard about FIU hoops in recent years.
First, they signed former NBA legend Isiah Thomas to be their head coach, a beacon for nothing else if not discussion. Next, it was Richard Pitino son of another coaching legend. The folks in University Park know what it means to make a publicity splash. And it sure seems like they’re embracing it. The latest? A beach-themed basketball court.
Yup. FIU is once again a hot topic in the news — or at least the sports blogosphere — on account of their, ummm, unique new court design. Complete with whimsical swaying palm trees, crashing surf and golden sand. Whether you think it’s the stupidest thing ever or an...

FIU 61, Middle Tennessee 57

Deric Hill had 16 points and Malik Smith scored 14, including two late free throws, as Florida International upset top-seeded Middle Tennessee 61-57 in the Sun Belt Conference tournament semifinals Sunday night.

FIU led 33-24 at halftime and maintained the lead, though it was down to two points twice in the final seconds. Hill's layup with 12 seconds left and Smith's free throws with 7 seconds to go clinched it for the fourth-seeded Golden Panthers (18-13), who will play Arkansas State or Western Kentucky in Monday's championship game.

Middle Tennessee (28-5) saw the nation's longest winning streak end at 17 games. The Blue Raiders, Sun Belt regular-season champions with a 19-1 record, will wait for a possible NCAA tournament at-large bid. They last qualified in 1989.

Cameron Bell scored 15 for FIU. Shawn Jones scored 17 to lead the Blue Raiders and Marcos Knight had 13 points and 11 rebounds.

FIU players take recruit to strip club

New Florida International coach Ron Turner already has a mini scandal on his hands.
Over the weekend, a couple of FIU football players -- redshirt sophomore safety Demarkus Perkins and junior defensive tackle Isame Faciane -- tweeted about taking a prospective recruit to a strip club.
On Monday, the Twitter accounts of both players were shut down, though they remain on the team.
While the NCAA Division I manual doesn't expressly prohibit visits to strip clubs, FIU's visitor packet for student hosts states: You may not entertain the prospective student-athlete by attending a gentlemans club or providing an opportunity for a sexual encounter e.g., strip club, escort service, etc..
Turner, who replaced fired Mario Cristobal as Panthers coach in early January, told The Miami Herald, Moving forward, Ill be able to do a better job of picking hosts. Obviously, a couple didnt do the right job. Thats not something thats acceptable.

FIU players talk over Twitter about fun strip club visit with recruit

There are some things you see that truly make you wonder how an athlete got accepted into college. Take for instance what happened with a couple of Florida International football players.
FIU defensive back Demarkus Perkins tweeted about taking one of the program’s recruits to a strip club. He even tweeted with teammate Isame Faciane about it:

I don’t even know where to begin when it comes to analyzing how dumb this was.
First off, you’re not supposed to take recruits to a strip club if you’re trying to abide by NCAA rules. I get that not everyone is following the rules, so stuff like this is to be expected. But man, how dumb do you have to be to actually tweet about it? Apparently these youngsters don’t understand that Twitter is a public medium and that tweeting about something is like telling reporters about it. Don’t these guys have instant messenger or text messaging capabilities when they want to reminisce about stuffing $20 bills in Heather, Hope and Tiffany’s g-strings.

A couple of Florida International football players are in some trouble for taking a recruit to a strip club

A normal recruiting weekend at FIU this past weekend has led to some possible “issues” for two current FIU football players as well as the FIU program.
Current players Demarkus Perkins (@DPerk_15) and defensive tackle Isame Faciane (@ICEem_down) hosted a FIU recruit during the recruit’s visit to the campus. Perfectly normal.
The duo decided that they would show the recruit a good time by taking him to one of the area’s many strip clubs. If we’re honest, this is also perfectly normal.
But where things take a turn for the worse is when the two decide to have a conversation on Twitter about said trip to a strip club.
Of course, both accounts are gone now, but not before The Miami Herald got a screen grab of the exchange:

And in case you’re not sure what the big deal is, NCAA rules prohibit money being spent on recruits at a strip club. So there’s that.

FIU players take recruit to strip club

Florida International is doing their best to try and recruit players to their campus, but that’s a tough thing to do with Miami right down the road, and FSU and UF always looking to poach away in-state players, as well. Basically, you have to pullout all the stops as the small school, but it is best to make sure they stay under the radar. Unfortunately, FIU’s current players, specifically defensive back Demarkus Perkins and defensive tackle Isame Faciane, don’t seem to grasp this, as evidence by the fact of them tweeting about their recent trip to a local strip club with a recent prospect: We cannot pretend like this doesn’t happen on the routine at most schools, but tweeting about it is not the brightest thing to do. Even if you have a ‘protected account’, doesn’t mean someone isn’t about to rat you out to the millions on Twitter. Head coach Ron Turner, who just got the job on January 3, probably is having a nice little sit down with the players and giving them a swift kick in the ...

