2013 NFL Draft: New Orleans Bowl - ECU vs. Louisiana-Lafayette

In what certainly isn't a match-up of NFL powerhouses, this year's New Orleans Bowl features the still very young East Carolina and a UDFA-talent filled Louisiana Lafayette.

With Melvin White of ULL being the star of the game, he'll be the one to focus on scouting-wise. But there are three other prospects to keep you eyes on.

	Melvin White, CB, Louisiana Lafayette - #22, 6'3, 191
If White gets drafted, his size is going to be a big reason. White’s 6-3 frame and long arms are his biggest asset. White has the potential to be a physical corner at the next level but he lacks polish. White has special teams ability and that will be where he’ll make an impact at the beginning of his career. He can succeed as a gunner on the punt team immediately. White’s biggest issue at this point is his tackling form. He has a tendency to duck his head and whiff on tackles. He’s very inconsistent when tackling in the open field but showed aggressiveness to get into the

No. 15 Michigan St beats Louisiana-Lafayette 63-60

Louisiana-Lafayette's rally fell short with too many missed free throws in its bid for a major upset on the road against No. 15 Michigan State.

The Ragin' Cajuns lost 63-60 on Sunday. Shawn Long missed on a drive and Elfrid Payton missed a contested 3-pointer in the closing seconds that would have tied it.

''We wanted to go for 3,'' coach Bob Marlin said. ''It happened quickly. We were out of timeouts. I wish I'd had one in my back pocket.''

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo is getting tired of his team's generous nature and giving spirit over the holidays. The Spartans (5-1) committed 20 turnovers, 14 in the second half, and Louisiana-Lafayette nearly overcame a 10-point deficit.

''I think our guys are going to be great citizens when they get done with basketball, because the Christmas season is lasting all year,'' Izzo said. ''They're giving gifts away.

''Give them a lot of credit - I thought they played harder than we play

Shawn Long scored a season-high 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as Louisiana-Lafayette overpowered Southern University at New Orleans in the second half to win 76-66 Wednesday night.

The lead changed hands five more times before Bryant Mbamalu's 3-pointer gave Louisiana-Lafayette a 49-42 lead with 12:39 to go. After Southern-New Orleans briefly cut the deficit to three with 10:19 left, the Ragin' Cajuns pulled away.

Elridge Moore and Steven Wronkoski added 12 points and Elfrid Payton 11 points and seven assists for Louisiana-Lafayette, which shot 46.8 percent from the field (29 of 62), but hit only 3 of 17 from long range.

Louisiana-Lafayette 40, Lamar 0

Blaine Gautier threw two touchdowns and Louisiana-Lafayette's defense forced three turnovers as the Ragin' Cajuns shut out Lamar 40-0 on Saturday night in both teams' season opener.

Gautier was 7-of-18 passing and threw two touchdowns from two yards out.

Louisiana-Lafayette's Effrem Reed and Alonzo Harris each recorded 55 yards and a touchdown while kicker Brett Baer converted four first half field goals to help create the final margin.

Baer, who led the NCAA last year in field goal accuracy (18 of 20), connected from 52, 40, 39, and 32 yards out and has converted 15 straight attempts dating back to last season.

Lamar's offense struggled to move the ball, netting just 38 yards rushing on 37 attempts.

Ryan Mossakowski was efficient for the Cardinals, completing 12 of 19 attempts, but only managed 81 yards before being replaced by Caleb Berry in the fourth quarter.

Detroit Lions select Louisiana-Lafayette CB Dwight "Bill" Bentley in 3rd ...

With the 22nd pick in the 3rd round of the 2012 NFL draft, 85th overall, the Detroit Lions selected Dwight "Bill" Bentley , a 5'10", 185 pound cornerback from Louisiana-Lafayette. A 3 year starter for the Ragin Cajuns, Bentley was Sun Belt all-conference as a senior with 71 tackles, 3 interceptions and 6 passes defended.
My first thought when the Lions picked Bentley? "He's not a wide receiver! Thank f'n God."
Second? "About damn time Martin Mayhew started to address the defense."
Third thought? "5'10, 185? Now I now why his nickname is 'Little Bill'."
Fourth? "Keep repeating to yourself, 'Best player available, best player available...'"
And finally, fifth? "Bentley has no police record? WHOO!"
Bentley impressed in off season workouts, standing out at the Senior Bowl. But it's hard to shake off his small size and playing in mid-major conference. Some had him rated a top 10 corner going into the draft,

Team hits game winning shot with 6 players on the Court

The game was tied at 70 in overtime between Louisiana-Lafayette and Western Kentucky with 21 seconds left then one of the teams cheated without being caught. Louisiana Lafayette was taking the ball out of bounds and they 6 guys on the court, but no one notice not the officials not the Western Kentucky staff.
So with 6 guys on the court Louisiana Lafayette’s Elfrid Payton’s hit a game winning layup to get the win 72-70.
This was a huge error by the officials how could not 1 of the 3 catch it. There are supposed to count the number of players on the floor before they put the ball in play. If the officials would have caught it, then it would have resulted in a technical foul for Lafayette.
Mike Wood, the Sun Belt’s coordinator of officials talked to Espn. Com Andy Katz and had this to say.
“There’s no question there are six on the court,” Wood said. “You can’t get around that. We will review it and determine what we’re going to do next.”

