Draft Zone Spotlight: Kyle Wilborn, OL, Troy University
Kyle Wilborn of Troy is one of the best athletes for being as big as he is. I love this kid, and was able to scout him this year on numerous occasions. I was working for the Raycom All Star Game earlier this year and was in charge of putting together an offensive and defensive line. Kyle was one of those guys I just had to get for the game. He is a strong kid, with great size and footwork. Wilbron impressed NFL scouts and personnel at the Raycom game and will have a bright future in the NFL. Remember the name, this kid is special.
How many teams were recruiting you coming out of high school and how did you make your decision?
Coming out of High school, I wasn’t a highly touted recruit. I went to a small private school that was K-12 with about 400 students. My school didn’t establish a football program till my junior year and after my first season; I fell in love with the game. All together we had about 16 guys on the team; I...

Troy 81, FAU 79

Emil Jones scored nine of Troy's 11 points in overtime, leading the Trojans to an 81-79 victory over Florida Atlantic in the opening round of the Sun Belt tournament Friday night.

Jones' two free throws with 17 seconds left in regulation sent the game into overtime, and he scored Troy's first eight points in the extra period. Greg Gantt scored inside to bring the Owls within 80-79 with 1:11 left, but they missed their next two shots and Jones closed it out by making 1 of 2 free throws with 6 seconds left.

Jones finished with 18 points for 10th-seeded Troy (12-20), which will meet No. 2 seed Arkansas State in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Ray Chambers added 15 points and Tevin Calhoun had 12.

Stefan Moody led seventh-seeded Florida Atlantic with 29 points. Pablo Bertone added 20 and Gantt had 19.

The win was the 500th in Troy coach Don Maestri's career.

Ray Chambers led Troy with 17 points and eight rebounds, Tevin Calhoun scored 11 and Antoine Myers 10 for the Trojans (11-19, 6-13), who lost their fourth straight.

Emil Jones scored 18 points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out five assists - both team-highs - in Troy's 66-62 win over Alabama State on Sunday in a matchup between nonconference foes.

Alabama State (0-5) led the majority of the first half and by 29-23 with 2:01 until intermission. Troy used a 7-2 run to close the gap to 31-30 at halftime and took a 38-35 lead behind 3-pointers from Jones and Wright on back-to-back possessions.

Troy (4-2) controlled the second half, as the Trojans stretched their lead to as much as nine and led by eight points three different times in the half.

Alabama State outshot Troy 45 percent (24 of 53) to 43 percent (27 of 63), but the Trojans made 6 of 14 3-point attempts.

Joshua Freelove led Alabama State with 24 points, but the Hornets converted only 10 of 17 free throws.

Emil Jones drained a 16-foot jumper with 1.6 seconds left and Troy opened its new arena with a 56-53 victory over Mississippi State on Friday night in both teams' season opener.

Jones' shot made it 55-53 and, after the Bulldogs suffered a turnover on the inbounds play, R.J. Scott hit a free throw with seventh-tenths of a second remaining.

Tevin Calhoun scored 12 points to lead the Trojans, while Jones and Hunter Williams added 10 each.

Jalen Steele's 16 points paced Mississippi State, which was making its debut under coach Rick Ray. Trivante Bloodman had 11 points and Gavin Ware 10.

Navy, Troy facing very different defensive tasks

The assignments are clear for the defenses of Navy and Troy.

The Midshipmen (6-3) have to contain Trojans quarterback Corey Robinson and a dangerous passing offense in Saturday's game. Troy (4-5) must switch over from last week's passing festival with Tennessee to defending one of the nation's top running teams.

The Trojans are trying to bounce back from a 55-48 loss to Tennessee when Robinson, backup Deon Anthony and Tyler Bray combined for more than 1,000 passing yards.

''Now we are going from a team that spreads it out all over the field to a team that is very different, that is a dynamic option, play-action pass team that is very, very disciplined and normally very prolific,'' Troy coach Larry Blakeney said. ''So we will have our hands full. We are getting into some must-win area and I hope we respond well to it.''

Navy has already secured a spot in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl Dec. 29 in San Francisco against a Pac-12 opponent. The Midshipmen have won five i

Troy 38, FIU 37

Will Scott's 42-yard field goal with 11 seconds left gave Troy a 38-37 comeback win over Florida International on Saturday.

The Trojans (4-3, 3-2 Sun Belt) drove 69 yards for the game-winning kick after starting at their 6-yard line. Troy had trailed 37-21 in the third quarter after Justin Haley's 62-yard fumble return for a touchdown.

Deon Anthony, starting in place of injured quarterback Corey Robinson, threw three touchdown passes - the last an 11-yarder to Eric Thomas in the third quarter. Anthony scored his second rushing touchdown, a 13-yarder, in the fourth quarter.

Anthony, whose 115 rushing yards are the most by a Troy quarterback since 1989, completed 29 of 41 for 245 yards in Robinson's stead. Troy's all-time leading passer, who suffered a concussion last week, had started 31 straight games.

Jake Medlock completed 17 of 27 passes for 298 yards and three touchdowns for FIU (1-7, 0-4).

Troy 31, South Alabama 10

A strong defensive performance and a balanced offensive attack helped Troy beat South Alabama 31-10 Saturday.

Troy (3-2, 2-1) started off slow against Sun Belt rival South Alabama, as Corey Robinson threw an interception on the Trojans' first possession. But the Jaguars couldn't take advantage of the turnover, punting after three plays.