Episode 125 – Florida International the Sun Belt favorite

Florida International student beat reporter Luis Gutierrez
We all know that Mario Cristobal has developed quite the coaching profile in recent years. His dedication to establishing and building the Golden Panthers is commendable for so many reasons, especially when other positions have seemed to have his name practically on the office door at Rutgers and Pittsburgh. You can say that Cristobal is in the same boat as Boise State’s Chris Petersen in that they are committed to their programs in an era when most are looking for the next big job.
Mario Cristobal has stuck by FIU as they continue to grow. How much longer will he stay though?
Maybe in time Cristobal will move on to a new challenge. Maybe he will not. Whatever he ends up doing though, he will be respected for the work he has done at Florida International.
The Golden Panthers enter this season having gained the respect of their conference foes. The Sun Belt Conference coaches poll put FIU on top this preseason, narrowly...

Dierickx to transfer from FIU to Washington

Center Gilles Dierickx (Je-EEL Deer-ECK) will transfer from Florida International to Washington and be eligible for the 2013-14 season.

Washington announced the 6-foot-11 Dierickx's transfer on Monday. He will have three years of eligibility remaining after sitting out next season due to NCAA transfer rules.

Dierickx played sparingly for Florida International last season, appearing in 29 games and starting 15. He averaged 2.6 points and 2.2 rebounds. Dierickx was born in Belgium, but moved to the United States while he was in high school. He attended West Hills Chaminade in West Hills, Calif., for his final two years of high school.

NBA Draft Blog Interview with Dominique Ferguson

The story broke a few weeks ago, and it was tough to find any basketball fan or media member who wasn’t appalled by the story they were hearing. Former top recruit and Florida International sophomore Dominique Ferguson had requested a release to transfer after two seasons due to the firing of his coach, Isiah Thomas, and a desire to play closer to his family in Indianapolis. Florida International refused to grant him his release, even with some restrictions. In a shocking display of hubris, an appeals panel wrote that they believed that Ferguson would be much better off staying at the school. Left with little option, other than paying to play for another school himself, Ferguson decided to declare for the NBA Draft. While Ferguson hadn’t quite developed yet into the player people expected, this past season he showed numerous flashes of the athleticism and ability which made him a coveted high school recruit. Not letting the situation deter him, Ferguson is working hard to prep...

FIU's Ferguson says he's entering draft

Florida International's Dominique Ferguson says he has decided to enter the NBA draft after several attempts at being allowed to transfer were blocked by the school.

Ferguson says he submitted the paperwork on Tuesday. Early entry candidates have until Sunday to make themselves eligible for the June 28 draft.

Ferguson wanted to transfer after FIU fired basketball coach Isiah Thomas earlier this month, only to have his requests for a release from his scholarship denied. In two seasons at FIU, the 6-foot-9, 210-pound forward averaged 8.0 points and 5.6 rebounds for the Panthers.

Several FIU players say they are considering transfers because of Thomas' firing. FIU hired former Louisville associate head coach Richard Pitino to replace Thomas last week.

The school had no immediate response to a request for comment.

FIU players walk out on banquet

Isiah Thomas was shocked when he was canned as Florida International’s coach a month after the season ended. So were his players, and they decided to do some shocking back. At an end-of-the year banquet held to honor the Golden Panthers on Monday night, the entire basketball team got up and walked out as a highlight reel of the season was introduced. Tanner Wozniak, a freshman guard on the team, told Yahoo Sports that a couple of seniors suggested the players leave as a way to show the university the team is upset about Thomas being fired Friday. "We didn't...

Are T.Y. Hilton's FIU Golden Panthers The Best CFB Team In Miami?

There has been a transfer in power in the town most known as the melting pot. As the University of Miami ("The U") will be watching these bowl games from their couches at home, FIU is playing in their second consecutive bowl. At 8-4 the Golden Panthers will be taking on the 6-6 Marshall Thundering Herd in the Beef O' Brady's bowl, December 20, in St. Petersburg, FL.

Since head coach Mario Cristobal has taken over in 2007 it has been an uphill climb. His team had just 8 total wins in his first 3 seasons. Last year they had their first winning season, first bowl appearance, and bowl win since making the climb to Division I in the NCAA. Cristobal has changed the attitude and outlook of the FIU Golden Panthers and it had to start in the city they were from. I was on the 2007-2008 team that had just 1 win which snapped a 23 game losing streak. When you asked fellow students if they were going to or went to the games it was almost a joke or they would ask how bad was it...

FIU Golden Panthers @ Arkansas St. Red Wolves: Prediction

We have Tuesday night football this week. And though it's not exactly a clash of the titans when Florida International takes on Arkansas St, it's still great to have some action on this usually football-less night of the week.
And it is a game between two of the best teams in the Sun Belt Conference, with at least one player -- FIU's T.Y. Hilton -- who could eventually be playing on Sunday's, instead of Tuesday.
Both teams come in with a record of 4-2, but they have gotten to that point in very different ways.
FIU opened their season 3-0, including upset wins at Louisville, and against a tough Central Florida squad. They then inexplicably lost as a 16.5 favorite against LA Lafayette, and followed that up with an L against lowly Duke. In their last game they handled Akron, but not convincingly, winning 27-17 while not covering the spread.
Meanwhile, Arkansas St was 1-2 out of the gate, but the 2 losses were both expected. They fell to Illinois & Virginia T...