Video: La-Lafayette wins with 6 players on court

Elfrid Payton/ragincajuns.comBy Paul Seaver (TheArenaPulse) On Thursday night, Middle Tennessee State improved to 14-2 overall and 3-0 within the Sun Belt Conference. The hot start has made headlines for the conference, as the Blue Raiders have been one of the more impressive teams at the mid-major level. The league made additional headlines on Thursday, and just two nights after the controversial ending between Wisconsin and Michigan State, another wacky ending played out. This one although, should have been a little easier to call. With 21.0 seconds remaining in overtime and the game tied at 70, LA-Lafayette and Western Kentucky walked onto the court, fresh off a timeout.Western Kentucky headed down to the defensive end of the floor with their expected five players on the court. LA-Lafayette set up their inbounds play on the side...with six red jerseys in the game.Apparently nobody noticed that LA-Lafayette had six men on the court, not during the inbounds and not during the ensuing 17-18 second possesion. The Ragin' Cajuns' Elfrid Payton scored the game-winning lay-up with roughly three second to play in the overtime frame, giving LA-Lafayette the 72-70 victory. Not only was a call not made, the possession itself was crazy.Despite nearly losing his dribble near the sideline, Payton kept the basketball the entire possession, eventually getting all the way to the basket for the game-winning score. The possession was 6-on-5 in terms of numbers, but 1-on-5 in terms of the actual play.Thursday's meeting between LA-Lafayette (8-8, 2-0) and Western Kentucky (5-11, 1-2) was the only match-up between the two this season. Here's the video:

Louisiana-Lafayette uses six players on game-winning possession

Scoring on a power play is no longer merely a hockey phenomenon. Louisiana-Lafayette's basketball team parlayed a man advantage into a key Sun Belt League victory Thursday night.
With Louisiana-Lafayette and Western Kentucky tied at 70 and 21 seconds remaining in the first overtime, the Ragin' Cajuns inbounded the ball with six men on the floor instead of five. Neither the referees nor the Hilltoppers spotted the blunder, enabling Louisiana-Lafayette's Elfrid Payton to give his team a 72-70 victory on a game-winning driving layup with three seconds left.

It wasn't until after the final horn sounded that someone alerted Western Kentucky and the referees that Louisiana-Lafayette had an extra man on the floor. Referees would have assessed the Ragin' Cajuns a technical foul had they noticed the extra red jersey during the play, but Sun Belt coordinator of officials Mike Wood told ESPN.com, "You can't go to the monitor and do it retroactively."

Elfrid Payton's layup with three seconds remaining in overtime lifted Louisiana-Lafayette to a 72-70 Sun Belt Conference victory over Western Kentucky on Thursday night.

J.J. Thomas scored 19 points and Raymone Andrews 16 for the Ragin' Cajuns (8-8, 2-0), who won their 12th straight regular-season conference game.

The Hilltoppers (5-11, 1-2), who beat Louisiana-Lafayette in the second round of the conference tournament last season, held the Ragin' Cajuns to one field goal in the final 4:40 of regulation and scored nine unanswered points to come back from a 59-53 deficit to lead 62-59.

Louisiana-Lafayette forced overtime with a Kadeem Coleby stuff and a free throw with 6 seconds left by Payton.

The Ragin' Cajuns led 68-67 with 1:31 to go in overtime after a steal and layup by Payton, but Derrick Gordon, who scored 20 points for the Hilltoppers, hit a tying 3-pointer with 25 seconds left.

Ragin Cajuns win on Buzzer Beater

No, this isn't a basketball story. It's the story of the University of Lousiana-Lafayette Ragin Cajuns who won their 1st bowl game since 1944 when Brett Baer barely pushed a 50-yard field goal through the uprights as the clock struck zero in the New Orleans Bowl Saturday night. That sealed the Cajuns 32-30 win over San Diego State. The win moved the Cajuns to 9-4 on the season, arguably their most successful season ever. 1st year coach Mark Hudspeth helped engineer the turnaround from a 3-9 record in 2010. Quarterback Blaine Gautier was the game MVP, throwing for 470 yards and 3 TD's.The kick came after Baer had lined up for a 55-yard field goal. However, San Diego State tried to draw the Cajuns into a procedure penalty. It didn't work. It just moved the kick closer and that probably was the saver, because if you see the highlights. The kick barely made it.Here's a replay of your game winner: (until its pulled)KATC-TV takes us to a Lafayette area sports bar where th...

Louisiana-Lafayette 83, N. Arizona 66

Junior-college transfer Kadeem Coleby made an instant impact in his debut for Louisiana-Lafayette, scoring 16 points and blocking eight shots in an 83-66 win against Northern Arizona on Friday night at the Hilltop Challenge.

Coleby, a 6-9 center from Daytona College, took advantage of an undersized Lumberjacks (0-1) roster to score 12 points in the second half, when the Ragin' Cajuns (1-0) led by as many as 21.

Darshawn McClellan added 13 points and Bryant Mbamalu had 12 points with three assists in what was both teams' season opener.

James Douglas led Northern Arizona with 21 points. The Lumberjacks were undone by their own shooting - 35.1 percent - and an inability to stop the Ragin' Cajuns, who hit 62.3 percent from the floor.

J.J. Thomas, a preseason first-team All-Sun Belt Conference selection, had nine points, eight rebounds and six assists for Louisiana.