After an early 21-yard field goal by Troy's Will Scott and a 1-yard run by Justin Albert pushed the Trojan's lead to 10-0, South Alabama's Trey Fetner's 3-yard touchdown cut the lead to 10-7 after the first quarter. Albert finished with 30 yards on eight carries.

South Alabama (1-3, 0-1) never got any closer, scoring just 3 points the rest of the second quarter, and going scoreless in the second half.

Troy's defense held strong for the victory, giving up less than 50 yards and allowing only two first downs in the entire second half.

Troy 14, North Texas 7

Corey Robinson threw for 274 yards and two touchdowns, and Troy spoiled North Texas' Sun Belt Conference opener Saturday night with a 14-7 victory.

Robinson, who was 29 of 42 and threw one interception, hit Jaquon Robinson for a 15-yard score just before halftime, then found Chip Reeves on a 76-yarder in the third. Reeves led the Trojans (2-2, 1-1) with seven catches for 120 yards.

The Troy defense took over from there, holding the Mean Green (1-3, 0-1) scoreless after the first quarter despite allowing 422 yards of total offense. North Texas missed three field goals and converted just two of its 14 third downs.

North Texas' Derek Thompson threw for 236 yards but completed just 12 of his 28 passes, all but two of them to Ivan Delgado (126 yards) and Brelan Chancellor (107 yards). Chancellor caught a 50-yard touchdown pass for the Mean Green's only score.

Troy 39, UAB 29

Shawn Southward ran for a career-high 204 yards and three touchdowns as Troy defeated Alabama-Birmingham 39-29 on Saturday in the season opener for both teams.

Troy's win spoiled Garrick McGee's head coaching debut for UAB.

UAB's Jonathan Perry threw for 307 yards and two touchdowns but had two costly turnovers in the fourth quarter. Both led to Troy touchdowns.

With Troy up 25-23, De'Von Terry intercepted a Perry pass and the Trojans capped it off with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Corey Robinson to B.J. Chitty. On UAB's first play of the next drive, Perry was hit by Troy's Tyler Roberts and fumbled. Tony Davis recovered inside the 10-yard line.

After an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against UAB, Southward scored from 5 yards out.

Robinson hit 12 of 21 passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns. Chip Reeves had six catches for a career-high 125 yards and a 55-yard touchdown reception.

Troy Trojans aiming to cure defensive problems

The Troy Trojans have done some needed reloading on defense.

Coach Larry Blakeney said at Saturday's media day that the Trojans are better and deeper but aren't close to where they need to be.

The Trojans finished 113th nationally in total defense last season and allowed 38-plus points seven times. That's a big reason they went 3-9 after winning five straight Sun Belt Conference championships. It was Troy's first losing season since 2005.

Blakeney signed a recruiting class heavy on defense. That group includes Southern California transfer cornerback T.J. Bryant and junior college cornerback Zach Miller.

Offensively, quarterback Corey Robinson is closing in on several Troy career passing marks.

The Trojans face Navy and Mississippi State at home this season and play at Tennessee.

Falcons Select Troy LB Jonathan Massaquoi (Rd.5, No.164)

With the 164th overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Falcons select Jonathan Massaquoi, OLB (Troy). Massaquoi has very long arms, which are a major source of intrigue to NFL talent evaluators. Massaquoi would benefit from staying at end where he can use his arms in tight quarters to keep an advantage on offensive tackles. If he is moved to linebacker, Massaquoi has shown the ability to cover in short areas and fly out to cover the flats and running backs out of the backfield. Massaquoui is a stiff, elongated defender who struggles to move fluidly in space. Off the snap, he doesn’t have the innate burst or speed to get outside of offensive tackles using a speed rush. Source: NFL.com Attached Thumbnails

Jonathan Massaquoi scouting report

Jonathan Massaquoi OLB Troy #94

Ht: 6’2″
Wt: 250

Strengths:

Impressive motor; fights through the whistle and is very active throughout the play. Decent speed and athleticism for a linebacker; definitely looks the part of a 3-4 outside linebacker. Has the speed to make plays in pursuit. Does a nice job shedding blocks; has active hands to fight with more physical offensive tackles. Has a nice array of pass rush moves; rip move seems to be his go-to and is consistently effective.

Weaknesses:

Already 24 years old. Primarily lined up at defensive end in college, but likely will need to shift to linebacker in the NFL. Level of competition is a minor concern; played at JUCO before joining Troy. Explosion off the snap is inconsistent. Plays out of control at times; needs to do a better job of staying low to avoid being knocked off course with quick jabs from offensive linemen. Struggles at the point of attack; lacks the lower body strength to hold his ground again...

Troy 83, W. Kentucky 77

Alan Jones scored 18 points to pace five in double figures for Troy in an 83-77 win over Western Kentucky on Saturday, snapping a four-game losing streak for the Trojans.

Emil Jones added 16 points, Will Weathers and Justin Wright had 12 points apiece and Tim Owens had 10 for Troy (8-15, 2-9 Sun Belt Conference). The Trojans have swept the regular-season series, also beating the Hilltoppers on Jan. 7.

The Trojans led the rest of the way, outscoring the Hilltoppers 53-38 in the second to seal it.

T.J. Price had 17 points to lead Western Kentucky (8-17, 4-7).
