Big Ten Q&A: Nebraska Cornhuskers

Nebraska has taken the two Big Ten meetings against Penn State since the Huskers joined the conference and last year they reached the Big Ten championship game. This season the Huskers continue to look for answers on defense in an attempt to silence some of the criticism of the program's apparent shortcomings on a path back to true national prominence.

What does the 2013 seasons have in store in Lincoln? Are these Huskers equipped for a return trip to Indianapolis for another crack at a Big Ten title? If they get that far, can they finally win a conference championship for the first time since 1999? What can we expect to see from Taylor Martinez, who is back for one more year under center for Nebraska?

To answer some of these questions following the spring we are joined by Brandon Cavanaugh from the Nebraska blog Corn Nation for our latest post-spring Q&A.

Q: It’s that time of the year again when we ask the question of whether or not Nebraska is going to be a leg...

The Portland Timbers Are Getting In On The ‘Be Nice To Kids With Cancer’ Meme

The “Sports Teams Being Nice To Kids” meme is moving forward nicely. First, a 7-year old with brain cancer got to run in a touchdown for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. He got his own card and even got to hang out with the President (and, I assume, grill him on his policies). East Carolina similarly honored a kid, and WWE Champion John Cena devoted a chunk of Raw to introducing three Make-A-Wish kids as new WWE Superstars. Now it’s soccer’s turn. Yeah, I’m glad nobody threw firecrackers and beer bottles at this kid, too. Here’s Atticus Lane-Dupre, an awesomely-named kid with cancer who got the chance to play in front of more than 3,000 Portland Timbers, score four goals and win the game for his ‘Green Machine.’ He got to exchange jerseys with team captain Will Johnson after the game and everything. At the end of the day, it’s just a video of a normal kid having a hell of a lot of fun playing soccer, and sometimes that’s worth celebrating, even without the inspirational story. When Atticu...

President Obama Met With Nebraska Cornhuskers Star Jack Hoffman

In what continues to be my go-to feel-better story of the year, 7-year old Jack Hoffman is still riding the high of becoming the Nebraska Cornhuskers’ biggest star football player in the program’s long, storied history. (Obviously, I’ve crossed out the Bill Callahan era with a thick, black Magic Marker.) Jack, of course, is the young brain cancer patient who ran for a 69-yard touchdown during the team’s recent spring game, and that was followed up by Upper Deck creating his very own trading card.Yesterday, Jack and his family got to visit the White House and meet with President Barack Obama for about 15 minutes to talk about the boy’s incredible spring. The boy’s father, Andy Hoffman, said Obama spent about 15 minutes with his family. The president talked about how he had seen Jack’s now-famous run and discussed new research efforts into cures for cancer.“We had an opportunity to thank him for putting more national attention on pediatric brain cancer,” Andy Hoffman said. “This is a d...

Cornhuskers boy meets Obama

Seven-year-old Jack Hoffman became an Internet sensation and inspiration to millions after he took the field at a Nebraska Cornhuskers spring game and ran for a touchdown. Hoffman, who is battling brain cancer, became the stuff of legends when he scooted 69 yards with the ball followed by the jubilant players. One other person who followed him from a distance that day was the President of the United States. On Monday, young Jack, his family and his friend, former Nebraska running back Rex Burkhead, visited President Obama in the Oval Office and talked for fifteen minutes. He received a signed football from the POTUS who told the littlest Cornhusker he was proud of him. "I though it was awesome, " Hoffman said about his visit to the White House. Jack became a favorite fan of the team when the Nebraska native befriended Burkhead after he was diagnosed with cancer in 2011. Suited up in a miniature No. 22 Burkhead uniform, Hoffman had the stadium crowd on its feet when he ran into the end zone

Heard to transfer to Kentucky

Braylon Heard is a 5’11” 185 lb. running back from Youngstown, Ohio. Coming out of high school, he was very highly recruited and wound up signing with the Nebraska Cornhuskers. After becoming unhappy with his lack of playing time, Heard decided he wanted a transfer, and Mark Stoops wanted him in Lexington. Stoops and Heard both share the same high school and hometown. Today, Heard has decided to transfer to Kentucky and join Stoops Troops.
Heard rushed for 348 yards and 3 touchdowns last season, despite being third on the depth chart. He is leaving Nebraska as a sophomore, and will sit out the 2013 season due to transfer rules. He will have two years of eligibility left to play for the ‘Cats. Kentucky’s two leading rushers from last fall will both be seniors while Heard serves his 1-year hiatus. The starting spot will be potentially become Heard’s in 2014.
For Mark Stoops to land a talent like Braylon Heard is unheard of before his arrival. Heard will be a major impact player for the ‘Cats when he

Video: Seven-Year-Old Boy With Cancer, Jack Hoffman, Runs For A TD In The Nebraska Spring Game

Sports really are great sometimes. At Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Nebraska on Saturday, the Nebraska Cornhusker football team held their annual Spring Game in front of over 60,000 people. The best moment of the day was when coach Bo Pelini subbed seven-year-old Jack Hoffman into the game. Hoffman is on a two week break from chemotherapy, because he is battling with cancer.
Video after the jump

As you could see in the video, Hoffman took the handoff from quarterback Taylor Martinez and took off for a 69-yard touchdown run. Last season, Jack grew a friendship with former Husker running back Rex Burkhead. He is a life long Nebraska fan, and was obviously excited when asked about the moment. According to the Washington Times, asked what he was thinking when he ran onto the field, Jack said, “Scoring a touchdown.”
And when he broke free and scored? “It felt awesome.” And the crowd reaction? “Really awesome.”
What a great moment for that kid. Big ludos to Bo Pelini, football oper...

Cornhuskers Score With Best Story of the Spring

If you are a college football fan or someone who watches the four letter network then I'm sure you've heard or read about this story but I still felt it needed to be posted here at the blog.

During the Nebraska Cornhuskers spring game, a seven year old cancer patient ran for a 69 yard TD. Former Nebraska stand-out RB Rex Burkhead has become involved with Team Jack and with the help of the administration and FB C.J. Zimmerer came the idea of getting Jack Hoffman involved in the spring game.

On fourth and one, Jack Hoffman was inserted into the game in his Rex Burkhead jersey and he took a Taylor Martinez hand-off and with a little direction from Taylor, he was off to the races.

In college football it's too often that we hear about the bad things that happen. It's nice to hear about the good things once in a while. Kudos to Bo Pellini and the entire Nebraska family for bringing this to us.

A Great Reason to Watch the Nebraska Cornhuskers Next Season

Personally I think that Taylor Martinez is one of the quarterbacks to watch in college football, but that is not the reason to watch the Nebraska Cornhuskers that I'm referring to.

Like most teams, the Cornhuskers have been involved in spring practices lately. Recently they had their spring game, and during it they had a very special running back--a pediatric cancer patient named Jack Hoffman.

If you haven't hit play yet, Martinez hands the ball off to young Jack in this play and then helps guide him into the end zone. After he scores he gets lifted up and then both the offense and defense surround him to celebrate his run.

This kind of stuff just melts my heart. I love that the team not only took the time out to do it, but the way they all really sold it--guiding Jack along, 'acting' as if they were staying on blocks, and then the way everyone celebrated, etc.

I can only imagine how big the smile on young Jack's face was.

I like to watch good teams (which they are), b

Report: Pelini ripped ex-recruit

When it comes to college football recruiting, two axioms seem to hold true year-in and year-out: 1. “All is fair in love and recruiting.” 2. “Nothing is official until the ink goes dry on Signing Day.” Apparently though, no one shared that memo with Bo Pelini and the Nebraska caching staff. That’s because after Orlando-area wide receiver Dominic Walker elected to decommit from Nebraska this past weekend, well, Pelini and one of his assistant coaches had choice words for the 6’2 190 lb. Walker. Safe to say, they weren’t pretty. No, no, no. That’s because when Walker decided it’d only be appropriate to deliver the news of his decommitment personally by making a phone call to Nebraska’s staff, the short fuse and hot temper that Pelini has become notorious for over the years kicked into overdrive. Here’s how Walker described the call to the Orlando Sentinel’s Chris Hays: "It was a very tough decision. They were [mad]. They were very mad.
